Your Feedback Matters – Update on Xbox One

Don Mattrick: You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc. The ability to lend, share, and resell these games at your discretion is of incredible importance to you. Also important to you is the freedom to play offline, for any length of time, anywhere in the world.

So, today I am announcing the following changes to Xbox One and how you can play, share, lend, and resell your games exactly as you do today on Xbox 360. Here is what that means:

Power to everyone who had a voice.
except to those who were prepared to just accept it and buy it anyway.

now lets get back to what's important. games.

I look forward to what the new ps4 and xb1 have to offer.

edit: i liked the benefits of the family share plan and hope that part of their policy isnt affected.

malokevi3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

I preferred the console as they announced it. I hope this has no impact on family plan, Cloud implementation, or Kinect integration... because that would piss me off.

I am waiting for answers on these things. Desperately.

I would hate to see them axe awesome features because of a group of people complained endlessly.

Backpedal or not the end result is a plus. Will it end the negativity, NO.

Outside_ofthe_Box3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

So much for DRM is the future. This is evidence that WE the consumer can dictate what WE want. Never just blindly accept and defend anything. Thank you Microsoft for finally seeing the light.

@malokevi

***" I hope this has no impact on family plan, Cloud implementation, or Kinect integration"***

The family share will most likely be tossed. I see no reason why the Cloud or Kinect should be axed though, those could work without the previous restrictions implemented regardless.

Blacktric3955d ago

It still costs 100 dollars more and still has mandatory Kinect requirement though.

"I preferred the console as they announced it."

Ahahahaha oh wow...

if true, looks like n4g is going to need something new to hate.. i already know RAM!!

it was obvious that this was going to happen. after seeing the pendulum shift with pre-orders because of this, there was no way they could continue.

@dartv72 have a bubble

BlackTar1873955d ago

good for gamers sad for M$ they completely lied to everyone and preached how it was a must and that its the future and yadaddadadad and now this role reversal. 2 days ago they said they were going to stick to their model.

sorry.

rela82me3955d ago

This isn't the most current information released by Microsoft, that can be found here http://news.xbox.com/2013/0...

"An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.
"

Godmars2903955d ago

@darthv72:
Sorry, but its not over yet.

If the rumor is true as I understand it, XBO will still need to connect to the internet at least once. For many that's going to be one time too many.

And can only wonder what this is going to do to the OS(s) since they're going to have to almost rewrite them from the beginning.

And Still the PS4 is going to be the better deal in regards to price and power. Live TV is the only thing XBO has going. That and a few more exclusives.

DirtyLary3955d ago

Sony dictates what we want.

Get it right.

thechosenone3955d ago

They got their hand smacked and now they're reverting back to their old policies. lmao! The biggest fail in gaming history brought to you buy MS and the Xbone. DRM is dead! Let that be a lesson to the gaming industry.

Still, $100 more for an inferior device who needs Kinect all the time

NatureOfLogic3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

I told people that MS and publishers NEEDED Sony on board to succeed. MS tried one last trick at E3, games and exclusive deals with some publishers. It seems they failed, now they're trying to patch up the bleeding. Is it too late is yet to be determined. Some gamers have lost confidence in them, rightfully so. They lied and lied, but I'm happy they changed it even with some blind followers.

Edit: Now MS will have this Image of being deceitful and evil. I'm sure they'll have to pay Sony for playing games on the disc, also what about hardware/software changes? delays?

BattleAxe3955d ago

That's great that they're changing their policies, but it doesn't change Microsoft's original intent. It's almost like if someone said that they wanted to beat you up, but then they learned that you were going to call the cops, and so now they turn around and say that they aren't going to beat you up because they will get into trouble. Why people support companies like this, I'll never understand.

darthv723955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

this has something to do with gamestop and the preorder situation. GS stopped taking preorders because this announcement was coming out.

a change of plans on the part of Ms would have to be sent out to retailers to inform them of the change.

Gamestop being one of the biggest retailers of new/used games probably got word of the change and stopped taking preorders.

Chances are those will open back up.

edit: no more family share plan = booooooo
but i can live with that. I wonder if they are contemplating changing the price as well?

FITgamer3955d ago

@darth it looks like the family plan is no longer a feature. "These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray."

zeeshan3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

credit also goes to Sony for putting immense pressure.

longcat3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

probably had more to do with it being otherwise considered as an unethical surveillance device....and soon to be illegal

4Sh0w3955d ago

So no more game sharing? If so man I think they missed a golden opportunity everyone I talked to liked that better than used game drm.

Mainsqueeze3955d ago

Def going to pre order this today lol gonna have both ps4 and xbone! Way to speak up gamers and way to finally listen Microsoft.

dedicatedtogamers3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

FINALLY! Glad to see Microsoft listened, although it appears you still need to go online - once - to register the game.

"After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again."

It also means no online game sharing, no library streaming, no "play your library anywhere", stuff, no 10-person Family Plan, nothing like that. And Kinect is still required, which is a bummer.

Still, a huge victory for gamers, a huge blessing to Xbox fans who wanted to continue with their chosen brand, and (hopefully) a show of humility from Microsoft.

gaffyh3955d ago

You're welcome Xbox fans, we just saved your system from being completely annihilated.

silenius3955d ago

FINALLY!!!

WE WHERE HEARD AND WE WON !!! :D

Kudos to each and every one of us for speaking our minds!!!

sikbeta3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

Really greats news and really smart move, in Nov when the console launch, people will forget about the whole issue and all DRM-problem will be forgotten!

YEAH!!!

ainsz3955d ago

It's very nice to see that the consumer can still have an influence over a multi billion giant like Microsoft. Of course this was also a reaction to Sony's plans. But 'the customer is always right' still holds true.

JokesOnYou3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

This is stupid....yeah I complained but that was before I knew about game sharing, now with this reversal surely that means game sharing is dead. Thats stupid because it was a great option. So what do I do?..go back and complain for them to go ahead with drm, which obviously isnt going to happen. I think micro blew it on this decision listening to the whiners including me but it wasnt my fault since I originally thought it was full stop drm. Preorders were not behind, Amazon best seller rank #1 even with drm and xbox fans were getting excited. This pisses me off! All so we can wait for every damm person on planet earth to get internet, dumb*sses should of just ran a detailed survey among actual xbox live gold/silve t users asking which one we preferred of the two policies carefully outlining HOW each one worked. I bet my next paycheck game sharing would have won by a mile. F-ing micro is stupid!

HammadTheBeast3955d ago

Kinect still required mandatory.

loulou3955d ago

i sense a disturbance in the force.. it is like a million sony fanboys assploded!!

guitarded773955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

AWESOME!!! I'm so glad they listened. It just goes to show that if we stand up for something, things can change... even if it is just a first-world problem. I'm still pissed about how smug they were initially, but I may buy and XBOX One now eventually.

But I still don't trust them. We all know what they tried to do. This should have been the policy in the first place. Also, GameStop may have had a big hand in it. They remover XBOX One from pre-orders... that could have been the tipping point.

SilentNegotiator3955d ago

WHHOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOO!

Next on the agenda: Get rid of required Kinect, have bundles without Kinect included at $100 less.

SilentNegotiator3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

"I preferred the console as they announced it. I hope this has no impact on family plan"

Imagine how gamers would form 10 person share groups. That probably would have had worse impact on their sales than used games.

@loulou

I can't believe you fanboys still think that Playstation gamers are hypocrites over this situation. First of all, look at the massive campaign performed to keep DRM away from PS4. Then, look at this comment section; everyone is ecstatic!

thechosenone3955d ago

I would never support a company that tried to push the BS that MS did....plus you never know what they might try to pull down the line. Sorry but they lost my trust. Also the games they showed off were extremely lame I'm not interested at all.

PS4 hardware is more powerful Sony has the best exclusives on any platform, PS+ and all the other little things that Sony is offering makes it a far superior product.

MestreRothN4G3955d ago

Even though we should be prepared for obvious hidden restrictions. The signal was very clear.

pompombrum3955d ago

Now offer a non kinect bundle for the same price as a PS4 and they'll have another preorder.

komp3955d ago

@loulou + 4m ago
"i sense a disturbance in the force.. it is like a million sony fanboys assploded!! "

I don't think so. I would say most of us SONY fans are thankful for the situation being resolved, finally. It means that going forward the awful DRM on consoles will not blight anyone due to this turn of events.

We all win.

JoySticksFTW3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

I get it, but let's savor this sweet sweet victory for now.

Tomorrow, we'll start in on MS over that price >:)

Congrats gamers!

