Xbox One Delay Leaves the Door Ajar for PS4

This merely cements my belief in my original posts from earlier this year. I do not believe Microsoft had any intention of launching this year...anywhere. Not only did Sony's February announcement catch MS unawares as regards hardware specifications but more importantly I think they were totally unprepared by Sony's plans to launch worldwide this year.

Everything about the Xone seems cobbled together in an emergency meeting. Their original plans for the unit as regards DRM were ill-conceived and hardly thought through and their hardware is grossly underpowered. All of their back peddling speaks of the sorts of matters which would have been resolved in advance given a proper development time. Everything connected with the Redmond outing smells rushed as if it were decided overnight. Now the lack of proper testing over time has cost them chip yields and the inability to meet shipment is the result of unplanned console deployment rather than customer demand.

These cancelations will cause Sony to greatly increase their US marketing in order to hit MS at home. Great news for us but quite grim for the Done.

It would seem like MS were never going for 2013 launch after all. After PS4 feb reveal it was ultra quiet from MS.

All these reversals could of been done in the development stage and in private but they have had to rush their schedule. Why? Because PS3 is doing so well everywhere else apart from the US and the PS4 seems likely to steam ahead.

The strong line up of developers and great franchise games have helped Sony get back the lead that the 360 had from a years head start.

I'm guessing Microsoft is doing this to release the console earlier by only producing consoles to the countries with the highest demand while also really hurting popularity in the others. The less units they produce, the quicker it will be for them to ship them all out. Then they can keep supplying till other countries get to receive it. If they release it earlier, will this hurt the PS4? No, to Microsoft this is already a lost battle. If the Xbox One gets a week or 2 earlier release day, it's not going to make a difference compared to having a 1 year advantage. Sony has been prepared way before the Xbox One, the PS4 is not a rushed console. And who knows, maybe Sony will surprise us all and release it in October with all the demand they have received. This article confirms Microsoft are in panic mode and unprepared. High chance the Xbox One was still a prototype when they first showed it and still is now.

Microsoft realy sucks at marketing they should have kept their cards closed on which countries the xb1 would launch first.

You're really grasping at straws there. All manufacturers reports shipped numbers because when they ship they are sold as far as they are concerned.

But also retailers don't order more stock when what they have isn't selling. Retailers today don't carry extra stock, it costs them too much money. So that means the the shipped numbers are the sold numbers after a few weeks.

The PS3 shipped later than the Xbox 360 because they had to wait for the bluray and HDMI 1.3 specs to be completed. By waiting they were able to ship with more advanced tech. And still they caught up and passed 360 sales despite the 12-24 months sales lead the 360 had over the PS3. The Xbox One isn't going to gain any technological advantage by shipping late, it will just be late.

Companies don't do business through consignment. Companies manufacture a product. They than set an MSRP for said product. They than sell their products below that MSRP to vendors. Vendors pay said company for their shipment of units for said product. Vendor (Best Buy, GameStop, Amazon, Wal-Mart, etc) sells product for a profit at or around MSRP.

What ever Sony, MS, Nintendo, etc.. ship. They got bank for already. In house consumer numbers can never truly be known and is a moot talking point. We then start getting into how many 360 are actually still working because of hardware issues, etc... Who cares? Sony, MS and Nintendo got their bank the minute the vendor paid them for the shipment of their products. That is ALL the companies care about.

So shipped vs sold doesn't really matter.

Ms reacted by running a public hardware beta beginning in late 2005...the price they payed for rushing to beat Sony out the gate was over $1 billion JUST in warranty changes...let alone losses on every console sold at the time...

Thats not true at all most of the countries they are leaving out now share their first language with others that are getting it at launch day so if it was due to languages they wouldnt be releasing in most of the ones they are aiming for, so MS basically just lied again and you fell for it.

They had to drop some countries to make sure they have some stock for the big countries. If they lose in the US and UK then they are done.

As it is they will already have to deal with the negative press when Sony announces sales well beyond Xbox One sales. To joe blow gamer it won't matter why Sony sold more, they will just see that the PS4 sold more.

