PlayStation 4 vs Xbox One: Which one has the better gaming controller?

The brutal rivalry between the Sony PlayStation 4 and Microsoft Xbox One is surely one of epic proportions. Specs sheets are being thrown left and right as arguments in favor of one console or the other, exclusive titles get analyzed and compared, while each company is using every possible occasion to strike at its opponent. Sometimes, though, we can get a bit carried away in our silly little arguments, focusing on small details that don’t always have a profound impact on our gaming experience. We do tend to forget the importance of some fundamental features of every game console, such as the controller.

More advanced controller: PS4
More comfortable controller: Xbox One's controller

Wintersun6163950d ago

So you've held and played with both of them? Even if you had, it's all subjective as far as comfort goes.

I prefer DualShock but they're both great in their own ways.

Nitrowolf23950d ago

I think the DS4 obviously wins in terms of changes.

But Until I have felt either one of them in my hand, why are we getting asked this so f'n early when the consoels aren't even out

georgeenoob3950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

Xbox 1 hands down.

360 controller was the best controller and this one is even better. I understand some people have their own preference, but majority of unbiased people would agree the x1 controller is way better.

Notice I said unbiased, definitely not n4g.

Lord_Sloth3950d ago

@ georgeenoob

You realize people can be bias towards the 360 controller as well, right? It isn't just PS fans who are bias against the competition.

miyamoto3950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

how can anyone defend or buy a product from a backstabbing company like m$?

if they had their way its the end of gaming as we know it

product over principles?

Xbox 1 hands down."

"Notice I said unbiased, definitely not n4g."

Says the ultra biased MS fanboy with the 2 bubbles. You aint fooling anybody, except yourself.

And to opinska, what choice do you have? what use linux? no thanks, far more difficult to handle and way less driver support. What pay Apple their ridiculously high prices? What go with some other more obscure OS? you really dont have a choice and its not like he was buying/got his computer for the MS OS. So shut it stupid!

sic_chops3950d ago

Apparently George up there has held and played the DS4. I won't make a judgement until I use both.

Heartnet3950d ago

Ergonomically speaking its all on the Xbox controller... has been since the 360 and why Sony havnt changed there analogue placement is beyond me...

Ds3 controller was far to small and bad placement of analogue sticks.... didnt bother me to much but in comparison to the XBox 360 controller it isnt comfortable :L

@GoldPunch

and having a touch pad and a bright led light on it doesnt make it more Advanced xD by that logic having a windows 8 doublesided tablet makes it more advanced than an iPad cuz its got 2 screens..... No... just no...

Patrick3950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

@opinska
The Real Peter Moore hit the nail on the head. When you go in to buy a PC you dont get a list of operating systems to choose one from.... you dont get a choice at all. Can you imagine what would happen to MS if you walked in to buy a PC and the guy behind the counter could say "Would you like MS Windows OS or Googles new PC Android OS in your PC?" lol.. Id be like hell yeah I want Android and so would a lot of other people and MS would begin to be less the huge deep pockets company many of yall gloat about. The only reason they are as large as they are, is because you have no other options. Give people options and see what happens.

OT... I love the dual shock and I am looking forward to getting the new one in my hands. Looks even more comfortable.

Greatness Awaits and U R NOT (red)E

Boody-Bandit3950d ago

All I know is what I didn't like about these controllers (360 & DS3) it appears both companies have addressed. I will wait until I get my hands on them for myself before passing judgment.

TotalHitman3950d ago

@Heartnet, what's wrong with the analogue placement? I assume most PS fans including myself prefer the analogues where they are. I've tried using the 360 controller and the analogue placement is off putting. For those with small hands (including myself), the DualShock3 is much more comfortable, whereas the 360 controller feels big and clunky. However, that is my opinion.