Screw you, apologists

DragonKnight3955d ago

*clears throat* Ahem..... LMFAO! What happened to "The PS4 isn't a threat" or "The PS4 isn't going to make us change anything" or "We're not changing the DRM?"

This has to be because of the Jimmy Fallon show. It sure as hell isn't because of "the community." This is the same company that didn't give a damn about the community when they tried to pull this garbage. But once they heard the audience on the Jimmy Fallon show applauding what Sony was doing, they were like "oh sh*t the casual mainstream audience likes it too" and they changed the Xbox One to the Xbox One Eighty.

Microsoft are hilarious.

Gotta say though, congratulations to the Xbox brand's fans. This is a win for you guys today. Even if MS showed nothing but contempt for the core audience up until this point, you had to have been heard on some level.

Now then, I can't wait to see the shills backpeddle and pat themselves on the back at the same time for loving the DRM and now being happy that it's gone. Oh the hilarity. I would so love it if I could tag some members in this post.

Jessika_S3955d ago

I for one was ok, with what they had going the Idea for sharing games was interesting to me at least and some of my family and friends. Do I think this is great yes but you have to think that the infrastructure is there for them to turn it back on if they wish but then again Sony probably could as well. For today I guess it is a win for those who wanted this.

SilentNegotiator3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

"Preorders were not behind, Amazon best seller rank #1 even with drm and xbox fans were getting excited. This pisses me off! "

Uhhh, are you not aware that the Ps4 had about 7 places in the top 20 and Gamestop reports were saying Ps4 was ahead by a massive amount?

Xbox preorders were absolutely behind.

SecondSon3955d ago

Congratulations Gamers!
We have shown some of the biggest industries that they are nothing without us and that as a group we will always be stronger than them!

Gamers have really united over the last couple of weeks and I respect every person who stood up against this attempt to step over the consumers!

However I do think who ever preordered the Xbox One before this announcement does not deserve to benefit from our boycott! Whilst Xbox fans decided they wouldn't be buying into MS game others blindly went ahead and supported some of the most ridiculous business practises we have seen in quite a while!

If you have already preordered don't ever play your console if you happen to loose connection for 24 hours! You don't deserve to!

indubitably3955d ago

The previous method of only using game discs as installs benefited me way more than the changes do now. It wasn't just accepting it, it was buying what benefits you most. I never bought used games or sold my games so I did not care about that at all. I also always have an internet connection so that isn't a worry for me either.

Why o why3955d ago

Jokes, this doesnt necessarily mean game sharing is dead EVEN THOUGHT I didn't believe it was going to be like what some of you guys thought it was gonna be like anyway. It will be the same as ps plus maybe. Who knows. Well done though..pissed it turns out to be a bitter sweet moment.

Dee_913955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

WE DID IT !!!!!!
hell yea
I thought they would have to change some hardware and that would push the date back but I guess not.
This is awesome.Forza Titan fall ryse here I come :)
MSFT knew they wouldnt last long with those policies, no matter how often they tried to spin it

Winter47th3955d ago

Good day, but is the damage already done?

MizTv3955d ago

Lol still won't get one

Winter47th3955d ago

We have Sony to thank for this.

SonyPS3603955d ago

Very well said.

Now all Microsoft needs to do is give us free multiplayer, and it'll be doing at least one thing the Ps4 isn't.

But expecting not to pay for something from Microsoft is like expecting it to rain giraffes tomorrow.

ShinMaster3955d ago

It's great that they've made it less restrictive when it comes to online and DRM. But there is still the issue of being less powerful and more expensive and not being supported in a lot of places. http://i.imgur.com/vfRwPu7....
Paying more for less? Some people must REALLY like Halo that much.

SuperLupe3955d ago

Wow ... So we get the XOne a console with a better lineup of game o far the the PS4 with no DRM and no 24h check in : M-E-G-A-T-O-N.

Now just cut the price to 399 and its ON !!

Bigpappy3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

I hate this plan. M$ will hear from me. I want Real Xbox owners to contact M$ and let them know, that we prefer the plan that would allow us to share our digital games with family members. I prefer that over selling my games at a huge lost and buying used games at a $5 savings any day. At least this is the way it should work in the US. For people in the rest of the world who don't have reliable internet, they can keep that disk based system.

I plan on buy 90% of my games digitally. I would like to share and trade those games. I don't have time to be running to the store only to find they are sold out or only got for pre-orders.

I we keep listing to these right wing nosy people, we will never advance. We will stay in the 1940's. They always think someone is the spying on them and out to get them. What are these people really trying to high anyway. If the gov want to see me nail my wife, they are welcome to watch and see how its done. make sure you capture my butt in 1080p.

But seriously,: this is disappointing and will cost me a lot of money. My Xbox was always connected from day one and I have never had the desire to buy stolen games.

Please stick to your guns M$.

Now I am seriously thinking about leaving this gaming crap to the loud and obnoxious.

I think what they really ended up doing here is pissing off everyone now. Xbox was still seeing strong support, because some of us understood the benefits that came with sharing digital content. Now I have to run to the store and buy multiple copies of every good darn game because of a bunch of mindless sheep.

I don't know why people feel so proud of being lead around. You let a few anti-Microsoft nutts convince you that M$ is conspiring with the Gov to get you. You let them tell you that this is a political fight for you rights. All this is about, is rather you want to be able to download and share your games securely, or if you want to continue running to the store and coming back home to swap disk.

Here is the kicker. Many of you will realize soon after you buy your consoles, that you are buying lost of games digitally for the convenience of it, then you can't do anything with them. Can't lend, trade, sell, share... nothing. Enjoy your f'ing victory!

thethiny3955d ago

I actually , accepted the DRM , I thought it would be better to have your Library anywhere , and the ability to share your games with 10 friends at the same time. I also loved the idea of reselling.
But I guess , people wanted it this way , so I must accept that fate.

VersaVulture893955d ago

No one seems to understand that Kinect is NOT required for games... It must be connected, but that's more for the voice commands and navigation on the dashboard. For games, a majority of them are all controller based. Games like Ryse, Dead Rising 3, Fifa 14, Forza Motorsport 5 and Crimson Dragon all support Kinect and don't require it.

The only games that NEED Kinect are games like Kinect Sports Rivals and Fantasia: Music Evolved. Plus Kinect CAN BE turned off... It just needs to be connected. That's not a huge deal at all.

TOSgamer3955d ago

Xbox idiots complaining about the removal of drm just makes me want to slap someone. Your system of choice was gonna get smoked. Xbox one number one at Amazon? Its because Amazon was forcing about 5 different bundles for the ps4 to get one on launch day. Of course the ONLY choice for Xbox One was outselling any one of the 5 choices for ps4. Xbox got themselves back in the game with this reversal and the morons are complaining about it. lol

DragonKnight3955d ago

Wow. There are people that actually wanted the DRM. Incredible.

Conzul3955d ago

Great news!

We have staved off a repulsive future for a little longer!

Still mandatory KINECT, though. I refuse to purchase any piece of technology that won't work unless it's allowed to WATCH ME.

MikeMyers3955d ago

"Wow. There are people that actually wanted the DRM. Incredible."

So you've never bought anything off the Playstation Store?

nosferatuzodd3955d ago

oh Now feed back matters.

I still don't trust them if it wasn't for Sony everybody would be drinking drm for breakfast lunch and dinner right now later on when every one forget because of short memory DRM DRM ha ha ha we got you now you already buy the lie

dantesparda3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

They (MS) crumbled quicker than i thought. But this is a good day for gamers everywhere. Now lower the price to $350 and get rid of that stupid fvcking camera, you're system is inferior and shouldnt cost the same as the PS4. Now let the back pedaling begin!

Ares84HU3955d ago

I'm very happy about this!! Now the Xbox One has a fighting chance and there could be some good competition again.

RyuCloudStrife3955d ago

the Xbox one is still a surveillance device...

kparks3955d ago

If u ask me too little too late they got up there spouting the DRM is the future BS like gamers are morons then they refuse to change it then only after the xbox one is getting blown away by the ps4 pre-orders these money hungry pigs come out and say woops u guys are right and were listening.. Well i hope so because if u weren't xbox would be dead!

Dmagic3955d ago

Preorders were not behind, Amazon best seller rank #1 even with drm and xbox fans were getting excited. its number one because ps4 ran out of systems to sell dummy it is a top "sellers" list if you cant sell anymore that week then you drop

MysticStrummer3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

@ MikeMyers - "So you've never bought anything off the Playstation Store?"

Of course, because that's the only option with some titles. I prefer a physical copy any day of the week.

