Resistance 1 used just 10 - 20% of SPUs

This comes straight from Insomniac's brochure released on 1ts January,2008.

Summary of SPU usage found on page 34 of the 38 paged documentation :-

SPUs
All our systems started off as RAW mode
The only long term (not finished this frame) asynchronous
processing is the collision on the raw SPUs
We use [Job Manager] but not all systems use it in the typical way
of fire and forget. Most of our system require the SPU to be
running a particular system at the same time as the PPU.
To ensure the SPU is doing what we want at the correct time we
send [Job Manager] the job and use our own thin
synchronization and job buffering schemes using the locked-line
for communication
10-20% total SPU utilization

pg 31

SPU Configuration
 2 Raw mode SPUs
 One SPU running broad collision
 One SPU running narrow collision
 These run all the time
 3 [Job Manager] SPUs
 In a thread group running SPURS
 [Job Manager] policy module
 All jobs go on these
 1 Unused
 This is for the OS to steal for AC3 Encode etc
 This should be used with its own job manager instance in the
future for jobs that don’t mind getting interrupted by the OS

Bubbles for u. Keep up the good work champ!

I dont see why you have only 3 bubbles.

mikeslemonade5925d ago

This game wouldn't have ran as well on the xbox 360 because of the huge maps, 40 player mutiplayer on dedicated servers with no lag, and the speed of this game. 360 owners are stuck with the slow Gears, Halo, and Mass Effect.

barom5925d ago

actually the reason why XLive doesn't have 40 player or anything on that level is because they use P2P. Which imo sucks especially if you pay for it.

But I guess that's not what they're paying for

mikeslemonade5925d ago

Yea I was meaning to compare all aspects and xbl was included. This is proof that xbl is actually lagging in some areas compared to PSN. I don't think any major 360 multiplayer game every hit even 32 players thus far and the system has been for more than 2 years. The PS2 was able to do it with 32 player with SOCOM 3 and there was lag in the smaller maps, but none of the larger maps.

Lord Anubis5925d ago

Zambrota you are going to have to wait because I had already given you a bubble so it will take a week before I can give you another.

CeruleanSky5925d ago

"Use 10% to 20% of the SPUs' POWER. Clarify this please."

In an ideal PS3 game all three of these things are doing work at the same time:

* PPU
* All non-OS used SPUs
* RSX

and every bus is saturated with data being transfered for each unit so when the current workload is done work can be started immediately without stalling.

The pdf is talking about how they still have a huge amount of parallelizing of their engine workload to do for their games after Resistance.

With Resistance the SPUs were operating much more in lock step than ideal. As they continue to upgrade their PS3 engine(s) they will be detaching more and more processing so that the number of things that can be done at once rises to the point where they will have every SPU operating in parallel constantly.

It is very similar to development on the PS2 but on a much larger scale where the huge leaps in graphic engines came as developers got better at having both VU0 and VU1 operating in parallel.

JsonHenry5925d ago

My question is this - since the CPU only has direct access to 256megs of system RAM - exactly how much of the SPUs can they really use since they can only put so much information through at one time due to the system RAM as is? I am not saying they can't do it. I am just wondering from a devs point of view what tricks can they pull to fix this problem?

Armyless5925d ago

Very very different stuff now.

millertime83065925d ago

I'm not 100% sure, but I believe each SPU has its own cache that it can use for computations

Mu5afir5925d ago

Each SPU can run two operations (threads) at the same time. :)

fenderputty5925d ago

"1.12 - @JSon
I'm not 100% sure, but I believe each SPU has its own cache that it can use for computations "

That's exactly what Heavenly Sword did. It used the SPU's to handle having all those enimies on screen at one time without touching the main RAM.

Armyless5925d ago (Edited 5925d ago )

The SPU's all have their own Cache and they can all SHARE cache and threads with each other SPU INDEPENDANT (if programmed that way) of the PPU.

drewdrakes5925d ago

Are you guys stupid? I said it was using 10 to 20% of the SPUs' power, how is that a wrong statement? The wrong statement is that it uses 10 to 20% of the SPUs. THAT statement means its using about 1 out of 8 SPUs, understand the difference? Its using 5 SPUs, but 10 to 20% of the power of those SPUs. Understand now? God.

So CeruleanSky, i dont know what the hell YOU thought i was talking about.

CeruleanSky5925d ago

"i dont know what the hell YOU thought i was talking about."

Obviously no one knew what the hell you were talking about.

PlayStation 3 Games That Desperately Need a PS5 Remaster

The PlayStation 3 may not have been the strongest generation for Sony, but there were still some diamonds in the rough that deserve a revisit as PS5 remasters.

Even if they could just remaster and put on PSVR2, some would still look great as VR titles and could do a whole lot to bolster the headset w these exclusives! I'd imagine the investment of reworking these titles into VR would be way less than building new games from the ground up, and they could be amazing experiences, and VR often makes flat games feel fresh again. The Resistance and Killzone games are particularly what I want to see!!

