Demon’s Souls: The Best RPG I Have Ever Played

After months of neglect, my copy of Demon’s Souls was left on my shelf gathering dust, but after watching the impressive Dark Souls 2 demo shown at E3 last week, I decided to give it another go.

It's one of my top3 RPG'S of all time. Only liked Gothic 2 better. Dark Souls was good but nowhere near Demon's Souls imo, but I'm still very excited for Dark Souls II.

Ragthorn3957d ago

I bought the Gothic Franchise on Steam for 5 bucks (USD), it was a steal! I'm going to start Gothic 2 soon, just taking a break from the awesomeness of Gothic 1! Demon's Souls is better than Dark Souls to me aswell, Boletaria, the Nexus, the ONLINE (no lag-stabs!) and the items imo. Wondering how Dark Souls 2 will be, because it is looking great so far.
OT: Demon's Souls is a must-have for hardcore RPG fans on the PS3, I bought it a year ago for 20$, one of the greatest 20$ I spent in my life!

ZodTheRipper3957d ago

If you liked Gothic you'll love Gothic 2 ;)
I don't know why but this game just has something very special at it and I could still play it no matter the dated graphics and gameplay and even after playing through it for over 5 times. Make sure you get the Addon with the pirates, it makes the game even better! :)

sherimae24133957d ago (Edited 3957d ago )

ok guys seriously, which is harder, better, larger world, enemy varieties and longetivity?
demon's souls or dark souls.....

still...never played any of these "souls" games.

MrSwankSinatra3957d ago (Edited 3957d ago )

Demon Soul's - Harder, longevity.
Dark Soul's - Larger World, enemy varieties.

which one is better is entirely subjective on the person, me personally i prefer dark souls. but i still love demon's souls.

Locksus3957d ago

I think neither is harder than the other. If you played Demon's souls first for example, you wouldn't feel that Dark Souls is as hard because the games play pretty much the same so you would already be good at DaS when you start playing it for the first time.
I went for DaS first and I didn't think that DeS was that hard at all and I prefer DaS to DeS, simply because it was my first Souls game.

SirBradders3957d ago

@Locksus Well said far too many people say this ones harder then the other.

I played dark souls first and found demons a walk at the beginning only sue to the fact i was familiar with the concept.

@Sherimae2413 Although Demons is a quality title non the less i prefer dark due to it's more content but they are both equally challenging, rewarding and fun to play.

nix3957d ago

i played Demon's Souls first.. finished it and now i can't even go past the tower demons in Dark Souls. so irritating. /:

darren_poolies3957d ago

@Locksus

Thank God some one else thinks this!

Blacktric3957d ago

"I think neither is harder than the other. If you played Demon's souls first for example, you wouldn't feel that Dark Souls is as hard..."

That's because Dark Souls is easier in comparison to Demon's Souls. People who constantly whine about how hard Blighttown is nearly always the ones who have never experienced Valley Of Defilement to its fullest. Infested Barbarians of Blighttown cannot even be compared to Giant Depraved Ones for instance, let alone their Black Phantom versions. Even each one of the typical BP's you face in DeS (each of the ones in 1-4 for instance) are ten times harder than NPC invaders of Dark Souls.

dorron3957d ago

I'm currently playing Dark Souls. It's a great game, but to me it doesn't quite feel like Demon's Souls. Also, this one is easier.

Demon's Souls definitely is better. It's a master piece. One of my favorite games this gen.

darren_poolies3957d ago

It's easier because you played Demon's Souls first.

Saksoy3957d ago

Longetivity will be Dark Souls since Demon Soul servers our getting shut down from what i heard.

MrSwankSinatra3957d ago

nah atlus said the servers would remain up for the foreseeable future. they were supposed to shut them down, but way too many people play demon's souls for them to do it.

DragonKnight3957d ago

No they aren't. Atlus have stated that Demon's Souls servers will stay online indefinitely as long as there is an active player base. Also, considering Atlus put Demon's Souls on PSN, it's unlikely that they are shutting down the servers.