You guys who wanted DRM need to get it through your heads that you're the minority. Either that, or organize a movement of your own and see if you can get MS to change their minds again. Such a movement would fail, but it would be amusing to watch you try.

papashango3955d ago

I'm amazed people would rather say thank sony then just be proud of themselves as a consumer.

The people spoke and M$ finally got their heads out their rear end and listened.

This is a win for the consumer. Don't let anybody give another corporation the credit here.

Thomper3955d ago

And now the family plan is dead...

it goes to show that if we all have one voice and go for waht we believe in it works.

next is DLC ??

wonder if EA bring back there online passes lol.

i wonder what happens to the library sharing?
before it could be shared accross consoles in house, that feature must be gone also.

well least u can do one thing they promised(watch your already paid for tv on it)

although im getting ps4,i will 95% chance i will get a xbone a couple months after launch.

i hope they do free games like on ps+ too.

Gamer19823955d ago

It is a great day for xbox gamers but don't be fooled into thinking this was down to gamers this is down to press. Ms has not been listening to gamers for years now and we found that out at E3. After Jimmy Fallon show showing off yet again Xbox cannot do used games and play offline for an infinite amount of time they changed the xbox DRM. But lets not knock the fact its done. It's still a long way to go though as PS4 is still cheaper and Kinect is still forced down your throat. Your paying that extra $100 for Kinect whether you want it or not. Without Kinect they could have probably released the console at $349.

BallsEye3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

It is great news indeed! I do hope that they won't drop the family sharing because of it.. I really liked the idea ;( was ready to abuse the crap out of it. Anyway, fanboys will find a new reason to say xbxo one sucks...N4G! ;]

princejb1343955d ago

That's awesome for the fans
Wouldn't be surprised though if down the line they add their drm restrictions again later in the xbone life cycle

EVILDEAD3603955d ago

Bye Bye family-sharing, and hello disc-swapping :(

Atomicjuicer3955d ago

If they remove kinect requirement and drop the price I might get one.

For now the ps4 still reigns.

Fair play to Microsoft for reversing though - that must have been awkward internally!

Cueil3955d ago

I think there was pressure inside of Xbox division this whole time and fans were the last straw... surprised some people are not getting the boot

Godmars2903955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

No. Launch day is going to be - likely horrible actually.

MS is now - currently - committed to a November release and have practically announced that they need to rewrite the OS of their console to remove its DRM in its current state. And that console has three OSs.

And again, this is MS: a software company which despite its success is only known for releasing buggy software. Of needed ages to patch it. Nevermind that at E3 they didn't have the confidence to even run demos on dev kits. Didn't even use Windows 8, and XBO uses W8.

Chances are if you're into train wrecks, you're going to need more popcorn...

Edit:
I don't mean to sound evil much less fanboyish, its just that with MS being so arrogant and oblivious to something anyone with an honest lick of sense could see as bad at the very first whispering of rumor, I can only see a speeding locomotive headed towards a very broken down bridge.

FragMnTagM3955d ago

@battletorn

Why would you need to swap discs?

I am sure they are using Blu Ray for games since it plays blu ray now.

Other than playing a different disc based game, then the one you have in the tray you shouldn't have to swap discs.

If you download your games instead of buying disc, then you will never have to swap anything. You just won't be able to resell it is all.

sikbeta3955d ago

Not good... AWESOME! MS listened and now everything is good in the world of gaming, how it should have been from the start :D

BattleTorn3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

@FragMnTagM

One of the "scenarios [they] previously announced" was that you wouldn't have to re-insert a game after the intial install.. that's now undone.

PFFT3955d ago

Yep NO DISK SWAPPING!!
XBO adopted the Blu-Ray drive as well!

Gameatholon3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

Congratulations to Microsoft, you have successfully alienated an entire population of gamers with your choices these last couple of weeks.

" I really have to say that the Xbox One does not even have a vision anymore. They have effectively gone back on all the features that made their console "future proof", "revolutionary" and "over-delivering on value" as they claimed.

So what is the vision for the console now? And no, " we have removed the DRM" is not a vision."

I wouldnt get to excited yet. wtf does this even mean? LOL Does not have to be always connected but does required a connection to the internet... so they will make it a Internet connection check every Week, or 2 weeks. Still sucks

Q: Does Xbox One require an “always on” Internet connection?
A: No, it does not have to be always connected, but Xbox One does require a connection to the Internet. We’re designing Xbox One to be your all-in-one entertainment system that is connected to the cloud and always ready. We are also designing it so you can play games and watch Blu-ray movies and live TV if you lose your connection.

Virtual_Reality3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

http://www.giantbomb.com/ar...

Anonymous sources are saying to Giant Bomb all that.

http://www.ign.com/articles...

No more always online requirement
The console no longer has to check in every 24 hours
All game discs will work on Xbox One as they do on Xbox 360
An Internet connection is only required when initially setting up the console
All downloaded games will function the same when online or offline
No additional restrictions on trading games or loaning discs
Region locks have been dropped

BattleAxe3955d ago

Just seems like more confusion to me.

SKullDugger3955d ago

The full story is on IGN no used game fees and will only need a internet connection for the initial set up after that no 24 hr check will be needed..

famoussasjohn3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

Virtual_Reality - I see nothing about region locks being removed. Nor am I seeing the 24 hour check being removed or increased. It was never "always online", it was "Online within the last 24 hours in order to play games".

Just a bunch of "alleged" details. I'll wait for Microsoft to come and say this. I'd be truly shocked if even half of those were happening.

final edit : wow..they really did. Congrats Microsoft. This is a step in the right direction. I applaud them of dropping their arrogance and siding with the consumers with this one. Still region locked.

Xbox supporters, please comment here. Please outline again for us, all the "benefits" of DRM that we're now losing out on lol.

It's a decent change, but nothing at all to be proud of. This is how it should've been in the first place, don't congratulate Microsoft for backing out after seeing the hate.

And this proves all that BS the execs were spewing for the past 2 weeks.

bicfitness3955d ago

jcnba283955d ago

Yet you people have no problem praising Sony for keeping things the same way since consoles existed? Flip flopping much?

Heartnet3955d ago

It allows developers 100% gurrenteed that the player is online thus can develop things for that.. Such as Cloud computing and offloading thigns to MS servers.... now they cant do that as u can be offline and they have to prepare as such..

NextGen24Gamer3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

I need to hear more about what is going on! I'm not happy if they are changing the family share. I was really excited about that.

I'm also not happy in how this may or may not help with the cloud for games. Developers won't invest if they aren't guaranteed a large user base is always connected.

I loved the DRM and what comes with always being online.

I hope we get more info on this.

Not happy at all with the initial news!

Though it should make it easier for the gamers who were anti DRM to jump in and not miss out on the next gen Xbox Only Titles!

I never really cared about sales...I just wanted quality and next gen features. More info needed for sure!

If it's true, Pre orders should sky rocket, though Xbox One is still #1 on Amazon in regards to pre orders!

What Microsoft didn't understand is that though we aren't as loud as the sony loud mouths, we talk with our wallets and many of us were and hopefully are still excited about those next gen features.

More info needed...Dang it!

I hope they keep Kinnect as part of the system. That would be a horrible mistake if they didn't. Separate yourself from Sony... The same reason I wasn't hype about the ps4 could now happen with the xbox one. Don't just be a new system with better graphics...

Stay innovative and push the industry forward Microsoft!!!!!

jmc88883955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

Exactly.

How many people shilled for M$ saying...but you need all this.

Once again, power to the people, and those with brains and fortitude to call them out.

Good job everyone.

But the fight isn't over.

Now we need them to drop the mandatory Kinect connection.

Again Steam has shown that you can share without the barbaric restrictions. I wouldn't be surprised if catching wind of what Steam was doing was the last straw.

Because that kicked out their last legs.

CYCLEGAMER3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

I will respond...lol. If they are getting rid of the "share your games feature" I will be a little bummed out. Most of my gaming friends are in others states, and it would have been nice to give them full access to my library of games, without having to ship them the disc.

I am happy that things are going back to the way they should be, but damn that was a nice feature.

Well said Captain Qwark, I was planning to buy both systems and looking forward to the different experiences both systems were going to provide.

Captain Qwark 93955d ago

i think its retarded, i hope the features remain the same. i wanted discless playing, cloud gaming, etc. if they dropped those features to accommodate the sony drones and their loud ass mouths ill be annoyed. they could have just kept silent, pre orded and bought their ps4's and let those who wanted the x1 the way it was be. but instead no, they have to bash, and spread negative bs about a console they werent going to buy in the first place causing ms to retract their policies which could possibly make the x1 no different than an updated 360 and even more so like the ps4 which while its decent, really isnt bringing anything new to the table other than prettier graphics

DoesUs3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

@Elite

Oh you 8)

LOL, already flip flopping. Shill of the finest order.

