Prequels, Are They Worth A Story To Be Told?

Super PolyPixel - Prequels. Instead of a continuation of a video game such as Batman: Arkham City, we get a prequel; a back-story to an entire franchise, story, and or character. With the announcement and hype of the upcoming Batman: Arkham Origins I couldn’t help to wonder how yet again a third entry into a video game is a prequel instead of a continuation.

Of course. We always wonder how certain things came to be in story based games. I hate playing games that try an tell a story but leave u thinking wtf was there even a story to begin with. I think it changes as u get older. When u are young stories dont really matter. U just want to play the game. As u growup & mature stories play a big part of games because like a movie, u will either remember it as a bad movie, an ok movie, or it was good, or just plain out a masterpiece. U never forget those things. Thats just my opinion.

I think it depends on the depth of story writing in the game. If a game was written in such a way that there is already this big background story to a character/faction than a prequel is possible.

The best examples of this are Metal Gear and God of War and they've been done...successfully. In both cases the canon took on a life of it own and you had entire timelines built (MGS) in which to work from.

Now with some games the story is too shallow (games that concentrate more on gameplay rather than story, characters, or plot) and would not lend well to a prequel. The prequel would end up as shallow if not more than the game it was preceding. So in these cases it would just be pointless and you might as well just make it a "reboot".

Also, another thing to consider is how much a game's story has been drawn out. If we've already stretched the story over five, six, or seven games making a prequel may come off as beating a dead horse. It really comes down to how the people are playing the sixth, or so, iteration of the game. Are they in it for the mythos that has been created or just the gameplay? I can only give Star Wars as an extreme example in this case of the top of my head.

Depth of story is definitely important. The problem is sometimes they don't go far back enough.

Perfect example is Gears of War: Judgment. Don't get me wrong - I have been having an absolute blast with the multiplayer, despite its huge difference from past games (I know I'm in the minority on that, but whatevs). But my biggest problem with it was that it didn't delve deep enough into the backstory in terms of time.

They could have actually gone into the Pendulum Wars instead of immediately afterward. Heck - they could have had an entire prequel trilogy if they did that. There's a ton of story out there that would have to be a prequel to the prequel at this point if they wanted to tell it, which is silly.

Also, the timing was bad. Gears 3 was only out for about a year and a half when Judgment was released. People weren't ready for another trip into the Gears universe. Add this in with the lack of depth (or rather, the lack of delving deep enough into an existing story) did nothing to serve the game or series as a whole.

Prequels tell an important backstory, example: mgs 3.

creatchee3972d ago

MGS3 definitely did it right, but it kind of defied being a prequel in a way by being part 3 in the chronology. A technicality to be sure, but a point nonetheless.

AznGaara3972d ago

Yeah, prequels have been getting a bad rep lately but if the world is big enough then a prequel could be a big deal. Like you said MGS3 was a great game. Another example of an amazing prequel is KH: Birth by Sleep.

crimsonfox3972d ago

When I finished metal gear solid 3... All I wanted was a prequel with The Joy and the cobra unit. maybe ending when she meets Jack and is an instructor. metal gear would be a great television series. there are alot of prequels to be told haha

Brazz3972d ago

Metal Gear Solid 3, the best of all metal gears!and a prequel... Prequels can be great for sure!

TongkatAli3972d ago

No way man MGS on the PS1, best soundtrack, boss cast and storyline. Kojima still hasn't topped that game to this day.

GameSpawn3972d ago

I really liked MGS3, but combined with the story of MGS:PW (Peace Walker) and the back story mentioned in MGS4 you have a whole new understanding of Big Boss as REALLY begin to like the guy. I really think MGS3 should always be taken together with Peace Walker as they are Big Boss's "saga" or "story arc". Combine with that the soon to be released (hopefully) Ground Zeroes & MGSV.

With MGS1 Big Boss was always portrayed as this big antagonist, but as the "Solid" series' canon became more and more complex, so did the protagonists and antagonists to the point that there really is no one single "bad guy". Everyone is human and has their own agenda, ideals, and means to an end. Zero and Big Boss wanted the same thing in the end, but they just over time diverged in the means to achieve that end. (If you haven't guessed I'm trying to phrase all this to minimize spoiling the series for those who haven't played.)

God I love Metal Gear.

