Dark Souls 2: Prepare to Buy, or Prepare to Cry?

I by no means claim to be an expert, but here is my 2 cents on the semi-recent admission that Dark Souls 2 will be marketed as a AAA title, and why that probably spells bad news for the franchise.

I think DaS2 will be great (we've already seen live gameplay, after all). What I hope is that the game tightens some screws and fixes some issues that have been in both DeS and DaS (things like the abuse of backstabs or spamming certain spells). The single-player is great. It's the online play that needs to be tweaked, and I think they'll do a fine job.

Thanks for the comment, I agree the game-play footage looks promising, I'm particularly excited about enemies demanding a wider tactical approach i.e falling back on you if you go for the backstab etc.

My articles main concern is more with the publisher than with From Software, I have no doubt if they retain control of development then it will be fantastic.

The game will be great, I don't doubt that... my issue here is that if DS2 is marketed as a AAA title then From Software are going to expect a bigger return to cover the cost of said marketing, and when it inevitably doesn't deliver so well on that return, because lets be honest here Dark Souls may well be a great franchise but it is quintessentially "niche" If that happens, From Software may just decide the IP is no longer profitable and discontinue it, I mean it's not at all like this kind of thing hasn't happened before.

@ both above

I'm a huge fan of the series...150+ hours in DeS and 200+ hours in DaS. I have a level 640 character in Dark Souls, if that helps to illustrate my devotion. ;)

I think DaS2 could be a do-or-die situation. You're right. It's niche and FROM wants to see if it can be more than niche. If DaS2 fails to sell more than the first two games, FROM may have to call it quits or scale back the development costs, though afaik both Souls games turned a profit (not 100% sure on that).

I guess we'll see. We need a lot more competition in this sub-genre of 3rd person action games. The only other notable ones I can think of on console would be Witcher 2, Dragon's Dogma (kinda), and Skyrim.

RabbitFodder3963d ago

Kudos on the level 640, must've taken some doing haha.

prepare to cry or buy? i say both, i will buy it and cry when i get punish and be happy when i platinum it the same way i got my plat on demons souls and dark souls. hopefully the game improved a lot from its predecessors. im also hoping that the new game that was announced by fromsoftware is a true successor to the demons souls franchise.

DS2 will be dumbed down for Skyrim fans sake.

RabbitFodder3963d ago

I don't disagree, but we have at-least 9 months to keep on hoping it isn't.

My_Name_BTW_Is_Dante3963d ago

Dark Souls was already dumbed down from Demon's Souls so I'm not surprised or concerned that the same will happen to the sequel.

I'd still rather have Demon's Souls 2. Not some new IP that's similar.

I expect Dark Souls 2 to be even more dumbed down in difficulty just like Dark Souls was from Demon Souls.

Dark Souls is probably the most overrated game when it comes to being 'hard'. It really wasen't, especially the last half of the game.

I don't expect Dark Souls 2 to be either, since they want to reach a wider audience

By the time I finish dark souls and demons souls , dark souls 2 will be free on ps+

belac093963d ago

you can realistically beat demons souls in 20 hrs. i did, and dark souls in less if you get help from other players. demons souls has picked up lately with people putting down summon signs.

jjb19813962d ago

I can never find any, I played 4 hours the other day and didn't see one I did see about a hundred places where people died

Dark Souls: Archthrones Reaffirms Modding Is The Best Thing To Happen To Games

"Dark Souls: Archthrones is like playing a brand new FromSoftware game, and that speaks volumes about just how much good modding can do," says Hanzala from eXputer.

The prevalence of parrying: Why is it so popular?

Parrying has been creeping into more games, with almost every high-profile title of the last few years featuring it in some way.  Why?

i understand the authors frustration i'm not the best at parrying in games. not that i can't complete a game that requires it but it is a definite harder thing for me than other kinds of techniques in games. which might be the main reason it's so heavily added in games nowadays. want to make your game challenging without having to do a lot of work? just add a parry boss. (what i mean by parry boss is a boss you have to beat by parrying such that their attacks will kill you otherwise)

Dudeson24d ago (Edited 24d ago )

I always think it's fine as long as such games also have the roll/dodge panic button. But I understand the will to parry, it seems so cinematic in a fight when you pull it off.

Hidetaka Miyazaki claims Dark Souls 2 “carried” the series forward

Dark Souls 2 remains a divisive entry in the landmark RPG franchise, but Hidetaka Miyazaki believes it led to the success of Elden Ring.

The game isn't good though.

Rols49d ago

DS2 was fine. While there was a bit of recycling assets or ideas for bosses, it was a bigger more open Dark Souls. The Fume knight boss is one of the hardest bosses in the series until Sekiro and Elden Ring were released.

CrimsonWing6949d ago

The problem with Dark Souls 2 was the same problem when a different director takes over for a sequel to an outstanding movie. It typically (there are exceptions) doesn’t have the feel and vision of the previous movie.

I wouldn’t say Dark Souls 2 is terrible. Had Dark Souls 1 never been a thing and we got this, I think it would have been praised more. The problem is it didn’t have the Miyazaki touch to it and felt pretty derivative. The soundtrack is a banger though.

Aussiesummer49d ago

And it will happen in the future when he doesn’t touch them as he is planning on.

MrBaskerville49d ago

I like DS 2, might even be my favorite of the 3. But it's a hard sell, there's so many obscure things you need to do to make it an enjoyable experience. So always find it hard to recommend, but it is worth the trouble.
