Driveclub Dev: PlayStation 4 Has a Lot of CPU Power, No Need to Worry About GPU Compute for Now

Many are already talking about the ability to perform compute tasks on the GPU of the PS4, that according to the platform’s lead architect Mark Cerny will be available to developers a couple years after the platform’s debut. Evolution Studios is working on Driveclub, one of the console’s launch titles, and Technical Director Scott Kirkland thinks there isn’t much need to worry about GPU compute for the moment, even if the future holds a lot of potential.

Powerful?

PWAHAHAHAHAHA

My HD 7990 has 8.2TeraFLOPS of computing power while the PS4 has 1.8TFLOPS. My gpu is 355% faster than your weaky consulz.

ILive3913d ago

Does it also help you solve all of lifes issues, your hd 7990?

ATi_Elite3913d ago

Your wasting your time. Your HD 7990 or my HD7970 CFX set-up with their Super High compute POWER means Nothing to a Sony fanboy.

in their minds a PS4 is the best thing EVER and nothing new in video games will not be capable until it's on a PS4.

So all that fancy stuff we have been doing on our PC's for like a Decade means nothing until a PS4 does it.

(even though with it's laptop 1.8GHZ CPU and it's soon to be outdated an already out classed HD7850 GPU means NOTHING, PS4 is a GOD and our High end PC's are pretty much CRAP)

xxxsiegezzz3913d ago

He said powerful not most powerful.
My 250hp car is powerful, but not as powerful as lamborghini.
I hate rich bitches who claim to own one.

nick3093913d ago (Edited 3913d ago )

Pcs dont have the console exclusives, ps4 is strong for a console.

@ati, i never said that, lol. I have a strong pc as well. And i own pretty much all consoles that came in the last decade, so no fanboy here.

Smoovekid3913d ago (Edited 3913d ago )

You spent $1,000 on a GPU and brag about it on the internet. Well are'nt you cool.

Old_Prodigy3913d ago

Do you really need all that for Half Life?

Heisenburger3913d ago

Well my foppydeefloop terrorpop xoverninethousand puts you to shame.

Actually I just plug and play. Life is all about the simple things.

Abriael3913d ago

yeah, and it also costs almost twice as much as the PS4 by itself.

Perspective, perspective...

thebudgetgamer3913d ago

Did you pay four hundred dollars for all of that?

SchwoererBear3912d ago

As a console gamer I will of course admit that a pc has better performance and power than a console. Why compare the two? they are for different markets and meant to be used differently. I can plug my console into my tv and use it for a casual gaming device. I think it is unfair to try to compare the two in terms of power.

DeadlyFire3912d ago

Most games don't touch 8.2 Tflops unless gaming at 2K/4K resolution. Kinda overkill there.

A console touching 1.8 Tflops is a positive thing. When they release drivers on the console with fully utilized GPU Compute available to developers. Imagine what will happen when they release the same drivers on the PC platform with all its extra power. :) That is the benefit of this console generation to the PC. 1box and PS4 have 12 and 18 CU. Your AMD 7990 has 64 compute units. All of those fully utilized on a PC game will be amazing when the drivers come for it.

All I need now is a release date and an update on what Naughty Dog, Sony Santa Monica, Quantic Dream, Media Molecule, and Guerilla are working on. Someone please get on that.

Minato-Namikaze3913d ago

They probably dont want to overshadow the launch titles. We might hear something at the VGA's

Destrania3913d ago

We'll be seeing some crazy stuff at Europe GDC, GamesCom and TGS for sure. Naughty Dog however will probably announce their new PS4 game at the VGA's.

Dazel3913d ago

Two words, future proofed.

Convas3913d ago (Edited 3913d ago )

With stacked DRAM, DDR4, ReRam, Dedicated GPUs with ARM processors, PCI-E 4.0 and other tech advancements hitting mainstream within the next 4 years ...

... you can't be serious?

If Nvidia has their way and actually mananges to double the power of the GTX 700 line with the GTX 800 line, gaming will see a jump to 1440p as the resolution of choice.

Which will be out of range EVEN for the PS4.

Future proofed? Not. Even. CLOSE.

GraveLord3913d ago (Edited 3913d ago )

Consoles set the standard for gaming, even on PC. Consoles are the limiting factor. So no matter how much raw power $1000 GPUs have, it doesn't matter. They have to wait for consoles to catch up. Also, most PC gamers game on weak integrated graphics.....

