There's still plenty of reason to be worried about Square Enix, despite their recent reveal of Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III.

I do know there are different RPG sub-genres and all but that doesn't mean a few RPG elements make any game a RPG.

Practically every game is an RPG if you consider the fact that you almost always assume a ROLE and PLAY a GAME. You need to add more letters or adjectives to the acronym in order to prevent Mario, Call of Duty, and Assassin's Creed from falling under its reach.

Not really. When most people think of an RPG they expect some kind tactical battle system where you need to plan your actions ahead of the enemies, use buffs and such, or better yet a turn based battle system. Lost Odyssey already proved the old system still works perfectly well.

FF-XV looks like a straight up action game to me, with some light RPG elements just like Kingdom Hearts was. Nothing wrong with that I suppose but it's just a shame to see Final Fantasy completely turning away from what had drawn so many gamers to it to begin with, simply to gain mass appeal... I suppose that's just the way the industry is right now.

Here we go. Ontological arguments on what it means to "be" an RPG carried angrily by whiny fanboys (or, not be, because the negative side of it is the most fun to scream about). You guys know that buffs, experience points, elemental attacks, and HP were all in Borderlands, right? I want a *traditional Japanese turn-based RPG* just as much as any of you, but I'm not going to sit here and complain that an E3 video of an upcoming game for an unreleased console isn't an RPG in the broadest sense. Nearly every new game out there co-opted the traditional RPG in some way. Jesus Jones.

Look, if you haven't played FF7: Crisis Core on PSP yet, go do that. That was a Final Fantasy game with action elements, real-time menu options for which weapons, skills, and magic to use, and it was great. Was it repetitive and grindy and really silly by the time you were dealing 99999 damage? Absolutely. But it was fun. It was way better than anything else past Final Fantasy X, that's for sure. The right guys are designing this particular game, so sit back, relax, and let's see what this is all about once it's playable. If it sucks, then they're the wrong guys, and we can lambaste their next attempt at a game.

The amount of insanity I'm seeing these comments are ridiculous. You are totally right colonel179 everyone was excited for Versus 13 and now that they change the name people are complaining for no real reason.

They think changing the name to XV is somehow going to effect all FF games in the future when they have no proof of that whatsoever. Honestly the more I think about it the angrier I get. People have been waiting for this game for years, for awhile we thought it was cancelled and were saddened. Now we know it still exist and is definitely coming out in the not so far future and people are complaining about a damn name change.

No what is wrong with gamers is how easy it is for them to make generalizations and their arrogance telling people how they should feel or what they can say regarding one game. You see 20 people on the internet excited for one game and that means that everyone is excited for that game or likes the direction devs/publishers are taking that game? What are we? Also this is a website where we discuss games and everyone will have different different opinons and just like some people are entitled to be excited for any game and voice their opinion, there are also people that are entitled to not feel excited for that same game and voice their opinion without having arrogant pricks telling them what they can or cannot say. I don't understand these complaints either. If you were excited for Versus XIII for all of theses years, there's no reason to hate on its current status - at all.

This is the same game Versus XIII was - now with better hardware for Nomura to fully realise his vision. It was always meant to be a "spin off". I don't mean that in derogatory terms, I mean that it was part of the XIII universe (sadly) but wasn't a traditional FF game.

I have no issue with it being multiplatform either. I WAS concerned that the 360 would hold it back, but now I can see that even the PS3 would've held it back. It still looks like the most promising FF game in years in terms of scope, characters and story. The gameplay will still be great (in fact, more ambitious).

I'm just worried since SE said FFXV already has sequels planned. I don't want them to make only FFXV games next-gen like they did with FFXIII this gen.

the combat looked a bit..err..messy though, hopefully it plays better once they finish it.

It was such a loss when Square broke up, here's hoping Monolith Soft (former Squaresoft members) & SE make a game together sometime in the future.

That's if this game turns into a complete mess though, they really need to redeem themselves imo.
I expect if KH3 & FFXV aren't great games then Square will be officially dead, I doubt they'd be able to survive 2 failed gen's in a row.

Just because a game is an action RPG, and not turn based, doesn't mean its NOT an RPG. Kingdom Hearts, Elder Scrolls, Dragon's Dogma, all great action RPG's.

Don't most of us end up running from 90% of battles just over halfway through a game because they've become tedious? Personally I haven't liked any combat system since FF9 and FF12. FF10 and 13/13-2 had terrible combat in my eyes. Kingdom Hearts games have been great, and I for one am looking forward to this more than any other Square Enix title in a long time.

You forgot to add deus ex, demon souls, mass effect, Diablo, the tales series(for the most part) and the witcher. All great game series and great RPGs.

I for one can't wait for FFXV (been waiting for a long long time) but to think the game will be any less of an RPG or less of a FF game because its an ARPG sounds a bit ridiclous. Sure it might not be "traditional" but I have the feeling the game will be EPIC. God knows they've spent enough time on it lol.

Final Fantasy franchise is pretty much dead for me. I understand how some people like the way it's handled now, after all, God of War sells like hell.

In my honest opinion, anyone interested in playing JRPGs should just forget about SE and follow NIS, Tri-Ace, CH, IP, Gungho, XSeeD, etc. There are many japanese developers who still follow the basics of what it takes to make a JRPG in their games, unlike SE, who's aiming for a broader audience with lots of people who just want to sit on their couch and press buttons and watch some pretty cut scenes. I'll be surprised if FFXV takes more than 12 hours to be finished. Well, maybe it might take 15 hours since they could just add 3 hours of cut scenes and dialogues.

So long if it's keeping my interest (and it is), then I couldn't careless about the pokemon-based... oh sorry, Turn-based stuff. Besides, they already stated that it was going to be similar to kingdom hearts-like gameplay since the beginning.