Dee_913950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

I just like how the xbox one controller looks.but I never liked the thumbsticks and rop buttons on the xbox controller

Cam9773950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

And you've held them? I've held them both and the PS4 controller is the superior product. Not only has it been remodeled to suit those XBONE fanboys complaining about a "tiny controller" (it has longer grips and better button spacing), but it also has more advanced tech integrated such as the touchpad and ability to charge it through a USB.

And I'm sorry, but the Xbone controller has very, very little new functions to get hyped about, it still requires a battery pack for goodness sake!

This aspect is fairly subjective but I firmly believe that the PS4 controller has the prettier aesthetics when compared to the XBONE controller. I don't know about anybody else, but I think the XBONE controller looks really ugly whereas the PS4 one looks sleek and comfortable.

UNGR3950d ago

Yeah some troll on N4G got his hands on both controllers. SMH you kids are getting desperate.

No_Limit3950d ago

@Cam977, "I think the XBONE controller looks really ugly whereas the PS4 one looks sleek and comfortable."

georgeenoob3950d ago

Little new functions? Do you not know about its rumble, which is a lot more advanced than DS4?

Argument over.

AngryEnglish3950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

Nicely put Angelic

Your hands tell you which controller you find best for you.... Not your eyes

Both controllers will have been tested and gone through many changes before the versions we see now, its not a case of some tool sat in the office drawing shapes and choosing which he likes the look of.

After extensive testing these will both be excellent controllers seperated by personal preference

AngelicIceDiamond3950d ago

@Angry Exactly If I'm playing on PlayStation I can simply adjust to it, and same with Xbox.

Controllers have never been something to argue over. Its something that's purely subjective.

I can play with both and easily adjust myself to both controllers, I dunno what others excuses are.

dantesparda3950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

Very unfanboyish of you, now if we could all be this honest. I completely agree, i adjust real quickly to either controller, they both have their pros and cons, but that is just a matter of my opinion, not some fact. Its refreshing to see someone act so civilized about it, like that.

I dunno man, the handles for the pS4 dual shock 4 are more curved, rounded out, and seem longer. To me, it looks like it will be even more comfy than the dual shock 3 (which I already found to be pretty comfy). The bottom looks like it has a nice groove to grip the contours of my hands (damn I sound like an infomercial atm lol). And my hands are kinda large, so it looks like it will fit pretty snuggly.

I also like the slightly concave grooves in the analog sticks--it's not too deep, so those who hate concave won't dislike it too much, while those like me who do like it concaved can enjoy it more.

Heartnet3950d ago

It better be more comfortable than the Ds3 but i spose thats to be expected and a easy to reach milestone..

Heck i had to buy the EA sports grips just to have some ease of use wiht my DS3.... Controller far to small and light... Dunno about you but a controller needs some added weight to it.

fermcr3950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

This gen the X360 had a better controller then the PS3... next gen remains to be seen.

X1's controller looks very similar to the X360's, with small alterations.

PS4's controller seems to be a improvement over the PS3's. It's bigger and looks more comfy then the DS3.

Heartnet3950d ago

Its bigger and aside from the led light thing attached to it looks rather similar albeit a little more curved..

Ergonomically i still reckon XBox will be more comfortable to hold. And i think the X1 controller is like us aid small alterations but theyve said something like 40+ changes... etc The D-Pad is a huge improvement lol glad they went with the sony like approach.. almost xD

MariaHelFutura3950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

Controllers are entirely preference. The 'share button' is my favorite feature of either controller and the PS4 controller doesn't have a battery pack.

Mystogan3950d ago

How does not having removable batteries something positive?

What do you do when the battery stops working?

The X1 controller has the battery pack integrated with the design. So it doesn't get in the way now.

No_Limit3950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

It is the same argument regarding Apple iPhone and their computers not having removable batteries as an option while competitors allow for those options; yet, Apple fans will continue to defend their product to death. Same applies here.

Yea, if the battery dies within 2 years, buying a $15 battery pack vice forking out another $60 to buy a new controller is just not a better option. /S

MariaHelFutura3950d ago

The PS3s controllers don't need batteries to operate.

