PS4 has "50% more raw power" in graphics than Xbox One, says report

A detailed hardware comparison by Eurogamer has revealed the differences in the GPU (graphical processor units) between the two systems.

because i like both. It may not be the same for others but this is my choice.

in terms of specs on paper, they rarely translate into real world performance. specs are a guideline that generally gets exceeded by creative programming.

At least.....it used to be like that. Have we become so reliant on the specs that we no longer see the creativity involved in making something work? the theoretical power vs the actual results.

We know both are exceedingly powerful in relation to what we have now. the likely hood we will ever truly see each platform hit its respectable ceiling is almost hard to imagine. There will always be better optimizations in the programming to make something look and play better over time than it did when it first came out.

we have seen that trend since console gaming began over 30 years ago. the evolution within a platform from its inception to its demise has grown every time. We may not see these changes as obvious as they once were but its going to be the things we dont see that will stand out.

graphical fidelity has long been used to gauge the visual presentation. But we are at a point where the eyes cant tell anymore so its all the smaller details that will be the main focus for making the games more enriching.

We have seen the effect of making the car models in GT5 and Forza 4 more realistic. The smooth surfaces and detail on the body and while we will get the 1080p view of things moving forward, its all the smaller details we will start to notice now. Like the treads in the tires and the particles in the air and smoke dissipation will be more natural now.

The hardware really helps to make all that possible but the real talent for making it possible is the programmers themselves. What each platform is looking to achieve is increasing the amount of workspace that the developers can use. Knowing the current limits of things has been quadrupled opens up the possibilities for more deep and involved games.

There will be those who can use these new toys better than others but overall we should see some really great effort in the coming years.

Unfortunately, Microsoft almost hasn't any of those so your argument is invalid. I can't understand how anyone could buy BOTH consoles. It would have been stupid (at least in most cases) this gen and will be stupid next gen, even if you have too much money. Going with Nintendo as a secondary console is something completely different though.

I'm sorry but I saw no creativity penned up and ready to burst out of the XBOX1. All I saw were rich corporate Aholes schmoozing, winking, and rubbing elbows with other corporate Ahole partners. I choose PS4, because at this moment in time there is nothing coming from Microsoft that makes me *want* a XB1, not least of which having to pay for multiplayer. On the other hand, Sony seems to have "fixed" every single issue that people had with the PS3, and their first party studios have that exact talent that you were referring to. Microsoft's showing yesterday was an embarrassment, and I will wait til E3 for a "real" showing, but as of right now, all I see is PS4.

It's my thing. i have always bought the platforms within a console generation. I may not start with all of them at the same time but by the end of that gen i have them.

It was like that with the 8 and 16bit days. Then the saturn and ps1 and n64. DC, PS2, GC, xbox etc... its just my thing. I know the majority of games are 3rd party and will be available on multiple systems. But there are just some games you cant play any other way than by having the platform its for.

Its not the same for others and i can respect that.

Actually you're wrong about 'the hardware'.

The hardware has been available for coders to work on for years.

1.2 TFlops is midrange 2010 stuff. You know like what a $200-300 gpu cost that year.

Thus the hardware doesn't make it possible, because its already been possible, and whats possible out there is far stronger than the xbox one or even the PS4.

I was as disappointed in the xbox reveal as anyone and Microsoft has really seemed to move away from what I value as a gamer in the last number of years.

Having said that, the clock hasn't been revealed yet. The PS4 has 18 compute units running at 800Mhz and the xbox does indeed have half as many compute units but it's possible that they are running at a faster clock. It is even possible that the clock could be as high as 1200Mhz (50% faster) which would give it the exact same performance in teraflops as the ps4. PC overclockers commonly jack up the clock well past this and pictures do show that the new xbox has a giant fan and heatsink. Just saying it's possible.

I have both a PS3 and 360 now. I will get both consoles, but just like I did before, I will buy one at launch and the other after several price drops. I know that 50% more graphical power sounds like a lot, but in reality, it is getting harder and harder to see a difference every time the graphics power doubles. Hence, I really don't think the two will look that much different. I am kinda leaning toward the Xbox One, simply because I think that in the end I will use it a lot more. It's kinda funny how much I use my 360 for everything, but my PS3 is just for a few of their IPs and blue ray. I use the 360 for everything else. I guess I just like the interface and the overall user experience better.