Sketchy_Galore3972d ago

I used to love prequels. I love to actually see some legendary event that I had only heard about in the previous game or get some new important perspective on a character I hadn't fully understood before. Sadly it's hard to deny most prequels these days are nothing like this and have become more a case of, 'Hey look, it turns out that this character went on another adventure before or between the big meaningful quests you heard about and just never mentioned it in either of those games despite the fact that it was an even bigger scale adventure than the ones you've seen before.'.

pr0t0typeknuckles3972d ago

there wer only 2 prequels i played that i actually felt were good and those were obviously DMC 3, and MGS 3,because they actually showed how those characters came to be in the other games, but prequels like god of war ascension for example wasnt needed,if anything it would have been better had they had kratos before he became a servant of aries, fighting the wars and how it affected his families fellings for him that would have been a better prequel than what we got.

Ranking the Devil May Cry Series

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Upon finally finishing Devil May Cry 5 recently - after it spent several years on my “I’ll play that soon” list - I considered giving it a fittingly-named Late Look article. However, considering that this was indeed the final piece I was missing in the DMC puzzle, I decided to instead take this opportunity to take a look back at the entirety of this genre-defining series and rank the entries. What also made this a particularly tempting notion was that while most high-profile series have developed fairly evenly over time, with a few bumps on the road, the history of Devil May Cry has, at least in my eyes, been an absolute roller coaster, with everything from total disasters to action game gold."

First to last for me...3,4,5,1,2.

VersusDMC5h ago

Me leaving it out should be telling of my thoughts on it. Better than 2 as a DMC game.

Still a good game though.

Friendlygamer6h ago

3,1,4,5 to me, never played 2. 5 gameplay is amazing but level design was really disappointing to me, just a bunch of plain arenas, the story felt like a worse written rehash of the 3rd and the charater models looked weird ( specially the ladies ). Another problem with 5 was that there was not enough content for 3 charaters so I could never really familiarize with any of them

monkey6025h ago(Edited 5h ago)

2.
Dmc.
4.
5.
1.
3.

God DMC2 was an awful game.
And in case this isn't obvious it goes worst to best

Yui_Suzumiya4h ago

1 and DmC. The rest are unimportant.

DarXyde3h ago

Order changes depending on your focus. I tend to focus on gameplay/fun factor, so...

5, 3, 1, 4, 2.

I really didn't like 4 but commend Dante's weapon diversity. The retreading of old ground was pretty unacceptable to me.

But even then... Still more enjoyable than 2 for me

The best Batman Arkham game still isn’t on PS5, and that’s a problem

Suicide Squad Kill the Justice League is almost here, but I can't revisit the best Arkhamverse game on PS5 without sacrificing quality.

Not a fan of Orgins. Blame it on the absence of Conroy & Hamill. Blame it on the lack of atmosphere compared to Asylm. Hell blame it the devs thst dicked over Wii U owners like me that purchased the game only for support be dropped as a thank you to me. It's better than Knight but that's not saying much. I don't care for that entry either.

Rebel_Scum95d ago

tbh buying a game like that for WiiU should’ve been an obvious non-purchase when it existed on better hardware.

Cacabunga95d ago

Origins is amazing..
my favorite Batman is Batman and Robin on mega drive.. an HD REMASTER of that would still look glorious

ZeekQuattro95d ago

I got it launch. Kinda hard to go back. I'm supposed to know they were going to drop support months after the fact. 🤣

Exvalos95d ago

You sound like a salty fanboy, that it didn't come to your precious plastic of choice. It's not the developers fault Nintendo continues making underpowered hardware. It's our fault because we keep buying it. Yes I say (we) I'm part of the problem as well.

ZeekQuattro95d ago

I have a PS3 and a Wii U. How was I a salty fanboy? I bought the game on the system I wanted it for.

Rebel_Scum95d ago

Nah my comment has nothing to do with whether you’d know or not that they’d drop support.

Buying any AAA game of that era for a WiiU you should’ve known you’d be sacrificing graphics and load times.

LucasRuinedChildhood96d ago

It's solid but Origins is definitely not the best Arkham game.

LoveSpuds95d ago

Smacks of hyperbole to me, talk about clutching at straws to create some drama around PS5!!

generic-user-name95d ago

Titles like these are designed to get you to come in, go to their comment section and tell them how they're so wrong so they can boost their numbers.

Phoenix7695d ago

Even though its not the best arkham game in the series, its still an enjoyable game in its own right. What it do really well at though, was the crime investigations scenes. Which imo, were the best of the franchise.

goldwyncq95d ago

I don’t know about best game but it definitely has the best story and boss fights.

boing195d ago

Never played it and recently I've finally tried it via cloud on psn. It's not the best for sure, but it ain't bad either.
