Why Xbox One Is Better Than PS4 - Hint: The Future of Consoles Isn't Gaming

We've now seen the next generation of major gaming consoles unveiled (well, mostly - we still don't know what the PS4 console will actually look like), and it looks like the Xbox One is ready for the future, while the PS4 sadly clings on to the bygone---and less profitable---era of hardcore gaming.

lmao!

The Simpsons sure have got the Xbox One right...

Future of consoles isn't gaming? Then I want no part in the future, and you will be surprised who else agrees with me.

Hint: the highest-selling console of last gen was the one with the fewest non-gaming features.

Getting beyond ridiculous

Blastoise3983d ago (Edited 3983d ago )

Agreed.
I wish we could get rid of this thought that gaming console has to be more than just a gaming console. We don't need apps and TV stuff, it should be a an extra and not a focus

I don't understand why people would buy an Xbox with these Tv functions when they could just buy a cable box and use a remote for a lot less of the price.

People keep saying the Xbox is all in one (hence the name)this kind of complete living room experience but so far it seems like they're the jack of all trades and master of none. I can't see hardcore gamers buying them

is anybody's guess if you really think about it.

@xheavyx...no it doesnt. Both ms and sony have made a general statement that used games will be supported.

Both just need to disclose more info on how those used games are attainable.

MS did what they had to...just disnt announce it right. MS's first priority is its OS and the its future. They know the future isn't desktop PCs so they must get out ahead of it. Luckily for them Google and Apple have basically failed at getting ahold of the livingroom market. MS has a huge unstall base with the xb ox and must go the direction they r going.

That being said, they should have used the initial announcement to assauge the fear that theor core base has. They should hav started and ended with games...tech bwing the middle content. And they should hav answered more questions. Once they took care of the base, then they can move forward and begin to market to everyone else. Instead, they left an overall negative feeling with those that saw the reveal and the word spreads. They did it backwards.

I will buy a ps4 initially but will probably buy an xbox one at some point afterwards. Its too early as most reveal will be at e3 for both but I believe that the xbox one will be fine and I believe that there is room for both.

PLASTICA-MAN3983d ago (Edited 3983d ago )

You know it may be true, Microsoft chose the name XBOX from the beginning, they were aiming for this moment and future, the "X" and "BOX": "X" in mathematics means a variable and can be anything and you can put anything in a "BOX". Now the "BOX"is a DVR and a TV Tuner and the "X" is your voice that changes with every user. Sony main focus was/is/will be always about gaming first hence the name "PLAY" + "STATION". What first comes in mind when you hear the world "PLAY" is playing, games of course, but further investigations can lead to find that the word "PLAY" can be accomplice to playing music, movies, videos or any other media. Without forgetting that a "STATION" is very BIG compared to a "BOX": a station can be a radio station, TV station, train station, military station, gas station, magazine station, work station... anything that everybody uses and goes to in his all day life. So a "STATION" is something NECESSARY in one's life because have you ever seen someone going to any "STATION" bringing a huge "BOX" with him? Also, as far as I know, in psychology, the majority of people have tendency to get affection for the word "PLAY" rather than the exhausting "X" in mathematics.

PS: I am either a philosopher or drunk or neither of those or just following the logics of this article's author aka a "gaminge" machine is not for gaming meaning the logic of absurdity in mathematics or the logics of the non-logics.

Nodoze3983d ago

Correction the box is NOT a DVR and it is NOT a tuner. This means that you have to waste power and space with your existing cable box (you know the tuner and the DVR). The only thing the Xbox does is change the channels from the HDMI in.

In other words it is USELESS as a cable/sat box.

Who in the hell watches live TV anymore?

Gratisfaction3983d ago

Where is that video from!

I laughed so damn hard on this!!!

kneon3983d ago

@Nodoze

That's why I've started calling it a set top box accessory since it doesn't do much on it's own.

So Microsoft's real competition is companies like Cisco, Motorola etc. that already make set top boxes with much of the same functionality.

The cable companies have no interest in someone like Microsoft, Google or Apple co-opting their networks so expect the STBs to continue to add features over the coming years.

Autodidactdystopia3983d ago

I used to like Microsoft.

They have been added to the list of ongoing disappointments

1 Tool not releasing a new album cause maynard is a stuck up turd who wants to work on garbage music like puscifer

2 Valve promising up 3 episodes of hl 2 and just giving up midway and on top of that waiting like 26 years with no word on anything at all

3 Microsoft ruining the good thing it had with windows 7 so that they could release the trash windows 8 and later windows blue

4 Msoft just ditching the gaming community by giving up entirely on what their supporters want and concentrating on fat redneck sports fans who are gullible enough to let a fuckin hal9000 in their living rooms to watch/record everything they fukin do.

what is wrong with the world these days haha :)

DatNJDom813983d ago

As a latino, I am ashamed of this article.

ProjectVulcan3983d ago (Edited 3983d ago )

Sony didn't show off their box when they announced their new machine. Major Nelson I believe said sarcastically 'that's one way to launch your new games console' referring to the lack of the box on display.