Dazel3913d ago

For consoles it is, there'splenty of raw power in the PS4 that will last it years to come.

As I game on pc mostly, i can have the best of all world's. A bit like now with xbox360 / PS3 and GTX 680 powered pc.

60FPS on PS5: Unofficial PS5 'FPS Boost' mods are radically improving PS4 back compat

Digital Foundry : Whether it's via FPS Boost or bespoke software upgrades, backwards compatibility on the current-gen consoles delivered an unexpected delight - the ability to liberate older console games from their 30fps limits, running them at 60 frames per second or even higher. FPS Boost did the business for Xbox Series consoles on an impressive range of titles, but there was always the sense that PS5 could do more. It's a hunch that checks out as a range of frame-rate unlocks are available for PS5, covering many must-have games - the major caveat being that only exploitable consoles running on older firmwares are invited to the party.

you love to see new life being breathed into older titles but damn the process to get there. It should be automatic that these work for everyone... not just those who exploit their systems. Really wish Sony and MS would keep this program going officially.

Psychonaut85103d ago

Damn this sucks. I want this shit so bad, but I’m not jailbreaking my console. And frankly I shouldn’t have to. I’m not a tech person, but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate? Or would that have to be a large patch?

dveio103d ago (Edited 103d ago )

"but is it really that hard for developers to unlock the framerate?"

I guess it's not.

But it has become a profitable business if you do so.

So no one would pay for only the framerate patched to being unlocked. So studios need to offer more than that.

But this would take more time, polishing and would cost more money. So they shy away, but won't unlock the framerate, either.

That's just my personal assumption. But from what I can comprehend technically, it shouldn't be difficult to unlock framerates via a patch for older games.

... if it hadn't became a business.

RaidenBlack103d ago (Edited 103d ago )

frame-rate unlock should be free ...
We've seen many devs offer free patches and updates to pretty old PC titles, even bonuses ... so why can't devs offer the frame unlock patch for free (in consultation with the platform-producers) for a title from just a generation earlier?

Einhander1972103d ago

RaidenBlack

"frame-rate unlock should be free ..."

Obviously the result of that thinking is that developers aren't even going to do it.

If they had been allowed to charge $5-10 you would see incentivized developers doing it way more often.

People just always want everything for free, but it's not free to make the patch, people have to code it then other people have to test it, and there will always be other costs involved.

If people want dollar store gaming then expect to get what you pay for.

shinoff2183102d ago (Edited 102d ago )

Raiden I might be wrong but last I thought it cost money to put patches out on consoles.

As far as me paying for it, I'm not all that interested tbh. Not enough to pay for it with older games, and newer games have been pretty decent about it for the most part.

dumahim103d ago

Sounds like the modder has to go in to make changes to unlock it on a game by game basis. "Simple" enough to do it unofficially, but to have it done officially, they need someone to go in a make that change, put out a patch and put it through certification, which I believe is not necessarily a cheap thing to do. It's questionable if going through this would then give them enough sales to make it worthwhile.

Inverno102d ago

Many games still have physics tied to framerate, i think it's cause they wouldn't want to go in and do anything extra. Then there's the 10 dollar upgrades they rather charge. The problem is that there's no compromise, cause if I could mod my PS4 and all I'd lose is online play then id jailbreak it immediately. Mods have done so much for PC games and they could do the same for consoles, but manufacturers hafto be willing to compromise.

shinoff2183102d ago

It's not to hard to do and there's youtube videos that break it down really well. ANyway most of us here arent able to break are console anyway due to being up to date on firmware from playing

Chocoburger103d ago

Yep, this sucks having to require a jailbreak for something that should be standard in our industry by now. I learned my lesson when PS4 was jailbroken and I didn't keep a console on low firmware for years, but now I'm holding onto two low firmware PS5s specifically because there are features I'll be able to do that you can't do on official firmware, so this will pay off for me soon enough.

Jin_Sakai102d ago

It should be a sin to let these games sit and be stuck at 30fps.

EazyC102d ago

RDR 2 not getting a 60FPS patch for PS5 was a crime.

ah its changed to a video now, strange, but il take it

Dirt rally doesn't even make the list? Errm OK then.

Driveclub is over rated as well, with middle of the road handling and the 30fps killed it upon arrival for me.
