Microsoft has a lot of work to do in the court of gamers' opinions when it comes to the Xbox One, which launches in November for $500. The company has flip-flopped with its controversial features that would have limited used game playback, eliminated game rentals and prevented gamers from playing games offline.

I wanted to argue against this point as a whole, but I really can't. However...

Fair enough, but will people be interested? Kinect is still largely considered an unfavorable gimmick and I've yet to see a game truly take advantage of the technology.

That, and the fact that Kinect is what's making the Xbox One the more expensive console, makes this more of a negative than a positive, imo. Like, seriously, have you seen the fuss that people have been raising over Kinect?

It states that the X1 is more powerful than the PS4 which it actually isn't.

It says because the X1 has TV it will dominate, I am sorry but I guess Rogers and Bell or Time Warner are in the gaming console race as well. You also need cable to watch TV.

To add they said SmartGlass is also a reason, this isn't true because I barely use it. I find it decent but it isn't really all that good

Exactly. It's a nice feature, but it doesn't carry enough weight or hype behind it in order to be deserving as a reason why the Xbox One might dominate the competition.

Halo 4 sold 8 million and Uncharted 3 sold over 6 million. We know theres gonna be an uncharted on PS4. Considering Xbox is the goto console for shooters Uncharteds sales are more impressive as no genre stands out more on PS4. The game is just better and so Halos numbers certainly doesn't mean the Xbox will dominate not one bit. Oh and Halo sold 8 million? Call of duty sold 13 million on 360 just to put that in perspective. Halo is NOT the dominant game on Xbox in fact its not even the dominant FPS or shooter game on the console.

Oh and did you know Halo 3 sold nearly 12 million copys? That's a drop of 4 million users. The series is degrading and fans are getting sick of it while stocks of series like Battlefield and other 3rd party games are on the rise.

The PS4 has at least one gigabyte of RAM going for it, more than likely two, a faster processor, and really most important of all several experienced 1st party development houses behind it. Meanwhile when MS possessed the technical advantage - twice - they squandered it to largely leave game development in 3rd party hands.

TV=Xbox can use voice control to switch. A man can press a button and switch inputs to his cable input faster than he can yell out to watch TV so he doesn't see the benefits. I will watch the Halo series via online streaming on PC :) The game itself could be good, not sure I want to buy an X1 to play it.

Kinect sold over 20million and that wasn't an incentive? The X1 will take a while until the console numbers will be over 20 million and how much do you want to spend making Kinect features on a low install base at the start that you don't know if it will be used or not? Just because it comes with a camera doesn't mean people want to use it or buy Kinect games.

Not sure about Titanfall yet, it looks like CoD with Mechs. If there is any FPS so far I'm interested in it's Destiny.

I find smartglass for gaming cumbersome when you are in the game like Dead Rising 3. If I'm surounded by Zombies I dont want to go and look for my smartphone or tablet, launch the app and call an air strike if that is something I could do a lot easier on the console itself. Having those devices unlocked in normal mode instead of standby uses a lot of the battery for a feature to use occasionally. Also Sony already also announced some smartphone/tablet connectivity and they also have Vita that you xould actually use as a substitute controller with a touchscreen.

As for TV, well I mainly watch streaming now via netflix or recorded programms on my TV box and I'm not so lazy that I can't press a button the remote. I dont even want to go into the details of having an extra device turned on with it's attached accessory draining electricity if I could do that just as well without turning those things on.

To be fair with the TV feature. I think the Kinect allows you to chat with your friends while watching TV. It doesn't mean shit to you, but for people who like sports, such as myself, I like this feature because it allows you to talk to your friends while watching the game, or even a TV show.

Is it really needed? I dont think so, but it's a nice thing to have to be honest.

Did you know the PS3 does this? I've had 'PlayTV' for about 5 years. It's just a tiny £30 box you plug your arial through to and there are no charges thereafter.