It's the Sony "loud mouths" that have helped hugely in this as die hard MS supporters/shills have their heads stuck so far up MS @rse they choose be oblivious to anything else. People like you and GreenPowerz/POG make me sick.

bicfitness3955d ago

@ Elite Gamer. This is the yearly bestsellers list. Hate to burst your bubble:

Ps4 (Launch Day) #2
Xbone (Day One) #8

A little perspective for ya.

Bu bu bu how can we even play Titanfall now without teh power of the cloud??

loulou3955d ago Show
Why o why3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

Captain qwark blames this on sony drones

You, are quite ignorant to the facts that YOU are in a minority of people who wanted drm and microsoft don't care about the minority....they care about money. Well done ms fans who stood up to this crap. Well done. Like lou said above.......now us sony fans can start hating on ram and mandatory kinect....lmao

*fist pump*

http://www.elevenwarriors.c...

Lou, c'mon man. Just be happy. Some maybe annoyed for what reason I don't know but just savour the moment. Consumers made this happen. Common sense made this happen.

I also think there are some people who should be called out....the lapdog types that were trying to group and project that sony would do the same and how we're all gonna have drm before sony dropped the e3 bomb. Some were still doing it up to an hour ago. People aren't mad ms done a u turn, they're probably mad at the hypocrisy.

Personally I'm pleased with the 360 fans who expressed an annoyance and sent emails, signed petitions. I'm annoyed at the free lube dudes who wanted to defend ms's actions at every corner.

BattleTorn3955d ago

I'm upset that they backed down :(

"Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray."

We won't have the "family-sharing" - and back to swapping discs.

too bad, but I won't pretend that this isn't incredible news for all those you never supported it

HammadTheBeast3955d ago

Oh no. We're getting into the trenches now. This will be a long next few months....

torchic3955d ago

@elite24gamer

you are an absolute disgrace.

DigitalRaptor3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

@ Loulou

Why don't you do the same?

Stop with the presumptions. I'm very happy that most of the vile restrictions have been removed, and I'm happy for the people who wanted to get an Xbox One, but who's morals were strong.

This is good news. It doesn't mean I'm going to support the company that tried to control our ownership with restrictive DRM and forced online. The same company that still doesn't give a rats ass about the consumer, and only made this statement to protect their brand reputation and their market share and sales potential, against PS4.

People like you are only looking to start things. The Sony fans here are mocking the apologists and shills who tried to paint DRM and restrictions in a positive light - the ones who deserve it.

SonyPS3603955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

Everyone congratulated Sony just for NOT screwing customers, which I thought was silly. This is no different, in fact it's a cause for more celebration because it showed that the consumer does have a voice that will be listened to.

We still have a multiplayer fee from both consoles now, since Sony decided to slip that under the net while everyone was losing their shit over the announcements of no DRM, and we still have more disadvantages to owning and Xbox one instead of a Ps4.

Not much has changed about which will be a better gaming console (The Ps4 still is), but don't be so quick to side with Sony, because they are adding a restriction or two themselves, and annoyingly NO ONE is complaining and instead defending it.

nachokingp3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

Okay, here goes:

1) Persistent Game Library: being able to access your entire game library from anywhere because your console can authenticate to MS's servers on any system. This will be tied to your account FOREVER, even if your house burns down.

2) Family Share: Sharing your ENTIRE GAME LIBRARY with up to 10 people because your console can authenticate the authorization on their machine.

3) Diskless gaming: NEVER having to keep your games handy because they are installed on the drive and can be authorized for playback from MS's servers.

All those things are now GONE. Thanks @$$hats.

DigitalRaptor3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

@ Nachokingp

You along with every DRM and restriction-based supporters are a disgrace. Your 3 point list is garbage and I'll tell you why.

Number 1) and 3) are the same thing, pretty much.

1) Persistent Game Library: This is called, wait for it.. buying a game digitally. It's tied to you account forever, even if your house burns down. Why would you support the purchase of a disc that becomes useless once you've installed it?

2) Family sharing: This can be done, without the restrictions surrounding the console. It exists on PS3 with no problem - it used to be 5 devices, but due to publisher pressure, it's now 2. However, out of these 10 "family members", only 2 can be playing it at the same time, unless I'm wrong on that. So regardless, it's not that "sweet deal" that you thought it was going to be.

3) Diskless gaming: Again, it's called buying the game digitally. And to pour salt into your exposed wound, do you recall that NON-REMOVABLE 500GB HDD?? How many games do you think you will be able to install on there until there's no more space?

My god, some of you loyalists are so devoted to supporting anti-consumer practices, that you blind yourself to logic and what is the fundamental truth. Just accept that the worst parts of the Xbox One have been neutralised, or you're beyond lost here.

MysticStrummer3955d ago

@Elite24Gamer - Please, I'm begging you, please try to organize a movement to see how many people support DRM, and try to get MS to change their minds again.

It will be highly amusing.

insomnium23955d ago

LOL @ nacho

MS would've NEVER EVER allowed sharing of games between 10 people. NEVER EVER in a million years!

If Sony can't have 5 people sharing games how the hell would've MS managed to do it between 10? LOL even IF (and that's a big if) MS would've gone forward with this it would've taken them probably about 2 months and they would've been forced to change it. People always abuse stuff like this. happend with 5 people sharing on PS3, happened with other OS on PS3. People just love to screw and abuse these things so it's not going to fly.

BallsEye3955d ago

Family sharing. if 10 people buy 10 games each you can access 100 games , without restrictions except that 2 people can play same copy in same time on different consoles. I really wanted this feature..My buds are everywhere in the world and would love to share games with them without mailing the damn disc.

nachokingp3955d ago

@insomnium2, Microsoft had already announced that as a feature prior to changing its stance, so I'm not really sure what planet you're reading your news from, but on this one, you were wrong before you even started typing your reply.

@DigitalRaptor, Digital games couldn't be shared with people, at all, unless you bought a second copy and gifted it to them permanently. Having the ability to let my friends play a game I bought was a BIG deal to a lot of us and now we've lost it. It may not be important to YOU, but that doesn't mean that many of us aren't disappointed now. And the reason I am supporting discs that "becomes useless once you've installed it" is because I LIKE that I can install a game from disc and not have to download 50GB of data. Let's not forget, Xbox One is moving to blu-ray format, and game sizes are going to triple from what they are now, and even now some games require multiple discs. I don't want to have to wait hours and burn through my ISP's data cap just to play a game.

I just opened my last of us and found drm online pass bs. I ha e noticed this any many sony first party titles and ms has no drm in any of there first partg and was planning on keeping it thag way but somehow now ms is the bad guy leavjng it up to third party. Dont mattrr now noth conses have the same design now and I expect live and its reliability to win right there. As far as the cloud goes ms will simply require a interneg connection for those games. Its not brain surgery. Ioved ms digital shared plan and explained it on here many times but everyone made fun of me and downvoted me. Real nice group of gamers we have here on n4g / sarcastic.

bicfitness3955d ago

Its definitely a start. Now get the price down and cut out Kinect and we could have somewhat of a less hobbled race. As it is the hardware is still less powerful and $100 more expensive. Power can be overlooked with clever enough software, but the price disparity will kill MS more than anything else.

Are all the crazy Xbox fanboys defending "cloud magic" (how will that work, now that there is no more online required?) and "family sharing" (again, you can expect a modification to that policy now) going to pop their heads back into this thread, I wonder? Or will they just stay hiding? Console loyalty aside, the only people who defended MS' policies were either uneducated or shills.

darthv723955d ago

but keep the kinect. I like that if its in every box, it leaves no excuse for developers to treat it as an afterthought.

Ausbo3955d ago

Who cares about kinect always being connected. It comes in the box. Its better its connected cause then developers have it easy knowing eveveryone has one.

If you dont want to use it, dont use it. Simple as that. A price cut would be sweet though

Serg3955d ago

The XBox was never an "always online" box to begin with, so that cloud marketing BS they are spouting to lure in the technologically illiterate, is moot in any case.

All that was previously required was a 24 hour check in, for which you could've used a dial up modem. It was only there for DRM purposes.

Prophet-Gamer3955d ago

Very awesome news. If DRM and online checks are gone, I'll be buying both an X1 and PS4 this holiday season.

andibandit3955d ago

Love how you get disagrees for saying that.

I'll be getting both as well, simply because i love gaming.