What was Microsoft way to show off their new games console? Show hardly any games? Dohhhhh!

I know I know. It isn't e3. But showing off a games console with hardly any games.....That is surely far more stupid way to launch a games console.

They showed off enough everything else. Utter madness.

kparks3983d ago (Edited 3983d ago )

Ahhhh hahahahaha! Them gifs are hilarious!

ArchangelMike3983d ago

ahahaa that made me laugh so much... keep em coming guys :)

morganfell3983d ago (Edited 3983d ago )

Seriously. The people defending MS over this used game business is over the top. If you can buy a disc and put it in you machine and have it play ONLY AFTER PAYING THE RETAIL PRICE OF THE GAME then that IS NOT allowing used game sales.

And being able to sell them only on the MS network and make any money isn't true used game sales. You are now at the mercy of what one company thinks that game is worth.

I guess by that thinking a car with no motor is a valid form of transportation and being able to trade in said car ONLY to the original dealership for any profit at all is true a resale.

malol3983d ago

Obviously the writer thinks the future of gaming is cable TV.

DonFreezer3982d ago

No the amount of ps fanboys bashing Microsoft for things Sony might do to is pathetic not this. You think developers will let Microsoft ban used games on the One and not on the PS4?Are you that stupid?

Boody-Bandit3982d ago (Edited 3982d ago )

The gaming audience should dictate the direction the manufacturer goes, not vice versa. A gaming consoles primary focus should be "GAMING 1ST" and every thing else an after thought.

@morganfell
I think it's sad and obvious that 1 or multiple mods have it in for you. You have without question some of the most insightful post over the years yet you sit at one bubble regardless of how many times you have been marked with helpful or well said post. It just proves how ridiculously broken and 1 sided N4Gs system truly is.

According to this here perfectly sound damage control, the future of console gaming is, in fact, (hint hint) irrelevant interests.

Who needs games when you could watch The Price Is Right?
Who needs games when you could watch movies?
Who needs games when you could watch sports?

Games are a thing of the past...

The One is here, ladies and gentlemen. Xbox! Watch, but don't play

S2Killinit3983d ago (Edited 3983d ago )

Nicxel3983d ago

I think that article is implying that the future is "MORE than just gaming." That sounds much more logical, and they're right.

ceballos77mx3983d ago

Amen been playing since the intellevision, and now a company that's barely been in gaming is saying that game consoles don't matter, damn shame.

@thechosenone

I imagine that your laughter is similar to laughter a few years back when cynical people had just found out that the future of cellphones wasn't actually having conversations on them.

I wonder if they're still laughing.

I wonder if you'll still be laughing in a few years.

TKCMuzzer3983d ago

Interesting but not really that true, people may not talk as much on them but they do have conversations in many different ways and this includes facebook and twitter. It's still communicating with other people, which is essentially what phones are about.
If you like games, why would you buy a console that you thought would end up not being about games, surely that's what consoles are about.

Rainstorm813983d ago (Edited 3983d ago )

That's the thing, they didnt lessen phone capabilities with smartphones...they gave you a new option that never existed.

XB1 isn't doing that, it's a glorified voice activated universal remote, smartphones essentially gave us computers in our hands.

What is XB1 bringing to the table that a DVR or Cable box doesn't ....Skype?...Samsung Tvs come with cameras Skype and motion controls.

I'm sorry but early adopters of game consoles are GAMERS and gamers' console priorities are gaming and games. The road MS is going down they don't seem to care about either

Samsung motion control TV - http://youtu.be/5C1nADiC6OE

Nodoze3983d ago

So you think the Xbox one is on par with the introduction of the smart phone?

Are you serious? If so pass along some of the sh1t you are smoking cause it MUST be good.

The XBone doesn't even function as a DVR or a TV tuner. In other words all it functions as is a pass through channel changer with an online program guide (break out the kazoos). So in other words they FAILED at producing a Tuner/DVR AND a games console.

Wow I know I want to rush right out to buy yet another box that connects to the existing box that I already use/rent from my provider. WTF is the point of that??

FAIL

creatchee3983d ago

@Rainstorm81

"That's the thing, they didnt lessen phone capabilities with smartphones...they gave you a new option that never existed. "

Okay, fair enough. But tell me how XBOX ONE is lessening gaming capabilities to compromise for its other endeavors. And no, don't mention used game licensing or RAM differences VS a PS4.

The fact is, we haven't seen games yet. Or at least, no longform gameplay. MICROSOFT TOLD US THAT WE WOULDN'T BE SEEING MOST OF THE GANES UNTIL E3. That last sentence is in all caps because everybody is forgetting that simple fact, whether willfully or otherwise.