They brought it out before freeview was built into TVs and did an update that allows people to chat live during the TV show, with text overlaying the lefthand side of the TV picture.

It was quite fun for a while, but the regular users soon faded away and nobody uses it anymore, sadly. It was a neat idea though.

This will sound crazy but I have never played Halo so it won't sway me.
The Wii U has a nice little TV switching Feature but there's no built in cable box. TBH I just hit input and arrow up to game and then I switch back by hitting last. There is no lag and it takes a second.

Titanfall is good I liked it.

Kinect I always viewed that as whack and still do.

Smartshield hmn lets see when it comes to second screen implementation it'll be Nintendo in first place because the controller is built fom the ground up, The vita second because Sony has put the effort to into making it a viable option and the smart screen dead last because there are two devices that are not compatible from day one. A iphone 5 processor is different from a galaxy note II.

Oh yeah and the price point for me is a turnoff I am not made of money.

The article should have said 4 reason why Xbox1 isn't going to dominate and 1 reason why it will compete.
Most people have said they would rather the Kinect be left out and pay less. Smart glass(not a system selling feature, ms claims 17 million downloads compared to 75 million 360) and I doubt anybody went out and bought a 360 to use smart glass on, also isn't rated very high by the people who did download it. Tv features ( I predict people using these features a few times then going back to just pushing the 1 button on your remote that will take you back to your tv)
And finally games like halo, DR3, titan fall, gears, QB these will keep it competitive since games sell systems and if every one who bought halo 4 buys Xbox1 the first year it's out that's 8 million systems right there.
But Xbox1 will have to keep exclusive games coming and not just drop off after a few years to keep competing in the long run.
I think sony will beat ms again but not if all this love makes them arrogant in a few years like back in 05 after the ps2 success

If they couldn't beat the PS3 with a whole year headstart, lower price, such huge marketing campaign that built its popularity, they certainly don't have a chance this gen that they are both releasing at the same time and with the PS4 being the preferred console and the one developers using to showcase their games at games conferences, $100 cheaper than the XBone, so much more features and social integration, Gaikai, Remote Play with every single game on PSVita, etc.

In my opinion, all three consoles have a chance of "dominating", for very different reasons. Because of this, I actually will hold from making prophecies, and just wait to see how it all turns out.

To give a few examples:

- Wii U: lowest entry price of all three consoles ($300), with a possibility of a price drop right before the other two consoles launch, good indie support, and the strength of Nintendo's own IPs. Haters can hate all they want, but it's an absolute fact that Nintendo owns several IPs that sell consoles in amounts that neither Sony nor Microsoft can even begin to approach.

- Xbox One: the public perception around this console has changed dramatically since Microsoft took back their DRM and always online bullshit, also, the Xbox brand has been the biggest player in the U.S, and we also have to take into account Microsoft's tremendous growth in market share between the first Xbox and the 360. The first Xbox sold barely over 20 million consoles, Xbox 360 has sold to date around 75. That's quite a big growth in market presence, so who's to say that the One can't do another jump like that?

- PS4: Everyone knows about this one. Superb price for the hardware ($400), the promise of a fuckton of superb Sony games, as well as multiplatforms, good indie support. The PS3 has been the best balanced machine of this generation when it comes to exclusive and multiplatform games, and that alone made it the "winner" for the vast majority of gamers. It's reasonable to assume that the PS4 will follow a similar path, and that alone will make a lot of gamers quite happy to buy a PS4. Not to mention the fact that the PS3 has already reached (or surpassed, not quite sure) the 360 in worldwide sales, despite being released a full year later. And with its current sales, and Sony's support, it wouldn't surprise me if the PS3 ended catching up to the Wii in sales in a couple years, maybe even surpass it.

The way I see it, all three consoles have several factors that can benefit them in the market, for different reasons. And this is why I can't really bet on any of these three to be the clear "winner" of next generation, at least not where sales are concerned.