Honestly, I think the PS4 is looking like a better gaming machine (the one you date), but, with all the extra features and total integration, Xbox is the one that will give the best experience (the one you want to marry). I consider myself a gamer, but I also like movies, social, TV... I think Xbox one's real advantage is the multitasking capabilities. I think this will be unappreciated by hardcore gamers, but for normal gamers and regular people- using a PS4 will frustrate the heck out of you after having the multitasking convenience of xbox.

I realize we haven't got all the details on each system, so my analysis may be premature... but it's my 2 cents...

Yeah, I agree. The PS3 offered more this generation. Especially the second half of the generation when Microsoft started really slacking on new exclusives.

The really interesting thing about the PS4 is that I see even some PC gamers like myself switching over to the PS4 as their main platform simply because the PS4 has such a power advantage over the Xbox One that multiplats will likely enjoy a high degree of polish and fidelity, leaving the PC versions only marginally better (and requiring a powerful PC rig to achieve even that).

Sony knocked it out of the ballpark with the PS4. It is the best designed console I have personally ever seen. The PS4 is absolutely going to dominate and define this upcoming generation.

PS1 was complete sh1te compared to the N64 (no alaising, no MIP mapping) and although the PS2 could crunch some numbers Gamecube games generally looked better. RE4 on GC was significantly better looking despite the PS2 version coming out well after the Nintendo version.

People forget that before the utter dogsh1t Wii and Wii U Nintendo used to make awesome consoles.

It's only the PS3 that was the most powerful of its generation.
But it looks like history is going to repeat itself with the PS4. Which I'm perfectly happy with. I'm sensible enough to spend my money on the better product. Hence why I own a PS3 and I'll be buying a PS4 day one.

But those of you older than 15 should remember your gaming history.
PS1 had awesome games that were super easy to pirate. That's what made it popular. But like the Wii it wasn't a good piece of hardware. The N64 absolutely destroyed it specs wise. Especially when you upgraded it with more ram. Check out the original Rogue Squadron vs anything on the PS1.

Went back and watched the PS3 reveal and I must say depending on price Sony has a convert in me. Haven't been this excited for a console in a long time. Unless Microsoft blows me away with games at E3, I am leaning strongly PS3.

The reveal was not about games. That was pretty clear. Don Mattrick said it himself before and after the event.

The reveal was hard to swallow for gamers, but I think after E3 everybody will be much more at ease. It's going to be a great show, and we will finally fully understand what both Sony and Microsoft are bringing to the table.

Sony's machine might be more capable in terms of graphics, but I can imagine Microsofts online capabilities will be a huge draw. I want to see the meaning of "persistent world MMOFPS" redefined... Like Huxley was supposed to be. Finally something on that scale is within reach.

In any case, I'll be happy with the outcome. I'm already sold on both consoles.

For me Sony admitted their mistake with the cell and then went to developers and asked "what system do you want us to make!" Now I think it's cool they admit they were wrong and thats why im getting the ps4. The PS4 included lots of games, majority being in-game footage. Not trailers. The Xbox One showed the exact opposite. Two exclusives, both trailers, and pre-rendered CGI. And the PS4 reveal sucked, but shines when compared to THIS. N4G used to be pro-Xbox(ahem, 2009), but we have realized how bad we got screwed over, so we switched to Sony. The PS Vita has sold 5 million, WAAY more powerful than the 3DS, and has FULL compatibility with PS4 games. PS Vita turned out great so far. I don't know what your problem is. The PS4 got way more tech specs, exclusive DLC > timed DLC, showed more games, didn't waste peoples time with TV and APPS bulcrap, and more games. And they STILL have alot more to announce, so "saving the games for E3" is just an excuse so people don't realize that their "major games" are Kinect BS.

At Sony's PS4 reveal, you got the most important thing you could get....
You got Sony's AGENDA.

They told you that they were focusing on GAMES. Sure they got apps, and Netflix and Hulu, and whatever else. Hell, they've got DIRECT TV tie ins now.

But Sony told you THEY WERE ABOUT THE GAMES.

You most certainly didn't get that from Microsoft.