They never gave us a launch window. They didn't promise us a 2005 launch. They still could do the rest as well. I think they'll try like hell to put it out in 2013, and I do think they'll put out botched consoles like the 360 RRoD to do it....

But I'll believe Xbox One is out when it's actually out. They came to the party really late and are so obviously behind. It's like when you were in school and saw everyone's oral report and that one person just basically did nothing and just got up and talked...yeah it's obvious like that how behind they were.

What you can tell from such a release is that ANY MORE setbacks and they probably will need to push it back.

If they are already dropping off 20 percent or so of their launch consoles to supply demand for the rest, then if they need to drop more or anything pushes back production a few weeks, and all hell can break loose.

I can see a small amount in the tens of thousands trickling out just so they say they got it out. But at this point they should be in production and ramping it up. These things are literally needing to ship in about 2 months. We're in mid August now. Perhaps 2 1/2 months if late Novemeber like most are saying.

I'd say the next delay they'll need to contact preorders and inform them they can't get them the console day 1. Technically they could do 1 more and stiff everywhere but US until 2014.

Overall not good news and they still have two months or so of pushing it back further. They still need to actually produce the console and problems can come up. Them being so far behind means to me they are only really finding out HOW to produce them, and thus HOW MANY and WHEN to expect them. There definitely can be more delays.

On the flip side, Sony is no doubt already in production and we haven't heard anything bad. All we heard was that they nailed production a while back. That doesn't mean they aren't having problems, but they haven't had to scale anything back yet. If there was going to be a problem with PS4 production I'd think we'd already hear of it.

Whereas with Xbox One, that hurdle has definitely yet to be crossed.

No. What I believe is that Microsoft wouldn't want to ship an unfinished product to countries all around the world. Its not just the Xbox One OS that has to be translated. You are forgetting that the Kinect is bundled with the Xbox One and its voice commands are considered one of it's main selling points.

Voice input from different languages could definitely pose a problem, especially when certain areas have different dialects and small vocabulary changes from country to country. Dragon Naturally Speaking had some of these issues years ago.

From a business standpoint, it would make more sense to delay the product till the voice commands are on point, than to release a half-assed product and receive negative press on top of angry consumers.

Im not saying there aren't other factors that could have played into this decision. Just that voice commands arent as simple as everyone seems to think. Hell, Google and Apple took their sweet time with getting a decent amount of languages recognized by their products with voice commands. A lot of languages are still missing from their products.

I agree, right now X360 pre orders for games are dominating the charts in comparison to the PS3 counterpart. Yet the PS4 pre orders for games are way ahead of the XB1 counterpart.

What this shows is US software sales X360 has a commanding lead for current gen, but when compared to next gen it's the opposite with Sony PS4 leading over XB1. This is what I heard too, that PS3 and 360 are almost tied. But for the past 7 years the PS3 has been playing catch up to the 360, you would think they would have passed them up by now.

By your own link and admission, MS has sold 78.2 million units by July 2013...4 months later than Sony's own report. Since Sony obviously sold PS3's in that 4 month interim, the gap would be even wider than 78.2 vs 80.4 by June 30th(last day of MS FY 2013).

However, I don't believe any numbers have been released since then, so I may be wrong and they haven't sold a single system since then, but they are over the 80 million mark as of end of FY2012, thus using factual data from the company itself, I have proven your argument wrong since you claim 78.2m units for 360 shipped as of end of FY2013.

I know you'll come back with, "They're including PS2 numbers in there too. Keep in mind though they didn't start doing that until FY 2011, and by then I doubt the difference was that drastic. They discontinued the PS2 right after the end of FY2012, so 1 year may be off. Either way Sony was beating MS in the home console market. How's that for changing the argument? PS2 sold where 360 could not.

This is a very difficult situation for the Xbox division: customers worried, bad initials policies, product with less technology, high price, critics everywhere, bad publicity, turns and contradictions, lies and now probably problems with the manufacture. The company cant cancel the launch because there a lot of machines in fabrication, customers with preorders, games in development, compromises with other firms. Where we may see some differences is in preorders for games in Europe now. Esp on games like Ghosts and BF3 players will be left behind for awhile and competitive players wont like that.

