While Microsoft fired the first shot of the next generation pricing war with a MSRP of $499, Sony just responded in kind by officially unveiling the price point of the PS4.

are essentially very similar. Both will do media (movies, music) both will do social interaction, both are similarly powered, both will play used games, both have a camera that will be used for some games and not so much for other games, both have a paid membership level that gives more access to the features of the system.

The $100 price difference is really the only difference. To many it is THE only difference. To me...Im still buying both. Im ready for the next gen. I have live gold and PS+. Now I just need to wait till they get released.

Speaking for myself, Im in the best situation as I will be continuing to play halo on the next gen xbox as well as play killzone on the next gen ps. Those who only choose 1...be happy with what you pick. Dont get upset if you got the wrong one because you can always buy the other when you feel the time is right.

Most Sony players already have PS+, so this is mostly a non-issue, and PS+ has already, for years, been a MUCH better value for the money than XBLive. I don't mind Sony taking measures to secure money when they're giving us SOOOOO much in exchange for our loyalty. PS+ offers Sony a way of revenue to counteract the insane value they're giving us with the system.

Though I have to say that I was disappointed with the pay-for-online model, I guess the whole no DRM and $100 cheaper made up for it. And one thing you all are forgetting is, that with Xbox, you need gold to access ANYTHING online. That includes your online games, as well as apps such as Netflix, Hulu, Gametrailers, etc. PS+ is requirement for MULTIPLAYER ONLY for the PS4, everything else is free to access. PS3 and PSVITA will NOT require PS+ for multiplayer.

I missed the conference yesterday, I've only read the comments on here and the article...

So far I'm pleased, £349 which is £80 cheaper than the Xbox One (£429.99). Supports used games, no need to be constantly online, the only downside is one needs to be a PS+ member to play online, however I've had PS+ before and it is well worth it so for me I'm happy.

I haven't even watched the conference and I'm bloody excited. Time to watch it I guess...

Outside of KH3, FF15, and The Order 1886, it wasn't that great of a conference. But what made Sony win E3 was simply using microsofts cons against them...Displaying some games, but also showing you that this is a pro-consumer console. That alone, IMO, beats ALL of the exclusives that microsoft showed today. Yeah we have to pay for online now, but if that means I still get the same benefits that ps plus has, I'd be more than happy to pay. When they dropped those bombs, that was easily the best moment in E3 history. The way the crowd reacted to the price, used games being allowed, and no drm. It seriously gave me chills and I was just fist pumping the air like an idiot. Good job Sony.

I think it's important to note that Sony made it seem as if you need PS plus for multiplayer. I would rather have to pay for multiplayer than have to be online all the time or a camera on constantly. The problem I have with charging for online is that there are four gamers in my family. If PS+ is required for each account, that just raised the cost by $200 a year for something we have always had for free on the PS3. That was one of the major reasons I was not interested in a 360.

I have already preordered a PS4, but I hope that they come out with some kind of family PS+ plan. Microsoft used to have one for the Xbox where you paid $100 and got 4 Live Gold accounts, but that was discontinued recently.

Yeah the MS conference for this E3 was suprisingly good. Forza, Halo, Quantum break and Ryse poked my interest as exlusives. and the multiplats were good too, BF4, Titanfall etc.

But it doesnt change the fact that Microsoft are unstable and unreliable cold liars. And that the One is a badly designed, restricted, privacy intrusive, anti consumer box and a waste of air. (Not design as in looks, but infrastructures and ideology)

And Sony did just as good with the games if not better. I LIKED EVERYTHING... except the Ps+ to play online thing. FREE CORE online experience have always been a huge selling point for PS.
It doesnt impact me much as I cant imagine Playstation without PS+. But not everyone shares my point of view allthough I will agree its sort of a careless move.

If any of the serious multiplayer gamers on the 360 were thinking of switching they just lost their reason to. It's one thing to switch to an inferior service because it is free, but who is going to switch and get less for the same price?

Why is that? You still have to pay on MS, so it's a wash. And the two services are on par from a gameplay perspective. The only reasonable reason I've seen someone give is the matchmaking services of live, but I'm sure Sony is offering something along those lines with this new social media focus they have.

So again, if you have to pay on both, why not go with the one that offers more for your money(IGC)?

They both use P2P for online gameplay. As such the actual quality of it is going to be dependent on the host connection. It's how every major engine from this gen has worked. Like I said, the only quantifiable difference is the matchmaking service, and I guess chat service, which was better this gen on the 360. Sony seems to be addressing that issue for next gen, as I said above. I personally have never had a problem with any game play related issues while playing MP games on my PS3 other than those that would be introduced due to user lag.

But go on believing that 360 does P2P connections better somehow. It's not really worth comparing this gens online service to next gen yet, because we have no idea what either of them will offer.

I have to agree that their conf was not impressive until the price point was announced. I have to wonder if Sony was actually merely announcing the price of the cheapest SKU (like... camera-less, and smallish HDD), whereas MS maybe was announcing their only SKU, which may be in line with a more pricey PS4 SKU.

Still, cheaper is cheaper, and people will jump at that. Heck, the 360 Arcade model was a huge win for MS this gen.

The no free MP hurts. I would wager that new income is what will allow Sony to drop the price. I guess that's a good thing? Not sure yet.

You must be really Hurt Cuz it really shows. Ms showed better games? That's arguable but Imo I don't think so. Sony games looks cleaner, higher res textures, less jaggies and higher quality.

Only game that interested me from the Ms show was Metal Gear and that's multi platform. Also that Crimson Dragon looked cool too since I'm a big fan of Panzer Dragoon.