One thing I'm pretty sure about, though: In the end, all three consoles will do just fine. It's quite possibly for all three to reach damn good sales. Just look at this gen! 75-80 million PS3s sold to date, 75-80 million Xbox 360s sold to date, 100 million Wiis sold to date... those numbers are absolutely insane for all three.

So if you're a serious investor looking to CNNMoney for current info on next gen gaming, I think you are being played. This reads like talking points straight from Redmond. Halo is indeed a killer application. That was when the XBox--the original XBox--shipped 12 years ago. Halo is such a hot property they are giving Halo 3 away for free with XBox live.

Kinect has had a lukewarm reception in the marketplace and MS is gambling that it is because not enough developers were supporting and not because people largely want to sit down and not wave their hands around when they play games, as most gaming journalists keep trying to explain. You want to bet your money they are right?

MS has a "window" in which Titanfall is an exclusive. And then Sony will have it. Would you base a $500 purchase decision on a limited time exclusive? The integration with TV and the also-ran Smartglass tablets are two features that have proven themselves in no market to date and so kudos to MS for innovation but as investors you would rest easier if so many people weren't scratching their heads at these two oddities.

CNN doesn't mention the consumer and dealer goodwill MS burned through in trying to fundamentally change friendly trading and the used and rental markets. Does anyone not recall how Lucky Strike put themselves out of business with their “Reach for a Lucky Instead of a Sweet” campaign that so angered the dealers that sold their cigarettes that they effectively made it near impossible for anyone to buy their line again? Do you think Gamestop is going to forget what MS did when Mom and Grandmom start asking what system to buy?

If it is about games the E3 winner was Titanfall... When is that shipping on PS4? (I'm sure it will, but it is probably a one year timed exclusive).

When you talk about the exclusives games that have been confirmed to ship for holiday 2013 MS wins without a fight... PS4: Knack, Killzone, infamous, and Drive Club vs. X1: Deadrising 3, Ryse, Forza 5, Kinect Sports Rivals, and Killer Instinct.

I know Sony supposedly has more, but they announced games that will ship well into 2014. I have said this many times before. Unless a game has a guaranteed ship window in the current year, it doesn't count. Last Guardian, Alan Wake, Too Human, Killzone 2, were all examples of that last generation.

They still don't have a ship date for Last Guardian yet, I see it as a favorite of almost every Sony fan. It has been a reason to buy PS3 and now PS4 for over three years now... Talk about pulling the wool over gamers' eyes!

I can accept that the Xbox One may be a less valuable console to the person who only wants to game on it, but I think some people are being completely unfair and closed minded to what Xbox is trying to do. Having a connected experience is by no way a bad thing. A lot of people watch TV, maybe you don't, but most do. It's a fact. What is so bad about a connected experience where you can watch tv, get game invites, check your email, search online, rent movies, etc. all in one place? Sure, it may not be for you, but why is it bad? Can you really argue that having a more versatile console is a unfavorable product? And don't be so naive to think that just because Xbox can do other services and have invested heavily in other features that it somehow doesn't play games anymore. The PS4 is arguably a better gaming console, but accept the fact $400+ on anything is quite an investment and most consumers would like a device that has enough potential to justify their spending. The PS4 is crazy powerful and it too will have a certain potential for multimedia and connectivity, but just because Xbox is focusing on it doesn't make them any less of a gaming console.

I'm 27 years old, married, and with a 8month old daughter. I like to play games more than my wife, and we both like to watch movies and TV. We spend most of our time online browsing news, checking email and Facebook. To be able to have a device that connects my TV experience to my gaming/social experience is surely welcomed. And hopefully the voice recognition on the Kinect 2 is good enough to replace my remote control.

I love tech and each new console generation is equally as exciting for me. But it's disappointing to see how much pessimism has spread throughout these gamer discussions. It's an exciting time, why waste so much energy on negativity...

