5 reasons the Playstation 4 will crush the competition

Sony has never looked better heading into a new generation of gaming. The Japanese company, which owns music, movie and TV networks, has focused solely on games thus far with its PlayStation 4 console. Sony has been able to win over important early adopters by doing the opposite of everything Microsoft did at E3, undercutting the Xbox One's price by $100 and allowing for game rentals, used game playback and offline play. Eventually, Microsoft was forced to change its policies after gamer backlash, but the damage has been done.

Sony still has the lead after Microsoft's Xbox One-80

MariaHelFutura3941d ago (Edited 3941d ago )

Microsoft has never outsold a Playstation platform and this generation won't be any different. Are people gonna start calling CNN Playstation fanboys? This gets better and better everyday.

I am sorry but I have seen that gif too many times so its getting kinda boring, I like Kaz and all but I mean come on, I have seen that one like 20 times of N4G

OT: I have to admit and so does every gamer no matter what console you support, the PS4 is a master console. From the controller to the power to the games I think that this console is an amazing system.

It may not crush the competition but it definitely has significant advantages over the competition which is why it should do very well

MariaHelFutura3941d ago (Edited 3941d ago )

It's all good, it's my favorite.

Edit- HOLD UP. JhawkFootball06 and his buddies are getting COD and X1. Disregard all media outlets, gamers, analysts, polls and preorders. JhawkFootball06 and his buddies got this.

JhawkFootball063941d ago

Crush the competition? Please.

Me and my buddies can't wait to get Call of Duty Ghosts and kill it on the Xbox One.

Godmars2903941d ago

@JhawkFootball06:

And I'm waiting for something that's not COD. A Star fox clone or the rebirth of the JRPG. Something that doesn't have to be a mega-hit but can still be popular.

claudionmc3941d ago

@JhawkFootball06

You and your friends... how many millions of friends do you have?

I don't know if PS4 is going to "crush" the competition, but I expect a sales ratio of about 3:1, which will be awful for M$

SIRHC133941d ago

How any gen of PS/Xbox have we seen? Two?

We simply don't know how this could turn out. PS2 won by an extremely large margin, 360 led most of this gen until recent, and as for next - it's anyone's game.

But I do think PS4 will have the edge this year(Price, Price, Price). But with Halo 5 next year(and assuming it'll impress), I'm anticipating a much closer race next year.

WrAiTh Sp3cTr33941d ago

Are they gonna do it by 3rd party games? Thats the majority of what I've saw from them.

abzdine3941d ago

after EDGE, now CNN!
competition is definitely over!

nick3093941d ago

Ms & sony almost sold the same amount of consoles& im pretty sure ms earned alot more than sony because of gold memberships as sony only introduced plus a while later.

YNWA963941d ago

The reason why 360 was so successful is because people actually buy mostly new games, that why its developers choice... You other people champion Sony, but be nice and buy games.... Brand new.... Go on... Make a lifestyle change....

Concertoine3941d ago

keep in mind the 360 hasn't been sold in japan for years now. the fact that it took the ps3 damn near 6 years to catch up to the 360, when the 360 wasn't even selling to the largest gaming demographic in the world is an admirable feat.

MysticStrummer3941d ago

lol So many visitors from alternate universes, or maybe they're all from the same one, where there was no piracy on 360, Japan is the biggest gaming market, and one guy and his buddies can determine how well a console sells worldwide.

Strange times are these, my friends.

YNWA963941d ago

Mysticstrummer... I guess godzilla exists in your reality... Japan a huge market.... Its dead software wise... Even the japanese admit that...

C-Thunder3941d ago

Gman, I think you missed something...

YNWA963941d ago

Sorry, mechazilla.... Forgot him....there goes my bubble... Even though I have owned all 3 PS, preordered the 4, also X1, I like games on both ya know, like the features on X1, skype, I live far from all my family, but N4G has Sony positive only policy, so I must denounce MS....

SilentNegotiator3941d ago (Edited 3941d ago )

Didn't CNN call PS3 a "sinking ship" when it was selling at (near) its height?

It's weird seeing all of the Playstation doubters become Playstation pushers before Ps4 is even released.

I'm a bit stunned that even CNN is reporting stuff like this

"Bu bu but only the forum warriors know the differences. The general public will buy it because it's Xbox"

Yeah, I heard that exact same excuse 7 years ago for the PS3 and look what happened.

What people are so quick to forget is that Sony dominated two console generations in a row, did okay for themselves on the third gen, and they also made the most inroads into Nintendo's handheld market (PSP sold over 80 million units, the highest-selling non-Nintendo handheld by a gigantic margin)

It is not fanboyish to think that Sony might dominate again. Is it guaranteed? No, of course not, but Sony is a safe bet. They have a track record of dominating and even when they stumble (the first 3 years of PS3) they still manage to do pretty well.

