I Just Figured Out What’s Bothering Me About Splinter Cell: Blacklist

Kotaku: "Everything that I know so far about Splinter Cell: Blacklist tells me that I should like it: it’s a beautiful, globe-trotting third-person adventure that gives you a ton of freedom to play the way you want. But, each moment I’ve laid eyes on it, I’ve been bothered by this nagging feeling in the back of my head."

"Conviction felt tenser and more personal than other Splinter Cell games and teased an intriguing shift for the franchise’s future."

Personal? Yes. Tense? No.

Conviction was easy-peasy and I had no problems steam-rolling through that game in about six hours flat. I never fully conquered Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory because it was too hard and I loved that game for that very reason (I also had a ton of other games I was playing at the time, too).

Blacklist's biggest problem is that they young'end Sam and then gave him a really bad, kill-all attitude. It's just not Sam Fisher anymore... it's a wannabe Jack Bauer who isn't half as hardened and has even fewer reasons to be as bitter.

Einhert3927d ago

I would like an actual tactical stealth experience.

Conviction was just a bad arcade game that completely devolved splinter cell as a series.

CrossingEden3927d ago

yes, adding more gameplay options and adding it so that people can play the game the way they want and being able to upgrade to suit it to your playstyle is the epitome of devolving

Einhert3927d ago (Edited 3927d ago )

Conviction had more options than Chaos Theory?

Not sure if srs

Dr Pepper3927d ago

"yes, adding more gameplay options and adding it so that people can play the game the way they want and being able to upgrade to suit it to your playstyle is the epitome of devolving"

Wow. So taking away: the ability to hide bodies, gadgets like sticky shockers, the ability to whistle, etc., was giving the player more options? What an odd world you live in.

Sorry, but unlimited ammo and an instant multi-kill button (mark and execute) are terrible examples of a great leap forward in gameplay.

CrossingEden3927d ago

evidently know one figured out that i'm talking about splinter cell blacklist -_-

Dr Pepper3927d ago

"evidently know one figured out that i'm talking about splinter cell blacklist -_- "

Seeing as how you responded to a comment about Conviction, and used the same terminology as he/she did in a sarcastic manner to defend said game (devolving), it's kind of weird that you now claim to be talking about Blacklist.

So you only played Splinter Cell to hear his voice? This looks closer to the first 3 Splinter Cells that we've had in awhile. But all it takes is a voice actor to be replaced...I was quite bummed to see him go but this looks too good to pass for that reason alone. To each his own...

likeaboss3023926d ago

If it was a complete reboot of the series I'd be ok with a new voice actor. However, it's not so I'm approaching this game with caution. Michael's voice was a perfect fit for the character.

Honestly I'm kind of checked out of this gen anyways. Putting my money towards next-gen gaming.

theWB273926d ago

I'm right with you about being checked out of this gen. Splinter Cell and GTA are the only titles left I wanna play.

SIRHC133927d ago

I want Chaos Theory 2.0. Too much to ask?

yaz2883927d ago

did you play the rest? (SP1,PD,DA) just curious.

SIRHC133927d ago

Just Chaos, Double Agent, and Conviction. I didn't get into SC till the start of this gen.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell - A Decade in the Shadows

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell has been out of action for a decade, so it's time to look back at 2013's Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

CoNn3rB245d ago

Sam Fisher is evidently the most skilled stealth operative because no-one has seen him in his own game for years

kevco33245d ago

10 years, in fact. He must be, like, 60 by now?

phoenixwing245d ago (Edited 245d ago )

why make an inspired game that takes effort when you can half ass it with multiplayer gaas games and filler filled assassins creed games?

That question up there is the reason you don't see splinter cell games

zarbor245d ago

Yup, another example that Ubisoft has no idea what they are doing.

MIDGETonSTILTS17245d ago

The entire mark and execute system belonged in another game.

It’s cool, but the polar opposite to how Sam Fisher initially handled.

The original trilogy made shooting very, very difficult, yet a viable option, which ultimately motivates stealth.

The mark/execute system makes shooting stupid easy, to the point of why would you even bother trying stealth as an alternative?

FYouDad245d ago

Because Ghost is the method fans of the series actually prefer? IMark and execute is never forced upon the player you liiterally never have to bother using it even once throughout Blacklist.

Tody_ZA245d ago

The sad part is that I actually really enjoyed the last game, Blacklist. It may have lacked the iconic voice but the gameplay was excellent, and blended stealth, action and a mix really great compared to most games, where none of the three options felt like the wrong way to play. I really hope they either produce a remake of the original game or a proper sequel.

Rikimaru-00245d ago

Isn't UBI Soft remaking splinter cell.

Sam Fisher Deserves Better

Alex S. from Link-Cable writes: "Ubisoft, we need to chat. Please, have a seat. Thanks. Ok, so I think you know why you’re here. No it has nothing to do with all those game delays, we’ll talk about that later. What? No it’s not about the Skulls & Bones and Beyond Good & Evil 2 falling off the face of the Earth, just listen. We need to talk about Splinter Cell. Don’t give me that look, you know this conversation needs to happen. The way you’ve treated the series, its fans and poor Sam Fisher himself is sad, infuriating and just plain disappointing and it needs to stop."

The Fish!!!

I'd love to see a remastered edition of those games as well as something new. It's about time.

UltraNova1485d ago

MGS is done, at least as we know it so it's now or never Ubi, give Fisher the reboot it deserves. And for Gods sake, don't you dare turn Splinter Cell into another Division/Ghost reckon online abomination instead of a SP focused steath action game!

Psychonaut851485d ago

You know they will though. This is Ubisoft we’re talking about

zachyBROosevelt1485d ago (Edited 1485d ago )

I would love a new splinter cell, maybe even a reboot at this point. Sam Fisher deserves it

Profchaos1485d ago

I think reboot the entire franchise the games were great but every time they try to make him human like a father or something it comes of as unbelievable

hiawa231485d ago

They added damn near every SC game to Xbox1X back compat enahnced list. That is a lot of Sam enhanced and I am loving it, but Sam deserves a new next gen game.
