Resident Evil (1996) Is One Of The Most Important Games Ever Conceived

CGUK:
"A crouched, broad, human-like figure grunted inexplicably. The stomach-turning snorts came to a sudden halt. A brief moment of silence swept the room like a graceful Swallow. The figure meticulously turned its suspended, lifeless limbs until its origin was revealed. A citrine, leathery, cracked blanket matted the beast's decadent skull. It's eyes of the darkest abyss severed any chances of hope I had left. Situated below the drained relic of a nose was a tightly-drawn mouth, sucked of any life, oozing with a red humanly fluid.

The beast snarled.
There was no way out."

Nice write up on a classic game. Reading your feature really took me back to my first time exploring that ominous mansion in 1996.

Alone in the Dark anyone!

Crazay3922d ago

Alone in the Dark was also a very important franchise at one time. I also think that some of the point and click horror story PC Games from the 90s were extremely influential in the gaming narrative we play today.

Stsonic3922d ago

You just made me think of a point and click horror game I used to play as a child. For the life of me I can't remember what it's called. All I remember is a scary room with a piano, the color scheme was mostly black and white.

Pozzle3921d ago

Alone in the Dark was a great horror game (one of my favorite point and click games of my childhood). But it didn't have the cultural/innovative importance that Resident Evil did. Resident Evil really brought survival horror to the forefront of gaming. I miss how popular that genre was. :(

I would have to agree with the title statement alone.

I’d have taken a few of those out. Prefer Sonic over Sonic 2. Outrun should be in there. Maybe even Pong as millions of people had fun with that even if it was repetitive. Final Fight pipped any Streets of Rage game, although Streets of Rage had the better soundtrack. Too many to list l guess. To me, retro gaming is the 1980s, maybe going into early 1990s.

Agree that the generational gap is too broad to really make a strong list. Need to tighten the years a bit. Hard to compare Pac Man with N64 games.

REmake vs. Resident Evil 2: Which Remake Template is Better?

REmake kept the original style adding new flavour and graphics, Resident Evil 2 is a complete modernisation. Which remake style is superior?

TheBrainZ59d ago

The GameCube remake was stunning for its time but the new modernisation efforts are breathing some much-needed life into the older games.

kevco3359d ago

I loved the GC remake back in 2000-whatever. But I tried replaying it recently and just couldn't deal with the door loading sequences.

Have I been spoilt by modern games? Probably.

Neonridr59d ago

tank controls just don't work in this day and age.

Babadook758d ago

I think Tomb Raider still works but RE I'm not sure.

Neonridr58d ago

@Babadook7 - imagine an updated Resident Evil or Tomb Raider with tank controls? you can't walk and turn at the same time. It would be ridiculous to play.

__y2jb59d ago

Both are fantastic but the old style controls and the half way house attempt to modernize them in remake both feel extremely dated now. Taking away your preference for the various settings and characters, the recent remakes are objectively better games.

rippermcrip59d ago

I think anyone voting for REmake is simply doing it out of nostalgia. No way a new young gamer is going to pick that over the new ones. I couldn't even get my son to play the game for more than an hour.

KyRo59d ago

Nope. REmake has a totally different vibe, feel and tension that the newer remakes can't replicate due to the camera angle. Yes the original fixed camera was used for technical reason but at the same time, they created a feeling of dread not knowing what was around the corner. You simply don't get that with a third person camera as great as the third person RE games are.

FYouDad58d ago

Depends what sort of experience you're looking for. If you enjoy the old fixed camera OG style then REmake is to me the pinnacle of the form. Incredible atmosphere, visual style and a fantastic revision of Resident Evil 1 with additions that feel completely seamless. Resident Evil 2 Remake in an excellent update (especially running with the IMO vastly superior original RE2 soundtrack) with the benefits of modern design but I still prefer the original game.. it didn't "overwrite" that experience in my mind the way REmake felt like it became the definitive RE1 experience.

Eternal Darkness was way ahead of its time especially for a Nintendo exclusive.

I would love to see a remake or sequel (multiplatform)

Ristul94d ago

When I see Eternal Darkness, I klick!

TheBrainZ93d ago

Not to sound too repetitive but Eternal Darkness all the way!

GaboonViper93d ago

Eternal Darkness is one of my most favourite games of all time.

4 people love Eternal Darkness.

Quick! Jump on that remake, whoever holds the rights these days.
