Does Anybody Care About Second-Screen Experiences?

According to 30,000 IGN readers who responded to a survey, the most valuable and interesting second-screen gaming experience is looking at inventory and maps.
In the survey, IGN asked which features -- asynchronous multiplayer, maps, inventory, asymmetrical multiplayer, controller functionality -- users were interested in. Users could express interest in features and disinterest in the concept for various platforms they owned.

I do its an awesome addition to gaming.

I'll use remote-play between PS4 and VITA, that sounds like a good feature to have.

As for app companion stuff; I'm not sure.

LOGICWINS3929d ago

Thats not really second screen though. Your EITHER playing a PS4 game on the PS4 or a PS4 game via remote play, hence choosing between one screen or another.

We haven't seen how the Vita can enhance a PS4 title on the big screen.

_QQ_3929d ago

That isn't SS experience...

WeAreLegion3929d ago

LittleBigPlanet 2 uses the Vita as a second screen.

badz1493929d ago

Sly 4 uses the Vita as 2nd screen too. but that's just to help you find treasures and fully optional.

basically, I don't really care about 2nd screen though as if I did, I would have bought myself a DS or 3DS by now but I just don't get the appeal...and granted that I am not the biggest fan of Nintendo games.

the thing work great on DS/3ds because the screens arevery close and you can look the other screen in a split of second, you almost don't loose sign of the first screen some times... same thing can't be said of WIIU, the thing is a bit slow and you lose the focus in the first screem when you look at the screen in your hands in most of time.

dedicatedtogamers3929d ago

I like second-screen stuff on an integrated system like the DS or 3DS. I also like having the entire game streamed to a handheld screen (Wii-U, Vita).

However, taking stuff off the main TV and putting it on a smaller screen? Reeks of gimmick, IMO, and not that interesting.

LOL_WUT3929d ago

If only one could take the gamepad anywhere it would've made it all that awesome. Nintendo really let that one go. ;)

IGN are on a roll with flamebait articles. What happened to this website? =/

lashes2ashes3929d ago

How is this a flamebait article. It's a interesting question, with all three systems doing second screen experiences do the gamers really even care. For me its hard to say, right now I'm not impressed with it but I see if done right it could be amazing.

JohnCartenper3929d ago

Integration between Window$ 8 tablets /Wp8 phones and XB1.

The second screen could be use to look at your inventory and map in a RPG or Statistics/formations in a sport game and so on

Number-Nine3929d ago

I was going to say no but then i thought about how easy the water temple in ocarina of time was with the 2nd screen.

Death3929d ago

Second and third screens on a PC are killer. A second screen done right on consoles would be a very cool thing. The biggest problem I see is how to access it. Nintendo did a real nice job integrating the screen into the controller. It's very natural feeling, but stll has it's limitations. The key to the second screen is to increase immersion. If this can't be done it shouldn't be used.

Golden Axe is a great game I enjoyed it on the SMS, Genesis and in the arcade. Great game but it truly was a quarter eater back in the day. I wish Sega could get the rights to the arcade port of Moonwalker another great arcade game I enjoyed. Collect so many monkeys and become Robo Michael lol.

It was worrisome to begin with.

It's a niche genre with only a handful of hits that can stand the test of time.

Cacabunga1d 10h ago

I like the sound of that!! I will for sure never support these gaas games.
Sony must be shocked at gamer's reaction, making them cancel a few of these and hopefully go back to the good heavy hitters they had us used to..
now bring on that PSPro reveal and show us some SP 1st party awesomeness.

CrimsonWing692d ago

What’s to be unsure of!? Look at the ratio of success to failure!

DarXyde1d 13h ago

It's pretty ridiculous.

Imagine having a breadth of data at your disposal to see the statistically low success rate of these games, only to be laser focused on the exceptional case studies.

shinoff21832d ago

Yes. Stop all the live service bs.

jznrpg2d ago

Only a few will catch on. You need a perfect storm to be successful in GaaS and a bit of luck on top of that. But a potential cash cow will keep them trying and some will go out of business because of it.

Helldivers 2 manages just fine…

Keep production costs low… don’t just make custscenes until the mechanics and enemies are perfected first.

Make so much content that you can drip extra content for years, and the game already feels complete without them.

Most importantly: make weapons, enemies, levels, and mechanics that will stand the test of 1000 hours. This might require more devs embracing procedurally generated leveled, which I think separates Helldivers 2 from Destiny’s repetitiveness.
