Talking Point: The Wii U's Next-Gen Challenge Starts to Take Shape

Yesterday, as we're sure most — possibly all — of you are aware, Microsoft unveiled the Xbox One, the company's offering for the "next generation" of gaming. And so we finally have a situation where, piece by piece, the rumours, leaked design documents and outright fibs are making way for hard facts. Nintendo has already launched into its new generation with the Wii U, so the three manufacturers that have defined home console gaming in recent times — since the departure of SEGA with the Dreamcast — have all pitched in.

Nintendo Life looks at the landscape for the coming generation to see how the respective systems are starting to stack up against each other.

If anything, yesterday's conference is pushing true gamers away from Xbox and towards the other two consoles. It is no coincidence that Sony's stock increased by 9% during the announcement. And I also now understand - based on yesterday's conference - why EA isn't making games for Wii-U: Nintendo probably wouldn't agree to a used-game DRM scheme like Microsoft did.

Anyone who buys an Xbox One is funding the death of gaming.

EA have flip flopped, they are now saying they have games in development for WIi U.

andrewer3990d ago

Won't buy any more games from them. A developer does not simply call a system a crap.

deafdani3990d ago

@andrewer: you shpuld give them a bit of a break instead of holding the whole company accountable for the words of one (very stupid individual). EA actually was pretty quick to make those twitter posts disappear, and said that they are in fact making games for the Wii U, which shows that their corporate view differs greatly from that on one of their employees. It wasn't EA's CEO who said that, after all. :P

Just my opinion.

Realplaya3990d ago

@ deafdani He is absolutely right. I take what EA has said as a complete insult. I don't know the specifics of why they hate Nintendo but I can say if your games don't sell on Nintendos platform then work with them and not against them.

Historically EA has been a bully if we can't beat you we will buy you is there attitude. Proof in the writing Google EA history they buy development houses then fire people.

The way I see it they will need pay me to play there games I can say that because FPS games aren't my style. The sports games I buy are basketball and NBA live been dead for a while.

Just so you know, when Sony "revealed" the PS4, Nintendo's and Microsoft's stock rose, and Sony's dropped as well.

I already own a Wii u, and think it's a fine little console, but I am also very interested in the Xbox One and PS4. I usually get all of the game consoles, and I also don't think Microsoft or Sony will charge a fee for used games.

I plan to buy an Xbox One, but I don't buy into your dark alley of thinking as it being the death of gaming.

I'm on good money but i can't afford xbox one ??? i mean Nintendo have really though't hard about everything, the wiiu will be 50/100 dollars cheaper than ps4 and will have pretty much the same games ?? i think Sony and Nintendo will dominate but Nintendo will have the edge as they have huge games that sell consoles by the millions.

maxgamehard3990d ago

Damn Straight, On both the Wii U and PS4 I can play offline, play used games and I don't have to pay to play online. Plus nothing is being forced that I don't want.

The Xbox One is completely anti consumer and a blatant disregard for the core gamer. If we don't support it then Microsoft will have to change its approach.

Triforce0793989d ago (Edited 3989d ago )

EA are making games on wiiu just less games ? but just the same quality ive read the blurb.

Microsoft should have left them stay 3rd party

Bethesda France was made up of roughly 15 people... they couldn't of being doing much

Bethesda France mainly did publishing and marketing within the region

Profchaos30m ago(Edited 30m ago)

Bethesda France focused on publishing and marketing in the region. And 15 people lost their jobs as part of the closure.

I wonder if this is part of Microsoft's strategy to abandoned physical media or possibly gamepass advertising makes their roles redundant you don't need to market a game as hard when the majority of players get the game as part of a sub which already promoted upcoming games

Tacoboto10m ago

It's France too, there's a high likelihood only 1-2 people on the team even had an Xbox.

Sony Could Increase Your Game's Difficulty If It Sees You Complain About It

Sony has recently published a new patent that wants to dynamically handle the games' difficulty and gameplay based on the player's emotions.

jznrpg1h ago

This is something I might use. Sometimes I play some good games but they don’t have difficulty option and are a little too easy.

Profchaos1h ago

Souls games will be like that players struggling make it harder

I think if used correctly it could work well

Nintendo's Massacre Of The 3DS And Wii U Is Finally Complete, Regrettably

Hanzala from eXputer: "The cruel hammer of Nintendo has fallen. Farewell, 3DS and Wii U, you surely brightened my life and many others; you won't be forgotten."