Demon's souls has harder, longer levels but the bosses are easy. Dark Souls has more optional bosses, weapons, larger areas, the levels are typically easy and the bosses are hard. Overall I think, after just recently playing demon's souls for the second time compared to the 8 times I have beaten dark souls, I would say dark souls is all around harder (because some of those bosses are rediculous), a better game, and more rewarding. But I suggest you play both as people have their preferences.

MysticStrummer3957d ago

Demon's Souls was better to me, but Dark Souls is still great. They are my number one and two favorite games of the generation.

As for your categories :

Demon's - Harder, better (to me), and I played it longer so longevity.

Dark - Larger world, more enemy variety

There were some things I liked better about Dark Souls but overall Demon's Souls was my favorite.

Fakdafakinfakerz3957d ago

I found Dark Souls more enjoyable. Probably because I was already used to the gameplay and controls. IMO Dark Souls is a better package but Demons Souls has something special... I don't know what... something Dark Souls hasn't... (the Maiden in black? Maybe... lol)

Scrivlar3957d ago

My favourite is Dark Souls, probably because I played it first. Also I think it's true that which ever game you play second will feel a bit easier because you're experienced with the style right from the start.

xXBlondieVanHarlowXx3957d ago (Edited 3957d ago )

@sherimae

"never played any of these "souls" games"

@_@ woah, you've gotta get on that. Start with Demon Souls. It came out first, i'm guessing that's what devs wanted us to experience first >_< I also found it the most enjoyable. The Nexus, the Maiden in black, Old King Allant, Astrea :O

Damn, I seriously need to go & play it again -__-"
Have fun! :D

imt5583957d ago (Edited 3957d ago )

If you a really hardcore gamer, play Demon's Souls. This game is not for pussy's.:)

Dark Souls is a little bit easier.

CrossingEden3957d ago

dark souls is easier but MORE FUN, which is what matters

This was only €10 on the PS Store a few weeks. I thought why not and while I think the game is really hard it just keeps you going back to it again and again.

AlexanderNevermind3957d ago (Edited 3957d ago )

FYI It was free for PS+ members. I picked it back up. Very Challenging to say the least. Its (and Dark Souls too) one of a very few games that make me want to throw my controller. You think you have a enemy's move down and your down, lost all your souls and have to make your way back to where you died to get your souls back.

If you've never played Demon's Souls or Dark Souls, pick them up on the cheap now.

Also, I think the Bosses in Dark Souls are a little harder.

HarryMasonHerpderp3957d ago (Edited 3957d ago )

So is this a JRPG or an RPG?
Is a JRPG all about the traits such as anime style characters and such? or is it just an RPG made by Japanese developers that makes it an "JRPG"? The game is very Western though (obviously still has a lot of Japanese themes) so is it just an RPG? I can't make up my mind >_<

Oh and Demons Souls is one of the best JRPG/RPG's this gen in my opinion.

The best PS5 exclusives 2024

With so many PS5 exclusives to choose from, it can be a little overwhelming to pick which one to play. This is especially true for a new PlayStation gamer who has yet to experience the wonder of PlayStation-exclusive storytelling. So, here's KnowTechie's take on the best PS5 exclusives in 2024 and beyond

PlayStation is killing it with the exclusives this year. Exclusive wise, what has xbox released this year?

VersusDMC9d ago

They won't complain about Microsoft not releasing games here but put all their effort into saying that only first party counts. Games like Rebirth and Grandblue Relink don't count. Games published by Sony like Helldivers 2, Stellar Blade and Rise of the Ronin don't count because Sony don't own the studios.

It's some narrative building so for when Hellblade 2 come out they can say, seemingly without shame, that Microsoft is actually releasing first party games this year. And claim victory.🙃

Chevalier9d ago

Weird 1st party games didn't matter when Xbox had so little, but, now they're important again? Guess Ark 3, Stalker 2 don't count any more?

KyRo9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

ARK 3 doesn't exist and it's just a timed exclusive. It's also a game that a majority of the ARK player base doesn't want as it's a massive deviation from what people like about the original game

Abnor_Mal9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

Honestly to me it doesn’t matter what they say, they are just finally getting a chance to say all the things PS fan(boy)s were saying to them for the past few years. Let them get that, they deserve a “win” for a change.

