Are Games Getting More Mature or Are Gamers?

It just means that gamers are getting more diverse. Gaming used to be only for nerds and children, but now that 18-34 demographic is becoming a bigger factor in gaming.

But there are still plenty of screaming 12 y/o's. CoD proves that :D

Yeah, it's a little of both. We wouldn't have gotten games like Journey, The Last of Us, or The Walking Dead a decade ago.

The stories told, the emotions evoked, they're things that are relatively new. And they're only possible- and successful- because gamers have matured to the point where they can appreciate such things.

As you said, though, it's not a universal change. And it never will be. Which is fine: there's no such thing in any medium. The only real problem we're having now is that people THINK gaming hasn't matured because they don't have any desire to acknowledge the experiences that prove it HAS matured. They THINK it has to be seen across the board for it to occur, when it doesn't.

When people stop trying to force ALL of gaming to adhere to that standard- especially since they don't force the same on anything else- gaming will be even better.

I think this just goes to show that games dont have to have the "fun" factor . Many gamers like myself love when games are able to tell an amazing narrative. Journey, the last of us, the walking dead, heavy rain are a few of the golden gems for me because of the amazing story they pulled off.

While true, I do think that a gamer would need to be more matured to appreciate certain games, or at least certain elements of the game. Just ask a 12 year old his experience with TLOU. It could (and most likely will) differ greatly from a person with a moderately developed emotional intelligence.

Some people are Mature,some aren't. Being a gamer has nothing to do with it. Plus maturity is subjective, to me mature games are games that require genuine intelligence to play like RTS games.Some believe that story heavy games are mature,but would it make you immature if you play games for the game and you watch movies for the story? think about that,Because games aren't on par with good movies as far as story goes.

Both, and here's one possible "why".

There's about two generations of gamers above me which would put them in their mid forties and late thirties. Game companies know their demographics and as of now I believe average gamer age is early 30's. Because of that companies realize that the older audience wants more mature content, hence mature games.

The average age was 37 back in 2011 and it keeps increasing, don't know what it is now.

I doubt it's gone down. Last I heard it was late 30s even if you're only talking about console players, and if PC is added in it's even older than that.

I'd doubt we'd have the continuing Gran Turismo and Grand theft Auto series or even Demon Souls if games were just for kids.