It seems to me that Sony has chosen a front to fight the battle of the wallets...and it's games. They came prepared with actual gameplay. Not some pre-rendered stuff. But, real, honest, exclusive games. MS trotted out their 3rd party stuff (as if PS4 won't get the same stuff) and spent most of the reveal talking up what amounts to a spiffy new cable box...that can play some games. We know that E3 is around the corner. But, unless MS has secretly bought up a ton of studios, how many of those 15 exclusive launch titles will actually be AAA titles. There are bound to be plenty of Xbox Live and Kinect 2.0 games that won't garner the same attention as COD, Battlefield 4, etc. Plus, I don't for a second think that PS4 revealed everything that is in their coffers.

When we see the games, and what developers have been abel to do with the improved capabilities of both Xbox Live, Kinect, and the Xbox controller, everyone will be impressed.

Add that to all the amazing capabilities of the dash, apps, and media, coupled with instant switching and always-on matchmaking, I think its going to be the perfect console for me. But, I am the type of person who will be watching netflix, then switch to gaming, then back to netflix, all the while being on the internet/listening to music and any number of other things. Which is why the capabilities of the machine as demonstrated at the reveal are so exciting to me.

I'm excited for a redefinition of the phrase "persistent world MMOFPS'." That, and not having to get off the couch to switch between games. That always ticks me off!

I'll be getting both consoles, anyways. But Xbox One will probably end up being my primary machine. Old habits.

Ms missed that train thats probably why they didnt get into great deal about the power other then its 8 gigs of ram, sony kinda went in on that aspect.

Ms should have either given a whole complete console reveal, as in every detail, or showed a little more games. I think it was fine but i can understand the complaints so they probably should have just waited revealed every detail in one shot at e3 then release it like days or weeks later..

Sorry guys - none of you come close to convincing me that I missed something. Yes, Sony has some great games in the pipe - that's a given. Yes the graphics will be great (though not THAT much better then Xbox One - lets be honest). But to me those are expected features from a new gen of hardware.

Kinect 2.0, full TV integration and the insane, seamless multitasking abilities of the Xbox One are what has got my interest. Yes it is a games console, however I EXPECT it to have great exclusives, graphics and games. What I am after is the unexpected - the features that are going to change the way I look at what a game console is and what it can do.

Ok so its a fair question and not trolling. While I went in with an open mind and a slant towards favoring the xbox reveal due to my purchase history, Microsoft had also soured me quite a bit with 360 hardware issues. 8 original replacements and number 9 denied due to my email extended warranty running out (great customer satisfaction there). Purchased a newer "reliable 250 GB" version in the slimmer black model on the have it need a replacement, which they did take care of. So at Microsofts conference which dedicated to hardware and vision for this next gen I paid close attention listening for my key concerns to be acknowledged and addressed. Microsoft ignored their mistakes and didn't mention any kind of possible extended warranty for this new box many are predicting to cost $650.00 - $700.00 for extra technology like a built in and required Kinnect system. Almost no mention was made of games or the implication that gaming was one of the core focuses of there design.

PS4 on the other hand talked for an almost straight 2 hours on how their design was based around games and game design. They acknowledged while the cell was powerful it hindered design in game creation and only 1st party and 2nd party game creators needing alot of experience, time, and development tools could ever harness it. It was the reason I still do not own a PS3.

Sony went went on to acknowledge that mistake and were humble in accepting the input from both designers and gamers in making this new system all around gaming, with more power in the machine for gaming. Microsoft is basically doing what Sony did last time and telling me this machine is designed for entertainment other than gaming. I didn't want a blu-ray disc player that also plays games last time and I don't want a home media center this time that also plays games. I'm not rich and have two kids and work hard for a living. My entertainment budget needs to stretch far. Sony seems to be aimed to give me the better video gaming machine when I am looking to buy a video game machine. That would be the reason I was unimpressed with the Xbox One reveal and enthralled for 2 hours during the Sony reveal. Not sure about everyone else, and I'm sure there are a lot of trolls for their system of choice, but for the independent consumer, I feel many probably feel as I do having watched both. I don't quite buy into the aspects of the reveal you mention (ie Sony addressing issues and MS ignoring them) Sony ditching Cel would be a big talking point at a reveal like this - particularly when they talk about the specs of a new console (eg being x86 -a big change).MS were never going to discuss things like warranty extensions at a reveal like this.

However I do see your point around having issues with your previous experience with your 360 hardware. If I had to replace a unit 9 times (as you mention above) then I would have dumped Microsoft a long time ago. I am still on my original 360 (the white pro) and have not ever had an issue. However replacing your 360 8 times does seem like a slight exaggeration to me :)

The live demos showcased at the PS4 conference were running on PC/PS4 dev kits. Hell, they were even less powerful than what the final specs would be. We can expect better than what we saw. The major difference being the PS4 is a very standard architecture that devs can program for in their sleep. The Cell, not so much.