I think it's unfair to say the Xbox One is underpowered. It's not as powerful as the PS4, but to say it's underpowered suggests that the console is incapable of providing the same level of quality entertainment that the more powerful PS4 can. I think we're being nit-picky on the topic of console power. I think once (yes, I'm going there) cloud computing matures, I think the power difference between the two consoles will become more irrelevant. And I do believe both consoles will be using cloud computing to their advantage.

But I get it. Microsoft has said things to piss off a lot of people and they haven't done a lot to earn anyone's trust back or even further explain their vision and potential of the device. They need to start rethinking their PR.

Its funny how the worm turns. With the 360, Microsoft went to devs and asked what they wanted in a system. They said more memory and an easy to develop for system. Microsoft listened. With the 360, Microsoft went to gamers and had them help develop (arguably) the best controller to date, and included cross-game chat and other features games told them were important. They beat Sony on release date (almost a year earlier), price, and developer support. Then, in the 7 years since, they forgot what made the 360 such a hugely successful leap over the original xbox. Sony, however, looked back at what Microsoft did to gain such a huge chunk of market share on them....and did all of the same things this time. The one thing, however, that Microsoft did that will still carry them through the Xbox One era, is establish a brand that is huge in the us and proved that effective marketing can make a huge difference. If they get cable companies on board, think of the Comcast and Xfinity ads you see now...with Xbox One logos prominant in ever add. Or the rumored free Xbox One system with a 2-year triple play bundle subscription. It's going to be way more of a battle than most people think, just fought two different ways. But what if Microsoft would have never tried their DRM, always online, and used game BS, listened to devs, indies, and gamers, and matched the PS4's price?

It is all a matter of perception for instance you have gamers that no matter how horrible there system or systems of choice are doing they are always going to defend them. What is even worse is that most people fall blind or have deaf ears when it comes to which system sells the most if it is not there system of choice. I keep hearing PS3 has beat Xbox 360 but year in and and year out Sony shares sales of its PS3 with PS2. I also see comments like Vita is doing better then 3DS in games department because of awards when in reality gamers are saying otherwise. As gamers getting caught up with politics doesn't suit us. You can claim Sony adds PS2 sales with PS3 sales on a year by year basis, yet it's the PS3 lifetime sales that have passed Xbox 360 on a worldwide scale....not a year by year comparison. Trying to pretend a 13 year old system that has been discontinued is responsible for PS3's high sales figures this late in the PS3's life cycle is completely hysterical. Surely you can come up with a better excuse than that.

No one is saying Vita is "doing better than 3DS". The point of Vita games dominating the 2012 Best Portable GOTY awards as well as Vita winning this years GCA award for 2013 Best Portable Game of E3 is to prove the haters wrong who like to claim "Vita has no AAA must have quality games".

What will help the X1 sell more is the cable box feature. Microsoft already has deals with Time Warner and expanding to other cable companies. Some of you might say you don't want or need that. But if a cable company would offer a subscriber the choice of a plain regular cable box or a X1 cable box that plays video games, has a web browser, Netflix, and DVD/Blu Ray player that would make the X1 an easy choice. There are over 111 million cable subscribers in the world not including the people that steal cable. Plus a cable subscriber might want more X1s for each room.

Xbox One has got some nice features and they are doing different things so at least the PS4 and Xbox One won't be exactly the same. Win/Win for gamers!

Personally, this site has a lot going for it. Sure, fanboyism is rampant, but the shear volume of articles and new sites that you discover makes up for any biases you see. And besides, the articles and opinions posted can be legit. Example: MS policies concerning DRM and always online was immediately dislike here. And even if some people thought it wasn't such a big deal. The majority of gamers were strongly against such policies as some polls and the bad press indicated. The tide of which console was prefered was swinging strongly in PS4 favor. Fortunately, MS listen and removed some of those policies. Nice to know, your voice can still be heard today.

All we know for sure is the XBOX360 won this generation and the XBOX One will win the next generation. I think the biggest question, however, is how developers will utilize the PS4. If they actually develop for it instead of just port to it then part of the industry might swing in Sony's favor.
