PS4 Components Reportedly Start Shipping in June - One Million Units Per Month

The upstream supply chain reportedly has already started shipping orders for the PlayStation 4 (PS4) in June, and volumes may reach one million units per month by September for the year-end holidays. Meanwhile, volume shipments for Microsoft's Xbox One are expected to start in the third quarter, according to sources from the upstream supply chain.

So wait there is something I don't get. Didn't developers say that specs are not finalized, How is it possible to ship those systems then? We still don't know the exact GPU used.

So the systems are available now and are basically just waiting for sony's green light, interesting

Arai3959d ago

Aesthetics mainly at this point and legal protection.
As for the GPU we won't know until the system is released or someone leaking such information that works at the assembly plant.

In-production sounds about right, October/November release is happening.
They'll try and 1-up Microsoft and get the system out before Black Friday, that much I'm sure of.

US8F3959d ago

Appreciate you taking the time to answer Arai!

Cheers

abzdine3959d ago

as i said in another news, Sony are gonna surprise the world and announce the PS4 for September or early October!

Greatnes awaits

mistertwoturbo3959d ago

I'm pretty certain it will come out before Black Friday.

Sitdown3959d ago

I say the 1st of November which is a Friday......and they can do a whole "what are you thankful for" campaign with various Sony characters saying what they are thankful followed by a pan from inside the console where the characters live out to a gamer holding the console saying I am thankful for all of you. Cut to a black screen with the slogan... Greatness Awaits.

BLAKHOODe3959d ago

I'm banking on the first or second week of November since Call Of Duty: Ghost comes out November 5 and it's suppose to be available "Day 1" on the PS4.

wastedcells3958d ago

It should launch on the 5th with COD. I'm not interested in COD but it would be a smart move.

3-4-53958d ago

They will have their own day + black friday and will sell many more that way.

Narutone663958d ago

The components are already available as the article reported. If I'm not mistaken, Pegatron is also one of the OEM for Sony PS4.

doctorstrange3958d ago

I do hope it's true as it sounds they're well prepared. But - http://techland.time.com/20...

nirwanda3958d ago

@3-4-5
If they launch early november there probably won't be any left for black friday.

ramiuk13958d ago

a few friends at retail i know have it down on there system as nov 1st in uk

SynGamer3958d ago

Assuming Sony can actually release the PS4 in early October, it would make perfect sense. Release the console October 1st (Tuesday), it sells millions within the first week/month. BUT then Black Friday comes up about 1.5 months later, just as hype may be dying down for the PS4 launch. The Xbox One will be launching sometime in November which would give Sony plenty of time to build up a new campaign just in time for Black Friday, reigniting sales.

This is assuming as well that sales even die down after the PS4 launches.

NeloAnjelo3958d ago

Agreed! Before black Friday is a big Deal.

famoussasjohn3958d ago

Mother of God if it releases before Black Friday. Think of the bundle deals then! If they are capable of doing so, they're going for the throat on this one.

miyamoto3958d ago

16 million units this holiday 2013 is very feasible!

https://www.google.ca/webhp...

everyone I know who has a PS3 is excited.

http://blog.mainstreethost....

solidt123958d ago

I heard it is coming out on Nov 5th, but I have also heard this from several people in the industry and that they are also considering moving the day up to Oct 29th to launch with Battlefield 4 as an option.

BISHOP-BRASIL3958d ago

Not trying to rain on anyone's parade, but they said it would release on "Holidays" 2013. Well, as far as I know, "Holidays" range from Thanks Giving (late november) to New's Yer Day (1st day of next yer, but as it's 2013, the time gap would end by December 31), this pretty much rule out October and Spetember.

On the bright side, the earliest possible date is Black Friday... Imagine how crazy wouldn't be releasing PS4 on Black Friday!

I think specs finalized means how much of the ram is used for os, or the processor type etc.

fr0sty3959d ago (Edited 3959d ago )

The GPU was leaked to be a Radeon 7000 series GPU.

Sony's official specs put it at 1.84 teraflops, which agrees with the above leak.

The GPU is pretty much a known quantity at this point.

"Sony has confirmed the actual performance of the PlayStation 4's GPU as 1.84 TFLOPS. Sony claims the GPU features 18 compute units, which if this is GCN based we'd be looking at 1152 SPs and 72 texture units." - Anandtech

There are also a number of customizations, for instance:

"The original AMD GCN architecture allowed for one source of graphics commands, and two sources of compute commands. For PS4, we’ve worked with AMD to increase the limit to 64 sources of compute commands — the idea is if you have some asynchronous compute you want to perform, you put commands in one of these 64 queues, and then there are multiple levels of arbitration in the hardware to determine what runs, how it runs, and when it runs, alongside the graphics that’s in the system." - Mark Cerny

ps4 gpu is confirmed to have 18 compute units and is capable of 1.84 teraflops not sure what else you want to know about the GPU

@US8F
somewhere between HD7850-HD7870 arguably the best price per performance cards out there at least they were last i checked. which would usually power about a mid-to high end pc. (high if you crossfire them)

US8F3959d ago

Comparison to a video card to see the capabilities. Out of curiosity more than anything really.

NameRemoved00173959d ago (Edited 3959d ago )

By the time the ps4 comes out amd will be on the 9000 series which the flagship 9970 is rumored to have 4000 cores and 6GB Vram, that is what the consoles will be up against.

US8F3959d ago

@Blackdeath

+ bubble, Thanks a lot.

I know that it cannot be compared directly because of different requirements between PC and a Console do to optimization but it is interesting to see what kind of Card we are stuck with for the next decade and how efficient it is.