PFFT3955d ago

Same here. XBO and PS4 for me.

I think MS finally realizes you can't force people into this kind of thing.

It is a seriously great day. For not only Xbox gamers, but for all gamers.

EDIT: More confirmed sources http://www.gametrailers.com...

http://127.0.0.1:1886/start...

http://www.ign.com/articles...

let me know if these links work or not.

IGN: "Microsoft has reportedly changed its policies regarding Xbox One’s internet requirement, used game restrictions and more. Contrary to the details announced earlier this month, anonymous sources now tell Giant Bomb that Xbox One will no longer require an internet connection or need to check in every 24 hours; instead, internet will only be required when initially setting up the console."

"Xbox One will allegedly also no longer restrict used games, and will instead allow discs to be exchanged in the same way they are on Xbox 360 with no additional restrictions for trade-ins or lending games to friends. The system is also said to no longer be region locked and all downloaded games will function the same way whether your console is connected or not."

A great day people...

If this is all true, I may just pick up a XB1 when Titan fall is released... It all still seems a bit fuzzy to me

AngelicIceDiamond3955d ago

Yeah, it should be classified as rumor. This is still shady even for MS. MS has every reason to "backpedal" but its MS, they are stubborn and egotistical. Take this with a huge grain of salt.

NateCole3955d ago

Thank God. Now game publishers and every console holders should realise by now that gamers rules.

What i want to hear now is them backpeddling on Kinetic needing to watch people all the time then i am good with MS.

I agree.
This is terrific news.

I applaud the interwebs. :)

HurtfulTimez3955d ago

Agreed, i just hope this is all true as i may finally purchase an xbone providing this is true, i hope they make kinect optional too - its a guarenteed buy for me in the future if they do that. hopefully more details and clarification will arrive.

Mr_Nuts3955d ago

Keep going people

Mandatory Kinect is next.....keep complaining, we've only jumped over one hurdle, still got the rest of the track to go.

nachokingp3955d ago

You do realize that by eliminating Kinect, you'd basically have to rewrite the entire OS that was planned and designed around it being an integral part of functionality, right? And that by eliminating it, you would essentially be dooming the console to be delayed for months, if not a full year, to completely rewrite the code? That's what you want, amiright?

Mr_Nuts3955d ago

@Nacho - Isn't that what people said about DRM.....look whats just happened

biRdy3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

They listened!
Gamers know best!

Anon19743955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

So you still need internet to setup the console though. That's still 33% of Americans that don't have access to high speed internet. I'm sure people could find ways around that by having someone setup a wi-fi spot with their phone or something to at least have the system setup, but this requirement is still a detriment to the system as most likely it'll still keep people without internet away. It's still a headache but at least a huge step in a reasonable direction. There's still the matter of price though compared to it's competition.

I think it's 100% the right thing for Microsoft to do though and my hat's off to them for listening to gamers (although, really what choice did they have given the backlash).

Besides, I hated the "Xbone" nickname. "Xbox One-Eighty" has a much nicer ring to it. :)

GameCents3955d ago

Jee wizz Debbie Downer. Can we have a moment?

Anon19743955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

I'd been partial to Xbox Juan.

Edit: @GameCents. Well come on. It's like "Yay, no more internet required....except for if you want to setup and activate your system." It's a good move, but it's not a silver bullet that suddenly solved the internet issue. It's not like people without internet are suddenly dancing in the streets.

...although without internet they probably don't know yet...

whoyouwit043955d ago

It doesnt matter if they announced this.Im sorry but all the crap they pulled and all of a sudden they decide where going to backpedal like that tells me that they did this because preorders where terrible, but mark my words now they will have some stipulation down the road witht the xboxone.A company doesnt just fold there crads like that withought some reason that we dont know about. They where also saying that MS did this to boost preorders as well so another sign that MS isnt to be trusted. If you guys go back to MS after all the shit they pulled and said then your only asking to get burned in the end.Give it time you will see.

DeathofSouls3955d ago

people are having trouble reading the letter due to high traffic, so here -----

Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience.

For us, the future comes in the form of Xbox One, a system designed to be the best place to play games this year and for many years to come. As is our heritage with Xbox, we designed a system that could take full advantage of advances in technology in order to deliver a breakthrough in game play and entertainment. We imagined a new set of benefits such as easier roaming, family sharing, and new ways to try and buy games. We believe in the benefits of a connected, digital future.

Since unveiling our plans for Xbox One, my team and I have heard directly from many of you, read your comments and listened to your feedback. I would like to take the opportunity today to thank you for your assistance in helping us to reshape the future of Xbox One.

You told us how much you loved the flexibility you have today with games delivered on disc.

•An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games – After a one-time system set-up with a new Xbox One, you can play any disc based game without ever connecting online again. There is no 24 hour connection requirement and you can take your Xbox One anywhere you want and play your games, just like on Xbox 360.

•Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today – There will be no limitations to using and sharing games, it will work just as it does today on Xbox 360.

In addition to buying a disc from a retailer, you can also download games from Xbox Live on day of release. If you choose to download your games, you will be able to play them offline just like you do today. Xbox One games will be playable on any Xbox One console -- there will be no regional restrictions.

These changes will impact some of the scenarios we previously announced for Xbox One. The sharing of games will work as it does today, you will simply share the disc. Downloaded titles cannot be shared or resold. Also, similar to today, playing disc based games will require that the disc be in the tray.

We appreciate your passion, support and willingness to challenge the assumptions of digital licensing and connectivity. While we believe that the majority of people will play games online and access the cloud for both games and entertainment, we will give consumers the choice of both physical and digital content. We have listened and we have heard loud and clear from your feedback that you want the best of both worlds.

Thank you again for your candid feedback. Our team remains committed to listening, taking feedback and delivering a great product for you later this year.

kickerz3955d ago

This is HUGE. Good work MS

3955d ago
kickerz3954d ago

That's what she said... Lol actually MS was thinking about the future which I was ready for but most of u guys weren't.

Death3955d ago

Unreal...

The ability to access your entire library without needing the disc in the tray was huge. Remote access to your entire library anywhere you were is a great feature. This is not a win for "gamers", this is ignorance screwing those that really wanted these features.

Salooh3955d ago

It's good compared to xbox live games but it's not when you compare it to the physical disc. The 10 family members can't use it at the same time. So it's almost the same thing but you can't sell it until now..

They should have made it a positive thing for X1 instead of removing it .

zme-ul3955d ago

bunch of morons at MS need to be axed .. ASAP!

fr0sty3955d ago

Congrats MS, after a nice price cut I may consider buying your box now.

360degrees3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

Although I feel this is of slight detriment for some of the more exciting and innovative features that Microsoft had originally planned for the Xbox One, in regards to the grand scheme of things this is truly fantastic to appease that rather small, specific audience demographic of gamer who had miniscule(nitpicking) issues with the previously proposed digital rights management/ 24 hour check in policy. Truly, this should only further serve to enhance the already incredible pre order sales that Microsoft has been receiving for the Xbox One.

fr0sty3955d ago

Those "innovative" features are already on PS3. Xbox One was going to let you have a list of 10 family members who you could share games with, but only one of them at a time can actually be playing one of your games. PSN already allows you to share your entire download list with any one of your friends. The only difference is that there isn't a waiting list of 9 other people, you have to deactivate the one friend's game before you can lend to another.

This isn't some new feature, they just put a bunch of PR spin onto existing policies and tried to take credit for innovating where they were actually just copying.

Funny thing is, Ps4 doesn't have any of that DRM, nor does PS3 or Vita, and all 3 allow you to share your download lists with your friends.

3955d ago
Bzone243955d ago

Disappointed

Family Sharing - Gone
Installing game and never needing to put it in the Xbox One again - Gone

People got what they wanted though. Wish there was a way to have some middle ground in this, but there isn't any that I can think of.

greenlantern28143955d ago

they could still keep those features for xbox live gold members.

Bzone243955d ago

I guess they could for the game installs. Leave the 24 check in, but if you don't check in online, you have to put the game disc in and leave it in when playing the game until you check in online.

The family sharing is going to be gone. That was the trade off for the drm.

fr0sty3955d ago

Sony already does it with PS3. PSN lets you share your entire download list with anyone you let sign in using your account. The only difference is, you must deactivate that one friend's copy before you can lend it to another. There isn't a waiting list of 9 other friends who can access that game. However, both you and the friend can play your copy at the same time, from your own PSN accounts in most cases.

