Has Microsoft Already Ruined the Xbox One?

Microsoft’s big day at E3, the world’s largest video game expo, has been tarnished – perhaps even sabotaged – before the convention begins. Fans, who have been waiting nearly seven years for the Xbox’s 360 next-generation successor, had their excitement turn to anger when it became clear that Microsoft would require internet connectivity and impose restrictions on how used games are re-sold and shared.

With every bit of news the release things get worse, E3 is their last chance. if they mess that up then I have no idea what people see in the Xbox One

Sandmano3973d ago (Edited 3973d ago )

Even thought they release interesting looking exclusives I believe its too late.

Wizziokid3973d ago

I will miss playing games like Halo but I just can't see myself paying money to partially own my games.

The last thing I want to do is support this direction MS is heading which, if successful you will see as the norm in the future generations.

I'm interested in a new Gears, Forza, Halo, etc, but the current online and privacy issues have me not buying one until possible way later in its lifecycle.

Now this rumor from NeoGAF saying that MS is paying 3rd party pubs to not show their games on PS4 at E3 has me really disturbed. I'm taking it as it is (a rumor), but if it turns out to be true, that would be another huge strike against the XBOX One.

I thought Nintendo screwed up with their initial reveal of the Wii U, but MS has taken it to a whole 'nother level. They are being shady with the gamers, and it looks like they have aligned themselves with the publishers and not the developers and gamers.

fr0sty3973d ago

This is what I've felt I'm seeing every day leading up to the E3 press conference...

Man-E-Faces3973d ago

Your post is 1 of the most truest I have ever laid eyes upon not only on here N4G but any other gaming forum,
thank you!

"Now this rumor from NeoGAF saying that MS is paying 3rd party pubs to not show their games on PS4 at E3 has me really disturbed. I'm taking it as it is (a rumor), but if it turns out to be true, that would be another huge strike against the XBOX One. "

I'm a gaming journalist and have been for many years. I've attended press events where Microsoft paid to have their logos plastered all over the lobby, even on the napkins, and only Xbox 360 consoles were present. No PS3 version was shown at all (THQ was especially bad about this.), or if it was shown it was on two or three TVs vs. 30-40 for Xbox. In other words, Microsoft has already been doing this for a long time, just not on the scale that they apparently are these days.

I also have seen them do similar things at E3, but not on the scale they are rumored to be doing this year.

I miss when companies used the merits of their own games to sell them, rather than tossing piles of cash around to give the impression of a preference for their product. Thankfully some still do let their games sell themselvess, but this is still disappointing to see none the less.

ABizzel13973d ago

@fr0sty

I don't know about paying third parties, but I wouldn't be shocked if they're paying the media off. Perfect example Spike TV is airing the EA and M$ conference, but passing on Sony and Nintendo.

I'm sure being having exclusive coverage of M$'s conference in the pass hasn't had any effect on this decision, or the fact that the X1 needs all the positive press it can get seeing how the PS4 is demolishing it amongst the core.

Shady underhanded tactics like this, just makes me dislike M$ even more.

fr0sty3972d ago (Edited 3972d ago )

I can confirm I have never seen this in practice. While I did get showered with gifts and free all expenses paid trips to New York, L.A., Vegas, etc. to attend press events (a common industry practice used by all), I never got cash outright from any publisher or developer. Not saying it has never happened, but I haven't personally observed it.

Spike not airing Sony is due to Sony having their conference during prime time. No network is going to change their prime time programming just to cover a video game conference. I've also spent time working in television so I know how that all goes. Nintendo isn't even doing an E3 conference, opting instead to release some nintendo direct videos to the public, so that explains that.

I don't doubt that MS has engaged in some shady tactics with the media, but I just don't see the link with the Spike TV thing. My gut tells me if Sony's conference was at noon rather than 6-9pm (depending on time zone), we'd be seeing it on Spike as well.

I'm no fan of MS, but I have to be fair about it.

