Microsoft Reveals How It’s Improving Visual Detail On Xbox One And Windows 8.1

Microsoft revealed a new feature for DirectX 11.2 and Windows 8.1 today called “tiled resources” that enables a graphics card to display a huge amount of detail without overwhelming it with memory-intensive textures.

Watched this live. Watching the developers build right now as well. That's crazy it's able to greatly reduce memory needs/use by performing better textures most devs would not even attempt due to the hit to other resources.

Got to correct some info though...

"Windows 8.1 and next-gen consoles"

^^That's not true this feature is only on 8.1 windows and Xbox One.
I know this statement could be a PC world generalization for console vs PC

Crossing my finger on the reveal of the XB1 spec details at BUILD in the next few days but knowing MSFT Sony bumping up their specs to match XB1(RAM) will cause MSFT to wait until it's too late for Sony to match. Rumor has it MSFT might have issued an NDA on the specs because of the first leak resulting in a PS4 spec bump.

Anyways this DirectX 11.2 tech will allow some new gameplay methods in games(games like watchdogs where you find clues like track marks on junkies :P

XB1 games speak for themselves but this is added greatness.

Blankolf3946d ago (Edited 3946d ago )

Greatness... Greatness is in PS4 my good sir, and you would be a fool to deny it...

I no kid.

andibandit3946d ago

What a great reply, really giving your thoughts about the new feature, and not an attempt to drag the ps4 into the discussion, no sir!.

O.t.
The new feature sounds promising, but i want to see it before I believe it.

hazardman3946d ago

Greatness is having them both..o yeah!

greenpowerz3946d ago (Edited 3946d ago )

Come on man

XB1 is the only console able to play games and video in 4K(4K games). This right here is very telling

Why do you think gamers were hating on XB1 games trying to paint one example of an exclusive Arcade game and a multi plat running on a PC as every XB1 game at E3 doing the same?

There are people still trying to smear and spread misinformation, hell even the media that talked so much smack! I thought they were Right wing Mitt Romney supporters from FOX NEWS, finally tell the truth with an skeptical tone at the same time when they know better.
http://www.forzacentral.com...

Adam Sessler basically admitting the game media and himself acted like fools being baited into haters agenda at E3.

Xbox was impressive at E3 and Sony and supporters needed that stunt during Sony's presser.

XB1 is impressive on the local side of the hardware and unmatched with cloud and other features like "tiled resources"

Developers simply say Xbox One is a "POWERFUL CONSOLE" not to start fanboy wars.

EA
" "Microsoft has shown some very killer [Xbox One] capabilities that we've known about for a while, and we're able to demonstrate."
http://www.examiner.com/art...

^^EA is sure not talking about Kinect etc as the article suggests lol that's a given.

Most games in 1080p@60fps

That one major multi plat on PC I mentioned above is BF4 on Xb1 kit.

"“[The reveal] was specced to Xbox One, as we said,” replied Moore. “I opened the show by saying, ‘Everything you see today is new code for Xbox One and PlayStation 4’. Battlefield 4, 64-player, I was playing myself, I had the controller in my hands, no different.

But then: “We’re all on dev kits, Geoff, as you know. I mean there’s no final hardware yet and there’s not going to be for a long time, but the spec of what we were playing on is next-gen spec.”"

So this shows you how impressive the hardware is in XB1 resulting in impressive games driving haters so crazy they would try to use low level graphics from an arcade game to try and discredit the Xbox capabilities.

By the way the XB1 is dam Sexy and not nearly as big in life as it seems in photos in a vacuum.

inf3cted13946d ago

Oh look a N4G common fanboy.

Blankolf3946d ago (Edited 3946d ago )

Jesus good sirs It was a joke, the hostility between gamers need to decrease <.<

Indeed Inf3cted1, these fanboys keep defending N4G and criticising other gaming news websites as ign or gamespot, I believe everyone needs to respect one another when posting their responses.

Some of you guys sure do fall for obvious trolls easily.

EVILDEAD3603945d ago

Wow.

Looks like this could be really cool when executed in games.

Will be interesting to see how devs utilize it.

darthv723945d ago

that the specs of both the ps4 and xb1 are similar (not the same) wouldnt it be safe to assume that the hardware within the ps4 is also capable of using this new feature?