So how can you say that the gaming aspect is being lessened if we haven't even been shown that aspect AND were told that we wouldn't see it for two weeks? Or is it just a "feeling" you get?

inmusicutrust3983d ago

Rainstorm I agree. Tvs are pushing smart tv functions too much, I feel that xb1 cannot compete with that in the long run, each year the market will be more saturated with tvs that feature these services built in. Obviously there will still be those who want the extra perks but most will be satisfied with what they have. Look at tivo now that most cable boxes have built in dvr. Still around and selling but not like when it was a revolutionary product.

TheSaint3983d ago

So you don't text people on your phone and have a CONVERSATION with them?

nukeitall3983d ago

I find it hilarious that the vast majority here doesn't get it (or willfully ignore it), but why do people use Netflix on the PS3 or Xbox 360, when they can do so on PC?

You need to separate the can and will!

Furthermore, the Xbox One does solve a major problem with current cable boxes and that is finding what I want with it.

It's painfully slow to find what I want on their slow @ss cable box with the pretty confusingly labeled remote.

Just like when Xbox Live launched, you could play online on PC with voice hat, but Xbox Live brought it together and we know what happened.

This is a similar attempt at transforming your living room experience and there is some serious technology behind this to make it happen.

I think the era of high performance gaming consoles only is bygone and the Wii U is an example of this.

An iPhone isn't a dedicated gaming device, yet there probably more people gaming on it than the PS Vita.

Heck, I'm finding children of parents I know aren't asking for a Nintendo 3DS or a PS Vita, they are asking for an iPad!

I think the long term, Sony will try to follow as best they can the path MS is laying granting their hardware can keep up.

pkb793983d ago

@nukeitall
if you find a cable box remote confusing then the Xbox one is certainly for you.
This central entertainment hub approach is an antiquated notion., families don't sit and watch TV together, they may watch a movie together once in a while but pretty much everyone had access to their own screen to watch what they want. Even my 3 year old can work netlixs on the wii.

People watch tv with smart phones in hand and tablets on laps for all their social media needs.

Xbox one bring nothing new to the table, it just bottle necks it in one box for the family to fight over.

one more point, some of us where playing socom online with the ps2 long before xbox live showed up, it was free and it was awesome.

The Xbots are really clutching straws right now, there really is very little to defend this console with.

TKCMuzzer3983d ago (Edited 3983d ago )

Actually, you could defend yourself with the console, it would certainly make a solid weapon....

Tody_ZA3983d ago (Edited 3983d ago )

Everything is clear now. The PS4 will fail because it doesn't let you watch TV while you're watching TV, doesn't wash your car, brush your teeth, let you Skype while hanging upside down from monkey bars, and doesn't appeal to humans of all ages, animals of all species and aliens.

The future of gaming consoles is not gaming. It is everything but gaming. Mind blown.

if the future of gaming is a cable box then MS wins GRATS MS , Ill be playing my PS4, also btw I can already switch between TV and console games its called a remote.

DigitalAnalog3983d ago

OMFG. This brings a whole new level of apologetic articles. I mean - this title... holy shit - this is fucking hilarious. Never in my life can I imagine the author shooting himself in the foot so badly.......

killnotic3983d ago

I know, right? Un-fucking-believable!

JsonHenry3983d ago

The future of consoles is more than just about gaming, yes. But it is the gaming aspect that will get it in front of people's television sets. The better the gaming is=the greater demand for the console.

Otherwise there is no reason to purchase this thing when your cable company already has a DVR box in your living room and you already own a blu-ray player. Why would you spend that kind of money on a console when you have everything you need already? That is right! Because of the games!

palaeomerus3983d ago (Edited 3983d ago )

Ok. Was the future of cell phones merely two way audio? Or was it also apps, color screens, two finger touch interface, games, music, navigation, camera, PDA functions, wi-fi link, etc?

I'm sure that you were super upset back when PS3 talked about Linux, web browsing, folding at home data crunching, music services, and on demand movie/tv show purchases or rentals, and blu-ray right? That's not gaming right? So it really bothered you when Sony did all that and called it the future of consoles right?

ceballos77mx3983d ago

But the maain difference is that all those thing were never the priority, it was all about the games.

MysticStrummer3983d ago

"I'm sure that you were super upset back when PS3 talked about Linux, web browsing, folding at home data crunching, music services, and on demand movie/tv show purchases or rentals, and blu-ray right?"

Super upset? No.

Super indifferent? Yes.

Blu-Ray interested me because of storage capacity for games. Those other things were not a factor in my PS3 purchase.

If Sony had revealed PS3 and talked about those other things, giving games only a passing mention, you'd better believe they would have gotten this same reaction.

nosferatuzodd3983d ago

this guy got paid by microsuck lol dont worry you can tell its damage control

Sky_Walker3983d ago

avengers19783982d ago

Take a look at all the Internet buzz, then take a look at the stock market, and then draw your conclusion.... It becomes apparent that Xbox one is going to be in dead last place next gen too.
Hell the sales of the Wii U went up after the Xbox reveal event.

coolvibu933982d ago

If the future of console gaming isn't gaming I don't want to be part of that future.
