Lucas and Spielberg Insult Video Games

Recently, George Lucas and Stephen Spielberg spoke at an event celebrating the opening of a new School of Cinematic Arts building at USC. During that event, both spoke about the “implosion” of the film industry and how television might just be the new medium to tell a story. They also stated that video games can’t tell stories and don’t create characters that we can care about.

The first was brilliant and entertaining and never got "SCI-FI WTF?!" until the last 20 minutes. Crystal Skull they "nuked the damn fridge" in the FIRST 20 minutes.

Spielberg and Lucas just need to tip their hat to the new generation of directors (My picks: Joseph Kosinski, Christopher Nolan, and Zack Snyder) and bow out. Hell the three guys I listed have produced better movies in their short runs than Spielberg and Lucas ever have through their entire 30+ year run.

the reality is, that's what most people think now, what we need to understand is that video games is still a relatively new medium, it's been mainstream for just over 3 decades, Movies weren't generally accepted as an art form until the 40's, Jazz music until the late 50's and that was a genre that was 60 years old at that point.

Yes people dismiss it now, but that's because they don't know any better, gaming as a medium is only getting bigger, and as more and more examples start to churn out like Limbo, Ico, Mass Effect, TLOU, Uncharted (which funny enough has better writing than anything Mr Lucas has thrown out), SOTC, Journey, Another World, MGS, Bioshock, the argument against games as art will only wear thin.

So let them dismiss it now, but I guarantee their attitude will change in the next 10 years time

I nearly cried in various parts of Dragon Quest V, and those were just sprites with no fancy 3D animation or anything. Pretty sad to hear what sounds like close-minded thinking, coming from 2 people who should be as open minded as possible. Back to the Future is still my favorite film, but story wise and from personal experience, video games tend to give me a deeper and more meaningful story experience.

Video games aside, if I wanted a good story, I would read a book, not watch cinematics that someone else conjured up for me. The best cinematics are those I Imagine or dream up myself.

Story is only one part of gaming, and they never once say that games are incapable of emotional impact. When you have a "player" messing with the immersion of your perfectly scripted storyline I can understand what they mean, so props to developers who can write emotionally engaging stories.

They are directors who are used to scripting and being in control of the audiences whole perception so I can understand why they may not have a great opinion if/when they make games, it's difficult, I see game developers to film directors akin to stage and film acting, same concept but vastly more difficult if you are only experienced in one medium.

Also, Speilberg is a complete boss of his medium and is deserving of all the praise in the world for his career. Lucas got lucky with Star Wars and has rode/trashed it ever since. Warhammer 40K has more depth than his writing, and that just consists of space guys bombing each other from orbit then riding down in planes so they can hit each other with swords.

His last decade of work has been a joke. He can't even reboot or initiate a Jurassic Park sequel, and is now focusing on more side-projects than ever. Wash-out indeed.

I think you guys misunderstood them. They know games can tell stories, but mostly gamers appreciate them for their characters and stories. Spielberg and Lucas are talking about gaming breaking out of it's shell and becoming an accepted form of entertainment in the same regards as Hollywood films. The problem with a lot of games is that repetitive violence takes center stage and the story and characters gets lost in all that violence. At least for those looking in from the outside of the gaming world. Lucas says that one game is coming that will be like Titanic. Where it captures the entire world's imagination for it's characters and story telling.

Think about how a lot of mainstream games play out. They tell a story, introduce a character. kill waves of enemies. show the story again. kill waves of enemies. kill kill more enemies. kill kill! show the story. kill kill. show the story. kill kill! Most play out that way. They have to somehow break out of that mold.

You guys didn't read the article all the way through, or perhaps you didn't see what they meant. They didn't mean it as in we don't care about the characters. They meant that as soon as you put a controller in your hand, you tend to treat the game as more of a sport than a medium to watch a story unfold. There have been moments where I have nearly cried, alright I admit I cried, while playing games. But, I still had that controlling feeling of this is my character and I want to kick ass, let's get past the blah blah boring lovey shit. I think it's just when you lay down, or sit back and watch a movie you don't have that urge to just rush through and get to the fighting.