I can see if this is a programming technique to DX 11.2 but the gpu is the one doing the work the software tells it to. since both are using a similar AMD based gpu then that feature would apply to both platforms regardless of the OS that each one uses.

If the PS4 is compatible with DX 11.2 then that tile resource feature would also be compatible. This new thing should not be pulled into the middle of a console battle because it is designed to benefit people who play game that make use of it. That means Pc and console gamers will benefit if the developers put it to use.

mewhy323941d ago

Microsoft is clearly trying to make up the deficientcy of the xbox compare to the PS4 with some software trickery.

Keweellll. DX11 is coveted tech, and this is why. Backed by greater minds than ours, I'm expecting some amazing stuff from MS in the coming generation.

AngelicIceDiamond3946d ago

Whatever helps X1 games shine is a plus for MS and gamers.

YNWA963946d ago

Spot the idiot fanboy contest alert, thanks Blankolf for being an example, much appreciated.

3-4-53946d ago

I have windows 8 on my PC. It runs awesome and is great. I just don't use all the other crap that comes with it or it was used for.

You just click on the "Desktop" option and it stays in that mode, like Windows 7.

Only thing bad is not being able to play some old PC games, which kind of sucks, but for future games Windows 8 will run them more efficiently.

Kingnichendrix3946d ago

I know right i keep having problems with gta4 as well and that stupid metro app thing eughhh god damn

Autodidactdystopia3946d ago

I will never switch to windows 8.

maybe 9 or what they are calling windows Blue

But screw 8 its crippled

Jamaicangmr3946d ago

"Rumor has it MSFT might have issued an NDA on the specs because of the first leak resulting in a PS4 spec bump."

What are you talking about and where have u heard this supposed rumor? Did you know the PS4 specs before they were confirmed? Please present a credible source of a last minute bump. Stop spreading propaganda are you being paid or something?

You are starting act suspiciously like one of those paid trolls i read about on here.

This is good new for all but why the stealth trolling?

Just looking at ur post history.

I got my eye on you.

Gameratheart3946d ago

Tiled resources..... The power of the cloud.... Man the x1 is amazing!!!! Remember how much more powerful the sega genesis was over the snes? Sega had the cutting edge "blast processing" that the snes didn't have..... The x1 has its own "blast processing" now.... I am blown away! This is so awesome!!!......l .............. O ..............l

IRetrouk3946d ago (Edited 3946d ago )

I cant believe you still think there is gonna be a spec boost from the one, final hardware is done, there is no magic juice, its not as powerfull as ps4 but so what? Your obviously buying it so just enjoy it. Oh and wheres this 4kgame you are on about??? Info would be good.

DoesUs3946d ago

This really is nothing new and the same thing is used elsewhere? Can't believe what certain individuals are coming up with here! It's pure laugh out loud hilarious! Also, for the last time...MS ARE NOT CHANGING SPECS! THEY ARE WHAT THEY ARE WHICH ARE INFERIOR TO PS4.

bicfitness3946d ago

This is a standard feature of the GCN architecture on the APUs or most modern graphics cards. Sony's APU has the same feature it's just not accessed via Direct X. My God, you are embarrassing.

Mkai283946d ago

Yeah minimizing 3GBs of data to 16 MBs is insane!

WolfOfDarkness3946d ago (Edited 3946d ago )

Okay , let me clear some facts :

1- I am going to get both consoles " PS4 & Xbox 1 ".

2- I don't know much in Tech staff in details .

Fact is this , PS4 is more powerful than Xbox1 , and I learned that from Game develops who worked on both Consoles .

No matter what are you trying to prove , there is A noticeable difference in term of graphics between the two consoles .

Only the game developers know about the two consoles , because they are working on them.

If you are going to buy COD: ghosts in both next gen Consoles " you WILL see the deference , PS4 is little better in graphics and number of the objects seen on the screen " developer said .

Just Waite for four more months and see it by your EyES to believe it ,

" seeing is believing "

I will Walk naked on the streets of Japan if xbox one more powerful than Xbox one .

Do you have a prove for the opposite ?! Show me ....

3945d ago
WolfOfDarkness3945d ago (Edited 3945d ago )

I guess there is no use to convince people on that topic " lets just Waite few months until both consoles are out , then I will post again in this page again as a reminder , I am sure and positive about what i said regarding PS4 .

