This is what 'Need For Speed' and open-world games can look like in CryEngine 3

DSOGaming writes: "The highlights of this week are the racing shots from Synce and wjmoosting and the spectacular shots from Jeke. Synce’s and wjmoosting’s works give us a glimpse of what a Need For Speed game would look like in CryEngine 3, while Jeke’s map shows off CryEngine 3′s “open world” capabilities. Now imagine an Elder Scrolls powered by Crytek’s engine. Now that would look awesome. Enjoy!"

That's the problem with cry engine. All I seen is graphical power(which is impressive) but no one taking advantage of it to make a decent game. Until a decent game comes, they is a showcase more than anything. There is so much this engine could do but apparently no good games for it yet. This is a positive step but I'm more looking for finished products with engine to reconsider it.

You also have to remember that in order to make a RPG that looks like this would require a lot of time, like 3-4 years, maybe more depending on how big it is. And that requires you to pay a lot of people for a very long time, Therefore their profit margin gets smaller the longer it is in development, so unless it sells like a COD game, they will not be making enough money for it to be worth all that time. Reason why developers try to develop a game within 1-2 years when actually starting on the development of that game.
But man, wouldnt it be amazing to have an open-world look like this :) mmmm

have you seen the cryengine soft-body physics? it looks impressive http://www.youtube.com/watc... and imo I think next gen we are gonna see more CE3 games since the engine ran like s*** on the current gen consoles.

I'm wondering what performance would be when traveling at 200+ km/h. Driving a jeep and driving a sports car are two different things when it comes to loading assets.

The environments are impressive. The car models need work.

I think many of those are just landscape scenes... doesn't mean Need for Speed would look anything like that. The car models themselves didn't look as detailed as other next gen racers. Plus EA has said that Frostbite will be the engine for N4S.

why do alot of devs use other engines instead of this one ?

MidnytRain3949d ago

According to this article, the licensing fee of the CryEngine 3 alone costs 1.2 million dollars.

woa , well if they wanted more people to use it they should consider lowering that ! were in a time where we devs trying to save as much money and be efficient

They'd rather keep their exclusivity and avoid complications. Besides this engine is only amazing visually.

FPS style games suit well with engine, graphically for the most part, physics currently are not the strong part of this engine IMO, but NFS : The Run suffered from bad side effects that came with the engine, which are long loading times, badly optimized for speed it had to process environment, was forced to reduce graphical settings.

For example Crysis series, looks amazing, plays like just another FPS game, or worse, the physics don't feel very smooth and realistic.

TheMrMalro3949d ago

Main question is, will it have a story and customization? :P

kB03949d ago

Although environments are very detailed, the cars themselves don't look as good as actual racing games:p.

There is also something about the Crysis engine that just...makes it feel a little off...even with some ppl comparing it to photorealism.

I still think Crysis 1 engine was still a bit more closer to life...it just felt simple:P this is very saturated and bloomed.

Either way I'd never complaint if a game used the engine:D

Gamingisfornerds3949d ago

Can't say I'm overly impressed...not at all actually.

Ill see your Ditto and raise you a double ditto

I imagine crouching behind the tombstone, readying my bow and arrow while waiting for an unsuspecting victim to walk out of that crap shack. That DOF creates such a sense of realism.
