Journey Becomes Profitable, ThatGameCompany Starts Receiving Royalties

Journey has become profitable according to thatgamecompany, the studio that created the game. The game was in development for over three years and studio boss Jenova Chen had earlier said that they were almost facing bankruptcy but Sony had faith in them and kept funding them.

The game has finally broke even and the critical success might have helped as well. Journey is widely regarded as one of the best games on PSN and a must play if you own a PS3.

It's sad it takes this long

cervantes993951d ago

Agreed. One of the most enjoyable games I have ever played!

FamilyGuy3951d ago

They spent too much on marketing, time and development. Most indies manage their budget better than this. It taking so long is their own fault.

Surprising to hear all the same, thought it sold better.

Sony pays for all that. They are the publisher. It's a percentage based system. That game company has paid off their development costs and is now in profit. It is a shame it took this long as sales are probably slow at this point.

JackVagina3951d ago

there estimated dev time to Sony was 2 years, it took them over 3.

Also by the end they had 17 developers to there original 7

ginsunuva3951d ago

Wait it JUST became profitable??

PirateThom3951d ago

Yeah, I don't know what the budget was, but Jenova Chen nearly backrupt thatgamecompany to make it.

I'm glad they pushed forward and I'm glad Sony felt the investment was worth it because the final product was indeed worthy of the praise it got.

Thatgamecompany was pretty much broke when Sony funded them, looks like the game took a lot to make.

JOurney was actually the first game they tried to make , they had to time to output flow and flower before finishing journey and they still required help from santa monica studio to do the finishing touches.

So yeah no surprise it took this long to be profitable.

Makes sense, while crticilly praised it is a niche tittle.

Good for That Game Company.

RenegadeRocks3951d ago

It is the best selling PSN game. Just that its development required a lot of money. 3 years is a long time.

SonicRush153951d ago

Played this game over and over so many times!

Martywren3951d ago

Concept artist has a very distinct style and if they can translate that into the game well this studio will be making some visually stunning games.