Rude-ro41d ago

I played killzone 3 in 3d and it really changed the game per being immersive.
In vr, that would be even more awesome.

darthv7241d ago

Funny you mention that... my son wanted to play some PS3 games in 3d on my PS tv and he was blown away by how good KZ3 was. It really was a great addition to the game. Im surprised there have not been more 3d games from that era being ported to the PSVR/VR2.

_SilverHawk_41d ago

resistance 1-3, killzone 1-3, uncharted 1-3, uncharted golden abyss, folklore, socom 4 , motorstorm, twisted metal, MAG, heavenly sword

Cacabunga40d ago

Killzone 2+3
Sly Thieves in Time
Crack in Time
God of War Ascension
Motorstorm
Modnation racer
Infamous 1+2

Profchaos40d ago (Edited 40d ago )

Killzone trilogy in VR would be amazing bonus points if they offer shadow fall.

There was a psvr1 Killzone project that supermassive was working on at one stage which wasn't up to scratch and Sony brand it back in house I was hoping we would see that on psvr2 eventually.

Personally I'd love to see some more love or acknowledgement of psvr2 from Sony in general it was a expensive headset and Sony barely acknowledge it's existence

seanpitt2340d ago

The amount of work needed to remaster these games wouldn't be beneficial on a financial and business sense.. MGS4 would probably be the best bet as it would need the least amount of work!

Iceball200041d ago

YEAAASSSSS! I miss this franchise and wanna play it so bad again.

Father__Merrin41d ago

The time is perfect for a resistance fall of man game campaign coop multiplayer

InUrFoxHole41d ago

The resistance series is str8 trash to me. Socom 3 I would welcome. Or killzone MP.

Marcus Fenix41d ago

A Resistance reboot will be awesome

Michiel198941d ago

That's what Bungie should make, Ill keep saying it until it happens

1Victor41d ago (Edited 41d ago )

Resistance was ok but Warhawk and Starhawk was better and kept me coming back for almost a decade of fun and petty revenge on the loud mouth unskilled players 🤣
Edit I loved capture the flag dropping the pot on the flag carrier was extremely satisfying as well as transforming your plane in bot form and stumping them to death 😱

My take:

Single player
3, 2, 1

Multiplayer
3, 1, 2

Overall
3, 2, 1

I beat the lengthy single player in 1 multiple times and spent hours in the online too. Plus 1 featured my home town! Special mention to the audio design in 1: playing that with surround headphones blew me away.

Note: I have the platinum for Resistance 2.

Eidolon716d ago

Resistance 1 MP will always be my favorite. Call it nostalgia or whatever, but that was my jam, felt more balance, natural.

Miraak82 716d ago

i have the platinium too , 10k kills in online ranked matches was no joke . Took me 3-4 months straight grinding but it was fun . To put it in perspective you only got like 25 kills per match if you were 1st place every match that's at Least 400 matches in 1st

Sciurus_vulgaris717d ago

I only played the 3 main Resistance titles. My ranking would be;
1. Resistance 3
2. Resistance: Fall of Man
3. Resistance 2

GoodGuy09717d ago

Man I loved 3's campaign. Another gem stuck on the ps3 and who knows if insomniac will go back to the franchise.

fr0sty716d ago

Resistance, Warhawk, MAG, Motorstorm, there's so many first party gems on PS3 that Sony has just left to die...

P_Bomb717d ago

Never played Burning Skies but I still have Retribution.

monkey602716d ago

Burning Skies was about 3 hours long and rather inconsequential. You haven't missed anything

porkChop716d ago

Honestly, Burning Skies was shit. There's no two ways about it. At first I thought it looked terrible, then I second guessed myself. Big mistake.

darthv72715d ago

Retribution has this really cool feature where you could use a PS3 to link a controller to it and play. So if you had a 2000 or 3000 hooked to a tv, you can use a real controller. All of this predates the PSP Go's ability to sync a sixaxis to it via bluetooth.

Yui_Suzumiya716d ago

Resistance 3 was shocking and brilliant. Loved it.

Days Gone Director Pitched Open World Resistance; Wasn't Interested in Syphon Filter Reboot

Days Gone director & former Bend Studio dev Jeff Ross says he pitched an open-world Resistance game to Sony; he wasn't interested in a Syphon Filter reboot.

P_Bomb832d ago (Edited 832d ago )

Sony rejected an open world Resistance? Come ON guys. Stop with these timed deals for Deathloop etc and let’s go!

This plus the fact Days Gone hit 9 million has me scratching my head this week. Why so cynical?

porkChop832d ago

Resistance doesn't need to be open world though. Just because it can technically work doesn't mean it's a good direction for the franchise.

P_Bomb832d ago (Edited 832d ago )

No I know, but seeing as the franchise has no current direction, I’m in the camp of anything’s better than nothing. Could always just dip a toe in like GOW, TLOU2.

excaliburps832d ago

Well, yeah, but any new Resistance is good! LOL! XD

EvertonFC832d ago

Agree tbh it sounded straight off the bat what halo infinite turned into but just a resistance version of it.