Bzone243950d ago

Neither does the Xbox controller if it's hooked up to the console via usb cord. That is the only way either controller will work without a battery. PS3 does have a battery, just not replaceable without taking the controller apart.

kickerz3950d ago

my favourite feature from either controller is xbox rumble in the triggers. i think that is awesome :)

Hicken3950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

@Mystogan: The DS3 easily lasts YEARS. I got a used 80GB PS3 back in 2008 and the controller still works.

Not having removable batteries is a positive because it's batteries you don't have to buy.

@No_Limit: Yeah... no. If the battery in an Apple device lasted as long, that'd be one thing... but it doesn't. As for battery packs, that'll be something extra you'll have to buy for the X1 controller, as it'll be running AA batteries out of the box. So there's that extra cost off the bat, and it probably won't be as cheap as $15.

@Bzone: In the case of the XBOne, the USB doesn't QUITE charge the battery. It still burns some charge there; the controller just happens to get more power from the system than the battery. Microsoft has said, though, that it doesn't recharge the batteries that way.

@Maria: I wouldn't say it's ALL preference, as things like the Share button and touchpad are objective improvements that can be "graded."

Edit: Overall, I think the DS4 has more improvements that will have an impact on gameplay.

Bzone243950d ago

Where in my post did I say it charged the batteries. I was talking about the only way to use the controllers without any battery.

It will charge with a charge pack though.

T23950d ago

@mystogan - just stop ... I have four ps3 controllers six years old. Not one has ever lost any charge

jeffgoldwin3950d ago

You can really tell the brainwashed fans here like Hicken who say they like not being to have the option of changing batteries, like its a good.

Newsflash, batteries lose charge over time and need to be replaced. I get that some of u have 5 or 6 year old controllers that still can hold a whopping 1-2 hour charge, but no ty.

Xbox One controller for me. My thumbs always collide on the dualshock. X1 controller beats the Dualshock by miles. There's a reason most pro gamers use an Xbox controller. Most PC-version games were played with X1 controllers at E3.

Touchpad on Dualshock seems pretty useful for switching weapons in AC4 for example. But it's nothing that couldn't be done with a normal Controller.

strickers3950d ago

According to the podcast I listened to( it was Gamesradar or Joystic) , 3rd party next Gen games were almost all demoed using Dualshock 4.

mxrider21993950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

do you play on negative sensitivity bc your thumbs should never be that far in that direction (atleast at the same time) haha
edit: i even have extenders on my controller and they never hit...

True_Samurai3950d ago

Wow more advanced because of a touch pad -___- and two new buttons

GribbleGrunger3950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

The answer is very simple: The ergonomic controller is the best. The other is a learned skill, not a natural skill. My hands at rest on my lap are always symmetrical. Nature decided that, not a designer.

GameCents3950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

You are exactly right. And when I play most games my thumbs rest very symmetrically on the left stick and the face buttons.
Except of course when I'm playing an FPS. ;)

In all seriousness, it is all subjective. Most of the world seems to prefer the asymmetrical approach, proven by the number of 3rd party controller designs but others prefer the 1996 way, putting the d-pad in the predominant position even though it no longer is the predominant tool for input.
That's okay I say. To each his own.

Jakens3950d ago

I like what both controllers have but I would say I like Xbox a little more. Here is why.

The Xbox right thumb stick is placed so that my right thumb can move left and right very easily. This is a very natural movement for my thumb based on the position of the stick on the controller.

The Xbox left thumb stick is placed so that my right thumb can move forward and aft very easily. This is a very natural movement for my thumb based on the position of the stick on the controller.

Playstation however, has FPS play as a "learned skill, not a natural skill". Using your words against you. This would be correct, albeit in my favor sir and not in yours.

"My hands at rest on my lap are always symmetrical". This part is true for all people. You may have a cookie.

I must say though for one of my thumbs to mostly move forward and aft and the other to mostly move left and right on a pad, it is only "natural" that the sticks would be offset by a little bit. Xbox does this, PS4 does not.

