What's wrong with these people??? They act like they still can't buy all their games digitally. And not worry about discs or disc swapping. Cloud computing is still a feature. What do they want, family share plan? There's time I would gladly lend a game to a co worker, but that co worker is not close enough to me to be in my family share list.

As a consumer I like to have choices in how I can buy my products. Sometimes I buy my books digitally, but it's never the same, so I always go back to reading in the old school paper way. I got a collection of comics which one day, I would like to give to my son. Got some rare comics in there also. If it was all digital, my rare comics are not rare anymore. I'm the kind of guy that still reads a newspaper, but also enjoy reading news on my tablet. I like to go to book stores instead of shopping on my kindle....

I don't know why we must stick with one or the other. Why can't we have the option for both? Stupid fanboys, trying to ruin consumers options to buy. I like both digital and physical. They both got their pros/cons.

As an online gaming platform, MS implementation was the least restrictive considering you could:

* share your digital library with 10 people instantanously
* trade-in your digital library
* give/sell the digital library away

For that to work, MS needs to be able to remove the game and know that it is removed (not just trust you) and that is why they need the 24-hour check-in.

Tell me of any other platform that gives you that sort of digital freedom?

I cannot think of a single platform that does! Not even Steam which is the holy grail of digital games! Heck, even on Steam a large number of games are not playable offline.

This was the future, and now we are back in the physical disc stone age. We had options, an always online console with Xbox One and physical disc with PS4 and Wii U.

Microsoft didn't listen to people's complaints, but rather listened to their wallets. Do you think MS would have removed all of their restrictive polices if preorders were on par with PS4 or out pacing it? If people complained, but preorders reflected the opposite of that MS would have kept their XB1 vision in tact.

Microsoft's main reasoning for removing it was to remain competitive. Those that didn't want a restrictive console didn't preorder it and now you are blaming them for that? What happened to if don't like it don't buy it, huh? Well, people did just that and MS was forced to decide on whether they should wait until the XB1 hit the mass market to see if the masses would accept XB1 before deciding to reverse their policies or if they should reverse it now. They untimely concluded that the latter was best for them. It is what it is. This is how business with competition works.

In the end, the consumer will dictate what the future is! As of right now most people still buy physical discs. This may change next gen however with every game having a digital version day one now.

Oh so now the "minority" can affect sales huh? What happened to the "hardcore minority scream the loudest", but the opposite happens as the world keeps spinning when it comes to actual content sold?

What it ultimately boils down to is that most didn't want a console that mandates internet for *any* amount of period of time and didn't want their physical games anymore restricted than what is present today even if we get more flexibility with digital content as benefit. There is no way you can say that the media misrepresented those key concerns.

And yes, people are fine with the way digital content is handled currently which is why nobody is really losing sleep over the benefits that could be had with Microsoft's original policy. What people really didn't want was for discs to be more restricted than they are now. That's what people were upset about.

You also seem to think that the only people that weren't going to buy the XB1 in first place were the ones complaining. If all Xbox gamers were okay with MS' original policies surely XB1 would have sold a lot more initially.

If you don't have a connection you can in fact start in offline mode. Though eventually the user would have to go online depending on titles.
I remember during Hurricane Sandy my internet was out for two months. I was able to stay offline(in Steam) the entire time and play most of my games.

You have to sign in online first and MANUALLY switch to offline mode before you're able to play offline and not to mention there are random bugs that cause games to stop working offline after two weeks (it doesn't always occur but there are many reports around the internet and it affects a large number of people).

Actually steam doesn't only force you to login first to go to offline mode, but also requires re-authentication every 10 days or so.

The actual differences between the XBone and steam is that trading in and selling physical copies of games was still allowed (under some restrictions), and sharing your library with family was also possible. But Steam is indeed one great example of the transition to digital is greatly benefiting the entire PC ecosystem.

This was the best of both worlds for people who wanted transition do digital with added benefits: The people who didn't want that and remain attached to physical discs could have simply got a PS4 instead. It's not a worse console, now is it?

But instead we got an overwhelming backlash from many, including trolls who never intended to purchase the console anyway. And now we're left with basically two consoles working the same way. Way to ruin choice for everyone.

On top of the, with the X1 you still had all of the benefits of physical discs that you could still trade in if you wanted too. Like they said it was steam for Xbox the only difference was on could be played offline and the other couldn't. They both required you to check in every once in a while to authenticate and make sure you wasn't installing the game and then trading it in a GameStop for a cheap discount( if you got it new) or free( if you got it used). Also that system was put in place for security reason just in case dumb ass people ever decided to try to hack their systems.

Overall, I hope they do bring it back. But not make it all or nothing. I see people all the time bitching about freedom of choice and I think Microsoft should give it to them. What Microsoft should do is on day one when people connect their systems to the Internet for the first time they should let the people decide then. If they want the "ORIGINAL" planed policies for the X1 they should have the choice to NOT except the day one reverse policies. If the people don't want the "ORIGINAL" polices then they should have the choice to EXCEPT the day one update and opt out. On 360, you could choose whether to install a disc. Why not make One have the option to enable/disable 'license lock'?
License lock require the disc to enable and would bring back family share, online check-in, and all the other features we love to hate.

Releasing the license would require one last check-in after which, all shared games would be invalidated and users can do whatever with the disc like every other console.

I believe they can allow this on a disc by disc basis and have an added option to release all.

The people who are supporting this petition are the ones that believe that the family share plan would allow any one on the list to play their games without any restrictions. This is the reason why they want the old DRM system back.

All games will be available in digital form on the first day of the release of the retail copy. The same goes for the PS4 as well.

In the end even though you dont have draconian drm policy's you can still buy all your games digitally and not have to worry about changing disks. This is called giving consumers a choice which is something that many people appreciate.