TomOfAllTrades3945d ago

No I think Windows 7 and a Nvidia GTX graphics card speak for themselves....

indysurfn3945d ago

this sounds just like last gens and the gen before that 'load management'. With a new name! “tiled resources”

Ashlen3946d ago (Edited 3946d ago )

What they're talking about is already the way textures work. As you get closer to them higher res textures are displayed.

I can't find any information saying it's anything different than what's already being done.

greenpowerz3946d ago (Edited 3946d ago )

Boy I wish! LOL

No this tech brings in incredible amounts of flawless textures and detail fast at impossibly small amounts of memory amounts needed.

It turned many gigs worth of texture into megs.

Nothing will be fuzzy, blurry or blocky and all textures will be high rez on these platforms no matter how close or far with ridiculous memory savings.

Xbox One games speak for themselves and Xbox One.

Tomorrow at BUILD MSFT will talk about their games across platforms and apps etc(possibly hardware)

There can be only ONE

Ashlen3946d ago

That would be compression. which also is already a common practice.

malokevi3946d ago

@Ashlen

Way to dump all over something you clearly don't understand, for the sole reason that its Microsoft.

Clearly, if they are touting it as a new feature, than there is something novel about it. After reading the article, it seems like the difference between this and regular compression is massive.

Ashlen3946d ago

Please enlighten me.

I was using Google to look for information. And nothing I found got me to believe there was anything special. I haven't heard anything from Nvidia or AMD talking about this at all.

I'm just saying if it was a major step you'd think someone other than Microsoft would be talking about it.

TI_213946d ago

It's mip mapping with a new fancy name, nothing new nor exclusive to MS.

hazardman3946d ago

@ Ashlen

What if MS just released said feature and devs havent gotten an opportunity to work with it. Just saying.

THEDON82z13946d ago (Edited 3946d ago )

If this was such Wondrous technology, you would have herd about this along time ago( you know at e3).. this is simply a refined way of doing compression(similar to ID's Rage engine)it only looks better because it is running on new hardware(just like e3 games were running on pc)...This is more of M$ BLOWING smoke up your A$$...The reality is they are looking for any PR way of making gamer's forget that there hardware is weaker...Trust me if this was any real game changer Nvidea and AMD would be all over this bragging about there own respective versions. M$ is doing one thing smart though..... trying to figure out anyway possible for them to survive the inevitable reality of there system being maxed out in about 2 years while the ps4 just keeps slamming them( just like today with ps3) with new ps4 games!!!!

nypifisel3946d ago

It sounds like LODs, been around forever. And you know DirectX isn't the only API in the world. Though I'm pretty sure you don't even know what any of it means. The Xbox One has inferior hardware, it's just a fact, no "magic cloud" or DX11.2 will change that so what the hell is your problem?

There should really be some public information about this, it's starting to annoy me cause people don't realize they're being duped. The cloud is no magic and wont enhance any performance this generation - maybe the next, we'll see.

TomOfAllTrades3945d ago

The PS4 is more powerful than the Xbox One....
THERE IS NO OUTCOME WHICH CAN SAY OTHERWISE

Man I tend to wonder if you were dropped at birth, especially given that you try to question 'Fact'..

MysticStrummer3946d ago (Edited 3946d ago )

"I was using Google to look for information. And nothing I found got me to believe there was anything special."

Same here. It looks like it was just implemented as a stock feature of DirectX, but it's nothing new and nothing PS4 can't do.

Kingnichendrix3946d ago

it literally is just mip mapping

MysticStrummer3946d ago

Both GPUs in One and PS4 can do this.

RandomDude6553946d ago

Soo........partially resident textures? That's cool

No_Limit3946d ago

In before the PS fans claiming it as nothing more than PR talk like the cloud.

OT, the Xbox One is looking better and better each day.

mahmoods263946d ago

what does this have to do with the cloud exactly?

No_Limit3946d ago (Edited 3946d ago )

It has nothing to do with the cloud but have you seen the comments here everytime deveopers and MS talked about the Cloud? It is like it is impossible and MS and developers lied and other BS. If there is any feature that is remotely positive regarding the xbox1, it will be troll to death like it can't happen. That is what I am implying to.

for example, see below @ Blankolf
vvvvvv

theWB273946d ago

Since Xbox haters like to downplay anything Xbox related...No_Limit was stating that he/she commented before the naysayers put their two cents in and say it was vaporware like the cloud.