"Nature decided that, not a designer". would be correct, albeit in my favor sir and not in yours.

I do have a slight complain about the Xbox controller and that is that the thumb sticks are offset by a little too much. I want them a little more like the PS4 controller.

Honestly, it really doesn't matter to me too much because I adjust within a few seconds or I could buy a third party controller.

GribbleGrunger3950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

@Jenkin: Although you disagree with what I say, you disagree with intelligence. I WILL from this point on, weigh my opinion against your excellent explanation.

Bubble to you, Sir.

Hicken3950d ago

Except that making it easier to do the more natural motion invariably makes it harder to do the less natural motion. Meaning that the asymmetrical placement of the sticks is detrimental to OVERALL performance.

The left stick making it easier to move left and right means these motions will be better executed, at a slight cost to moving back and forward. Which is alright, because that's an easier, more natural motion to make anyway; it's not something that would be hindered all that much.

In all honesty, it's the right stick that should swap with the face buttons, if you say it allows for better left and right movement, so that it makes for improved vertical motion. Again, your natural motions won't be hindered as much as the less natural motions would be in the opposite situation.

You close by saying it doesn't matter, because you adjust within a few seconds. Well why does the layout of the DS matter? It would take you as much time, perhaps a little more, to adjust, provided you're not accustomed to the Xbox layout in the first place.

With it actually offering improved ability for the less natural movements, as you call them, it shouldn't take more than a few seconds for you to adapt to that. And hell, it's only one thumb, anyway. Not like it's a completely different controller layout all around.

Gaming_Guru3950d ago

That's a common thing to say about the controllers given previous controller designs, but if they are like their counterparts I will most likely find both of them comfortable, functional (fighting games aren't the best of the previous directional pad with XBOX), and well designed.

I'm the type of person who adapts to each device than to buy products that all look and do the same things.

r1sh123950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

because they are quite similar to the 360 and ps3 controllers respectively, I currently prefer the 360 controller (apart from that stupid ass battery pack).

With the controllers being very similar, I can only assume the X1 controller is better.

Although, I remember I saw a video on machinima about the controller.
1 of the youtubers said its the best controller hes held, and its perfect for shooting, driving games.
(he said that)

I can only tell when I have them in my hand, but I do think the x1 controller looks better.

GrownUpGamer3950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

The positions of the analog sticks are key in which is the most comfortable controller.

I bet my balls that if the Xbox 360/One Controller design was a PS design PS fanboys here will be saying the contrary.

By the way i never liked the PS controller design. Not in the PS1, PS2, PS3 and i own playstations.

3950d ago
omi25p3950d ago (Edited 3950d ago )

X1 controller easily.

Ergonomic shape, Pressure sensitive rumble triggers. Replaceable battery, The triggers are better so you dont end up clicking them all the time like on the PS3/PS4, Bigger and it doesn't have tiny little buttons squeezed into little gaps, Like the start and share button on the PS4.

If the materials the controllers were made out of this generation are anything to go by, The 360 controller is solid where as the DS3 shatters.

I literally have a hole in the bottom of my controller from were i rage quited playing Killzone 2 on hard. The whole left side of the controller is being held together with masking tape

Also how is this even up for debate. They 360 controller is so popular there is a version of it on for the PS3, The WII U's controller is almost an exact copy. Its the best controller because other controllers wants to be like it.

Impulse Triggers – Xbox One’s Wireless Controller sports four vibration motors – a small one behind each trigger that adds precise haptic feedback to the finger tips, and a larger in each grip for large scale rumbles. This gives users a sense of in-game directionality and depth, creating rich, immersive experiences where gunshots, car crashes and explosions can come to life.

Higher Quality Headset Audio – The data transfer rate between the controller and console has been improved, allowing for higher fidelity audio in communication headsets. In-game chat over Xbox Live, according to the team, will be in many cases clearer than talking on a phone.

