Microsoft is once again backing on the fact that their target audience has always been individuals who do not understand technology.

This has gone further with their exit from the hardcore gaming market; into the casual Kinect area.

They can bullshit about their 300,00 instances of virtual servers; passing it off as actual 300,00 dedicated hardware that doubles up as a magical CPU and RAM that will add to a 400% boost on the internal parts of the Xbone; but in reality most people know that such a fabricated system just isn't possible.

Blow is just one of many of us developers shaking our heads at this ridiculous crap. Not only have they shut many of us out; now they are fabricating specs. Good luck working on this horseshit platform.

You're misunderstanding this. The Xbox One and PS4 will both be 64bit. The limit you're talking about only applies to 32bit systems and even then that only applies to non-PAE modes.

There's nothing special going on here. For years we've had 64-bit processors that use the x86 instruction set, but with 64-bit extensions. That's what will be inside the PS4 and XB One.

That they're going to sink money into a 300k server farm when the actual servers will be the X1s they sell to people. That people are going to be contributing to it whether they know or want to, and then very likely will have to pay to access it.

And Kinect is just as worse: people will have to use, be measured and recorded, and MS will use that information to sell advertisers who in turn will pay MS for ads which are then targeted towards Kinect users. They make money of the deal in all forms.

Consumers may not get much out of it, but MS certainly will.

Microsoft is counting their current Azure servers and misrepresenting them to pretend as if they are exclusive to the Xbox One. If they were using Azure; they would not have access to 80% of those servers. Even then; I'm being generous.

Next, they are fabricating the server count to suggest that they have 300,000 physical servers. In actuality; they are likely running hundreds to thousands of virtual server instances on a much more reduced amount of physical servers.

Keeping this simple; it's a marketing ploy. Anyone can create hundreds to thousands of virtual servers; then claim them as a "large amount of servers". Then after they are done with their marketing gimmick; reduce the count down to something that would actually function (that amount of virtual servers would run horribly).

It's complete smoke and mirrors; most people are not falling for it.

I'm not even going to touch on the ridiculous notion that the cloud would give a 400% performance boost. It's quite the contrary; as you would be bogged down by network speeds. Ultimately relying on the cloud would worsen your performance.

@ Gildarts: When Braid was first released, he got to experience what it was like for an indie developer to release something on Xbox Live. Jonathan himself has stated in the past that Microsoft's certification process is complete BS. He knows what it's like to work with them, not for them. Notice I said "with", because that is what he was doing when he approached Microsoft with Braid. It was an unnecessary process and every indie developer who's been turned away by Microsoft agrees.

As for the server issue, it's still just a claim that requires evidence. So go ahead and prove it'll work.

They most likely aren't running physical servers. It wouldn't be very good cost wise no matter how much money you have. Most likely they truly are all virtual servers. Now depending on the server specs you can run multiple servers on a single piece of hardware and that is where the beauty of Virtual servers are. It is the same as having physical servers without the extra cost in hardware and power consumption.

U don't have a Kinect, because if u do, then u should know that the voice command is the best thing about kinect and it is fast currently, u don't need K2 to show that it is fast. As happy as I am that he seems to have a good relationship with Sony, I can't honestly take what he says against Microsoft without a grain of salt. He may be accurate, and I didn't even think about virtual servers, but I'm waiting to see more information about the servers.

I will say this, Microsoft has a ton of cash and they could build a 300,000 server infrastructure I would think - but it would be costly. I suppose it's really not out of the question that they would "lie without lying." If they have 30,000-50,000 servers with multiple virtual serves in each one, that's a BIG difference between 300,000 physical servers. I am definitely interested to know more.

Of course is a lie, all these servers are for storing and streaming not for processing. Nobody, with the actual technology. can use a remote server to help at data processing in real time, much less for games at 1080 and 60 FPS.

Thats my understanding of it too. It can be used to stream pre rendered things, but to compute in real time, remotely to your console is laughable to me. If possible, it would still lack the infrastructure to be widely used enough for mass audience.

Microsoft has been doing a lot of dodging of stuff ever since the reveal. The 'used games', the always online, not showing the specs, & now this. Why can't they just be upfront about these issues that matter to gamers/people who want to know.

MS have an absolutely gargantuan compute muscle. They are rolling servers out literally by the container load for Windows Azure and Office 365. (They are built inside specialist containers with air con modules bolted on top, I think its 2000 servers per container) Even if the 300,000 servers are virtual as long as they have the compute power to server them (which they do) then they can all keep running, its not 300,000 guests on 1 host LOL chumps.

Here is the problem with Mr. Blow. As we all know he stated he has no clue before the Xbone was revealed anything about the console. He is not in the know anymore and MS has cut all ties with him. There is a relationship that has soured and because of that you have to take anything that comes out of his mouth with a grain of salt.

Now lest talk about 300K servers. Even if this number is made up of virtual servers which Mr. Blow has no clue, hell he could not even state he heard a rumor. Instead this is a opinion from a guy who has no involvement with MS anymore throwing out his opinion like its fact. People forget that MS has been investing in their cloud technology for years with the azure platform. They have data centers in just about every major state and around the world.

Is this server farm just for the Xbone, well heck no but it can be leverage to for that platform just like the other cloud platform.

On the issue of virtual, yes MS will be using virtual servers. Most high end server farms use virtual servers because when you have a physical server that has 64 processors, GBs of memory and storage you can create virtual servers and divide up the resources.

With technology today, you can bring online and off line virtual servers depending on load and as for operations, there isn't a difference any person would know. What Jonathan has shone is his total lack of understanding of server technology on this subject which I deal with every day.