So Cell was powerful but you had to know the tricks to get the best performance out of it. The PS4 is extremely powerful AND extremely easy to code for. PS4 versions of multiplats will be held to the same standard as PC versions, with XB1 lagging behind with lower framerate and poorer textures, effects, AI, etc.

The on board I/O bandwidth sony already gave out that connection speed. and its looking to absolutly dwarf the xbox one's I/O .

Now you are correct based on a 3rd party game engine stand point you would be correct, but we are talking about what will the 1st party efforts do to really take hold of that hardware and put custom API's for the respective hardware platforms.

Naughty dog for instance made custom tool chains for Playstation 3 hardware, MM and GG also. Microsoft really you have not seen them do that.

Don't count on it. the X1 has slower ram and just 32Mb of esram for a frame buffer. That's enough for just two HD frames at 16bit/pixel. Since the PS4 has 8Gb of GDDR5 it can use any part of that memory for framebuffers with less copying of data required.

And forget 4K games on the x1 as they've made the same stupid mistake as they did on the 360 with their 10Mb of edram. Making a framebuffer too small to hold even a single frame is a PITA for developers. They have to break up each frame into pieces for processing.

DUH!!! Who wouldve thought otherwise?? The xbox one has that revised Kinect bundled with every system & to keep it affordable they had to cut back on horsepower.. PS4 has a basic camera so they were able to put more power into the console while keeping it affordable so im betting both will be about $400 USD, x1 will have a more precise camera but multiplats will be inferior while PS4 will have a camera for the ability to run games needing it but it will be more like the current kinect & multiplats will be best on it console wise.. If the Playstation 4 had been a bit less powerfull than the HTC1 I would have got it anyway, I happily game on Sony platforms and see no reason to change, I want the best software. (and free online gaming)
Now we know that the PS4 specs beat the competition buy a lot and that is important as I am now used to Sony having the best Hardware. PS3 was more powerfull than the 360, fact, and it had more functionality. Yet, the media tried to kill it, 360 was easier to develop for - and good on Microsoft for that, I mean it, they had a successfull system,it was cheaper and had a 1yr+ market lead, and the game development community hated the Cell. But PS3 outsold it.
After a successfull PS1 and PS2 the Playstation 3 was Sony's failure, where they lost direction, and still outsold the 360. (Wii was a fad that people are over, explaining WiiU being DOA). Most importantly though, PS3 is still supported by Multi-Plats like GTA5, and of coarse the heavyweigh exclusive titles to the end of 2013 at least.
If thats how a Playstation fails then I can not wait to see them back on form with Playstation 4. Common Architecture, loads of power, development community all onbord this gen, pasionate game developers calling a lot of the shots now instead of just corporate types.
And I certainly don't believe that PS4 will be lacking in functionality, whatever bells and whistles it has won't be compromising the games. I'm only happy because I like Sony's gaming franchises. Sony 1st party games will amaze, I can't imagine what Naughty Dog and Polyphony will acheive.

Limit me hit you with some knowledge they don't want you to know. there was a written rule in the Game Developer contracts that they could not up their resolution/graphics on other consoles. That is why multiplat games look similar to their other ports. They had to do games timed, so they couldn't really work on the games. They had to ship out as soon as possible to meet deadlines or risk paying breach of contract fees. That is why you see ports on to the PS3. If the Game Developers took their time with PS3 games, all PS3 versions would look like Uncharted games. It is that their contracts with 360 forced them to be limited. 360 was the easiest to develop, so they worked on that one first, then the PS3

It was Mark Cerny talking PS4 hardware. He mentions part way through the article that basic functions (like audio/video) have their own dedicated hardware unit.... (didnt say processor) so resources of the cpu/gpu dont have to be allocated. Since Sony didn't go into detail about that I believe even Sony has some hardware tricks left for E3 reveal.

Will developers intentionally scale back the graphics on multi-platform games so that they are playable on XBOX1? The same thing happened last generation. Unless PS4 gets a large install base VERY quickly, and force devs to jump ship, MS may pull out it's checkbook to get more timed exclusives...therefore forcing devs to scale back their games...therefore negating PS4's graphical advantage.