Don't think it will change peoples minds on what consoles they will buy end off the day for consoles sales rise over the time a console is out.

I've had my preorder from way back for my PS4 in the UK/N.Ireland so I'm in the Area for Both consoles. But id feel rather let down to be in one off the territory's to be held back. Just my opinion tbh.

The Xbox One is being delayed because of the low ESRAM yields. PS4's APU has a very simple architecture that doesn't use ESRAM, and instead relies on more expensive GDDR5 RAM.

Xbox One's APU however includes a big ESRAM chip on the same die as the CPU and GPU, which makes the die very large. And because of that, the yields have been very low per wafer.

Microsoft will be lucky to have a million units at launch worldwide. It's not terrible, but that one critical design flaw is going to slow down its initial sales.

I can see it now, less meltdowns but gamers will start to complain if their systems are regularly shutting down. The X1 is in shambles, MS said the started working on it in 2010. Cerny said PS4 begin in 2008. The difference can be seen. Sonys reveal in Feb caught MS off guard. So much so they announced a April reveal of their own then delayed it a month and had the worst reveal in history that nearly destroyed the Xbox brand. Next thing you know Mattrick is suddenly gone, sure he got a quick job at Zynga to make it look good, but believe me he was fired, so he went to Zynga who is in shambles themselves.

MS reveal policeies were so bad they have had to reverse everything to the point that now the Kinect is not mandantory and I think these are all good things because the policies were a joke to begin with, but they damaged their reputation and brand...how can honest gamers ever trust them again...they have taken years recovering from RROD in the 360...then they try to ram DRM, always online, kinect needed down gamers throats...now delays in 8 of the 21 countries..MS was caught with their pants down...Now for me I am trying to decide if I cancel my Day One X1? Cause I don't want a Kinect and now its not required I think I should wait for a Kinectless unit to come out sometimee next year. In the mean time my launch edition PS4 reserved way back on June 10 right after Sony's awesome presser where they stick it up MS a**, should help me get by.

They are leaving out the smaller markets & getting out the most consoles for the regions the brand sells the most. Please someone explain if the console sells like shit in a region lets say Japan, why waste all those units sitting on shelves when they could be selling in say the UK or US. It makes perfect sense. They are obviously struggling to make a complete worldwide release, so this way the markets that support them the best gets their console & the ones that don't wait or buy another brand.

Throughout this whole ordeal, I have noticed that MS really is in a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" situation. It seems it doesn't matter if they do something that pisses people off, or do something to rectify the situation, it always ends with people being pissed off at them, and I don't even want to hear any "they deserve it!" BS. They didn't kill your dog or kick your pregnant wife in the stomach - they make hardware and software - consumer goods, that's it, but judging by the overall mindset of the community, at least on this site, this company and/or their business practices are apparently so vehemently evil, that they deserve nothing less than the Wrath of God...

I do have a question though. For those of you that can't stand MS, what exactly would they need to do to be up to your standards? What would need to happen in order for you to at least give them an "ex-con gutter-trash homeless person" level of respect, rather than "pedophile rapist serial killer?" Is their anything they could do, or are some of you just going to hate them till your dying breath?

Despite the apparent horrible beating MS is currently taking from Sony, I honestly do not think its going to turn out as bad as it seems. Initially, yes, they'll be pretty beat up, but over the course of the generation, after people actually have time to experience the X1 and see that isn't the doomsday device we all thought it was, I think things will make a turnaround. MS leaving markets open until 2014, isn't really a big deal, because they are markets that MS really didn't have precedence in any way. Even if they lose ground to Sony, which seems inevitable at this point, I don't see it turning out nearly as bad as the "bloodbath massacre" many of you claim, or are even hoping it will. Why? because history shows that the gaming community is a lot of talk, but not so much walk.

