Ouya: A charming but flawed $100 video game console

Today, video game systems are dominated by Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. They make big, expensive, state-of-the-art gaming consoles that attract the world's top developers and the most intricate games.

But the fastest-growing video game segment has no use for all those bells and whistles. Smartphone and tablet games are cruder and simpler but are often as fun and innovative, and immensely popular with the average consumer who would never dream of shelling out $500 for a video game console.

Got one, i dont use it as a console at all.
Streaming tv is what its great for.

Reibooi3936d ago

I was thinking about getting only because I heard about the fact that it can do some emulation and that would be nice.

That said I kinda don't want to buy it just for it to not be supported or fade away as a fad. So I think I will wait about a year and if it's still around and still kicking I will pick one up for sure. Hell if I have a decent bit of extra cash before then I won't mind getting it early. 100$ isn't really all that much in the grand scheme of things.

LOGICWINS3936d ago

I was using it at my friends house earlier this week. He just got it. Its actually pretty fun. I can see it being a forced to be reckoned with if combined with the Oculus Rift.

Get it for Nintendo emulator too.

its a misshapen phone with no ability to be a phone

brianunfried3936d ago

I want one just for console and arcade emulation on my TV.

Would be cool, if my $240 tablet already didn't do this, and is capable of being on the go.

I also like how I can just download .apk from my pc and install things with ease when they aren't on the market.

jeffgoldwin3936d ago

True but your tablet doesn't come with a full sized controller and not everyone has a tablet. But I get wut u say.

NioRide3935d ago

No, it doesn't come with one you are right.

However, I did have a ps3, and a extra controller which I kept when I sold it.

Which is now synced to my PC and my tablets. *all 3 actually*, And I'll usually put the controller in my bag before I go to work or out for the day.

I had the LaserActive... it was a nice collectors piece but not very practical. Especially when it came to needing recapping. I think i paid all of about $50 for the floor model from an incredible Universe back in the day. I ended up selling it many years later for $300 at the time due to it needing a new laser and the aforementioned recapping.

An honorable mention not on the list would be the VM Labs Nuon. It basically looked like any regular DVD player but it had ports on it for controllers to play specific games. one of which is still exclusive to it with Tempest 3000. It also offered nuon enhanced DVD movies with extra content not accessible by regular players.

How has this article missed out Sega's Dreamcast and Nintendo's Wii U, two consoles that were actually superb devices in their own right, but were seen as failed due to lacklustre sales at the time of release?

Knightofelemia1577d ago

Wonder how long before Stadia appears on the list surprised the Ngage is not on that list

I enjoy these kinds of articles.

Talk about a blast to the past.......I remember trying the virtual boy at Toy R Us and it was cool but I did feel slightly disoriented afterwards......good article.

That's pretty cool they were able to bring it back. It sucks when something online only gets killed.

I got mine when it first launched, however it wasn't good for anything other than retro emulation. I couldn't sell the thing fast enough. Managed to get almost all my money back selling it on eBay.

Xaywhat1609d ago

Just let go homies. It was DOA

JEECE1609d ago

I guess the Stadia launch is bringing back memories of other failed consoles/services.