The components of the architecture are similar but the implementation of the architecture are much different.

Two Examples...

PS3 is probably better example... Sony only has a gaming OS on the device and it is a much smaller OS than MS'. When the OS is booted to memory it leaves sony devts more space in memory for games...

MS is probably better example... MS has integrated the memory right with the processors. This makes it much quicker and easier for processors to access the memory.

These are the kind of things that will separate the two companies' consoles from each other as the generation goes on. No one knows which are the best choices yet. There are literally 100's of architecture choices that will become significant as the generation moves on.

GT5 didn't really look that good, and Gears of War trilogy arguably looked on par with all of those. All of those games could have ran on 360 easily, it had more to do with sony owning the rights, not the hardware. Uncharted was amazing, but it wouldve felt better with a 360 controller.

Raw power helped. But like MS, Sony puts a lot of resources in developing first party software because they wanted it to look great.

Third parties can't dedicate as many resources to each console because they can't afford to lose money on a specific game.

The biggest issue with the PS3 was labor required to get the power out of the PS3 and into the game was expensive. That has to do with architecture. Architecture of the development tools, architecture of the console, and architecture of the game. Bringing the three together is a difficult and labor (expensive) task.

I think Sony learned from the last gen and has a much better architecture this gen. But, MS is has made a lot of significant architecture changes as well. So, while raw power wise the PS4 probably has more potential, it is To Be Determined whether the power can be translated into better games in the immediate future or ever...

Most games will be coded to run on both without much improvement on either. Well I find myself in the minority, I actually enjoyed what I was seeing form the Xone. I hear people complaining about games, and rightfully so as there where not near enough shown but they did state that E3 would be games oriented so would hold the screams to a minimum till you see what they actually have , but I mainly use my PC for my gaming needs. Both PS3/360 sit collecting dust, because I can get a better version of the game and cheaper for PC. I was excited to see the how responsive the system ran, and the evolution of the TV interaction is finally being pushed by a company with some weight behind it. No longer do we get just a sharper image, but the ability to customize your TV to the same extent that you can you PC. Now I only play games online and do not really see the problem with an always online system to make apps work. Some complain that they do not have a steady internet connection, which sounds like a personal problem. Not trying to offend just call it like I see it. When the world, well in the US since that is where I live, is pretty much receiving most info from online whether it be sites, social, or other. I find it odd people rejecting the thought of a system that can supply these services under one hood.

Yep, the only ones impressed by the Xbox One reveal, are the ones that enjoy latest knick knack type tech gadgets, with there side order being games.
Sony on the other hand have a machine solely focused on gaming & providing hardcore gamers with as much grunt under the hood as possible, rather than gimmicky crap, that seems good upon 1st inspection from a non gaming point of view.
I mean, props to MS, as if that voice activation stuff works as well "in the flesh" so to speak, as it did in the reveal, it is really good for future media players & such.

I don't want that voice rec. crap built into my games machine, as it offers another opportunity for cheating during multiplayer gaming sessions, either by LAN, or when your playing with mates around, or even idiots yelling Xbox OFF, down the mic of there headsets, to ruin your winning streak, & cheat, because they are being beaten.

Say you have a few mates around for some multiplayer gaming sessions, then they all catch on that they can turn this thing off, on, onto a different game, pause, & whatever else, to control your expensive machine, you paid a pretty penny for........They all sit there hammering out different orders in the middle of gaming sessions......I would want to axe murder a couple of ex-mates, as not only are they being cheating tools, but they also run the risk of doing damage to "MY" property, pride & joy, my NEW gen. gaming machine....
Screw that shit, just let me control my console through traditional methods, rather than through voice activation, or Wii-esque, arm flailing. I want to play games & enjoy it, rather than it feel like a workout, & look like a faggy male ballet dancer through my window, to my neighbors.

MS, I guess are trying something different & not just going with the flow, but, sometimes the flow is the better option & if you build on the flow enough, you get a tidal wave.
For me, PS4 is that potential tidal wave, & if MS are gonna lose focus on what makes us console gamers, then I would rather see them be killed off, & have Sega come back for another chance, or see Samsung enter the console arena, as they would be a force worthy of competing with Sony & Nintendo.

I'm kind of already decided that along with my Wii-U, I will have a PS4, in fact, I only wasted my money on that, as I thought it would offer me enough, until PS4 arrives, but sadly, Nintendo are failing Wii-U owners like myself, & PS4's arrival is fast approaching.....& I can't wait, to be honest.