There are ways to do it.

greenlantern28143955d ago

if this is true than great but Don Mattrick has been wrong/ misinformed several other times. but i hope it is true power to the consumer. again if this is true. which i hope it is now i might even pick one up. eventually. titanfall, dead rising 3 and even that game spark looked pretty good. i dont care about the tv crap, and dont want kinect but this will help them come back

greenlantern28143955d ago

FunkMacNasty3955d ago

Today should be declared a gamers Holiday. Gamers from all around the world stood up and made their voices heard, and made a change.

Gamer Day 6/19/2013

Just because of these policies I ended up buying a Playstation for the first time since the PS2. Thanks for listening MS because now I can continue my gaming legacy on Xbox One and PS4.

nachokingp3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

Actually, it's a terrible day for gamers. A whole bunch of crybabies got their way for all the wrong reasons. A few outlets were sharing incorrect information about Xbox One, and the misinformation spread like wildfire. Now, because everyone pissed and moaned, we are ALL losing on probably the most innovative feature of Xbox One that NOBODY was talking about, Family Share is now a thing of the past. Xbox One WAS able to sell used games, as they announced. The 24 hour connection was a minor check in that could have been done over a very slow internet connection, even over a wifi hotspot from your smartphone. Now we'll be required to use our disks offline, where we weren't before. Now we won't be able to share our entire game library with up to 10 of our friends. All because people DON'T READ THE ACTUAL INFORMATION but believe what other people are mistakenly saying. ARGH! MS was actually trying to innovate, way to suck gamers.

glopez3955d ago

Like the saying goes " if it ain't broke, don't fix it!" The way we play games has been the same way I've been doing it for 25 years. These first generation gamers make me sick to my stomach! Nothing about the xbone was innovative. Get over it kid.

YNWA963955d ago

It is broke, thats why the market is full of sequels... Too risky for new IP when there is no return guarantee....you want it all but only willing to borrow it or buy it cheap. This is the day the industry lost.... Well done babies...

How is a 70+ billion dollar industry broke? Think about that for a second. Want to know why there are to many sequels? No one can make a good game anymore. This generation of ADHD 15 y/o kids and below are to blame. Past generations had full games with great stories. If the graphics were good then that was a plus. Now its graphics and 60 fps. Complain to the pubs if they don't want to take risks. Hmmmm the masses spoke and Ms answered. Now guys like you are crying, and you call us babies. Lmao complain to Ms, maybe they'll back pedal again.

nachokingp3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

Umm, you clearly don't have a clue. First of all, the system was broken from the developers' point of view. A system only works if all parties involved agree that it works, but the existing system only works for gamers, not for developers, because they lose sales dollars through the used games market. And how can you possibly say there were no innovations on the Xbox One? Persistent game library across any console by just logging into Xbox Live, Family Share allowing you to share your ENTIRE GAME LIBRARY with 10 people, diskless gaming, all of those are HUGE innovations that are now lost because of douche nozzles that didn't "get it".

it's a great day for everyone who stood up and resisted all the crap.

It's shameful the way some people supported it. I would love to hear what they have to say now. Are they going to cry about how their family share is no longer going to work.

Aceman183955d ago

so they b***hed out? its good to see the consumers voice heard LOUDLY. great day for gamers, and a great day for CONSUMERS.

shinrock3955d ago

Great day for gamers and Gamestop. Bad day for Dev and pubs. Now the casual can walk right on in and take out the AAA market. Too bad GameStop don't make games.

This is amazing news....I can now Defend Purchasing a XboxOne Now....Before this it was extremely hard to see me purchasing the Xbox.

hkgamer3955d ago

This is actually bad news for me. I did like the direction MS going.

Don't care for used games and internet connection at my house is decent, so I would have prefered being able to install full games and share games with 9 other people.

hkgamer3955d ago

Sad day for me.
I actually like the DRM.
Install game onto Console.
Share games with family.

2 best features I wanted for any console

welcome to the world of PC gamer's Xbox users. PC gamers like myself get beat up here as being "whiny", or told to "shut up" when we voice our opinion for something we strongly disagree with.

Xbox gamers voiced their opinions against MS and have turned the tide, and i condemn them for it. that is how you get things done as a consumer.

im proud as a gamer you stood up and got MS to change their stupid policies for a console. cheers and game on everyone.

but as a industry as a whole if this would have went through All companies would have pushed the boundaries on what could be charged for and milked out of the customers pockets

nukeitall3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

Thanks gamers for crippling the Xbox One. I was looking forward to game sharing and all the new features.

If I wanted last-gen console with all the limitations of physical disc, I would have gotten PS4! You weren't happy with your console, you had to go f it up for other people too. Congratulations you win!

Thank you for f***ing it up for us others that was looking forward to genuinely new features. Game sharing would have been fantastic.

Now it is a gimped box!

I hope there is a small chance game sharing will happen again with digital downloads. I don't mind the 24-hour check-in on digital games.

hkgamer3955d ago

Not sure if you trolling or being sarcastic, but I agree with you.

MS just took 2 of the only reasons I would have bought an Xbone. Now it's just an over priced weaker PS4 with big brother watching you 24/7.

Game sharing would have been an amazing feature and would have saved me so much money.

DARK WITNESS3955d ago

the people who were not happy with it were fellow xbox gamers and fans. not eveyone likes taking it in the backside like you

BEASTIE-E3955d ago

Well now that you are forced to use "last-gen console with all the limitations of phsyical disc" are you going to get the ps4?? I bet your answer is no.. that's how full of s**t YOU are.. PS4

nukeitall3955d ago

I really don't understand this mentality of "if you disagree with me, you are wrong".

Fact of the matter is that what happened was the best for gamers, i.e. there were options depending on what you preferred.

Instead, we now lost that option and revert back to stone age physical discs. I'm saddened by this and hope MS will re-introduce this sooner rather than later.

It is a great day for gamers, but I'm still not spending my money on it. The PS4 is still the better machine, has a better line of games (including a few mmos I'm looking forward to playing), and it's cheaper. But to each their own.

Great for xbox fans. I'm still buying a PS4 though. It's still cheaper and has incredible exclusives.

2 Years ago Sony was going to implement DRM in PS4. MS agreed and adopted the same philosophy. At the MS reveal in May after announcing it to the world, MS took a huge PR hit and community backlash. Sony saw this and immediately changed gears for their E3 announcement. It wasn't until the end when Sony announced that they wont have everything MS got hammered for did they get anyone excited. Before that, their E3 showing was mediocre. Now that MS is doing it, people feel duped....WHY? here's the link for Sony wanting DRM

http://news.idealo.co.uk/ne...

I pre-ordered a PS4, but I think I will have to rethink my decision. I must admit that I like the looks of the X1 better and I was really looking forward to the voice commands and having my cable and game all in one. As for power, I actually think both systems games will look identical.

Heavenly King3955d ago

A less powerful $100 more expensive console looks better than the PS4?

LMAO!

Syntax-Error3955d ago (Edited 3955d ago )

The 360 was less powerful than the PS3 and what did you learn from that? The $100 difference comes from Kinect being added in. PS4 is priced just for the console itself. Kinect cannot be sold separately since it's not considered a peripheral any longer. It's part of the architecture of the console and is an integral part of the functionality. The PS Eye is not equivalent to Kinect so adding a 59.99 peripheral is pointless. There's a reason for everything

DON MATTRICK OFFICIAL:
http://news.xbox.com/2013/0...

"Last week at E3, the excitement, creativity and future of our industry was on display for a global audience.

1) An internet connection will not be required to play offline Xbox One games.
2) Trade-in, lend, resell, gift, and rent disc based games just like you do today"

TheLyonKing3955d ago

That took balls on Microsofts part. Pre orders will probably sky rocket.

Proud to be part of such a vocal community.

ginsunuva3955d ago

But still no reason to buy Xbox!

DARK WITNESS3955d ago

at least it's more even now...

I think if anything it's now more of a reason to own both.

I think this time round this gen my ps4 will be my primary console for gaming and if i do get a one it will just be for some first party exclusives.

They have done a lot of damage still and they are going to have to work on that.

still, it's a very positive thing for those of us who didn't support the bullshit and were vocal about it.

All the people who rolled over and were trying to justify it, well they look like idiots now. MS just made them look like fools. If ms were as sure of themselves as their blind sheep they would have stuck with it.

Jakens3954d ago

I really wanted a system for the rich that buy new games and don't rent. I wanted a system for the rich, the few, the non-scared. Even if said system charges $60+ for LIVE one day. I wanted a system for those with great paying, steady jobs, that have lots of paid vacations, with the best (but very expensive) steady internet connections that live in large cities away from all natural disasters (and places like "why would I live there?".