Revamped Thumbsticks – The thumbsticks are built for precision and comfort. They’re smaller and outlined with a knurled texture for better grip. Competitive gamers will be pleased to hear the sticks require 25 percent less force to move, allowing you to adjust your aim in a first-person shooter or execute a half-circle sweep in a fighting game faster and more accurately. The controller also uses advanced electronics that reduce thumbstick deadzone in the center.

Brand New D-Pad – The old Xbox 360 D-pad is replaced by a new design that pays homage to classic controllers and is architectured to deliver more precision and tactile feedback for gaming. The D-pad’s cross shape is honed to provide accurate cardinal direction input, sweeping movements and combinations – important factors for sports and fighting games, and other experiences.

Buttons, Buttons, Buttons – The A, B, X and Y buttons are lower to the controller with tighter spacing, making the transition between each one smoother. A new, three-step manufacturing process gives these buttons a more premium look, as if the letters on them are suspended in 3-D space. The size and placement of the Xbox button has also changed so the view and menu buttons are more accessible.

Seamless Connectivity – Each controller uses a combination of invisible reflective technology and LEDs to send a patterned infrared signal to your console and Kinect sensor. Not only does this make pairing the devices seamless, but it enables Kinect to associate the controller with whoever is holding it. This introduces innovative experiences, such as player switching, where a split screen display can swap positions on the TV if users change seats on the couch.

Low Power State – If you’re watching a movie or need to step away from the TV, the controller enters a low power state that conserves your battery. The moment you pick it up again, it will be ready for use without having to resynch with the console.

Refined for Comfort – The controller’s design is deliberately honed to the closest tenth of a millimeter to offer the most comfortable fit in users’ hands, and was tested extensively by a broader age group than ever before to ensure it is optimized for as many people as possible. According to the team’s research, this improves gameplay performance and allows comfortable gaming for longer periods of time.

Angled Triggers and Bumpers – The triggers and bumpers are carefully designed for performance and comfort. The specific angling allows for a natural fit for your fingers, and the triggers require a lighter pull, so squeezing it repeatedly is an easier and more precise action.

Internal Battery Cavity –The compartment that houses AA batteries is built into the interior of the controller, providing more room at the bottom for your fingers to grip. Another convenient improvement is that the controller is both wireless and a wired– simply plug it into your console with a mini USB cable and the connection automatically switches to preserve battery life.

So you must be the resident xbox controller salesman... almost worst than a used car salesman ./

NumOnePS3FanBoy3950d ago

What I find funny is that a lot of the xbox players emphasize "triggers... trigger. trig" because they only play shooters. It just goes to show that when they think the xbox controller is "superior" they are deluded by playing subpar games like COD

JsonHenry3950d ago

I honestly think that the xbox controller of THIS gen is more comfortable. I know it comes down to personal taste when judging ergonomics though. My brother has the same size hands as I do and he prefers the PS3 controller. However I have noticed that if I play with any controller (including my logitech PC gamepad) I get used them fairly quickly and "comfort" is an after thought because I forget I am even holding a gamepad while playing. Which I guess is a good thing.

Launch ps3 controllers still hold a charge. Guess how many battery packs I had to buy for my X box before I gave up and just leave them plugged in to the usb charger. Yes my wireless X box controllers are now wired because after buying a fourth battery pack I said screw it.
If you don't play your X box for a month or two and the controller doesn't get charged say bye to your battery.

With that said all these comments are irrelevant as is this article. Its trying to apply last Gen to next. People who have had time with each controller at e3 favored the new dual shock. Im mostly happy about X box lowering it's dead zone and increasing responsiveness which was my main problem with the original. Until I have tried both I'll reserve my judgement.