Whether it's the DRM fiasco with Blizzard and EA or the massive disapproval with Bioware over ME3, gamers largely move on and get over it, because gamers largely overreact - we are bunch of drama queens, aren't we? EA is gonna sell a boatload with BF4, Blizzard is still making oodles of money, and people are still gonna flock to pick up Bioware's next rpg, whether it be a DA or ME sequel or something completely new.

In closing, I would like you guys to realize that it isn't a contest. Whether you play on X1 or PS4, the important thing is that we're all playing games, not what platform we play them on. I mean what do you plan to accomplish by "winning" this contest? Total market domination? So if Sony or MS "wins," all future consoles will just be consoles manufactured by the winning party? Sounds a little bleak and stagnant to me. As much as you may hate MS or Sony, the gaming community needs variety to stay fresh and alive and innovative. Personally, I would like to see MS and Sony work together. With Sony's hardware expertise and MS's software expertise, (and finances) it could lead to great things, but those are just pipe-dreams. Until then, all you MS haters should approach MS as a necessary evil.

Answering your question,

IMO, MS needs to show games from first-party studios. I don't want MS buying games from 3rd parties in the begging of the generation just to stop in the middle (like the 360).

First-party studios are a sign of commitment simply because it is an investment for the long-run. If they have first-party studios bringing us good games, then I'm in.

I see the trust thing a lot, and honestly, and this is being dead honest and not an attempt to troll, I can't see where they would give the indication that they can't be trusted.

I hear constant outcries about the recent changes in policy by MS exhibits "un-trustworthiness" on their end, with some going far enough to call them flat out liars, but I'm not sure "untrustworthy" is the proper term. Yes, MS has said a lot of things, just to change their minds later and say another, but this is more of an an example of being "indecisive" not "untrustworthy."

If MS never told anyone about the changes until after consumers bought their product, or just let them find out for themselves, that may be an untrustworthy act, but informing the public of changes before they had a chance to effect anyone? No, not really seeing it. As it is now, their product hasn't even been released yet, and the details surrounding it apparently not finalized, so at this point, I see little harm in tweaking, fine-tuning or even making massive changes to the formula. This is what happens during the development cycle of a product.

Of course, you could bring up past examples of where MS "truly" was untrustworthy to strengthen your case against them, but bringing up the past to validate the future/present, isn't really a strong argument, especially when the past actions are not even what the current debate is about.

You and others apparently have trust issues with MS, and I'm not belittling you of that or even trying to change your mind. Me personally, I have no reason not to trust MS, since I've never felt lied to or betrayed, or any of the other feelings that come with trust or the lack of. I may have had disagreements with them or been disappointed in some choices they made, but this doesn't effect my trust in them.

Maybe my standards are lower or I don't require specific criteria to be met, but I trust MS will deliver a console that gives me countless hours of enjoyment, just like they did with xbox and 360.

And I guess this is where we can agree to disagree, because I (and others) didn't have a problem with their initial policies. Their original plan actually set the X1 apart from the competition. Now they are taking Sony's route, and essentially releasing a glorified last-gen console. I didn't want "xbox 360 v2.0," I wanted something new and different. That being said, I still don't see what this has to do with trust, and the backpedaling doesn't prove your point. All it shows is that there was enough disapproval/backlash towards them, that it warranted a change it plans. It does nothing in proving MS as dishonest or not worth trusting.

From what I see, MS released a console with polices you disagreed with and found unfavorable or even "anti-consumer" (I hate that made up buzzword) and somehow that constitutes a feeling of distrust... I'm still not seeing it. They weren't being deceitful or sneaky with their announcement - Despite the inevitable backlash they were going to receive, they were straightforward and told the public, "this is our vision for the console. If you don't like it, fuck off." That's the opposite of being untrustworthy - that's being brutally fucking honest, and the reversals in policy don't change this either.

MS isn't some activist organization or one man fighting for a cause, they are a business, and as such, when profits/numbers are threatened or negatively effected, changes are made to compensate. I don't direct any blame or hate towards MS for being businessmen and doing business things when one of their investments were threatened, even if that means folding and giving into demands.