Army_of_Darkness832d ago

An open world resistance based on resistance 3 would be awesome ballz!

CanadianTurtle831d ago

As a huge fan of the series, an open-world Resistance would not be a bad idea. Especially if it had Day's Gone's gameplay engine. Replace the motorcycle with a military hummer or a chimeran vehicle. I think it could work very well.

The problem with continuing Resistance as a linear FPS game is that the market doesn't respond to those games anymore. I think the games industry is tired of 8 hour (linear-shooter) campaigns. That was acceptable in the PS3/360 days but now I think the industry wants more. IF a new Resistance game were to come out and it followed the gameplay structure of the original trilogy, it would be regarded as "just another FPS." But if it got the Days Gone treatment, it can attract a larger fanbase.

Rhythmattic831d ago (Edited 831d ago )

Porkchop
Maybe they're not considering the halo effect ?
Mwhahahahahaha

Mr_cheese831d ago

I'd try any new resistance experience but if I'm being truly honest, my first instinct is that it would not touch the heights of the original trilogy and should continue to be a story driven linear campaign. Especially with the technology afforded in this gen, even linear can have a very open feel to it.

sparky77832d ago

That 9ml was an estimate, he confirmed he doesn't have executive level sales figures so he just guessed. I would assume it was much lower than that with the majority coming from PS+ and discounts.

If Sony brought Housemarquee after Returnal didn't sell 9ml, it's obvious sales aren't all Sony cares about.

jukins832d ago (Edited 832d ago )

Thats what im thinking. Ntm the game was on sale relatively faster than most sony 1st party games. Released buggy horrible framerate that took months to "fix" and it took about 10chours of slow paced gameplay till you got to a point where you got enough mods tools and guns for it to be enjoyable.

I find it weird that all the sudden ppl are praising the game asking for a sequel just because a former director said it sold x amount. Given the 6 year cycle, bad launch, 50/50 reception and to leads who were supposedly not a good fit leaving/ getting fired shows why sony probably didnt greenlight a sequel

EvertonFC832d ago

He didnt guess ffs, he used data from a trophies website with there own internal data which matched up.

Ausbo831d ago

That’s different though. The ps5 was in its infancy when returnal released. Different sales targets

MrBeatdown831d ago

If they were pitching some kind of third person, open world Resistance with destructible environments similar to Red Faction Guerrilla where you can take down Chimera towers and giant robots, sure. But I don't want Far Cry with aliens, which is all I see this being.

I'm fine without another Days Gone too. I have yet to play much of it, but it seems like a great game with a tired setting. I'm not dying for more zombies.

I'll take Syphon Filter in any form though.

arkard831d ago

It was revealed the director didn't use officisl sales figures.

https://www.gameinformer.co...

porkChop830d ago

Yeah I saw. You can't base sales on trophies. Those trophies include anyone who bought the game used, borrowed from friends, households with more than 1 gamer, rentals, PS+ subscribers, review copies, etc. Those altogether would account for likely at least a couple million PSN accounts.

What I find ridiculous is that he says he still "stands by" his numbers. If the game was as successful as he thinks it was then Sony wouldn't have shot down any chance of a sequel. He shouldn't have gone around talking shit like he did with a source as flimsy as trophies, he made a fool of himself. He likely burned some bridges, limiting his options in the future.

porkChop832d ago

As far as Syphon Filter goes, it's a shame that after two generations of leaks and rumors the game was never actually in development. MGS is dead, Splinter Cell might as well be dead from what we've heard. Sony's had a massive opportunity to come in and take over a dormant genre, and they're just dragging their feet. So many opportunities to bring franchises back and they just don't.

Magog832d ago

They already did. TLOU2 is the best stealth game I've ever played.

GhostofHorizon832d ago

Rumors from multiple sources have it that an open world 3rd person tactical stealth game is in works as a first party Playstation game. Perhaps they just didn't want to double down.

CaptainHenry916831d ago

I saw that but who's the developer?

GhostofHorizon831d ago

I don't think it mentioned a developer.

Exvalos831d ago

Splinter cell is coming back, it was confirmed already.

porkChop831d ago

Yes. I know that. I didn't say it is dead, I said it might as well be. They're literally making a "stealthy Assassin's Creed" but with Splinter Cell paint.

+ Show (1) more replyLast reply 831d ago
Relientk77832d ago

*Sigh* I don't know if Syphon Filter is ever coming back

KeyAppearance832d ago

I really wish we got more grounded action-crime or action-espionage games, not everything has to be over the top action RPGs and have sci-fi/superhero/fantasy elements.

Especially after seeing that jawdropping Matrix showcase... we can really rival some great action films if done right :O

Phantom68832d ago

Shame about Siphon Filter as I believe there is a market for it.
Also, there are some rumors that Sony is working on a new game that mix both Splinter Cell and MGS features.
Let's hope it is true.