Not to mention, those with the system won't be doing illegal things at home with the Kinect on them. I wanted that XBOX. How great it could have been for me to know that people won't want to cheat and won't be pirating games, and clogging the multiplayer with trash and hate speech. It was going so good RIGHT THERE!!!

These owners of Xbox would be willing to be more honest in paying per person to watch any movies or to play anything on that Xbox. These few proud GAMER owners won't be leaving their home regions with that box without some strict limits.

These owners sadly do risk buying a second Kinect if the first one breaks (for any reason) Again, the rich, the few, and the non-scared. Boy that would have kept up the 200 comments threads for days here man. I kid...I kid...or do I? You decide.

This much is true...Damn I will miss the good points that Xbox had going for it...

Xbox's Preservation Step Sets A Much-Needed Example, Especially For Nintendo

Hanzla from eXputer inquires: "If Xbox can care about preserving its games and legacy, what exactly is wrong with Nintendo, trying to kill game preservation single-handedly?"

purple1014d ago

Ahh yes the good old game preservation of saving all your games to a removable hhd on the Xbox 360, taking it round your mates house, setting up multiple tvs to
Be met with “save data corrupted, please re download”

Or how about removing 360 games
From the store
, download them now or else, and, better hope to god that save data doesn’t corrupt, or it’s lost for ever

Nice one ☝️

Zeref4d ago

It's better than what Nintendo and Playstation is doing. It might not be perfect but at least they are TRYING. Unlike the others.

DarXyde3d ago

Trying? Take off the blinders for a moment, mate.

1. A failure to preserve games is just that: a failure to preserve games. Don't try to sugarcoat it: NO ONE is doing it properly. Better than awful is nothing to write home about.

2. At the time of this comment, isn't it the case that you need an internet connection to play Xbox games even if you buy physical discs that are hardly in circulation anymore? I don't have a Series X and I can't verify, but I think that is correct. I'm fairly certain you can at least play PS5 games at version 1.0 (not much of a win really when many games require day one patches). I think Microsoft's all digital, licensing approach is by far more aggressive than anyone else's. They really try to push you to game pass where you lose your entire library by umm.... Skipping a month of payments.

I don't think anyone is doing it right whatsoever. Don't get me started on Nintendo, who goes after anyone looking to preserve their games better than they ever would with extreme litigation.

Don't be a simp for any of these companies. Get it together.

PhillyDonJawn3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

@DarX never speak on Xbox again. You lost all credibility with your internet connection comment. Smh you have 0 clue and misinformed yet speaking on something you don't no squat about.

Einhander19723d ago

What has Sony done exactly? You guys keep deflecting to Sony but I am not actually seeing any results, and ai am certain nothing that you can come up with even comes close to what Microsoft has done and what they have tried and failed to do, like tie all your disks to your account on xbone.

Microsoft removed their whole indie section when they moved to the xbone because they were going to only allow games on the service that came from a publisher, id@xbox started after xbone launched and it only exists because Sony embraced indie and Microsoft was forced to cancel their plans and reverse course.

And every single game that was part of games for windows live including disk games (I have gta 4 on disk that won't work) so hundreds of games that use that DRM no longer work unless the company themselves patched it out which of course very few did.

MrBaskerville3d ago

Not trying. Tried. they killed of the backcomp program years ago. They set something up again, but sounds like it's more of an attempt to save the current library on whatever they are planning next. With luck they save everything and more, but let's see. I could see them killing off parts of the OG xbox and 360 libraries. Can't imagine that they would allow us to play Forza 5-7 in the future.

With that said, I do like what they've done and really wish they could have done more.

shinoff21833d ago

Zeref4d ago

Just because it's digital only doesn't mean you can't preserve it. Just put it on an external and you have the exact same functionality of what a disc does.

MrNinosan4d ago

Guess you're trolling, but if you actually think that's how it works, I'd recommend buying some braincells.

mkis0073d ago (Edited 3d ago )

Volitile vs nonvolitile data. A disc will not corrupt either. A drive can be corrupted.

Einhander19724d ago

This is just a scammy PR move to distract from the fact they are going digital only and trying to push streaming and subscriptions only.

No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft.

Without discs there is no preservation, preservation can't be done by the rights holders it can only be done by the consumers, anything else is a lie.

Zeref4d ago

Do you know you can put your games on an external and preserve them that way? There are no benefits to discs. ZERO. Idk why some of you are still obsessed with them.

DarXyde3d ago

Because games like Persona 5 exist. It's STILL V1.00. On Playstation, that's a win because 1.00 is installed on the disc—no need to download anything.

If a game does not require any updates, it's all on the disc.

Extremely low bar in the modern era, of course. It's not much of a win by any stretch.

But for now, physical media does have a purpose, at least on Playstation.

Einhander19723d ago

That is factually not how game licensing works, try plugging your hard drive into someone else xbox, It's not going to work, and it won't work if the licensing servers ever go down.

Einhander19723d ago

Anyone remember games for windows live.

I have around a dozen games, some on Steam itself that will not work because Microsoft shut off the licensing servers.

BehindTheRows3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

I do. I STILL have games (Gears of War being the big one) I cannot access because Games for Windows LIVE is total garbage and no one has held Microsoft accountable.

Zeref3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership.

Chevalier3d ago

"You don't have an Xbox apparently. Because you can 100 percent plug in your external and play games from it on any Xbox console lol. You just have to be logged in to prove ownership."

Damn how many times do people got to explain your idiocy to you? You can take a copy of Persona 5 like someone used as an example and play that game on ANY console WITHOUT logging in which means I can lend the game to a friend without internet and they can play my game. Can you lend your hard drive to anyone without logging in for them to play? NOPE. That is a huge difference and if you think otherwise then sorry you're an idiot.

Tacoboto3d ago

"No gaming company has pushed harder to remove ownership than Microsoft."

Ubisoft is literally erasing games people bought from their libraries... My PS1-3 discs are useless on modern hardware. Nintendo's re-published and resold almost their entire Wii U library, and the eShop is completely dead with no BC mechanism in the Switch software. Microsoft publishes everything they make today day one on Steam and Xbox/Windows. Sony only brings to PC the titles they think you might want some years later and Nintendo won't even design a functional long-lasting joystick.

You're absolutely trolling and not serious if you think Microsoft today is the worst offender.

shinoff21833d ago

Yay steam

Not everyone fks with computers though. The disc is still the best way as a console player. Period.

Nobody wants this. Sales or the lack of it in the case of XBOX is very telling. I wonder how the adorably all digital series X will fare. Adorably dismal perhaps?

crazyCoconuts3d ago

Only time will tell, but for from someone like me suspecting that Xbox is trying to gracefully exit the console market, that "forward compatibility" team is trying to get Xbox games playing on Windows PCs. I mean, it's nice that they're not planning on exiting with a "enjoy your games while the hardware still works" message, so that's nice. They still have a brand to protect via Microsoft so probably feel obligated to have a better exit strategy.

Xeofate3d ago (Edited 3d ago )

That is not their plan, their plan is to transfer users accounts to the cloud.

Phil Spencer himself said as much a few months back, plans could have changed but I think people are reading way too much into one statement where Phil said he would allow Epic on xbox because he wants to be able to sell xbox games directly on other platforms. Aka, instead of selling Sea of Thives through PSN he wants to have an xbox store to sell his games on PlayStation without giving PlayStation any money.

Again, it's extremely unlikely that Phil plans to put PC on xbox and licensing would prevent them from just giving out other publishers games purchased on xbox copies of thier games on PC, Microsoft does not own their games.

crazyCoconuts2d ago

The thing that doesn't align with the cloud strategy is the giving up on exclusives. You'd still need strong exclusives for cloud streaming - it's still a "platform" , just with a lower upfront hardware investment. I feel like they've learned what PS learned with PSNow long ago. We're not ready to stream games and it's only gonna lose them money to try at this point

FinalFantasyFanatic3d ago

I would love that, I'd buy up some of the Xbox games if they could run on PC, like the Rare Replay, Lost Odyssey and Dead or Alive Ultimate, probably a pipe dream though.

Could Xbox Soon Become The Next Dreamcast?

Microsoft's future in the video game space is murky right now, so let's break it all down.

thegamer.com
ApocalypseShadow16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

Not anytime soon. But they're on that path.

One thing not mentioned in the article is Microsoft's money bags. If Sega had Microsoft's money, they would have still been around as a hardware manufacturer. Xbox as a platform only survives because of the money bags. They can continue making consoles for the core and port to PC.