Sono4213972d ago (Edited 3972d ago )

Now hold on you guys.. just wait till E3 where Microsoft will announce all of those games you can license ;)

Seriously though, one thing I just thought of.. what if for some reason your Xbox One breaks and you have to get a new one.. then you will always be limited to the 1 hour rule.. your screwed. Also aren't they technically preventing you from buying a used system with the way they set this up? I would think so if they link your account to your system, unless you can somehow deactivate it from the system but doesn't that defeat the whole purpose of these hoops? Wouldn't that be a way around it? So F***ing confusing... seriously... why M$

But imagine later down the road when the Next consoles come out after PS4 and Xbox One and the servers are taken down for Xbox One.. You can't even go back and play old singleplayer games(offline).. so you should just sell them... oh wait...

ShwankyShpanky3972d ago

@fr0sty: re Spike/Sony/primetime

But isn't Spike showing a run of the movie DodgeBall during the Sony presser? It's not like they're skipping Sony to show some hot new primetime material.

Yeah I always enjoy playing the latest Halo game and also gears. I had high hopes that MS might just sway me this gen but Sony just stole the show.

kneon3973d ago (Edited 3973d ago )

Sony isn't stealing the show, it's been handed to them on a silver platter.

I hope they hang on tight and not drop it.

Dee_913972d ago

This is the first time im gonna actually pass on games because of principle, and it sucks a lot.My gamer side keeps telling my integrity to just give up and buy it, but I have to keep telling myself theres a bigger picture and hoping this will make an impact for a better future.
Even though I doubt PS4 will have any type of DRM XBOne has, this goes for PS4 too.
Honestly its bigger than PS4 vs XBOne,its bigger than the future of gaming too. This is about rights and our rights to own what we buy.
You say " oh where I live the internet goes out so I wont have any issues" or these restrictions dont effect me, or we are making this bigger than it really is, we should be making this a bigger deal.

Mr_Nuts3973d ago

I don't think E3 will do any good, they could announce a crap load of games but the negatives out weigh the possistives. Lets not forget they're only doing that to lure us in, after those games you'll hardly see a new IP from them again

TheEvilWithin3973d ago

Umm SOOOO true... Lets Look at Xbox 360 for starts. Mass Effect, Bioshock, Dead Rising, Witcher 2... these are just a few that Xbox used to entice people in then latterly they drop them and BOOM there muti system sellers... Xbox 1 can shove it up there A$$ with there exclusives. If I was to buy an Xbox 1 it would be at yard sale in the junk box for $5 bucks... Hell they might pay ME to take it from them.

AngelicIceDiamond3973d ago (Edited 3973d ago )

Xbox is bad terrible, they lost, anti this, anti that, Sony wins by default blah, blah blah whatever.

Good god its getting old....

All these posts are just filled the same stuff over and over and over and over and over again(annoying right?).

Just don't buy the stupid console boycott it whatever. Instead of parroting the same stuff over and over and over again. This goes for eeeeverybody here.

Good lord its giving me a headache.

EDIT: @Nuts You know what I mean. I'm sick and tired of everyone saying the same thing all the time in EVERY SINGLE article every second.

In the Forza article or in the article where Xbox 360 is suppose to have a huge game coming for it, its the same people spouting the same stuff.

It doesn't help that people on this site already don't like MS to begin with.

Its damn near impossible to properly speculate anything in MS related articles without all the parroting. Listen, literally the only thing that bothers me is the no offline play that's killer, absolutely killer, a deal breaker. That's one MS has to change because internet isn't perfect. I get it, I don't like what MS is doing either.

If MS brings some crazy games I personally won't be able to contain my excitement for the console it will be hard.

You don't hear me saying Anti, this, that Sony wins its too late for MS blah, blah just don't buy it at launch and stop complaining. Again this goes for everyone.

Now what exactly am I defending?

Mr_Nuts3973d ago

Angelic, you do the same thing by trying to defend them and then saying your sick of peoples posts all the time. A little hypocritical...no?

MoonGazing3973d ago

Nope they pretty much blew it i live in NYC and i have bummy TWC as my internet provider and i cannot tell you how many times they F'ed up my internet.Ive had to wait 2-3 days for them to fix it each time so the 24hour check in is a definite NO.

Serial key, it's a 50/50. I may try to look the other way. DRM. I hated EA for doing that to the simcity.
Example: waiting 25 minutes to reconnect. The best part is waiting another 25 minutes if it fail to log the user in their crap servers, reason being it's full. I could see server crash day one on x1, it happen blizzard, EA, Ubisoft. History will repeat itself on X1.

