PS4 Trounces Xbox One on 75,000 Votes in Console War Internet Poll

The internet has spoken: a web-based poll has gathered over 75,000 votes, and more than 75% of the participants have voted for the PS4, decreeing an overwhelming victory for Sony’s console. Of course the voting is still ongoing, so there’s still a chance for the Xbox One to regain ground.

It's crazy to see this much of a lopside. While people may be quick to say "it does not matter. The early adopters don't matter..." Um, actually, they do matter. The early trajectory of a console tends to hold true. Usually consoles at the very beginning sell roughly the same amount and then one console pulls ahead of the rest 6 months to a year later.

Overwhelming support at the beginning leads to situations like the PS1, the PS2, and to a lesser extent, the Wii.

What I am saying is this:

Historically, when consoles launch at the same time, they sell about the same amount UNTIL roughly 6 months to 1 year after launch. After that, one console pulls ahead.

This is not true 100% of the time of course. It is a generalization, which is why I said "usually".

So, the fact that it is already this lopsided BEFORE the consoles even launch is going to have a pretty big effect on the trajectory of these two consoles.

Xbox will do just fine. PS4 will sell more at start but Xbox will catch up. Both consoles are good and have plenty to offer, but xboxone has more to offer. Games plus all the other tv stuff and the kinekt will be more than a stupid moving game thing. The kinect inside had 2GB of ram for the camera its going todo great stuff. The game line of xbone its wayy better. Killzone its ok infamous its crap, The Order we know nothing about it only that will be a linear game. If you saw the video posted on N4G recently, where Game Informer went out and asked people what they thought about the new consoles, it mostly showed that the general public isn't paying much attention to these "wars" at all. Some thought MS was still supporting DRM though, so if enough people still think that it would explain the numbers not changing since the flip flop.

This was a slap in the face to all gamers and belies the entire companies posture towards us gamers.. They've been slowly but surely eroding what rapport they managed to build with us between the original XBOX and the 360. When you factor in the RROD fiasco and subsequent fallout, Disc Read/scratching, Omitting features only to charge exorbitant prices to add them, dwindling first party lineup, DRM, Always online, Forced Kinect, and package all of that with their Corporate Mouthpieces behaving very unprofessionally and arrogant well the results do seem to add up..

As a PS3 and 360 owner I must say that I have been opposed to Microsoft's position in the industry only because of the issue I listed..

They treat us like a commodity instead of individuals who have finite budgets and families that must make sacrifices to enjoy our medium... I don't feel sorry for them and will not buy their products ever again until there is some serious restructuring form an executive standpoint and their company ethos reflects more consumer friendly beliefs..

I've been posting that poll here for awhile in my comments, and the percentages have held pretty steady, though the One has gained almost 1% in that time.

If you click in the upper right corner you can get stats for each country, and if you click on the country you can get a further breakdown. The US percentages are shocking indeed.

But, it's just one poll and the number of votes is just a drop in the ocean. I think PS4 will definitely outsell the One, but I'll be really amazed if it does so by this kind of margin.

While 75000 people are a drop in the millions, it's definitely a statistically relevant pool. To give you a term of comparison "professional" market research is often done on pools that aren't over 40-50000 people, but normally much less than that. Even as low as 5000

@Abriel - That's just it, once you cross a certain threshold the number doesn't matter that much. What matters are the parameters of the poll. For example, what websites advertised this poll? Where was it discussed? Heck, you could get 5,000 votes from people coming directly from N4G and guess what's going to happen? The results will follow the same thing we see here every day. If they don't publish the parameters around the poll it's pretty much irrelevant...and that's true no matter which "side" ends up winning.

PS1 and PS2 outsold their competition by an even wider margin.

If PS4 sold 150 million like the PS2 (just for the sake of argument) and these margins held, the Xbox One would still sell about 45 million, which was far more than the original Xbox sold against PS2. That would be about 35 million less than the 360.

And that's not a stretch. The 360 gained more than 35 million compared to its predecessor by a wide margin. The Wii gained an even bigger margin. Losing a margin of 35 million is not without numerous historical precedents.

The only reason why these margins look crazy is because last gen was so even. Even the "sells out everywhere for years and years" Wii only sold about 20 million more than the competition.

But lopsided generations are - historically - quite common. The NES era, the PS1 era, the PS2 era, and every Nintendo handheld era except for DS vs PSP were very lopsided generations.

It really wouldn't be surprising - historically - if we have another lopsided generation.

Hold on, I indeed do own a Wii 360 and PS3 I do use my PS3 more than all. I pre ordered a PS4 not a X1. I got my PS3 first then I bought a 360 and wasted my 150$ on a Wii when it first came out. To be honest I know a few more people that own both and still prefer PS3. Online functionality isn't everything to some people. I don't defend the PS3 it speaks for it self when people know the facts about both. I defend my personal decision.

I have nothing against MS besides what I actually disagree with. I just think at this point MS has created alot of these "fanboys". I've been campaigning on PS4 since February to all my buddies, best mates, co workers, beginner gamers, and they have helped me by sending word of mouth to all the people they know that PS4 is the only option for next-gen. I've been waiting for the day SONY to become console king once again since the PS2 time.

Word of mouth and first impressions are what PS4 has had in its favor from the beginning. And Playstation has been riding that wave non stop.

Beginner gamers and friends rarely venture on to websites such as this to get up to date information on gaming. They mostly depend on a friend that they will ask advice from in the world of gaming. Much the same as you would from a friend that would be into cars.

Personally Im waiting till the end of the year to see comparisons. I cannot justify dropping $650 - $750 NZD on a pre-order.

Also another thing people are forgetting is that neither company have started a serious marketing campaign yet. It will be interesting to see the stats by the beginning of next year and how much of the casual market can get sold into next gen gaming.

i voted PS4 and i did it 4 times.Because,to be honest, the voting is very rig-able as it uses the same mechanism in the ign voting where the xbone got 5000 votes (more than half) from saudi arabia, a country that won't be even supported and where no pre-orders will take place.

its a twitter hack, when the message you're supposed to tweet is displayed, change anything in it and it will count your vote but won't prevent you from voting again.
