Firstly, the facts are that Sony has consitently proven that they support their systems with exclusives, right from PS1, PS2, and PS3. PS4 will be no exception, there will continue to be loads of exclusives for the PlayStation. If MS can keep up with them, then hats off to them, but I seriously doubt they can put out as much games as Sony can.

Secondly, $1 Billion means nothing when you consider that this is for the ENTIRE generation. That's right, the entire generation, and it probably include marketing costs, exclusive DLC from third parties. It won't last long.

Sony have shown time and time againt here not software developers and the OS for ps3 and vita have been shockingly bad...

the ps3 one is so simple in its design yet so clunky to get around... There hardware manufactures and designers at the heart and thats what theyll be forever...

MS is the exact other way around which is why the 360 even with ads was a lot better fluent experience to use... i didnt feel like killing myself when i wanted to check my achievements as i had to stop playing for 10 mins for to load up...

Nah the XMB blew the 360 dashboard out of the water in terms of cohesiveness and aesthetics. So much so that MS had to update their interface into more of an XMB style interface (just with a ridiculous amount of ads and a marketplace for every single medium. Why not merge them?). Cannot speak for the Vita but it reminds me vaguely of iOS with bubbles. As for X1 and PS4, only time will tell, but both look like evolutions of the XMB (with inspiration from social media apps). I expect both to control a little better (or differently?) thanks to kinecton X1 and move/the touchpad on PS4.

The AI is realistic. They have to see, hear, or hear from other AI that you are behind them. You must think Call of Duty AI is good because they are so static they always know where the player is.

That is how it works in real life. You don't just magically know someone is behind you and in the heat of battle not everyone will realize someone is flanking them on there own.

KillZone has some of the best AI this gen. Artificial Intelligence is not about being smart and knowing where the player is. It is about emulating a humans senses and reactions, artificially, in the virtual world and this does that great. They act like real players do. Of course if you don't play on higher settings their reaction time and reactions themselves aren't going to be as smart.

This tech demo was still using the engine from beyond two souls and it ran between 30 to 90 frames per second because it wasn't optimized. This stuff is totally doable on next gen consoles, especially the ps4. And before you say that this comparison is not fair because the dark sorcerer is a "small" tech demo and crysis 3 is a game with huge open levels; the xbox 36o and ps3 were able to run it. Both extremely outdated.

It's a balance between both. If all you care about is graphics then why don't you get yourself a PC?

A lot of the features and the possibilities of a well made OS compliment gaming, not go against it. Party chat, streaming and recording, instant turning on and switching between games and joining gaming sessions, and lots more. Consoles aren't and won't ever be the ultimate graphical powerhouses if all you care about is extra juice for the graphics.

@DragonKnight, it's enough ram for games for now. Surely the OS isn't gonna be using all the ram that is currently allocated to it, they are just future-proofing the console. As time goes on, they will give ram back to the games, they can't do it the other way around if they want some cool new feature that they don't have enough ram for. So, taking more than they need at first is the only way to secure that ram for possible new and cool OS features.

The OS is based on FreeBSD, which has an extremely small memory footprint, has great security, and is exceptional at multitasking. All the devs have been going on about how much extra ram they have so far, and some even saying they aren't sure what to do with it all yet.

So, it should be fine, and by the time devs would be ready to start whining about memory restraints, they'll probably have already been given back another 1GB or so.

Technology evolves over time. Video game consoles evolve over time. Video games evolve over time. The more evolved these consoles get, the more STUFF they're gonna be able to do.

With today's standard for gaming, social interaction is a fundamental necessity. Having party chat, text chat, voice and video chat. Being able to talk to your friends during games or even when your'e not playing a game. People like that ability to engage in social integration with their friends and peers. This takes up a certain amount of RAM reserved for the OS.

Being able to access your web browser while in game, pull up guides and video walkthru's or look for cheats...or even if you wanna check your email or facebook messages, without having to save and quit the game your'e playing. All that takes up a certain amount of RAM reserved for the OS.

Being able to hit the SHARE button and upload little 15 minute clips of your gameplay to your friends, sharing those epic moments in gaming or simply being able to show your homies what part in the game your'e stuck at. All that takes up a certain amount of RAM reserved for the OS.

Being able to listen to your own custom soundtracks, your own MP3's on your HDD while in game, instead of being restricted to the soundtracks the developers force on you. Being able to access the PSN store while in game or in a party chat and download that new AAA title. All of that takes up a certain amount of RAM reserved for the OS.

Being able to access Gaikai's cloud service, download or stream games in the background while in game, the ability to do multiple things at once. All of that takes up a certain amount of RAM reserved for the OS.

Then you got the dashboard, itself...which manages your account as well as your friends, purchases, trophies and advertisements.