The multiplatform strategy is only the result of arrogance and misguided leadership that blew up in their face. They thought gamers would jump on Xbox in droves if they knew that many of their favorite games would be only on Xbox. But that's not happening at all. Sales didn't increase. They decreased. Why? Because the dumb asses thought giving away these expensively made games in a cheap service would also turn the tide.

Gamers on other platforms are willing to buy quality. They don't need to be handed nearly free games in a service that aren't even finished and sometimes average in their development. Gamers buy Nintendo games. They buy Sony games. Microsoft groomed their base to not buy games. Even the quality ones. It has always been their plan to go digital. But most gamers still like single player gaming. Still like physical releases.

Microsoft's problem has always been that they don't produce high quality games at the same output as Nintendo and Sony. Actually, they should be producing quite a lot more because they're worth over 2 TRILLION. How they don't have more is ridiculous and no excuse. Buying publishers to take away from competition only backfired. Because it still takes millions of dollars to continue to make those games from the publishers they snatched. Their only choice was to crawl back to their competitors to help sustain those developers because Nintendo and Sony platforms were the ones buying games.

Am I sorry for Microsoft? Hell no! They deserved last place for putting in the least effort. They deserved the fallout for buying up the industry and didn't make a single blip on the radar against their competitors where they now need those same gamers they took away games from to support them. Part of it may have been to cash in on their competition. But the result is the slow death of their platform. They may go 3rd party. They may keep making hardware. I don't give a shit about them to worry about it. I only give a shit about the destructive nature of their industry moves that only negatively affect gamers. They could sell and drop out of the industry and I wouldn't blink. Probably laugh. But not blink. They deserve whatever comes to them. At least Sega put in the effort when it came to games. They just had poor leadership. Microsoft has poor leadership and barely makes memorable games. That's a killer combination. And not in a good way.

Cacabunga16d ago

That would be an insult to Dreamcast.. it had a crazy line up of legendary critically acclaimed games.

Crows9016d ago

I was thinking the same. Dreamcast had incredible games in such a short amount of time. It was truly exceptional.

darthv7215d ago

...and yet all those great games were not enough to sway people from the looming release of the PS2 at the time. Sony just has that kind of brand loyalty.

Cacabunga15d ago

Darth

I do not agree.. Sony had even better games thanks to an unprecedented 3rd party support..
DC had amazing lineup but 90% were arcade games..

88315d ago

@darth:
And Sony showed off "The Emotion Engine" and their real time demos that made everyone think they would miss out on REAL next gen 128bit magic if they jumped in before PS2s polygon pushing monster (and early lack of anti-aliasing with a healthy heap of shimmer + DVD playback) stepped up. PS2 was a fantastic system though with amazing games.

That's not true. Just because Microsoft has the money doesn't mean Microsoft can allow xbox to bleed entire Microsoft money. It doesn't work like they. Also SEC will be watching and investor won't allow it. Lot of reasons why Microsoft can not continue even if they wanted to. SEC regulations is expensive.

fr0sty16d ago (Edited 16d ago )

Exactly this... Microsoft is a publicly traded company, mostly owned by their shareholders (Approximately 59.24% of the company's stock is owned by Institutional Investors, 7.73% is owned by Insiders and 33.03% is owned by Public Companies and Individual Investors.). Their shareholders call the shots on the business decisions, and their shareholders want one thing and one thing only, for their stock price to go up. Losses do not make stock prices go up... so if the division continually posts losses on hardware, but shows profits on software and services (which has been the case with Xbox its entire lifespan, for over 20 years now), the shareholders are going to grow impatient and demand they stop making hardware and focus on the only thing that has ever made them money, software and services.

When Microsoft bought Blizzard and Activision for almost 100 billion, I knew that was the nail in the coffin for Xbox as a console... as the shareholders were going to expect a quick return on that investment, and when it didn't materialize, they were going to be out for blood... out to force Xbox to sell those games on as many consoles as possible, "and while you're at it, sell those first party exclusives that aren't selling well on other consoles as well... hell, just stop making consoles and sell games."

If there is another Xbox console generation, it will definitely be the last, but I doubt there even will be one at this point. I think the Xbox division planning on it just in case, but I don't think the project has been greenlit from Microsoft itself. The rumors that they have not yet even secured the chips needed from the chip fabrication facilities ties into this.

shinoff218316d ago

While I usually agree with you . Alot of what was said can just also be asked before any of that.

How long will the shareholders wait? It doesn't appear long at all

Babadook715d ago

I think I get your point. Like just because MS has money does not mean they are content to throw it away on a dying ecosystem. Xbox has to be profitable or “what’s the point?”

ifinitygamer16d ago

Money bags, yes, but are we ignoring that Xbox actually makes a profit on games and GamePass? Hardware is often a loss leader, and they're probably making profit 4 years into the life cycle, but games and services revenue have been very profitable while other parts of Microsoft's business is struggling. Say what you will about the quality of those games, of course, but this is kind of a reverse Dreamcast situation, where the console was dragging down the company and put it at risk of shuttering entirely. Killing that console saved the business and allowed it to continue to make games on multiple platforms. In this case, the service is very profitable, as are the games, and they're also double-dipping into Multiplatform to extend this further, while their hardware is just sort of what they believe to be the best for gamers and their own titles (whether that is the case or not...)

fr0sty15d ago (Edited 15d ago )

The issue is, they aren't selling enough hardware to make their exclusives profitable, and now that they've bought half the gaming publisher/dev industry, they have no choice but to go third party to make a profit... and that is making their shareholders take a real close look at their hardware division under the microscope... why keep making the hardware if the software is all that is making them money, and they continually, generation after generation come in dead last with hardware sales?

Look at a game like Spiderman 2... if it had been an Xbox exclusive, with the amount it cost to develop, it would have been a huge failure... simply not enough consoles out there to sell it on. They would have been lucky to break even.

ifinitygamer15d ago

@fr0sty agreed completely, which is why they're hedging by releasing other games to multiplatform, plus they have PC to make up for the difference in a lot of ways, which is why their games are not complete money pits. It brings up the question of whether or not those exclusives would drive sales of consoles, though. Let's say Spiderman 2 was an Xbox exclusive, it would certainly have pushed console sales, though who's to say how much is anyone's guess.

That's why you can't rely on just one exclusive, Sony has always delivered on a wide range of solid exclusives, even this generation (even if they haven't been strong on the first party exclusives, they've made up for it with third party). They don't rely on just one "system seller", they have a portfolio of them.

ApocalypseShadow To be honest Sony has more of a chance to go 3rd party because like you said Microsoft has money, Sony does not. Sony does not have games, Only games they have come from 3rd party. Sony has been losing money for years and you. Saying Microsoft has been putting the least effort just proves you have no idea what's been going on. All Sony has done is repeat and recycle, never innovating or doing something new. All Sony has is brand loyalty nothing else and it shows.

Not sure about that. It's been two decades and I still think about Power Stone, Shenmue, Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, Seaman and others, but I'm not sure I'll remember Xbox Series X/S games in a few years from now... Maybe I'll remember about the franchises that the Xbox brand spawned, but I don't believe that the Xbox Series lives up to the late Dreamcast or even to the Xbox name itself. I do have great memories about the 360 with Blue Dragon, Gears 2 and Lost Odyssey though

Nah, sega actually makes good games

Becuzisaid16d ago

No, Dreamcast was ahead of it's time and most still have very fond memories of it that had one. It also had some good games on it even in it's short lifespan. Xbox has none of these qualities.

I remember it coming out at the time in a really bad place they hit the market before the PS2 but it was during this transitional time when Sony was promoting the power of the PS2 and so many of the Dreamcast games were awesome but often third parties simply ported the PS1 version increased resolution and performance but rarely fully utilise the capabilities of the console.

I think in the end bad marketing done it in and like the GameCube so many people are fond of it now but at the time it was looked at in the lense of the day and it didn't stack up.

Personally I miss Sega in hardware they took risks that many companies won't

I never owned it, and got the PS2 right when it launched. But there were certain games it had that I was always jealous of that I didn't have access to - Sonic adventure, crazy taxi, power Stone, code Veronica, shenmue, skies of Arcadia. I always thought it was a really cool machine though. I've never heard a bad thing about it though from those that had it.

I only ever saw one Dreamcast, and that was one my friend owned, pity I never got to play it, I wonder what games he had for it?

It would be nice if some of those games got ported to modern systems.

Oh man sonic adventure on the Dreamcast made me so jealous as a huge sonic fan on the mega drive who also moved to PlayStation 2 I never got the chance to play it back in the day either. The Dreamcast in Australia where I am was always relegated to the smallest corner of EB Games it was kind of a strong first indicator that things were not going well at the time.