Xbox's Preservation Step Sets A Much-Needed Example, Especially For Nintendo

Hanzla from eXputer inquires: "If Xbox can care about preserving its games and legacy, what exactly is wrong with Nintendo, trying to kill game preservation single-handedly?"

purple1012d ago

Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”

Or how about removing 360 games
From the store
, download them now or else, and, better hope to god that save data doesn’t corrupt, or it’s lost for ever

Nice one ☝️

Zeref2d ago

It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.

DarXyde1d 23h ago

Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.

1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.

2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.

I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.

Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.

PhillyDonJawn1d 23h ago (Edited 1d 23h ago )

@DarX never speak on Xbox again. You lost all credibility with your internet connection comment. Smh you have 0 clue and misinformed yet speaking on something you don't no squat about.

Einhander19721d 22h ago

What has Sony done exactly? You guys keep deflecting to Sony but I am not actually seeing any results, and ai am certain nothing that you can come up with even comes close to what Microsoft has done and what they have tried and failed to do, like tie all your disks to your account on xbone.

Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.

And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.

MrBaskerville1d 21h ago

Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.

With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.

shinoff21831d 13h ago

Zeref

So killing off physical media is trying what exactly. Ms don't really give a fk if you think they do your kidding yourself.

Profchaos1d 12h ago

They are not trying this team is established for forward compatability the team is. It interested in preserving Xbox or 360 games.

isarai2d ago

Is that why Hellblade 2 is digital only?

Zeref2d ago

Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.

MrNinosan2d ago

Guess you're trolling, but if you actually think that's how it works, I'd recommend buying some braincells.

mkis0071d 4h ago (Edited 1d 4h ago )

Volitile vs nonvolitile data. A disc will not corrupt either. A drive can be corrupted.

Einhander19722d ago

This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.

No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.

Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.

Anyone remember xblig which Microsoft removed their whole 360 indie section removing hundreds of games from people?

Zeref2d ago

Do you know you can put your games on an external and preserve them that way? There are no benefits to discs. ZERO. Idk why some of you are still obsessed with them.

DarXyde1d 23h ago

Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.

If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.

Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.

But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.

Einhander19721d 23h ago

That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.

Einhander19721d 23h ago

Anyone remember games for windows live.

I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.

BehindTheRows1d 22h ago (Edited 1d 22h ago )

I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.

Zeref1d 21h ago (Edited 1d 21h ago )

You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.

Chevalier1d 20h ago

"You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership."

Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.

Tacoboto1d 21h ago

"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."

Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.

You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.

shinoff21831d 13h ago

Yay steam

Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.

Tacoboto1d 11h ago

How do Sony and Nintendo feel about these discs from 2001-2013?

Don't be stupid, you know Xbox is the best at this today.

Nobody wants this. Sales or the lack of it in the case of XBOX is very telling. I wonder how the adorably all digital series X will fare. Adorably dismal perhaps?

crazyCoconuts1d 22h ago

Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.

Xeofate1d 18h ago (Edited 1d 18h ago )

That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.

Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.

Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.

crazyCoconuts23h ago

The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point

FinalFantasyFanatic1d 7h ago

I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.

Is Driver (PS1) Still Worth Playing in 2024?

"Driver was a technical achievement for PS1, a pioneer in cinematic gaming, and an often brutal challenge - TechStomper asks if its brand of 70s car chase antics still holds up."

PrimeVinister2d ago

The driving holds up, most of everything else does not.

PrimeVinister2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

@Shane Kim

Well, I mean the driving physics hold up. The draw distance, police AI, visuals in general etc do not

Cacabunga2d ago

One of my all time favorites on PS1. I spent a summer vacation playing this was so good

isarai2d ago

Sadly youd be hard pressed to find any driving game with better physics these days. But the draw distance really kills it for me

PrimeVinister2d ago

The physics hold up ridiculously well. And the draw distance is a real hurdle at first.

__y2jb2d ago (Edited 2d ago )

Nonsense. The physics in any modern game or any 360 game is light years beyond Driver.

Dandizzle2d ago

This game is hard, you will fail and quit

PrimeVinister2d ago

But you will get there eventually... maybe

jznrpg2d ago

Stop with is it worth it articles. If you want to play a game play the damn game!

anast2d ago

I loved this game awhile back.