The problem with digital downloads is that once you buy it, it is yours to keep...no resale. If Xbox One kept the install disc option it would have the benefits of both having digital(no disc swapping) and physical(resale of game). All they needed to do was allow the game to be played offline if the disc was inserted.

It's ironic to hear people champion "choice" as they push hard to eliminate it. I would like to have the benefit of a digital copy while retaining a physical copy. That to me is choice. Having to decide between a digital copy or a physical copy narrows down the options, not expands on it. We are quickly moving to an all digital age where DRM is much more restrictive than the proposed plan was. Sony is pushing digital much harder than Microsoft and staying under the radar. Those that swore changing 10 discs for MGS on the PS3 was unacceptable had no problem financing Sony's was against HD-DVD, but today they are happy to swap discs. Between the PSP, Vita, and PS+ with their digital downloads, they are embracing DRM and simply don't know it or understand what it actually is.

I didn't hear about any time restrictions. I had only heard that you couldn't play the same game at the same time...which makes sense, you can't do that with a physical disk either. The one thing that can be agreed on is that the details were not communicated well. I don't think anyone knows for sure exactly how it was going to work. It's already been an issue...even with the removal of the DRM. All of the uncertainty surrounding the policies, at the biggest industry showcase, doesn't look too good for a product that is to be released within a year.

That is a rational suggestion, but you can't test the water if no one is gonna jump in the pool. I agree there are valid points on both sides of the whole fiasco but it comes down to bottlenecking consumer options into a buisness model designed to suck every last penny out of the consumer with features most people don't want and some that exist on other consoles that give consumers the freedom to purchase a game how they choose via disk or download. Taking away choice and forcing your consumer faithful to endure this kind of in your face jump is asking a lot. MS made assumtions based on other markets that gaming can fit into that structure but gamers arent ready for that. MS is trying to expand to a broad audience and trying to attrach more buisness and at the same time restricting and punishing the gamers by forcing them to conform to MS policies, with restrictions and features that no one wants just for the sake of MS trying to pull in the broader audience. Gamers wanna game and gamers have made 360 what it is today. I can see how gamers would feel betrayed by all this, after all gamers are the ones that put the consoles on the map in the first place. MS should have offered more options or even a seperate piece of hardware tailored to consumer demands, not pile everything in One and force people to pay for something they don't want in order to play games.

I doubt that "many people" liked the POLICIES, as you say. However, I believe that people DID like some of the features that went along with the policies. I doubt there were people saying "you know what would be cool, having to connect to my console once a day just to keep my games." However, there were many people that felt like it would be an okay exchange for getting to share up to 10 games. See, the POLICIES weren't great. They didn't really favor the consumers at all. But, some of the features were good. As for the Sony fanboy comment, there is no way that it was just Sony fanboys that kept Xbox pre-orders so low before the DRM reversal. There should be an option for every gamer when you sign up for live or PSN:

Option #1: Buy a game at a certain price and it includes Blu-ray, digital version, all features, and DLC for the game's entire lifecycle with DRM.

Option #2: Buy a game and get nickel and dimed for all features, no digital version, and the ability to trade, rent, or buy it used.

Personally, I would spend $100 for a game if I didn't have to deal with the DLC, in game purchases, etc. But, I know I can afford it and others can't. For them, let them buy it cheaper, and give them the ability to do all the other stuff through micro-transactions.

Like the description of the petition, MS's original stance would essentially make xbox one "Steam for consoles." It wasn't really the features themselves that turned out so bad, but rather the way MS explained everything. When you put like that - "Steam for consoles" doesn't sound that bad. Overall, Steam is loved on PC. It is an excellent, convenient service, used by many.

Maybe MS are just the money grubbing, monopolizing corporate bullies they were made out to be. Maybe they just lacked vision in their efforts to effectively explain everything or maybe console players just aren't ready for change yet.

I can tell you this though - it is only a matter of time before always online technology is a requirement of all gaming systems. Whether it's the Xbox One or the PS5000, it will happen. The "victory" that took place when MS reversed it's policies, is only delaying the inevitable.

But technically, you shouldn't really have a say in how or when you resell your games, because in truth, you never really "owned" the game, you are licensing it - it was never really yours to sell. Now I know I will catch a bunch of shit for saying that, but it is what it is. You own the box it came in, the manual and the disk it's printed on, but the content on the disk isn't really yours.

Now if devs/pubs got a portion of the profit from your trade-in/resale, Much of the controversy over the practice would be eliminated, which why I don't see why companies don't just open up their own used game model - it could even be compete online, like ebay.

I also never saw a point to selling games. I buy games I know I will like, therefore, I never have a reason to ever sell them. The used game trade is a racket - a gimmicky racket. It's like a pawn shop tat only excepts certain items.

The signatures on this petition are all aliases of Don Mattrick- He prob hired a PR firm to get the petition started to try and salvage his reputation in the industry- I don t think it is possible though- he seems like a first class prick IMO

I, for one, think this is a pretty good idea. Back before MS revoked their policies, they were very excited for this, utilizing their DRM to create bigger and better things, with the cloud, Azure. Now that the restriction has been lifted, developers cannot tell whether or not someone has an internet connection, so they won't bother as much with the cloud in single-player campaigns. Bring back the cloud, Microsoft, and reintroduce your once revolutionary Xbox One.

The reason they pulled the 180 was the Family Share Plan. It was never meant to be what people believed it was. It caught on and uninformed employees fueled the hype flames and before they knew it they had created a feature they realized could never happen. Imagine every single-player game selling one copy for every 10 people. After the bigwigs and the publishers let out a collective "Oh Shit!" they were left with two options. Kill the share plan and keep the drm which would have killed that Boner faster than an unshaven 90 year old in a two peice, or kill both and save face. They made the only choice they had.