The only instance I can see where you would feel distrust towards MS, is if before details were known and before the consoles were revealed, you "trusted" MS to deliver a solid console with features you wanted, even though they never guaranteed you a thing, and when that didn't happen, you felt betrayed, and your "trust" in them waned. If this is the case, that really isn't un-trustworthiness on MS, it is your wishful thinking not coming to fruition.

You may feel a lot of negative emotions towards MS, and for good reason, but I really think your mistrust in them is misplaced.

The market is moving in that direction. There is no doubt about that. Perhaps it was a bit too early for Microsoft to try that approach. I happen to think they were planning for the future i.e. 5 years from now. A lot of products have failed because they were released before there time.

There is no reason to distrust a company simply because it was going to release a product you didnt agree with. You want something to really be untrustworthy about? Sony left account information on there servers in plain text (Serious no-no in the security industry. Probably the most rookie mistake one could make) or Sony purpoesly installing rootkits onto all of their laptops to monitor how their laptops are used by consumers (This is actually worthy of conspiracy theorists time, unlike the Kinect 2 spy box crap which has no legitimate argument)

So Microsoft has released a console with policies that you disagreed with, thats not untrustworthy. They release Windows 8 with a disappointing required UI for the start menu, still not untrustworthy. They wanted to use DRM in their Xbox policies, still not untrustworthy since every digital service does this with the exception of GOG.com.

They didn't say all your investments would vanish but there were no guarantees.

They were very, as you said, frank with the policy of drm though. The constant check-ins online, making profit of the used market, not lending your friends the games you bought etc etc.

I do not for a second think that the digital way of buying games is a threat to us as consumers - but the control method Microsoft wanted to use is. It will be even 10 years from now.

Their people haven't been very trustworthy in their appearances either.
Mattrick left the company after some real blunders.
Major Nelson looks more & more like a tired tv-shop seller for new kitchen peripherals. (And what kind of company gets their own employees to unbox their own product. That's just embarrassing.)

Thing is that everything they've done so far is really bad for my eventual investment. Yes, you might call it that they never fulfilled my "wishes"(?) - I'd rather just say I wont put my money in something that I dont know supports me - as an gamer and consumer.

First of all finalise what the product will be and focus on that.

Second of all, have belief in your product and do not release until fully satisfied there are no problems. Another RROD will be a disaster for MS and for gamers faith in them. If your product is good enough it will sell.

If you really want to copy Sony so much just look at the success of the PS3 even after losing a year due to its late release.

They are focusing on US market first and foremost, my believe is that they cannot live up to the pre-orders in US so they cut off the smaller European countries, and I hope that Sony at least live up to the pre-orders before the aug. 6th deadline.

I live in Sweden and I would be affected if I was going to get the X1, I've got my PS4 day one edition pre-ordered and payed for but that doesn't help me if Sony goes the same route that MS took and delays release until 2014, and that would really suck if they did.

So I was right an American, yes I know that the ps3 had delays in some countries and the 360 was shipped world wide within a month.

Now the difference is that MS had said that they where shipping to 21 countries in 2013 Sony did not with the PS3 as far as I know here in sweden we where told from the begining that there was gonna be delays in release.

Now the people in these 8 countries that now won't get the system was counting on being able to have their system in November, the disappointment for these people is bigger because they had been told they where gonna get the system in 2013 and now they are not.

Sony has also said with the PS4 that everyone in NA and Europe that pre-ordered their system before August 6th will get their system in 2013, we will have to see if they stand by their word on this but I don't think they will brake it since they have a massive opportunity to "own" these countries. Sweden at least is in no way Sony dominated now, I know more people with a 360 than with a PS3 and now all of these people is going for the PS4.
And I believe that MS has made a big mistake because the majority of the people in these 8 will not wait for the X1 and with Christmas coming I se MS having a very hard time coming back from this.

And for the record I was NEVER buying the X1 but I feel sorry for the people that was, would never buy anything from MS the biggest BS company this planet will ever see.

And also the X1 can't even touch PS4 in pre-order numbers! And the PS4 have around 10 million units waiting for shipping, XBone well that's about 6-7 million so stop being so naive MS has just said f you Europe were only interested in the US markets.