What the heck, I'm feeling curious still, lol. The PS3, which card can it be compared to?. It is really impressive that some games really look good on it after 8 years

BitbyDeath3958d ago

@hdshatter,

But it'll likely take til the PS5 arrives before devs start utilizing that type of hardware in games.

badz1493958d ago

7 years, not 8 but the GPU inside might be 8 years old design seeing as it's equivalent, the GF7800 was released in November 2005.

still mind boggling though as I swear a pc 7 years ago with GF7800 can only dream to run games like the PS3's GoW, Uncharted and TLoU.

consoles are designed with high optimization, so, like the PS3, the PS4 will have long legs too in providing gorgeous looking games 5 years from now.

PS4 is done. They showed the case and all. That was a final version. With that goes that you know the board layout and what's more the cooling system. Based on that the full PCB must be specified and verified at that stage. If MS hasn't started yet, they are indeed behind.

Oh, well, if there's some truth to that, it is indeed full machines. Could be an early launch, indeed.

moparful993958d ago

I bet sony spent the time between the XBONE reveal and E3 to nail down the design and start manufacturing.. Knowing what the competition had and realizing they were ahead spec wise they could take advantage of that time and start getting enough units built for the launch..

ElementX3959d ago

The official PS4 specs were released at E3. MS hasn't released their official specs, however.

Jazz41083958d ago

Ps4 is being maufactured by foxconn the chinise factory that has been on the news over and over for employees being overworked striking and shoddy work to do overtime requjrement. Not trolling just the truth please look it up its all over the web.

a08andan3959d ago

Well it sounds like they have started the shipping of some parts of the PS4, not the actual console. Which to me sounds good! Means that they start in time!

rbluetank3959d ago

I was thinking Sony would release the ps4 in oct. I just can not wait to get my hands on ps4. I hope they sneak in a unannounced AAA title at launch...

Arai3959d ago (Edited 3959d ago )

AC: Black Flag and Battlefield 4 will be released on October 29th, with CoD: Ghosts on November 5th, followed by Watch Dogs on November 19th.

Those are the biggest titles per year, enough reason for the console to be out late October or early November.

IIRC games are released on Tuesdays in the US, for Europe it's Fridays. October 29th is a Tuesday.

xPhearR3dx3959d ago

For the most part you're correct. The Last of Us & Skyrim for example launched on a Friday here in the US. I believe the Wii U launched on a Sunday. When it comes to hardware, the days may vary.

extermin8or3958d ago

Hardware varies and I can't work it out based on launch title games either I mean BF4, AC4 and watch dogs are ALL launch day titles yet some release end of october and other releases mid november- I can only assume watch dogs must be out a week or two earlier on PS4 then as COD isn't launch day implying it releases before COD does...

Livecustoms3959d ago

So your saying i could potentially find a playstation lorry and rob it and find Ps4 !?!??!?!? Damn anybody up for helping me with a job... ?

KwietStorm_BLM3959d ago

I'd wait for both Payday 2 and GTA V before finalizing your plans. Always good to see the potential faults beforehand.

killacal133959d ago (Edited 3959d ago )

I just wonder how many units will be sold by year"s end, I'm gonna guess around 7 million. Probably more.

daggertoes833959d ago

could be more than we all think now that some xbox fans are jumping ship

Livecustoms3959d ago

I used to be an Xbox Fanboy untill i realised microsoft are pricks.... (Not a skyrim quote or anything..)

3958d ago
Boody-Bandit3958d ago (Edited 3958d ago )

I was an Xbox fan until all the dreaded rumors became a reality May 21st, confirmed restrictions on June 6th, the coffin lid closed and nailed shut on June 10th ($499), then the hole dug and filled in with Don Mattricks interview on June 11th.

I'm off the MS bandwagon and headed for the land of Sony.

AhmadCentral3959d ago (Edited 3959d ago )

I'd say more around 5-6m with at least 8-9m by march 31st 2014.

If my estimate comes true that's going to be Sony's biggest launch yet which is amazing.

PS2 sold 10.6m in it's first year. PS4 might sell 10m in it's first 6/7 months.

Game4life3959d ago

as long as the flow of games coming out is steady, I think it will happen. Though I think it will be like 6 to 7 million max right now ending march

AhmadCentral3959d ago

If they're starting production now i really wouldn't be surprised if they hit 8m by march 31st. (produced, not sold to customers)

Gameratheart3958d ago (Edited 3958d ago )

Ps4 has the potential to sell loads... But, lets not get overly excited... It may well sell 10+ million in the first year, but remember, most consoles don't start selling their best until 2-3 years in. I was an x-Xbox fan... I was a diehard fanboy... But ms blew it, so I already preordered a ps4... Ms seems arrogant, and cocky... They remind me if Sony when the ps3 was coming out.. The whole "get a second job to buy it" thing with its over blown price tag... Now ms is saying, if you want offline, there's an xbox360.... No stupid, there's a ps4!! Lol, Sony will outsell ms, by a large margin, but lets not start talking crazy numbers.... But hey! I hope it does!

Ju3959d ago

7M PS4s will probably not be possible. 1M/month is quite a number. If they ramp up to a full 1M/month in Sept they will have a max of 4 (maybe 5M) units available this year.

ArcRunner review - Games Asylum

Games Asylum: "‘Live service’ games have been the source of contention of late, fuelled by reports of numerous publishers having at least one in the pipeline. Publishers love the concept as there are countless ways to implement microtransactions while retaining player engagement. Gamers, however, tend to audibly ‘sigh’ whenever a new one is announced – they’re demanding experiences based around daily revisits and grinding. ArcRunner couldn’t be any more different, offering co-op shooting thrills while being remarkably respectful of your time."
