Why Bungie’s Destiny Worries Me

The mystery that has my interest piqued revolves around the business side of Destiny, and by that I mean specifically what will be monetized and how.

yes this game reminds me of MS and their always on policies, that is the elephant in the room that people arent addressing. Ive said this a thousand times no one is listening. To use the power of the cloud you neeed to constantly update the game who is paying for this. with bungies game its is suppsoed to be evloving. who is payin gfor this, im all abou ta game changing and stuff but who is paying for this.

Chaostar3920d ago

The game has loads of MMO like features, of course it's going to need (or at least recommended) to be online.

MS have created an awful stigma around online only games that they just don't deserve.

JBSleek3920d ago

No one is listening because your concern is a non factor.

Since when did people get concerned about this in a massive multiplayer role playing game.

That is like faulting WoW for being always online...Well yes that's the point.

Johnsonparts233920d ago

right but WoW has a monthly subscription. Thats his point. Where's the money coming from thats going to fund these changes and evolution?

vickers5003920d ago (Edited 3920d ago )

@Johnsonparts23

From the millions and millions of undeserved sales that they get from Call of Duty?

Maybe Activision finally decided to invest some of that dough into something other than CoD marketing.

_QQ_3920d ago

This game is pretty much an MMO, of course it is always online. There are already SOOO many always online games that do just fine, Why are some console only gamers so opposed to always online.

i understand why thats a problem when applied to a system but when a game is always online then that means it is meant to be played online."Who is paying for this" you are when you buy the game and buy your PSplus/Xboxlive,thats how it works.PC has had online only games for years.

Lord_Sloth3920d ago (Edited 3920d ago )

I don't mind staying signed in for my games since I do so to message my friends but if the connection dies (which is does sometimes in my area for a few hours to a couple of days) then I'm stuck without the ability to play it solo. If it lets me do that then it's all good, if not then I'll be forced to move games if I don't really want to.

I know it's a small gripe but it's still there so...

I'm not worried about anything else (payment methods) with the game really.

thrust3920d ago

Can not wait for this game.

it will be so good on xbox live!

ramtah3920d ago

it will be better on ps4!

Lord_Sloth3920d ago

Please, people. Let's not start a console war here. Let's just talk about the game itself or the article.

mo2413920d ago

Lord sloth, you must be new here

Lord_Sloth3919d ago

Nope. Just askin the impossible like always. XXXD

SuperLupe3920d ago

Having a real hard time getting hyped for this game despite all the media hype and PR talk.

Nothing I've seen so far screams "one of the most ambitous games ever created".

aliengmr3920d ago

I feel exactly the same.

Its not that its looks bad or anything, but its talked about like its the 'second coming', and I just can't see it.

This is kind of unique because It really has nothing to do with the actual quality of the game. It looks well made and fun. But the hype surrounding it doesn't match what I've seen.

Krosis3920d ago

They will make their money on endless expansions and DLC. If they can, they will make this into their own "WoW". This looks cool so far. This and Titan fall might get me back into the online games scene.

NioRide3920d ago

I always love when people say "WoW"

since it has taken everyone of its ideas from other games. haha.

Krosis3920d ago

I was really referring to WoW's immense success and not it's originality or lack thereof.

NioRide3920d ago

Its success was because of its copying other ideas.

_QQ_3920d ago (Edited 3920d ago )

@NIO Ride, well obviously WOW's execution of the ideas was much better. Everyone copies ideas, if not only Nintendo systems would have anolog sticks, and only The very first RPG would have leveling up.

blackmanone3920d ago

Destiny doesn't worry me, but it does manage to interest me less than Halo did. Sci Fi light for people that don't "really" like sci fi.

Mr Tretton3920d ago

Destiny interests me more than Halo ever did.

Destiny Made Over $160 Million In Microtransaction Revenue In Less Than 2 Years

Destiny has made over $160 million in MTX revenue, and these numbers only account the data from late 2017 to early 2019.

Sgt_Slaughter330d ago

That's extremely low for microtransactions, especially for a game that's essentially designed around it

LucasRuinedChildhood330d ago (Edited 330d ago )

This was back when the game wasn't free to play.

The figures are from November 2017 to February 2019 (1 year and 4 months).

Based on that projection, the MTX revenue for Destiny 2 likely would have been closer to ~$240m for 2 years.

Not sure if premium expansions are included in that figure either although ... I'd hope that they are though and that most of the revenue was for actual content like Forsaken.

People spend way too much money on cosmetics.

Rude-ro330d ago (Edited 330d ago )

Seasons($10 and just got bumped to $12) and dungeon keys($10 each, two a year) are through the eververse(micro transaction) store.
So for those two years, in order to play a season, you would pay through micro transactions.

Sonic1881330d ago (Edited 330d ago )

Bungie Marathon will be worse since it's designed around it as well

Kurt Russell329d ago

It makes me sad to agree... but at the same time I am looking forward to giving it a go. Destiny 2 is so far in, I find it difficult to figure out what I am meant to do first.

buffig330d ago

I think FIFA alone makes over $1bn a year from mtx

anast330d ago

FIFA promotes a worldwide sport. It should make more money than destiny.

CantThinkOfAUsername330d ago (Edited 330d ago )

Let's compare something similar. Apex Legends and its ridiculous $18/$40 skins make EA a billion each year.

z2g329d ago

For as much as ppl complain how much they hate microtransactions, they sure don’t act like it. No wonder they aren’t going anywhere.

spicelicka329d ago

By "people" you're referring to millions and millions of people. Obviously the ones complaining aren't necessarily the same as the ones spending all that money.

There's millions that purchase MTX and there's nothing we can do about it

I've been thinking about playing through D1 again before it goes away...

CobraKai481d ago

That’s the sad reality of a game like this. I bought it, invested lots of money, and it can go away at anytime. I still think this was more fun than 2.

jeromeface480d ago

prob because 2 is a grindfest slog

spoonard477d ago

That's the bummer of 'games as a service'.
