Everyone's second-guessing Sam in Splinter Cell: Blacklist | Joystiq

Joystiq: "In Splinter Cell: Blacklist, series frontman Sam Fisher finds himself in a new position as leader of Fourth Echelon, a black ops outfit assembled by the President of the United States. Fourth Echelon was formed to hunt down The Engineers, a group of terrorists promising to attack American interests every seven days until all US troops are pulled out of foreign countries."

Why is he leading a government black ops force as an agent in the field? It would be like Lambert being the field operative in the original trilogy. Just one of the many aspects I can't help but question in terms of developer choices.

Allsystemgamer3934d ago

Should have made a new agent as the lead character due to lack of ironside/fact that fisher is head of 4E.

Cause it's a videogame and certain liberties can be taken to make us feel a little more bada$$. Is it all that different than the route Agent Hunt has taken in the Mission Impossible movies?

"Cause it's a videogame and certain liberties can be taken to make us feel a little more bada$$. Is it all that different than the route Agent Hunt has taken in the Mission Impossible movies?"

The franchise used to be above such things like "we must include anything and everything that makes it super duper badass". It doesn't make sense in the world Splinter Cell established. At all. Comparing it to Mission Impossible movies where there have been motorcycle fights... holy hell. Just shows where Maxime Beland has taken this series.

theWB273934d ago

It established a world back on the first Xbox. That's a loong time ago. 2002. How many times could we have a game where all that happened was: we get introduced to a bad organization and third echelon sends Sam out on a mission? That's alot of games to keep that same formula. Game and mechanic wise, they're taking the game back to its stealth roots which is the best thing we could ask for.

"How many times could we have a game where all that happened was: we get introduced to a bad organization and third echelon sends Sam out on a mission?"

Have someone send Sam on missions, make him retire, or put him behind a desk and direct other people. What we have now is something absurd. And it wasn't a lot of games at all, it was 3 over the life span of the Xbox, ending in 2005 (with the Shanghai studio making one of those three).

Do you honestly prefer the direction the series has taken with Double Agent, Conviction and now Blacklist?

theWB273934d ago

I actually dig the stories. The going rogue aspect. But I'll hold judgment on this 4th echelon story until I play through it. I do appreciate it going back to its stealth roots.

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell - A Decade in the Shadows

Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell has been out of action for a decade, so it's time to look back at 2013's Splinter Cell: Blacklist.

CoNn3rB240d ago

Sam Fisher is evidently the most skilled stealth operative because no-one has seen him in his own game for years

kevco33240d ago

10 years, in fact. He must be, like, 60 by now?

phoenixwing240d ago (Edited 240d ago )

why make an inspired game that takes effort when you can half ass it with multiplayer gaas games and filler filled assassins creed games?

That question up there is the reason you don't see splinter cell games

zarbor240d ago

Yup, another example that Ubisoft has no idea what they are doing.

MIDGETonSTILTS17240d ago

The entire mark and execute system belonged in another game.

It’s cool, but the polar opposite to how Sam Fisher initially handled.

The original trilogy made shooting very, very difficult, yet a viable option, which ultimately motivates stealth.

The mark/execute system makes shooting stupid easy, to the point of why would you even bother trying stealth as an alternative?

FYouDad240d ago

Because Ghost is the method fans of the series actually prefer? IMark and execute is never forced upon the player you liiterally never have to bother using it even once throughout Blacklist.

Tody_ZA240d ago

The sad part is that I actually really enjoyed the last game, Blacklist. It may have lacked the iconic voice but the gameplay was excellent, and blended stealth, action and a mix really great compared to most games, where none of the three options felt like the wrong way to play. I really hope they either produce a remake of the original game or a proper sequel.

Rikimaru-00240d ago

Isn't UBI Soft remaking splinter cell.

Sam Fisher Deserves Better

Alex S. from Link-Cable writes: "Ubisoft, we need to chat. Please, have a seat. Thanks. Ok, so I think you know why you’re here. No it has nothing to do with all those game delays, we’ll talk about that later. What? No it’s not about the Skulls & Bones and Beyond Good & Evil 2 falling off the face of the Earth, just listen. We need to talk about Splinter Cell. Don’t give me that look, you know this conversation needs to happen. The way you’ve treated the series, its fans and poor Sam Fisher himself is sad, infuriating and just plain disappointing and it needs to stop."

The Fish!!!

I'd love to see a remastered edition of those games as well as something new. It's about time.

UltraNova1480d ago

MGS is done, at least as we know it so it's now or never Ubi, give Fisher the reboot it deserves. And for Gods sake, don't you dare turn Splinter Cell into another Division/Ghost reckon online abomination instead of a SP focused steath action game!

Psychonaut851480d ago

You know they will though. This is Ubisoft we’re talking about

zachyBROosevelt1480d ago (Edited 1480d ago )

I would love a new splinter cell, maybe even a reboot at this point. Sam Fisher deserves it

Profchaos1480d ago

I think reboot the entire franchise the games were great but every time they try to make him human like a father or something it comes of as unbelievable

hiawa231480d ago

They added damn near every SC game to Xbox1X back compat enahnced list. That is a lot of Sam enhanced and I am loving it, but Sam deserves a new next gen game.
