Trophies or Troubles? What Do Gaming Achievements Mean to You?

Brady Ruiters from ITF Gaming writes: Achievements and Trophies are somewhat new to the gaming world, only really appearing during the current generation of consoles. There have always been challenges within games to perform certain tasks but there wasn’t always tangible evidence or rewards for completing them.

i love my trophies/achievements,and i dont understand why people hate them, maybe its because of the braggers then i could understand, but i like my trophy/achievement because 1 they display feats in a game that most probably never acquire and 2 they add replay value.

ScubbaSteve3994d ago

I don't really hate them I just don't pay attention to them anymore. I enjoy seeing cleverly named achievements when something interesting happens but I've not cared about them since the first Assassin's Creed game where they wanted you to go around and collect 200 items. I find those types of achievements beyond tedious and it ruined them for me.

JoGam3994d ago

I don't know why people hate them. I for one love my trophies and loved my achievements when I had a 360. For me having trophies makes a already great game more gratifying. As for those games that suck, trophies/achievements means nothing.

"What Do Gaming Achievements Mean to You?"

Nothing. I play games for the game and could live without trophies/achievements.

I_LOVE_MYSELF3994d ago

"I play games for the game".

Trophies are pretty much a part of the game now. A semi optional part of the game, but still a part.

DragonKnight3994d ago

Nah. They aren't. If they were, you couldn't have a game without trophies. But, you can. It's only a perception that they are a part of the game. If there is anyone who can't play games without trophies, they aren't a gamer, they're a trophy whore.

Achievements are great love them, trophies are OKAY im not a fan of the whole system dont like how i can ave every trophy bar one gold and only be like 70% done, the achievement system just works better for me, i do lke the levels, i DO NOT like the stupid long sync you have to do with psn, if u plat a new game takes ages and im on a 20MB con, best you get around my area so i know its not my connection.

Both are great for re-playability thought some games theres just no reason to replay them, but if thye have trophies then you have a reason

Way to over exaggerate... 1 gold trophy away from the platinum will always be (unless there is DLC) 91% . Not like this is really that different from Achievements though, if you're missing 1 achievement worth 90+ points (these do exist, just like 0 point achievements exist too, though they're typically just platinums), then you're still only at 91% (or less) overall.

Honest_gamer3994d ago

later on i'll take a pic and prove u wrong when i get home :)

admiralvic3994d ago (Edited 3994d ago )

Feel free, but before you make a fool of yourself... DLC counts against your overall 100% (as I mentioned), which is PROBABLY what you're seeing. Like GamerJet ( http://psnprofiles.com/trop... ) has the Spelunker platinum, yet their overall percent is 43% due to all the DLC (still displays the platinum image if you platinum, so people know even if you have 1% due to an impossibly high amount of DLC that you still platinumed). Also before you waste your time, I can tell you that trophies have fixed values.

Honest_gamer3994d ago (Edited 3994d ago )

tis okay im playing a game thats not dlc one piece pirate warriors, 87% or so with 1 left to get so i'll admit above 70% that i said but below ur "fixed" 91% (with no dlc)

strigoi8143994d ago

trophies are fine for replayability of a certain game

JeepGamer3994d ago

They mean less than nothing to me. You could take away every single one I've ever earned and turn them off completely and I would be happy.

'Hey, I'll take my save data over to my buddies house... LOL! I can't, because somebody might be getting trophies that way... Sorry!'

admiralvic3994d ago (Edited 3994d ago )

"'Hey, I'll take my save data over to my buddies house... LOL! I can't, because somebody might be getting trophies that way... Sorry!'"

You do realize that that wasn't the reason it was removed, right? Sony implemented the "You did not earn a trophy" ( http://i1.ytimg.com/vi/PEpd... ) system to prevent people from simply loading another persons game save to get trophies. So if a developer wanted you to play with another persons save file, they can always just implement that and thus makes you point moot.

DragonKnight3994d ago

Game Genie for PS3 can make anyone's save file into your save file.

Something about recreating old school graphics in an era of HD high poly photo realism just hits a spot. I'm not nostalgic cause I mostly played GameCube and GB/A, but it's a visual style that gets over looked even by indies.