I really don't have enough hours per day for any more than one console, especially once my collection starts building up (I have easily 180-200 games on my PS3 alone, & over 100 of those are disk based, before I get shot down for them all being cheap, quick-hit downloadable titles), I am drowning in games, & probably around 90% are not yet finished, & somewhere in the 80% vicinity realistically never will be by gens end.
So, once that PS4 releases, my PS3 use will start dropping rapidly & within 1yr, I would say, I won't have time, as well as won't want to look at PS3 games anymore.
So, with that said, PS4 is the only console I really need, & given the fact I already anticipated too much from Ninty & jumped the gun, by splurging on a Wii-U, I already have one console too many, that I will find even harder to justify, once I have a PS4 to accompany it.

MS seem way off base with this machine, & seem to have diverted from the original Xbox & what it was made for. I mean, the original Xbox, at least had the fact going for it, that it was made as an aesthetically ugly looking huge "gaming console", with online connectivity. A piece of plastic that had innards that made it very pc friendly, therefore easy to develop "GAMES" for.
Now they are worrying about Spielberg directed Halo artsy fartsy BS, & all this other jargon, that is really removed from gaming...... I mean, what gives??? Surely even MS's most loyal fans must be p!ssed, & wondering what direction MS is taking there beloved preferred branding in console gaming????

If that is indeed the GPU MS is packing, we're gonna have a noticable difference between graphical quality on multiplat games.

Its missing too many shaders/texture units to even compete. If they're using a unified memory set-up with DDR3, the difference is even bigger as 1080p gaming pretty much needs fast memory to avoid bottlenecks.

The GPU in the XBO is closer to the AMD 7770 (probably clocked a little lower too but with slightly more cores) while the PS4 is a beefed up 7850 with much faster memory.

This thing is looking to be a disappointment with everything all said and done.

More power is great, but what a lot of people don't understand is that the massive shift in support is due to Microsofts business decisions regarding Xbox1 that effect the consumer. Used game fees? The DDR3 plus small fast eSRAM for the Xbox One can get to the GDDR5s peak performance from the PS4. The GDDR5 will be better in general for the GPU no doubt, but much will be offset by the eSRAM. The questoin is how much will GDDRs high latency hurt the CPU in the PS4?

The cpu is running on low frequency ~ 1.6 GHz which is half the frequency of most mainstream processors. And the PS4 GDDR5s latency is double the Xbox One's DDR3 latency.

GDDR5 has around ~8-10x worse latency compared to DDR3. So the CPU in the PS4 is going to be hurt by this. Everybody's talking about bandwidth but the Xbox One is going to have such a huge latency advantage over the Ps4's Ram, that maybe in the end it's going to be better off.

I would also have to give Xbox One the software advantage for developers. I will get both consoles day one. But, Though it looks like the Ps4 a little more raw power, it also has much worse latency. Let's wait and see what actual developers have to say.

But this is where I think Xbox One will trump the ps4 in regards to sales.

A. When parents, noobs, and your every day buyer compares consoles...They will look identical in regards to numbers. 8 gigs of ram, blah blah blah...They don't know nor care which is slightly more powerful. But, what they will see is all the EXTRA stuff the xbox One can do and the constant commercials that will tout all the cool things Xbox One can do..I also believe that the Xbox One will either cost the same as the Ps4 or a little less. Either way it will look like a better deal for MOST buyers.

Now sure there will be some geeks that will SCREAM that the ps4 has more raw power! But will that matter in the end if the games look very very simular? I actually believe there is a good chance that the xbox One will look as good or better in terms of graphics than the Ps4. I say that because of my previous statements.

the latency you are referring to doesn't affect graphic performance. it does however have draw backs on general purpose functions. like bringing up a web browser or calling up a pdf document for rendering. its not ridiculously slow like you believe though. the sheer speed of the gddr5 (dummy ram) somewhat makes up for it. thats why its used in graphics card instead of low latency ddr3 ram. faster is better for gpu performance.

It's not about the functionality. Nintendo and Sony have similar amounts of non-gaming related functionality. It's the focus that's different. Sony spent 10 minutes of their 2 hour conference talking about other features. Microsoft spent 5 minutes of their one hour conference talking about games.