Barlos2d ago

Yeah but is it worth reading pointless articles?

__y2jb2d ago

It wasn’t worth playing in the 90’s.

Espangerish2d ago

My thoughts exactly. I bought it at release for full price and got frustrated and bored with it very quickly.

Terry_B4d ago

Well..you can play it completely offline at least ^^

PrimeVinister4d ago

Something we really miss, just turning on the console and having the game start without signing into stuff

Terry_B4d ago

Fully agreed. That and Splitscreen Modes for Racing games.

PrimeVinister4d ago

@Terry_B I miss having people to splitscreen with, but I can't blame anyone for that :-(

Cacabunga4d ago

Not too late.. we can still change that.

PrimeVinister4d ago

@Cacabunga I will let you in, see ya soon compadre :-P

MrBaskerville3d ago

@Terry_B
GT7 actually has 4 player splitscreen. Which is wild in this day and age.

Good news is that Sony released a final update to Gran Turismo Sport to allow it to function offline. Expecting the same for GT7 at some point in the future.

PrimeVinister4d ago

That is great news, I really liked Sport even if many others did not :-/

Chocoburger4d ago

I'm not big into sim racing, but I got sucked into the hype for this one from magazines back then. I just played arcade mode and that was enough for me to feel like I got my money's worth.

Yeah, it's definitely worth playing today. GT 2 has a few interesting fan made graphical mods when played on an emulator as well.

PrimeVinister4d ago

The arcade mode is underrated, it's a great alternative mode and you can even unlock GT HiFi with it.

Fonsecap4d ago

Cars back then had much more personality then those we see today. Modern cars all about the led lights and the tablet size screens and they all seem alike, back then they could be simpler in design but had tons more personality.

PrimeVinister4d ago

That is something a few people have pointed out - that cars all look the same now. I have to agree that a lot of new vehicles lack personality.

fsfsxii4d ago

You guys are so anti-fun its depressing, like who tf cares about personality of objects like wtf? Just learn to enjoy stuff as is.

PrimeVinister4d ago

It's hardly anti-fun to remark that some objects look nicer than others.

And everyone has their favourite era of cars, I sincerely doubt many will pick the 2020s a few decades from now.

Fonsecap4d ago

Dude, like wft cares about personality of objects? What about art? Paintings are objects and they're considered good or bad if they show or lack personality so I ask, wtf are you talking about? Cars are also considered pieces of art, vintage cars, classic cars, classic bikes and so on. Artists are appreciated by the objects they craft, blacksmiths, painters, engineers, designers, so wtf cares about personality of objects indeed... ( Sorry for my English, it's not my native language)

MrBaskerville3d ago

Talking about cars is fun if you are a car enthusiast. Just saying.

ApocalypseShadow4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

That Corvette Stingray to this day is one of the most ferocious whips ever driven. Overpowered against other cars yes. But to drive it and be that close to losing control, but being in command around those curves, just can't be duplicated.

HiFi mode is also something I miss. There should be a mode in today's GT where it's Mano o Mano and the detail and resolution jump full throttle. In today's games, Max Ray Tracing and lighting and textures to make it look even more real..

PrimeVinister4d ago

A modern HiFi mode would be really cool! It would be really interesting to see how real they could go by stripping it all way back.

And Stingray is a solid choice 👌

TiredGamer4d ago

HiFi mode in GT1 was only a stripped down 60 fps mode for one track. Should have been called "Performance Mode" or "High Frame Rate" mode.

PrimeVinister4d ago

@TiredGamer it was only three tracks, but it was still cool

Petebloodyonion4d ago

Not according to Former Playstation president Jim Ryan for he told Time that he doesn't see why anyone would play old games given the advancements in fidelity achieved today.

https://time.com/4804768/pl...

PrimeVinister4d ago

I don't agree with him, but he had a few good points.