Once PS show showed Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts III they won the show by far for me. All the other games, sweet price point were all icing on an already tasty cake.

I usually buy both systems, PS2/Xbox, Xbox360/PS3, but this time i am only getting the PS4. The Used Games had me wavering, then the price point just pushed me all the way over. I love xbox, they do have some wonderful things. But the DRM, Online Check, and the 499 price tag makes it a no go for me. Im hoping in a year, MS will wake up and fix some of their mistakes and maybe i end up getting it. But for now, ill play their games on my PC.

Sony did an excellent job keeping the momentum going since its reveal & keeping the rumor mill quiet on their side.

Microsoft simply failed to heed the opinions of gamers everywhere to instead greedily clamor for any bit of money it could get from their customers.

In the end, Microsoft pretty much cut their own throats-- all Sony had to do was stand out of their way and let it happen.

I'm pretty sure that the price for the PS4 wasn't locked in until Microsoft quoted their price-- then, Sony executives asked themselves, "Can we do this for cheaper"?

What a blow it must have been for the leaders of Microsoft to hear that the price for the PS4 will be $100 lower than the Xbox One.

I think with the conversion to PAL plus other taxes involved, this could go to about.. between **AU$799 up to **AU$999 for us. That's just for the bare bones console itself and does not include deals.

EB games have it listed for $549 and the xbone for $599 so the ps4 is very affordable i have mine paid off already. The thing i dont get is why is the xbone only $50 australian dollars more here , either they are over charging for the ps4 or undercharging for the xbone.

Apparently more than 50% of the xbone preorders have been cancelled at my local EB after the e3 conference and the ps4 gained a bunch more preorders, im glad im second on the list.

Dont get me wrong plus is good value for money if you have not already played the games on there, but alot of people have already played the games that come to plus so it is of no use to us, like Lord of the Rings War in the North .... its broken , you get to a part in the game and you cant progress and they wont fix it .... does that sound like great service to you?

These companies are getting bad with ways to charge people, i mean when i connect to a friends game that he is hosting its our bandwidth we are using not Sony or MS or who ever, thats right charging us for using our own bandwidth.

Anyway the console looks nice, and i hope the quality on the voice coms is batter than last gen, atleast then plus maybe worth it.

if you don't think Playstation Plus with all that it gives you is worth getting then nothing will.

With features and Cloud gaming through Gaikai will be added soon as well, it is a given to get it if you have a Playstation console.

There are like 3 free to play games, based on what I have seen they look mighty fun to play with as well. That and if you like racing games, DRIVE CLUB will be free for Playstation Plus members. That alone is at least a $60 + tax value right there.

I am sure before November, MSFT will release a $399 bundle with kinect but a much smaller HDD. They messed up requiring Kinect. Or MSFT takes a loss on each console, but the Gamers who have done their research won't support MSFT and the DRM and 24 hr check no matter what. In the long run your hurting yourself. However Driveclub PS+ edition could be a stripped down version of the full game... and if you want all the cars and maps you have to pay an extra penny.

Just installed a hd7950 into my gaming pc a few months back (will add another when the time comes) and then installed an fx 8350 cpu a few weeks back to accompany my 16gb of 1600 corsair vengence ram,i first decided to do this specific build when i heard amd were powering all the big three consoles, point being games for at least the next 8-10 years will be built and optimised with amd cpu and gpu setups in mind which will no doubt pass on the benefits to amd pc gaming rigs, long story short pc for multiplats and ps4 for exclusives,peace out......

I have been an Xbox fan for many years... I prefer the games developed for Xbox. (Mass Effect trilogy rocked... Dragon Age. too. Halo wasn't all that bad, either). Maybe they tend toward more SciFi/fantasy games?

I also have a PS3. I got one of the first, completely backwards compatible. Yes, I still play PS One games :))))

Now I am unsure about what to do. I planned on ordering the next XBox but these restrictions are just too much. I am an older gamer. I got very ill a few years ago and cannot work any longer. Gaming has become a way to cope and not just a hobby. I have no choice but to buy used games. I am living on such a small income that ebay and amazon's used games are a necessity.

MS is complaining bc they don't make money when people sell their games privately. Um - why should they get more than one bite at the apple? It really irks me when corporations cry about their bottom line when their CEO's make more money than god. Meanwhile, people like us have worked all of our lives and we are barely able to survive from paycheck to paycheck.

Maybe Ms ought to review it's six and seven figure bonuses instead of leaning on gamers who actually pay their salaries. I think CEO's and execs have forgotten that it is consumers who keep their arses off the unemployment lines.

I suggest you join Gamefly if you haven't yet, and rent baby! PS4 ensures that the next gen is still rentable. You can complete as many 1p games as you want each month for 17 bucks. Now I understand you're on a very limited, fixed income, but if you value gaming that much, then it's beyond worth it.

Why the PS4 games don't look better than XB1. It's 1.8TF right? Most of XBOX1s games ran at 1080p 60FPS but PS4boys was all over the place. XBox1 games look better how can that be ?

Ok, very clever of Sony to under cut MS by $100. This definitely means a price cut for the Wii U. And the similarity someone has already mention about Saturn and PS1 is eerie. But, I seriously doubt the same thing will happen with the Xbox One. Sure it has some negatives, but anybody that saw MS video on the Xbox One had no choice but to be impressed with it.

It's a shame MS didn't ask for my advice. I would have told them that Sony know the gaming business all to well, are quick learners and have a huge loyal following. MS has to drop the price by $50 quickly.

It's seems pretty obvious right now, Sony has win this generation. But, we won't know for sure until they battle it out on the store shelves this holiday season.