1. What do you do about lag? computations inside a cpu/gpu take place near instantaneously...are developers to trust that internet speeds will not slow down the transfer of information? Cloud processing can be awesome for number crunching (like folding at home or something along those lines)..but actually doing rendering and then passing that back to the user? come on...

2. What about those with poor/no connections? Do developers optimize for "cloud processing?" leaving those without connection to the internet to play lesser versions of games?

Yes, Xbox 1 (the real Xbox1) had an online infrastructure that was miles ahead of PS2's, but that goes without saying as PS2 wasn't even built to have an online option, it just had a bodgy add on ready in place, in case needed, & in the end, my favorite online game of all time is still Socom 2......& the number of users were similar, as Socom & Madden mean't PS2 attracted as many online users on PS2, as Xbox got with all it's combined games, such as Halo 2, PGR, etc, etc......and this is when PS2 gamers had to purchase a separate add on that was a complete & utter bitch to set up (so casuals were scared off).
So your latency BS just proves you never owned a PS3, or if so, never really gave it a go online, as Resistance 1 offering 40 player online that decimated ANY other game, on ANY other system for lag, because, IT HAD NONE. Then R2 did the same thing again, but this time 60 players.
Then, we'll take the same games on each system, & go with any of the COD's, & the simple fact is, that both PS3 & 360's online gameplay was equal, & both had tiny lag & disconnection issues, (although, I personally never had a problem, apart from an occasional lag hiccup, very, very rarely on PS3).
So, it is safe to say that both PS4 & Xbox One will offer identical online experiences, as the ground PS3 made up on Live from PS2 & Xbox, to PS3 & 360, was massive. And, the ONLY advantage that 360 had with comms & X talk play, is obviously not going to be an issue.

And, I won't even respond to your software comment, as trying to compare MS's software to Sony's, just proves that you may not be the full quid. I mean, just take a look at what PS3 has upcoming this year, then check your 360 release schedule.
The quality & quantity of games in ALL DIFFERENT GENRES that PS consoles offer, buries MS's shooter & racer centric lineups, by leaps & bounds.

It's not just the amount of shaders, Eurogamer mentioned that PS4 GPU has TWICE the texture fillrate as well.

When it comes to 3D gaming performance you just cannot hope to compete with a 100% fillrate and 50% shading disadvantage, about the only way they could achieve comparable graphics is by running at 30fps in games where PS4 is 60fps.

PS3 was slightly better theoretically but it was extremely difficult to develop for so only the prime developers who made AAA exclusives took advantage of the extra power.

The point is PS4 & Xbone are virtually identical hardware-wise, except PS4 is going to be EASIER to develop for due to the unified memory/lack of eSRAM AND has a considerably more powerful GPU.

It's not even going to be close this time around, PS4 will be blatently better for gaming.

Firs of all it's RAW power but what it does not mention is move engines end ESDRAM that gives a big performance kick. Sony went with simple architecture and powerful parts while MS took some cheaper parts and boosted them by more complicated and innovative architecture to reduce the cost of the machine. Secondly, people need to stop bashing new Kinect. Sure the conference sucked but the tech demos after the conference were pretty amazing! If ms will be able to put this together with illumiroom into some hardcore games (yes kinect is finally accurate enough!!) then thats some awesome innovative stuff that I'm willing to pay for.

Xbox defenders say power isn't everything... It's next gen you want it to look exactly the same as Xbox 360? Next gen needed new features and new look to complete its place in the next generation. Like Nintendo did with Wii to Wii U. It has a new playstyle and better looking visuals with features like Miiverse. Xbox One has Kinect always on to switch apps now fast. PS4 has new sharing features, newly designed controller, and one of each type of games Infamous(open world 3rd Person), Killzone SF/Destiny(1st Person shooter), SquareEnix FF/new ip(RPG), Diablo3(dungeon crawler multiplayer), and Knack(adventure). ^~\\ Nice amount of stuff and interesting too.

Power is one thing, but just stop and think about how friggin expensive the One is going to be considering it comes with Kinect 2 in every bundle. Kinect 1 is still way too expensive as a separate peripheral even today.

The power ultimately isn't that important.
If they are comparable it won't matter, but I really hate the MASSIVE paywall of Gold. I think the whole thing is bullshit, but for some reason people pay $60 a year for services that should be free and part of their "Magical experience."

Until they do away with features that should be free being locked behind a Gold Sub, Microsoft's Xbox can go completely fuck itself.