Another insecure fanboy thread and article that has no merit at ll.

LostDjinn3973d ago (Edited 3973d ago )

The article is from a tech site that has nothing to do with videogames. They're simply advising their readers on MSs' policies regarding XBOne as stated by MS.

It's not a smear using grey language like MS "could", "may", "might" or anything of the sort to imply guilt on MSs' behalf (as there is no lack of proof and as such no requirement for the author get creative when writing it). No, this is just an explanation of a straight up set of quotes from MS.

How does that make this piece "Another insecure fanboy" anything? It also decimates your argument that this piece "has no merit at ll" (I'll assume you mean all here shall I?).

Tell you what Frigid. I'll just leave this here http://dictionary.reference... with some friendly advice that you seek help. The impact this is having on you isn't healthy.

If these guys are so paranoid now, what will happen when all games go Digital Downloaded. Who will they resell those and lend them to friends. Before this coming gen is finished, most games will be downloaded. M$ actually has a policy that allows for games to be shared and traded on Xbox 1. That same policy could be applied to downloaded games.

-Mika-3973d ago

No, gamers overreacting to MS policies is what ruining the Xbox one.

KillrateOmega3973d ago (Edited 3973d ago )

No. What's been ruining the Xbox brand as of late has been MS's poor decisions in regards to the handling of the One.

It's nobody's fault, but their own.

V0LT3973d ago (Edited 3973d ago )

Overreacting? LOL! With these polices why should anyone buy this console? They should lease it to customers since you don't own anything you do with it let alone use it offline.

Bethesda Needs to Reduce the Gaps Between New Fallout and Elder Scrolls Releases

Waiting a decade for new instalments in franchises as massive as Fallout and Elder Scrolls feels like a waste.

Microsoft have Obsidian but I feel it's Bethesda who just don't want to play ball as they've always said they want to do it themselves.

Once MS bought Zenimax in 2020 they should have put the Outer Worlds 2 on the back burner, allow Bethesda to finish off its own Space RPG with Starfield (despite totally different tone why have two in your first party portfolio with two developers who's gameplay is a tad similar) and got Obsidian for one of their projects to make a spiritual successor to New Vegas.

When the Elder Scrolls VI is finished Bethesda can then onto the main numbered Fallout 5 themselves.

The Outer Worlds 2 started development in 2019 so putting it on the back burner wouldn't have been the end of the world, they'd have always come back to it once Fallout was done and it would have been nicely spaced out from Starfields release once they had most likely stopped supporting it and all the expansions were released.

If they did this back in 2020 when they bought Zenimax and the game had a good, steady 4 - 5 years development, you might have seen it release in 2025.

We are literally going to be waiting until 2030 at the very earliest for Fallout 5 and all they seem bothered about is pushing Fallout 76.

RaidenBlack11h ago(Edited 11h ago)

Its not just only Todd not playing ball.
Obsidian have made a name for themselves in delivering stellar RPGs, but most famous once have always been sequels/spin-offs to borrowed IPs like KOTOR 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Stick of Truth etc.
Obsidian wants to invest more in their own original IPs like Outer Worlds or Pillars of Eternity with Avowed.
Similar to what Bluepoint & inXile wants to do or Kojima is doing (i.e not involving anymore in Konami's IPs).
So yea, even if New Vegas has the most votes from 3D Fallout fans, Obsidian just wants to do their own thing, like any aspiring dev studio and MS is likely currently respecting that.
But a future Fallout game from Obsidian will surely happen. Founder Feargus Urquhart has already stated an year ago that they're eager to make a new Fallout game with Bethesda, New Vegas 2 or otherwise. Urquhart was the director of the very first 1995's Fallout game after all.
And don't forget Brian Fargo and his studio inXile, as Brian Fargo was the director of Fallout's 1988 predecessor: Wasteland

KyRo8h ago(Edited 8h ago)

Obsidian should take over the FO IP. They're do far better with it than Bethesda who hasn't made a great game for almost 15 years

RaidenBlack2h ago(Edited 2h ago)

@KyRo
So, by 15 years, you mean Fallout 3 was the last great game Bethesda made?
You don't consider Skyrim a good game, which came out 13 years ago?
I'd consider Fallout 4 a pretty decent game as well. It's Story & RPG elements were a bit downgrade from New Vegas but the exploration and shooting on the other hand, were upgrades.
FO76 was disappointing and Starfield could've been better at launch I'll agree.

