You Don’t Hate the Xbox One, You’re Just Jealous

Gamers seem to hate the Xbox One. If you wade into a comments section or ask a man-on-the-street at your local Mountain Dew distributer, you’ll hear a variety of reasons why the Xbox One is not for gamers—why it’s a horrible misstep, presumed dead on arrival. Some of these criticisms will ring a little truer than others, but none really tap into what’s really eating at the gaming elite. They’re mad that they’re not the center of attention.

I'm not a Sony fanboy. I'm a PC guy. I was excited for the Xbox reveal, but all I saw was a cable box with sports, voice commands, and Skype (which I have on my PC and Vita already). Sorry, I'm a gamer, I don't give a crap about that stuff. MS clearly doesn't care about us at this point, if that's the most important thing to them. (Which it clearly is, if they chose to show those for a majority of the time at the reveal.)

Sure, we saw some gaming related things. No actual live demos though, just pre-made videos.

All this site does is overreact. It's even getting hell for not being backwards compatible yet neither is the ps4. They clearly stated they were to show off hardware in the event and games in E3, with 15 exclusives. Yet they pretend they dont know that and persist with the 'no games' argument.

Is Gaf full of PS fanboys too? Twitter? Are indie devs PS fanboys? Jim Sterling? N4G isn't the only place this sentiment exists. The show was a joke and set a horrible precedent, after months of "just wait and see." We waited. We saw. Many did not like what they saw. The practices currently are anti-consumer and ridiculous. And if Sony puts the same ones into practice, that proves its not just MS that has lost focus on gamers next gen.

Mandatory online checks, mandatory kinect, no upgradeable hardware, indies gotta find publishers, mandatory hard drive installation, paid online play, used game fees and it won't allow use of xbox 360 headsets

I think the lack of games isn't the entire issue here. I think a combination of issues depending on who you are - a huge focus on Kinect, television integration, unrelated tv series, anticonsumer practices, used game fees, games tied to accounts, lack of BC all add up to one hell of a mess. If you're complaining about JUST a lack of games, that's silly. But if you're looking at the whole, there's plenty to shake your head at with regards to the new Xbox, and possibly next gen in general.

Also, a HORRIBLE show doesn't preclude a good system - but face it, MS has been "on top" for years now, and "other fanboys" had to deal with "giant enemy crabs, $599, riiidge racer, etc." Turnabout is fair play, if you can't take it, don't dish it out (though I'm not condoning it, it's all silly).

It's because most of this is still a big confusion. Barely any information was made clear by MS, and they stated several times that they are yet to announce details, but this is adequate enough for the fanboys to abominate indefinitely. Overreaction much?

I'm a huge Xbox fan. I own both consoles, but I buy everything on Xbox except for exclusives. I love Xbox Live, all of my friends are Xboxers, I think the controller is better, everything...

To give you an idea of how much I favored the 360... I recently used a smartphone app to scan bar codes and create a catalog of my 360 and PS3 games. I have 22 PS3 games, and 179 360 games. lol

I also have said many times that this site is overrun by Playstation Fanboys.

Now... With all of that in mind. I kind of think the Xbox One looks like a piece of crap right now, too. I am waiting to hear about the games at E3, of course, but everything they have shown so far is total garbage.

I am not going to use it as an overlay for my TiVo. That is just useless to me.

I am not going to SPEAK to my TV when I could quickly and quietly just press a button on my remote instead.

I'm not going to use Skype, and I don't plan on having Internet Explorer on the side of the screen taking up part of my TV when I just could just look something up on my iPad, instead.

In other words, pretty much everything they have shown me so far is stuff I will never use.

Some of the other negatives floating around about it I am indifferent about.

Indie games? I couldn't give two shits about Indie games. I don't play them.

Used games? Couldn't care less, I buy all of my games new and don't ever resell them or loan them out.

Internet required? Fine with me, I'm always connected anyway.

Anyway, my point is that it's not just the Sony Fanboys hating on the One, they are just the most vocal about it.

I'm just curious though, would you be okay with Microsoft making you pay a fee to play used, or even a friend's game? I'll say right now, I will not support that practice. No matter if it comes from Microsoft, Nintendo, or Sony. Any console that forces you to do that is one that I will not buy.

That was the one thing I had a problem with, but at the end of the day for me personally, it isn't a deal breaker because of the amount of used games I buy. I've also looked at previous console launches and noticed that I never bought a single used game in the first two years of a consoles life, mainly because the good games, the exclusives, big name games, well they don't go down enough in price to justify a used purchase in my opinion.

If I have the choice to buy a $60 new and support a developer, or spend $50 and not support them, I'll buy new every time.

I do agree it's BS if it turns out you cannot let a friend borrow a game though, and as I said, I'm against it, just not a deal breaker for me personally.

360's RROD
360's pay to play online
Xbox Live subscription on top of app subscription such as Netflix ect.
XboxOne's talk of blocked used games ect.

Why would any gamer want to see a gaming company not focus on gaming at a gaming console reveal?

He calls it jealousy. To me, it's concern. There's nothing wrong with gamers not wanting to see the few gaming-focused hardware companies left drift from gaming. We've got Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo left to provide the platforms where gaming is at its best. We've already seen Nintendo fumble, despite them having the best intentions, and it's not what gamers or creators seem to want, so it's left Sony and Microsoft as the last two companies most capable of catering to the kind of gamer that treats shows like E3 like Christmas, and giving developers the platform they need to create stuff as amazing as what we come to expect.

We've now seen Microsoft dedicate a huge portion of their console reveal to everything but gaming. They've dedicated a large portion of their hardware's resources to non-gaming. Even with something like Kinect, we saw Microsoft focus their internal development heavily on that, while the number or traditional games they produced suffered. Microsoft has even fallen back on including free apps in a subscription package as a means of justifying paying for a gaming service.

Given that, I don't see how anyone can sit back and say hardcore gaming isn't getting pushed aside, and not be concerned with how far MS wants to go with this. Sure, you can say a focus on entertainment doesn't take away from games. You can say that investing in multimedia doesn't mean it's cutting into gaming investment. But it's not that simple. Only 5 of 8GB of RAM in the Xbox One being dedicated to gaming says multimedia cutting into gaming has happened.

Call it jealousy if you want, just to spin it in a bad light. At the end of the day, the number of companies that produce great gaming-dedicated hardware can be counted on one hand, and there is nothing wrong with gamers making it damn clear what we want, to make sure the few gaming-dedicated companies we have left don't lose sight of that, thinking we (and our gaming dollars) are just going to follow them to whatever they believe to be greener pastures.

I don't buy a GAMING console to watch TV on it because I buy one to play games on it. Taking the remote and pressing 2 buttons isn't that hard to do that I would wish my console can switch directly. I don't play a game and switch a few minutes to watch TV and switch back. And I sure as hell don't see the need of having a gaming console wasting resources on that crap if more CPU and RAM could be used instead to make games better.