On the flip side, Microsoft and Nintendo are the gambles. Nintendo has dominated before, but they've also been last place before. It could go both ways with Wii-U. Microsoft was a distant second in the PS2 gen and a very, very close third last gen, and while I won't deny they made EXCELLENT strides forward with the 360, there's no guarantee they'll repeat it, especially not with all the obstacles facing the Xbox One.

MikeMyers3941d ago

You will always have your loyalists. It's the two, three years after launch that matters. The loyalists bought the Playstation Vita and now look. Same with the Wii U. That group can only carry a system for so long. Sony lost a big chunk of its built up fanbase from the PS1 and PS2. They could get it back. Or perhaps $399 is still too expensive and so will be $499 for the Xbox One. We don't know.

What I will say is Microsoft is not going to lay down easily if Xbox One sales are flat. They have the money to make sure the Xbox One is a success and all these partnerships with cable providers is not chump change. They have also invested billions into cloud technology, Skype and even creating more game studios. You are talking hundreds of billions of dollars in assets. Sony and Nintendo pale in comparison to the investments they can and have made.

dedicatedtogamers3941d ago (Edited 3941d ago )

@ MikeMyers

Some very good points, so I'll address them one at a time.

"Sony lost a big chunk of its built up fanbase from the PS1 and PS2. They could get it back. "

Absolutely. If anything, Sony's loss of fanbase to the Wii and 360 last gen shows that there are console loyalists, and then there is a very large amorphous blob of consumers who simply go with the flow and don't necessarily stick with a particular brand. This next gen will show us how loyal the respective fanbases on Wii, 360, and PS3 really are.

"Microsoft is not going to lay down easily if Xbox One sales are flat."

But what will Microsoft's response be? I agree. They won't lay down and die. But in response, will they amp up the games? History says "no". In light of all the changes over the past several years and the drastic changes occurring within MS right now, it seems more likely that Microsoft's response to poor sales would be to either push the TvTvSports (into which they've invested $400 million in the NFL alone) or to drop the brand altogether, neither of which would be happy solutions for Xbox fans.

"They have the money to make sure the Xbox One is a success"

Having money and using money are two different things. And again, will the money be used for games, or will it be used for the cable provider partnerships that you talked about?

"They have also invested billions into... creating more game studios."

I cut the quote because I wanted to talk about this, specifically. These studios are new and unproven. Will they make terrible games? Hard to say. Will they make fantastic games? Hard to say, but it would be a foolish bet to assume they'll all make fantastic games. It would be a realistic - albeit cynical - bet to assume these brand-new studios will make average games. Microsoft once owned veteran, time-proven studios with enormous talent, but they closed those studios. Now, realizing that 3rd party exclusives have died away, MS has scrambled over the last 2 1/2 years to create some studios to compensate. Time will tell if this was a good plan, but it seems reasonable to be cautiously optimistic (at best) of what these studios might make.

"You are talking hundreds of billions of dollars in assets. Sony and Nintendo pale in comparison to the investments they can and have made."

It's not 100s of billions, considering Microsoft's total worth is less than 300 billion, but yes, they've made investments. They've made even more investments into multimedia, Office, and Windows, and those overshadow the Xbox division. What, you think all 100s of those billions will go to gaming? Microsoft's Xbox division has - at absolute best - broke even over the last decade, though it would be more realistic to say that it has bled a not-insignificant amount of money. I do not share anyone's optimism that Microsoft will use their dwindling wealth to enrich gaming in a time when their real, core, money-making divisions (Office, OS, etc) are being encroached upon.

MikeMyers3941d ago

The Xbox One is an important piece to MS future plans and that is to tie Windows into all of their devices. Finally they will have Smartglass and Windows all integrated into various Window platforms, including the Xbox One. They did a terrible job last generation on the PC front and getting Windows into the Xbox.

Microsoft will also spends hundreds of millions of dollars into advertising. That is where they will once again trump both Nintendo and Sony. They can also afford a price cut early on unlike Nintendo and Sony if sales are sluggish.

TV also reaches out to more potential customers than games do. This is why Google, Apple and now Microsoft are all trying to get those suppliers to support their devices. The Xbox One also has an HDMI input.

RedHawkX3941d ago

yep playstation 4 is gonna destroy the xbox one so if you guys want to play online with the most popular console that everyone is playing then get the ps4. if you want the console where no one is playing online and no headset to talk online then get the xbox one

Virus2013941d ago

You act like people won't have $15 to buy an X1 headset. Also the Kinect can be used for voice chat, and it does a good job at cancelling out background noise.

chrismichaels043941d ago

Congratulations to Sony for their continuing early success with the PS4. Even after MS dropped the DRM nonsense, gamers are still preferring the PS4 over Xbox one. Its not politics....it's just common sense. PS4 is a more gamer friendly console. Thats not a knock on Xbox, it's just reality.