Duke197h ago(Edited 7h ago)

I disagree. Part of these games is the support for the mod community. If they move to releasing a "next game" every 2 or 3 years, the modding support plummets and the franchises turn into just another run of the mill RPG.

Make the games good enough to withstand the test of time, to keep people coming back to them and expanding on them with mod support.

--Onilink--5h ago(Edited 5h ago)

I dont think anyone is saying they need to come out every 2 years (not to mention almost no game is released that quickly anymore)

By the time Fallout 5 comes out, it will be more than 15 years since Fallout 4 came out (same with ES6 coming out 15 years after Skyrim). Even if you want to use F76 as the metric for the most recent release, that one came out in 2018. It will be a miracle if F5 comes out before 2030

The point is that for a studio that doesnt seem to operate with multiple teams doing several projects at once, that their projects normally take 4-5 years as a minimum, and that now they even added Starfield to the rotation, it becomes a 15+ years waiting period between releases for each series, which doesnt make sense. Imagine that Nintendo only released a mainline Mario or Zelda game every 15 years…

They either need to start developing more than 1 project at a time, let someone else take a crack at one of the IPs or significantly reduce their development times

Duke193h ago(Edited 3h ago)

Why should someone else take a crack at one of the IPs? Look at what happened to Final Fantasy as a recent example - there is pretty clear FF fatigue setting in because they are now pumping out titles in the franchise every few years. Pumping out more games faster doesn't always make a series better.

There are plenty of options to make new games, not just create more titles in the same universe at a faster pace.

-Foxtrot1h ago

"Why should someone else take a crack at one of the IPs"

He's literally just told you why

We're waiting like 15 years before a sequel comes out, it's insane

Skyrim came out in 2011, the next game is expected to come out in 2027 at the earliest so that's 16 years apart while Fallout 4 came out in 2015 and might not release until 2031, again 16 years.

We're fine with Bethesda trying new things and doing new IPs like Starfield but adding a new game to the cycle now means a bigger wait. Also Starfield didn't meet most peoples expectations, can you imagine waiting 15 years or so for a sequel and it's disappointing? It would feel even worse because you would have to wait another 15 years to see if they manage to come back from it.

They need to give it to another developer, we don't need main numbered titles but a spin off of Fallout and Elder Scrolls should be cycled in between the long gaps of the main releases.

Once again you are making out people want these games as quick as possible when all we want is a standard development time of at least 4 years or so rather than waiting 15.

mandf5h ago

Yeah I’m going to say it, who cares about the modding community when making a game? Half the time developers only tolerate modders because they fix there game for them.

Skuletor6h ago

Yeah, let's all advocate for smaller gaps between series' releases, then we'll probably get headlines about how the series have dropped in quality and they could have benefited from more time in the oven. Let them cook.

SimpleSlave5h ago

"how the series have dropped in quality and they could have benefited from more time in the oven" So every Bethesda game then? Got it.

Listen, I would agree if this was about From Software or something, but Bethesda?

🤣

C'mon now. What timeline are you from?

Skuletor3h ago

Think about it, they're already bug filled messes on their current schedule, can you imagine how much worse it would be if they rushed things?

-Foxtrot1h ago

@Skuletor

Who's saying to rush the releases? No one is saying that...

People just don't want to be waiting 15 years for a sequel, they aren't working on the game for that long, you do realise that right? The issue isn't coming down to them working on the game and us "rushing them", it's the fact they are working on other games like Starfield now meaning bigger gaps before they even get started on them.

I bet you any more Elder Scrolls VI only entered full development last year when Starfield was finished despite being announced in 2018.

Duke193h ago

I mean you aren't wrong. People are going to complain about anything

isarai5h ago

Hows about you focus on quality, just a thought 🤷‍♂️

Sciurus_vulgaris4h ago

Bethesda [or Microsoft] would have to reallocate internal and external studios towards fallout and elder scrolls titles. Bethesda has the issue of developing 2 big IPs that are large RPGs on rotation. If you want more Fallout and Elder Scrolls, development will have to be outsourced.
