Fans upset that Kiefer Sutherland is to play Big Boss in MGS 5

Some fans are not pleased that David Hayter is now officially not voicing the character Big Boss in Metal Gear Solid V.

I believe it's a little more than just a voice change. Fan's of anything react bad to anything changing that they love. Say if Breaking Bad last 6 episodes replace Walter for some other actor, people would be dumbfounded and express their dislike, much like now, it's been 15 years with David Hayter.

007 movies do it every 4 movies or so, fans still watch. and actually some prefer the later bonds. some gamers are just too serious about it. the character is still the same it's no big deal, the world isn't ending and you never know it may be better with someone else.

007 is very tangentially linked though. MGS has become a twisted timeline of direct sequels and prequels.

If Keifer was voicing Snake in a whole new timeline, I'd be fine with it. Personally I think MGS needs a new timeline regardless... we know how it ends with MGS4, these prequels are a bit useless now.

You have to with Bond though, like Doctor Who because they've been going on for years, 50 years nearly for both of them and the main actors want to do new things or end up getting too old. David Hayter didn't want to go anywhere.

But where coming onto the last game, I mean this is a prequel which is pushing it but after this game with the story arc closed after MGS4 where else is there left to go. You would need to reboot it or do an alternative timeline or something so really I don't see why they didn't use Hayter one last time

I think the problem was they were wanting Hayter to do a Sutherland type voice... and he can't. Snake is Kojima's character and if Kojima wants snake to sound more rugged (which hayter can't do naturall--very forced) then it's his call.

I still think Metal Gear Solid 6 will be a remake/re-imagining of MG1 and 2, so I think Hayter will be back.

Completely agree. I love David Hayter, think he's an awesome guy. I'll always have good memories of MGS games but I'm totally fine with a voice actor who sounds like the character looks.

I thought Hayter's voice was great as Old Snake. He really sounded like a tired old mercenary Solid Snake had become. It was great.

But when I played Peace Walker, that didn't sound nearly as good because Big Boss is a different kind of character. He felt emotionless and tired. Every MGS fan knows that Big Boss is a charismatic character and he didn't sound like it at all in Peace Walker.

After seeing the MGS5 trailer where Big Boss basically saw his army die, I had doubts how Hayter could voice all that emotion.

I just think using Keifer Sutherland is the wrong choice but I would only have been happy with Richard Doyle. Sutherland's voice just doesn't fit. He's not a voice actor and he uses the same voice in everything he's in.

As we should be. To have Kojima come out and state some bs of a reason.... Some of us have been with this game since the very start. The whole point was to grow with the story and we knew who was behind the characters. We've known there's been a issue since the MGS movie was announced. Which Kojima also stated David would not be a part of that. Maybe Kojima should have stuck to his word and ended it at MGS4. Now it's just become another game mixed in with the world of many.

Thats what I don't get it's NOT a reboot, he's probably going to have to reboot it after this since the story arc is now finished. Hell a prequel for MGSV was pushing it, the last game in the MGS main timeline and Hayter won't be involved

I know some people don't have a problem with it, but it's like changing the Voice Actor for Nathan Drake, Commander Sheppard, Glados, Captain Price or any other iconic character. The Voice Actors make and bring the characters to life and give it personality, they are the character.

What would happen if they change the Voice Actor for Woody in Toy Story or other characters in movies and TV shows?

MGS 5 isn't a reboot, it's a continuation and Big Boss still looks like Snake.

Koji wants to create a more realistic product and to do this he decided he needed to capture real emotion not just voice emotion.

Before he used words to describe how he was feeling now he wants to visuals to fill in some of the words. This can't be done by just a voice actor you need someone that can show it with his face as well.

He spells it out to you in the video if you watch it all... not rocket science.

David Hayter will always be Snake...I do not mind Sutherland voice acting as Big Boss although I will miss the Hayter's voice in MGS:V. I think Keifer will do an excellent job, and I am interested to see how this plays out within the game. From a business stand point, I think it was an excellent move. Why wouldn't Kojima use his resources in Hollywood. I think Keifer in a big game and the effects it will have for Kojima in Hollywood is just a benefit. Now if Keifer was cast as Snake in the movie, then I would not be too thrilled about that...haaa

As much as I am going to miss the familiarity of hearing Hayter's voice as Snake, I trust Kojima's decision making process more. MGS is his creation afterall and his track record of brilliance speaks for itself. I am sure the decision to move on from David was a tough choice, but one that needed to be made to convey the story as Hideo intends it to be seen and heard. Hideo said that he needs someone who can convey the subtle facial emotions he needs during simultaneous voice recording & mo-cap. As much as I love David's voice as Snake, let's consider that he may not (in Hideo's opinion) have the combined talents of a voice and physical actor as someone such as Andy Serkis who does great conveying emotions when mo-capped (think Gollum/Caesar/King Kong). Hideo's vision is to make this MGS experience more mature and photo realistic. As I have gone back and played some of the older MGS games (which I still love), I feel that David's dialogue can come across as a little forced...not to the degree of a William Shatner, but a little overdone sometimes. I accepted it then, b/c games were not at the point they are now. I think it is okay to mature as a gamer and the next-gen tech allows for so many more minute details which raises the bar and expectations. Kojima has always been one to push this bar even higher and is a perfectionist, even if it means that he has to move on from an icon in his series. Maybe the whole Kojima trolling us is true and Hayter will get to play the "other" Snake if the time periods do overlap as some have suggested. Either way, we just need to chill and see what is brought to the table. In Hideo I trust!

I'm going to probably get a lot of dislikes, but even though I absolutely LOVE the Metal Gear Solid franchise, David Hayter isn't the most talented voice actor out there. In 1998 he was great and gave off this 80's action vibe, obviously because of Escape from New York. But, in 2013 it's a little cheesy, honestly.

I would have had no problem at all with Hayter or Richard Doyle playing Snake in Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain, but I think Keifer will do an excellent job. Granted, I wouldn't put it past Kojima to pull a fast one and Keifer isn't actually Snake and he and Hayter have been trolling us :)