The new narrative is that suddenly first party games matter again when awhile ago they didn’t, but that was because they were struggling with the same three games with the occasional fourth or fifth. That games should be everywhere on all platforms since that’s whats happening to theirs. The consoles don’t matter just the ability to play anywhere. Whatever Xbox is doing Sony will soon follow.

They’re not moving the goalpost anymore, but rather just moving the whole damn stadium.

jwillj2k49d ago

Only a incel would care about who published what and who owns who.

If it’s not on the other consoles it’s an exclusive.

Killing what? Where are the 1st party games??
Stellar Blade and FF7 is what I’m seeing this year.. so shallow!!!!

andy859d ago

Doesn't really matter as long as they're great games. Baffles me why people put an emphasis on 1st party. They're still games you can't play anywhere else this year

Cacabunga8d ago

Andy

PS brand is my favorite because of their stellar first party software.. currently I see absolutely nothing to go crazy for..

CS78d ago

Nonsense.

PS1 and PS2 was built on great third party exclusives like FF, MGS, GTA & Tekken.

RonnySins9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

Killing it my a$$! The 1st party is still MIA and no... Remakes and remasters don't count.

andy859d ago

I mean they literally do count. Imagine saying FF7 Rebirth doesn't count 😂

Tody_ZA9d ago (Edited 9d ago )

@Andy85 Don't forget the remakes for Demon's Souls and Shadow of the Colossus, two of the best PlayStation games around!

And beyond PlayStation, what about Resident Evil 2 and 4? RonnySins wins the award for dumbest opinion!

raWfodog9d ago

Of course I love the games I’ve played from PS but I don’t believe we need to limit it to ‘exclusive’ to acknowledge that Xbox will be releasing some good games this year also. In that same vein, I believe that Xbox diehards shouldn’t limit their acknowledgment of good PS games to 1st party. There are plenty of good games to go around for everybody.

Tacoboto9d ago

This is a Playstation article about Playstation games and your comment is about Xbox. Can't you just celebrate what PS has without dragging this into console war BS?

ChasterMies9d ago

I don’t think Microsoft is releasing games exclusively on Xbox anymore. They have some timed exclusives that release on Xbox first.

Returnal, Astro Bot, and Ratchet made having it since day one worth it.

GT7 free updates and Spiderman 2 and others at 60fps have made this last year more than okay.

But yeah, it’s been dry lately. BG3 and third party have made great filler, but we ready for that SOCOM or Killzone announcement and some more 1st party goodness. Crossing fingers for Ghost of Tsushima 2 announcement this summer.

Didn’t know Helldivers was exclusive! Wtf is going on at Xbox that they can’t get these games, series s strikes again.

SonyStyled8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

Sony owns the Helldivers IP. The first was a PS3/Vita/PC game. It was never an Xbox game that they could ‘get’ a decade ago. I’m not sure what the upset is with Xbox here

CS78d ago

Lol, how do you ignore Rebirth one of the best games ever made?

anast9d ago

Looks like they are on par with the previous gens. Solid games all around. Interestingly enough, we can't say they released a bad game yet this gen. Unlike the Quiet Man dustup.

I actually do not mind if Marathon releases on multiple platforms . I just wish that Marathon has a dedicated single player campaign.

DaniMacYo8d ago

Helldivers 2 is exactly what gaming needed. I’m loving it.

Dark Souls: Archthrones Reaffirms Modding Is The Best Thing To Happen To Games

The prevalence of parrying: Why is it so popular?

Parrying has been creeping into more games, with almost every high-profile title of the last few years featuring it in some way.  Why?

phoenixwing32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

i understand the authors frustration i'm not the best at parrying in games. not that i can't complete a game that requires it but it is a definite harder thing for me than other kinds of techniques in games. which might be the main reason it's so heavily added in games nowadays. want to make your game challenging without having to do a lot of work? just add a parry boss. (what i mean by parry boss is a boss you have to beat by parrying such that their attacks will kill you otherwise)

Dudeson32d ago (Edited 32d ago )

I always think it's fine as long as such games also have the roll/dodge panic button. But I understand the will to parry, it seems so cinematic in a fight when you pull it off.