Sony better be on alert though. As in the past, the xbox is bound to, ahem, "explode" sooner or later next generation.

Parapraxis3941d ago

A lot of the 360's success was herd mentality.
They got out of the gates with the 360 way earlier then PS3.

Faulty hardware aside, It was effective.
Many people picked up the 360 to get into that gen of gaming, for many it was better than waiting for the PS3 to come out, it was less expensive, and by the time PS3 finally launched had a better line-up of games.

So what did people who's friends had 360's do? They also bought 360's.
MS had a huge head start and good momentum by the time the PS3 rolled out.

This is not the case this time.
The PS3 is cheaper, and releasing around the same time, so for a lot of people it comes down to one major factor, how many friends are buying the same console, and unlike the early 360 days where there was only one option, this time Sony has put forth a console that is really hard to deny is a better choice.

sentury1113941d ago

If releasing a year early is the primary reason for success then the Dreamcast wouldn't have killed Sega.

And if you look at sales excluding Japan MS sold around 10 million more than Sony. MS had around a 6 million lead by the time PS3 launched.

With 1 market not available and removing the Japanese market for both consoles the 360 sold better worldwide taking numbers from both consoles from 2006 onward.

Basically MS risked a lot by releasing early since the track record of consoles that have aren't great. The lead wasn't huge when PS3 launched and Sony had a huge fanbase that they lost transitioning to next gen.

Software sales are also much better on Xbox than PlayStation, but that's another story.

Bathyj3941d ago

Sega was a company circling the toilet even before the dreamcast. they were losing huge amounts of money year after year and we're never really a force from the 32x onwards. dreamcast was just they're last chance, and it failed because everyone was pretty much waiting for the follow up to the console that had changed gaming forever, the PlayStation one.

launching first doesn't guarantee victory for every console in history, but it's the ONLY reason Microsoft enjoyed its lead for so long this gen. and that's not even speculation. Ps3 sold more every year it was out except one. Had they launched the same day Xbox 360 would have always been behind. you can't claim to be a quicker runner cos you're 10 paces in front but you started a year earlier.

and why would you exclude Japan to prove Xbox sold more? I don't get it. did they fail a drug test and are now stricken from the records. why not exclude all of Asia. and Australia and New zealand. why not just count USA twice if it helps?

sentury1113941d ago

@bathyj If people were just waiting for the PS2 because the PS1 was so successful then wouldn't they wait for the PS3 because that was even more successful?

I'm just saying that if you exclude Japan since PS3 sold 10+ million more than xbox there, because it really shouldn't count as a market for the xbox. Though they did try and sell it they might as well not have. You would see that around the rest of the world the xbox would be ahead by around that same amount they lost in Japan. If you remove all of Asia, then the xbox would be even farther ahead.

Taking out the 1 year advantage you would see that the xbox would still be leading. Yes it did help move some sales after that year, but it also had to compete with the largest install base for consoles in the PS2. By your logic most people would wait for the PS3 like they did for the PS2.

Clearly people liked the xbox because it kept selling.

Also how do you explain the software attach rates? Because a lot of sales for the PS3 were due to bluray and the PS3 was the best player with gaming potential available at that time. Those people didn't buy games. Even today the numbers for software favor the xbox. That might have something to do with PS+ costing developers money.

Either way, people discounting that the xbox won the sales by default is unfair. They kept selling and like I said, they would have outsold the PS3 every year worldwide if you exclude Japan.

PS3 only won those years because they had a market that xbox couldn't sell in. They tried and nothing happened, so they stopped putting in all the effort.

Name other major markets where PS3 has the advantage.

C-Thunder3941d ago

You know what sold a lot of 360s?

RROD

Either a second console to alternate when ones getting fixed or a replacement out of warranty, guaranteed.

sentury1113941d ago

RROD was old news by 2008 and the xbox had 3 years of warranty. Mine was replaced because it stopped reading discs after 2+ years, claimed RROD and got it replaced for free. Lasted till I bought a new slim.

What about the YLOD? That wasn't fixed for free by Sony. I doubt a lot of people were so impatient that they bought a second console because they couldn't wait 2 weeks for theirs to be returned.

RedHawkX3941d ago

it will exlode and catch on fire it will be called the xbox one red ring of death lol. the xbox one ship is going down and some of its fanboys crew is going down with the ship even the the captain don mattrick bailed out ages ago lol. just shows you how mindless and stupid xbox one fanboys are. they just cant seem to ever be smart and do the right thing.

ps4 domination baby!