So in layman terms, Xbox haters think everything the X1 does is weak and stupid when No_Limit thinks it's a pretty good thing. I agree.

Utalkin2me3946d ago

But they thing is nobody was in here trolling or make comments against such. Just funny you have to go into defense mode when there is no reason.

PirateThom3946d ago (Edited 3946d ago )

You do realise that the PS4 can do this as well, yes?

Edit: Don't disagree because you thought Microsoft had something over the PS4. Look up "Partially Resident Textures", both consoles are using AMD, both support it.

Mystogan3946d ago (Edited 3946d ago )

Not sure about that. They said that it's only for Windows 8 PC's and Xbox One.

Xbox One has Windows 8.

Loki863946d ago (Edited 3946d ago )

It depends what type of OpenGL platform the PS4 is utilizing and exactly what will that entail. Sony has released very few details about their API.

SniperControl3946d ago

@Mystogan this version is MS's, the PS Vita also uses tile rendering which is similar to MS system.

TIER1xWOLFPACKx3946d ago

He is correct everyone it can do it if you read the article you would of seen this in it, this comes straight from the article "Tiled resources automatically swaps in the details whenever a gamer is looking closely at it. This should enable developers to pack in tons of lifelike textures. This functionality is only available on Windows 8.1 and next-gen consoles" so will be available for xb1 and ps4 I'm geussing

tigertom533946d ago

I THOUGHT Microsoft had a custom GPU, that they could implicate higher technology that they where researching..

PFFT3946d ago (Edited 3946d ago )

NOPE!
Exclusive NEW feature only for Windows 8 based platforms!

So PS4 not included.

@tigertom53

Yep the GPU in the XBO is MS custom made.

bicfitness3946d ago

Someone who gets it. This is a pretty standard GPU feature, not some special secret sauce. The level of stupidity from the Xbox faithful is reaching critical levels of hilarity and self-delusion.

BallsEye3946d ago

You have no idea what you're talking about. Another PS4 CAN DO THIS TOO comment. Let's see ps4 do it and then write such comment. MS will not give away their software to sony. It's SOFTWARE. you can have 1000000x ps4 strong machine, if there is no software IT CAN'T DO IT!

"In before the PS fans claiming it as nothing more than PR talk like the cloud."

No this is much more substantial than cloud power, but it's also nothing new and nothing PS4 can't do.

NextGen24Gamer3946d ago

Microsoft revealed a new feature for DirectX 11.2 and Windows 8.1 today called “tiled resources” that enables a graphics card to display a huge amount of detail without overwhelming it with memory-intensive textures.

The ps4 doesn't use direct x 11.2 or windows 8.1

MysticStrummer3946d ago (Edited 3946d ago )

At Elite - "The ps4 doesn't use direct x 11.2 or windows 8.1"

I never said it did.

What MS revealed today is known by other names under other systems, and PS4 can do it. Actually, 360 and PS3 can do it also.

I honestly don't care if you believe me or not, but it's not hard to find with Google.

FrigidDARKNESS3946d ago

The ps4 can do those things but the difference will come down to bus and the 4 Move Engines.

FrigidDARKNESS3946d ago

Absolutely megatexturing on the highest level. This is what the four Move Engines were design for in the xbox one. Until Sony can come up with something innovative the ps4 is severly less powerful.

MysticStrummer3946d ago (Edited 3946d ago )

Sorry to break it to you, but PS4 can do it.

It's nothing new. MS just gave it another name when they added it to DirectX.

Both GPUs in One and PS4 can do it.

DoesUs3946d ago

Good lord, some of you MS fans really need a reality check! Absolutely clueless! Do you have any idea what the move engines are for, and why they are in the box?! Clearly you don't. Jesus H.Christ.

TomOfAllTrades3945d ago

How can a system with more powerful spec's be weaker?
Are you that simple...?

FrigidDARKNESS3945d ago (Edited 3945d ago )

Well, are you that simple to believe in specs on paper without knowing what the hell it means and i hope you are not one of these guys that believe in that ps4 50% more powerful BS.
Specs on paper dont mean a Damn thing its the engineering that counts.
