Will Xbox One Have a Fee to Play Second-Hand Games or Not?

After the Xbox One reveal, many reputable gaming outlets reported that the console would be charging a fee for owners to play second-hand games. After Microsoft more-or-less dismissed this, we asked Xbox what their stance was on second-hand gaming and got a vague response.

It won't have a "fee". You will have to pay full price in order to install/register a game with your XBL account.

In other words...

If you're not the first person to pop the disc, then you will pay full retail price.

just #startover. The XBOX1 wasn't conceived w/ hardcore gamers in mind in the first place.

edit/: @autocad below - because if you're playing an FPS or racing marathon per se as I do w/ multiple monitors and consoles that won't work. It's that simple.

Not true:

Also, this is what Major Nelson said about it in his blog.

"We know there is some confusion around used games on Xbox One and wanted to provide a bit of clarification on exactly what we’ve confirmed today. While there have been many potential scenarios discussed, today we have only confirmed that we designed Xbox One to enable our customers to trade in and resell games at retail.

Beyond that, we have not confirmed any specific scenarios.

Another piece of clarification around playing games at a friend’s house – should you choose to play your game at your friend’s house, there is no fee to play that game while you are signed in to your profile."

That makes it seem like games are tied to accounts..That's pure bull crap to lock 60-70 dollar games to profiles.

darthv723984d ago

if thats the case...then it is similar to how games are tied to gamertags now.

All your dlc and games purchased can be playable on another unit when you are using your gamertag.

Sony even had this on the PS3. If i went to my friends house, i could sign into his PS3 as myself and be able to dl any games i have purchased and we could play them on his system.

KingKelloggTheWH3984d ago

Doesnt mention if theres fees or if you need Gold to activate...

gta28003984d ago

So in other words, you can't play a game at a friends house unless your friend is there to sign in with his account and you can only sell and trade your game if it's untouched and still has it's "retail" value?

ProudGamer3984d ago

So my friend would have to pay a fee to play my games on his account? How is that any better?

HeavenlySnipes3984d ago

You have to sign into your account in order to play on another console. So basically yes, if someone else wants to play that game on their account on a different console they would have to pay

For single user their is no fee. If u are playing same game at ur friends home with ur own account, its free. They havn't confirmed what if u are playing same game with others accounts.

So if I get together with some friends for a gaming marathon, and every one brings a couple games to share, at $70 per game that isn't already tied to my account, we could conceivably have to pay $1000 to play the games we already own?

AutoCad3984d ago

why wouldnt you play their game on their console? i dont get it.

Kal8533984d ago (Edited 3984d ago )

Because if more than 2 people bring their games to your place to hang out and play them, you'd need at least 2 different consoles, or everyone would have to swap in their own hard drive. Otherwise someone's going to have to buy the same game more than once.

AHall883984d ago

You greedy bastards, don't you know the publishers of those games are starving and need your money!!!

aquamala3984d ago

depends on how they implement it. maybe it you can log in to other Xbox One's with your account and play the games you own.

rainslacker3984d ago

You can log into your own account on your friends console and play the game. The game is tied to account, not console.

Not ideal in your scenario, but it wouldn't incur charges.

I'm confused, but I bet this doesn't end well.

sir_fortesque3984d ago

I thought they said "Used games will be playable but there MIGHT be a fee" which means there WILL be a fee. But I can't find where I read that quote so take that with a grain of salt

kingPoS3984d ago

Why does it have to install it? Why can't the XB1 just read from from the bluray. If all games had to be installed, why doesn't it have at least a 1tb of HHD space?

500gb - Really? Microsoft hasn't given any mention of being being able to upgrade from that paltry amount at all.

Hammerwatch II Will Stop Dilly-Dallying and Head to Xbox and PS4 on April 23

"Hammerwatch II's journey to Xbox has been long and perilous. After first launching on Steam in the fall of 2023, the game finally turned up on PlayStation 5 last December.