Kevlar0093941d ago

Most gamers seem to love it, even if you are an Xbox fan it's hard to deny the PS4 is a good gaming system. In the entertainment/electronic industry popular products tend to catch on like fire, if initial launch reactions to PS4 are good then there is the chance it will catch on to the rest of potential consumers

Parapraxis3941d ago

Agreed.
The positive momentum for the PS4 is going to be hard to slow down.

sentury1113941d ago

Except the Xbone has more potential to attract the casual crowd.

If those features turn out to be great expect sales to pick up for Xbox. PlayStation doesn't have the integration of entertainment built in like the Xbox does so that could be a huge boon.

Though like the PS3 with bluray it could hurt attach rates.

Narutone663941d ago

I don't think a gaming console that is $100 more than the competition is going to attract the casual crowd. The ones who spent more for a gaming console are the hardcore gaming crowd.

sentury1113941d ago

@Narutone That didn't stop movie fans from buying PS3 for BluRay and that was $100-300 more (if we include the arcade).

A lot of people buy Ipads even though you can get an android device for half the cost because they like the software it features.

$500 for something that can do everything and will last for 5+ years is cheap when people spend $200+ every other year on a smartphone. Or more on a tablet.

I'm just saying that the xbox has more potential to draw the casual crowd. Whether you like it or not, it has Kinect, Video in for TV integration and better multitasking capabilities.

General consumers aren't looking for just a gaming device. They want more from their hardware. With xbox they can throw out their media streaming and bluray device and use just the xbox.

tiffac0083941d ago

We keep forgetting that Microsoft is only targeting the casual crowds on certain countries because those TV features will only work depending on the services per region.

It is not a universal strategy that we all would like it to be.

I'm not big into sim racing, but I got sucked into the hype for this one from magazines back then. I just played arcade mode and that was enough for me to feel like I got my money's worth.

Yeah, it's definitely worth playing today. GT 2 has a few interesting fan made graphical mods when played on an emulator as well.

PrimeVinister8d ago

The arcade mode is underrated, it's a great alternative mode and you can even unlock GT HiFi with it.

Fonsecap8d ago

Cars back then had much more personality then those we see today. Modern cars all about the led lights and the tablet size screens and they all seem alike, back then they could be simpler in design but had tons more personality.

PrimeVinister8d ago

That is something a few people have pointed out - that cars all look the same now. I have to agree that a lot of new vehicles lack personality.

fsfsxii8d ago

You guys are so anti-fun its depressing, like who tf cares about personality of objects like wtf? Just learn to enjoy stuff as is.

PrimeVinister8d ago

It's hardly anti-fun to remark that some objects look nicer than others.

And everyone has their favourite era of cars, I sincerely doubt many will pick the 2020s a few decades from now.

Fonsecap8d ago

Dude, like wft cares about personality of objects? What about art? Paintings are objects and they're considered good or bad if they show or lack personality so I ask, wtf are you talking about? Cars are also considered pieces of art, vintage cars, classic cars, classic bikes and so on. Artists are appreciated by the objects they craft, blacksmiths, painters, engineers, designers, so wtf cares about personality of objects indeed... ( Sorry for my English, it's not my native language)

MrBaskerville7d ago

Talking about cars is fun if you are a car enthusiast. Just saying.

ApocalypseShadow8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

That Corvette Stingray to this day is one of the most ferocious whips ever driven. Overpowered against other cars yes. But to drive it and be that close to losing control, but being in command around those curves, just can't be duplicated.

HiFi mode is also something I miss. There should be a mode in today's GT where it's Mano o Mano and the detail and resolution jump full throttle. In today's games, Max Ray Tracing and lighting and textures to make it look even more real..

PrimeVinister8d ago

A modern HiFi mode would be really cool! It would be really interesting to see how real they could go by stripping it all way back.

And Stingray is a solid choice 👌

TiredGamer8d ago

HiFi mode in GT1 was only a stripped down 60 fps mode for one track. Should have been called "Performance Mode" or "High Frame Rate" mode.

PrimeVinister8d ago

@TiredGamer it was only three tracks, but it was still cool

Disruptor PS1, a pre Goldeneye console FPS from 1996 (with Command and Conquer type FMV cutscenes) and the first game by a pre Spyro Insomniac Studios directed by Mark Cerny. A good game for its time, and pre Bioshock use of telekinesis type powers. A game sadly almost completely lost to time

@Cacabunga Yeah, I preferred II for the real-timier combat. I would love to see both remade or remastered.

on_line_forever11d ago

We need to bring back the golden era of ps1 & ps2 .
We need to see quality games developed with alot of passion to make gamers satisfied .
We need to benefit from new AI technology to bring something new to games something like " nemesis systems " that used in shadow of morder and upgrade it to next level

PrimeVinister11d ago

The economics of games has changed a lot since the PS1 and PS2. As much as I would love a return to those days, it's not not at all likely.