One could say that if you wanna be able to do most of those things, you could simply just use a PC and use your gaming console for gaming. BUT...gaming consoles are moving ever closer to being PC's and are now able to do many of the things a PC can now do. They've made it so that if you prefer...you dont HAVE to rely on your PC for these extra things. Console developers are trying to make a console that can be a multimedia machine and service ALL of your needs...from one device in your living room.

And if they have to reserve a little bit of RAM to be able to pull that off, while still being able to produce high quality games...so be it.

You people are acting like the games are gonna suffer dramatically, just because Sony has chosen to reserve a couple gigs for the OS. Calm down, folks. Thats not the case.

You can list all of the technical feats of the Present Day all you want to but the fact of the matter remains that when you're in the game, none of that matters. Next gen games are already "better"...just by sheer technical evolution. They dont need to reserve every single GB of RAM for the games for the end user to fully enjoy their experience. Having an efficient OS is equally important with today's consoles, whether you want to acknowledge it or not. And I can guarantee you that if Sony gave the PS4 a shitty OS in order to allocate extra RAM for the games and just made it strictly a gaming console....it wouldnt sell as well, let alone keep up with the competition.

In the end, the point is moot. This is what Sony is doing. This is the direction Sony is taking the PS4 and this is the direction gaming consoles as a general whole, is going. It's already a done deal.

Well, lucky for all Sony gamers...we get both; a great OS and great games. So the hypothetical question of which would you prefer more...is irrelevant. As a gamer and admitted Sony fanboy, I do want the best possible games the machine can produce, with today's current tech. And I am satisfied and confident that even with 5.5GB of RAM, the PS3 will deliver. No doubt. And that's good enough for me. In the same vein, I also see the benefits of having a high performance OS and yes, I do like the extra perks that comes along with it. Are they necessary? Of course not? Can the PS4 function just fine without it? Sure it can. Would I buy it without being able to multitask all my multimedia needs, and serving to function soley as a gaming device? NOPE!

And that doesnt mean Im in the wrong hobby, either. It just means I know what I like in a gaming console and what Im looking for. My preferences. As a gamer, my first priority is to the games. No doubt. But when im done playing games and I want to listen to music, it better be able to play my music. If I wanna watch a movie on my external HDD, it better play my movies. If I wanna voice chat with my friends, it better let me do that, etc...

I'm a high maintenance gamer, and I fully expect Sony to accommodate all my needs and preferences, even when they're not limited to JUST GAMES. I dont want a million different devices for doing a million different things. I want an All-In-One device. Microsoft had the right idea...they just did it wrong. Sony will do it better. ^_-

yeah well, you can still use a rotary phone too if you want. you act like having a os is a bad thing. games on the ps4 can be streamed faster, can be downloaded in sections (such as single player or multiplayer) to start faster. you can send tweets, facebook, upload video and all of those social things while playing a game. you will be able to use the playstation store while your game is running.

so what is so wrong with all of that? absolutely nothing because you dont have to do any of that. you can still play a game by yourself.

4.5 gigs of RAM is way more that's needed. Does anyone know of any PC games that uses more than 5 gigs of RAM? Does anyone know of any game that was actually made superior because of RAM? If I remember correctly, all the best games that came out of this generation, most of them were on consoles and RAM had nothing to do with that. So for you guys who keep talking about specs, yet haven't developed 1 freaking game in your life, maybe you should stick to arguments that you actually have a valid point in, because in the RAM argument you have none.

Ram is great but its not going to create new worlds! Those worlds are already created on current generation with much less ram! Personally both is better but wait until Sony announce something official.Even Sony 1st-party studios didn't have any clues about 8 GB of GDDR5.Now we have people talking about the usage of GB of games is 5.5GB.If you truly think Sony would only reserve less then 6 GB for their talented developers of would be crazy.Don't be surprise if shock everyone and say PS4 will allow 8GB for games and the OS have an special chip made for it.

I know that seem extreme but 8GB for games would be bring gaming too new heights,the possibilities amount of games we could see is amazing too even dream about.Also Playroom could shock alot of gamers if an horror games is made exclusively for that mode.Man I'm so excited with next-gen gaming.Also PC and PS4 will have cross-play.With the amount of indie support PS4 might be receiving in the future is mind-blowing.

Why all this aggression over which console is best? I'm getting the console I want and could not care less about everyone else. The PS4 is for me the better console not only because of exclusives because for me MS can have a gazillion more exclusives they are just gonna be FPS or TPS games anyway. So since I want some variation in games Sony is the better choice, and also I want my consoles life to be longer than a year so I go with the PS4 it's that simple. SONY = good quality, MS = crap quality, and I learned that from the 360 doesn't seem anyone else nor MS did though.

And I don't think the latest news about the PS4 OS RAM is entirely true people are jumping their guns WAY to fast but that is their problem if they choose the XBone for that reason they are making a big mistake in my opinion.

And for the question asked in the headline, I want good games.
