Insomniac admits Spyro “ship has sailed” and Nexus is “only 30 hours and smaller than ACIT”

Great news of course when Insomniac Games announces something new. The beloved duo, Ratchet and Clank are back in a new single-player game called Ratchet & Clank: Into the Nexus. While promising new crazy weapons and “planet hopping” which sounds neat there are some things to be concerned about.

Spyro ship has sailed??? WTF

The last time Insomniac was apart of Spyro was in 2000. And the last decent/successful Spyro game was apart of the SkyLanders Interactive Toy series in 2011. I find it hard to believe that even Insomniac think that there is no hope to re-create or remake another Spyro game.

I'm glad R&C:ItN is only $29.99, but I'm just not so sure about Insomniac Games anymore.

ArchangelMike3941d ago

It might be because activision may now hold the rights to Spyro with the skylanders toy franchise.

HyperBear3941d ago

Yeah I know Activision currently own the rights to Spyro (And Crash Bandicoot, but that's another story...ERRR).

Point is, Insomniac created Spyro and left it after 2000. And for them to say that the "ship has sailed", when they haven't shown any effort to try and buy the IP back or do a publishing deal with Activision to develop another Spyro game, just shows their lack of creativity and imagination that once made them popular.

@HyperBear

Insomniac made Spyro for Universal Interactive, it wasn't their property just because they created it. It's also not a sign of lacking creativity or imagination if they don't make another Spyro game... that's for their OTHER IP's to demonstrate ATM.

HyperBear3941d ago

@yewles1

Re-read both my comments and tell me where I said Insomniac used to own the rights to Spyro? I'm well aware Universal Interactive owned those IP rights then sold them off to Vivendi, who then sold it to Activision. It still doesn't take away the fact that Insomniac are a third-party developer who could've just asked Activision for the rights to make a new Spyro game and cut a deal with them.

And what was creative or imaginative about Fuse? Your telling me that Insomniac couldn't create a better game or attempt at re-imagining a long-lost franchise such as Spyro? Now I'll admit Sunset Overdrive seems to be an interesting twist of a game, but I still think Insomniac could be doing a much better job these days, especially with the Ratchet and Clank series.

yewles13941d ago (Edited 3941d ago )

You said they "left it" and that you wanted them to buy the IP "back", that pretty much means they owned it before... which they didn't.

"And what was creative or imaginative about Fuse?"

THAT'S THE POINT!!! It's not a lack of interest in a previous IP that demonstrates their current performance, it's the poor quality in their current games that's showing what's wrong with Insomniac. I'd rather not have the company in its current state make a Spyro, it may turn out horribly.

“We don’t own Spyro, and it’s been what, 13 years since the last one we made? Never say never, of course, but I think that ship sailed long ago.”

That's the quote, the ship has sailed on Insomniac making Spyro games, the headline is misleading.

Jdoki3940d ago

Insomniac made Spyro in 2000... Activision have taken the IP in a very different direction over the last 13 years.

Maybe Insomniac just don't think Skylanders is a good fit for them now.

Or maybe Activision doesn't want to invest 10million in a AAA Spyro game from Insomniac, when they can get low budget / high margin stuff created by outsourcing.

Sounds like the very definition of 'the ship has sailed'.

Elda3941d ago

30 hours??...I think they meant 30 dollars.

dc13941d ago

30 hours is a very long time for an R&C game.

despair3940d ago

Actually there is zero reference to length in this article other than headline (at least from what I could find). Only thing we know is its not as long as ACiT (which was very long) but much longer than Q4B and FFA which is not a hard thing to beat.

jakmckratos3940d ago

30 hours is a damn long time to me! Im just glad to see a story based Ratchet and of course I hope we see a new series on PS4

Ranking the Ratchet and Clank Games from Worst to Best

From Xfire: "Insomniac Games first introduced the unlikely duo of Ratchet and Clank back in 2002 on the PlayStation 2. Since then, the series has taken audiences on a journey that has spanned not just an entire galaxy, but multiple dimensions, with its most recent outings."

Levii_921040d ago

Best games of the franchise are Up Your Arsenal, A Crack in Time, 2016 Remake and without a doubt the newest one Rift Apart. You simply can’t go wrong with these.

Man what a glorious game series.

neutralgamer19921040d ago

Only ones I don't like as much are all 4 one and full frontal assault other than that all games are awesome( even these are good games just not up to the standard of other games in the series)

victorMaje1040d ago

Nice article, good list, they're all fun & I love this game!
Rift Apart is spectacular.
Insomniac are wizards, I want their next game to be a new Resistance. I can't wait to see what they have in store for us next.

DOMination-1039d ago

Ryan Mccaffrey said last week that Resistance 4 was in development but Sony cancelled it due to the high number of post-apocalyptic games around at the moment.

victorMaje1039d ago

Well that’s a shame. I feel they could do something truly special with today’s technology.

chicken_in_the_corn1039d ago

I'm looking forward to playing Rift Apart then the whole series sometime afterward. Up Your Arsenal is my favourite

10 More Cancelled Vita Games That Should Have Happened

VGChartz's Adam Cartwright: "The Vita has seen a larger than usual amount of cancellations due to its lukewarm sales and aging mobile hardware, and this topic is something I already looked at two years ago, but I've decided to revisit it given that we’ve seen a number of new projects stall in recent months (likely following the recent news that worldwide production has stopped and the console is now discontinued).

So what I’m aiming to look at in this article is ten of the more high-profile games which were either officially announced or heavily rumored to be coming to Vita that ended up never appearing, with an examination of what we knew about them, what they could’ve been, and what happened to them."
