The Elder Scrolls Online will not support cross-platform play

GameZone writes, "Although The Elder Scrolls Online will be available on consoles and PC, the highly anticipated MMORPG will not support cross-platform play."

Interesting choice. I could see a game like CoD or BF4 not supporting this because of the differences between mouse+keyboard vs. gamepads, but this game seems to be all cooperative, would have been nice to see cross-platform play.

Maybe they have their reasons, oh well.

This has been known for a while. As long as each community has enough players to support it, then it will be fine. At least it will keep the fanboy wars out of the game.

It's interesting because the first mmo on the xbox and PS2, Final Fantasy 11, did have this capability. So it's an instance where the industry has gone back in terms of progress.

Yeah what ScubbaSteve said, this is kinda backwards. And add FFXIV to the cross-platform MMO list as well. PS3/4 will be playing with PC players. I expect Everquest Next to follow suit as well.

That is sad to hear. MMORPG is to play with friends and a big ass community, so if my friends have it on pc, xbone and ps4 I can't play with them bad move!!! At least of version will have a big community

the last thing we need is one version of the game having patching issues andholding back content or fixes from other versions. Look at the track record of past experience iwht skyrim alone, patches were held back on certain platforms and even expansions were held back cause of technical difficulties.
some ppl may whine now but they would be really mad if they had this kind of experience when they had the game in hand

Well if the the same patching policies are in place (like certifications) I really don't see how it would work on console. MMOs are updated constantly with hotfixes as well as standard updates so if they have to certify every one, the consoles would be left in the dust.

That must have been changed for next gen, or at least certain games will be exempted.

It's been done before just fine, but I don't know if I would trust Bethesda to pull it off though. Then again PC, PS4 and Xbox One all have similar architectures now so we should have much less of the Skyrim type problems you mentioned.

Well its going to be different since its a persistent world. It exists separate from the machine you play it on.

There will be problems, but just the standard MMO issues.

I'm pretty sure Zenimax is developing it.

MMO are notorious for balancing issues, cross-platform play would probably only add to that.

Pricing is the interesting question though, IMO. Sony made it optional, to a degree, so on PS4 they won't get charged twice. Xbox might be a different story.

Now, if they do go with a subscription based system it really should apply to all. I don't think anyone should have to pay "twice", but all should pay, or none should as I see it. That's is better for everyone involved anyway.

I have a feeling in a year later it will go F2P.

Its actually that sort reversal that has hurt the F2P reputation, at least as it applies to big MMOs.

Subscriptions at least take confusing and ridiculous restrictions out of the mix while not having to hide damn near everything behind a pay wall.

This usually happens when they have to switch to F2P. The Guild Wars system is my favorite and in a close second would be a subscription system.

I just hope whatever they do, they stick to it.
