Epic Games' Mark Rein: "PC innovation suffered" from Intel's decisions to not fix their graphics

DSOGaming writes: "Now this is really interesting. An article about the battle between Intel and Samsung caught Mark Rein's, Epic Games' CEO, eye who afterwards claimed that PC innovation suffered from Intel's decision to not fix (or improve) their graphics cards."

Try optimizing your games for Nvidia and AMD instead then, Epic. Might be a better idea.

AznGaara3993d ago

Please, that would involve them doing more work. If you think about it with the next gen consoles using AMD parts thats another excuse for them.

GraveLord3992d ago

Why would they do that when the majority of the PC gamers are gaming on Intel HD 3000 laptops?

I do agree with Rein that this affected PC gaming, but its not the biggest factor. Consoles are by far the biggest obstacle and have held back PC gaming for years. We got these beast PC rigs that aren't being put to good use because people are happy with their HD 3000 graphics or 7-8 year old consoles.

Bring on the next-gen of consoles, it will benefit ALL gamers.

Really? Are the majority of PC gamers actually using intel HD? I can't find any reliable statistics on this figure and I think that's for good reason - it's impossible to actually know.

Yes we've taken a hit in graphics because of the console cycle but we've also benefited from that by having games that shift away from graphics and focus on gameplay. Games that utilize modern power not for high res textures but for procedural generation and crazy art styles. It's not even about quality just the selection criteria - consoles have many hurdles between the completion and distribution stages. On PC it's a link and a torrent and boom, for Notch at least, you're a freaking millionaire. I like that gaming took a turn away from graphics and I like that PC gaming offered one of the strongest safe havens for that exploration - if waiting longer is what we needed to a find of breath of fresh air then I'm kinda happy we did.

This is VERY typical of Epic though. "GRAPHICS NOT GREAT, GAME BAD". Only they would look at a market place producing titles like Reus and Hotline Miami and say innovation has slowed.

The kings of lazy ports and poor optimization playing the blame game again.

ProjectVulcan3993d ago (Edited 3993d ago )

Its a stupid claim. Intel are/were primarily known as a CPU company, same as AMD, before AMD bought Ati.

Intel aim to deliver the best CPU performance they could and stayed out of the discrete game, providing graphics that are merely only good enough for the machine to function and play video etc.

This is ALL the vast majority of PC consumers actually wanted. Why would Intel force up the cost of their parts for better graphics all those years when that isn't what most people actually cared about or wanted.

If they wanted that they bought discrete.

Awesome comment, bubbles

Huma3992d ago

Completely agree with you. The majority of people with integrated graphics are not gamers, and thus would not be potential consumers for Epic.

Very weak Mr. Rein.

achmetha3993d ago

No one uses integrated graphics on pc for gaming. Most people on PC want the best picture possible and it's not something integrated graphics can provide. Unless Intel decided it would get into GPU cards, I doubt they would ever make integrated directly compete with nVidia and AMD.

I can agree that it would be nice to have a third real competitor in graphics cards, which would push the other companies to step their game up and in turn make better cards for everyone.

Somebody3992d ago

Intel nearly did became a third competitor in the discrete graphic cards war. It's grand plan was to put hundreds of low power, cheap to make chips (they were going to bring back Pentium 3 for this) in a single card that can do what a single GPU does. It was theorized that such an array can possibly let game makers apply real time ray racing to games.

Then, Intel withdrew from the discrete card war before it even started and continue on making integrated graphic chips.

Diffraction_Fos3992d ago

PC innovation suffered more from your s**ty ports and half-a**ed games in general.

aliengmr3992d ago

Says a console developer.

Remind me why Epic gives a crap again. Because last I checked they left the platform and to be honest I don't miss them.

Why Epic's Win Against Apple And Google Paves The Way For The Future Of Mobile Gaming

Epic Games winning its cases against both Apple and Google is shaping the way forward for the future of mobile gaming.

shinoff218340d ago

I feel alot of mobile gamers are kids which will at some point probably turn to console or pc. Mobile gaming just doesn't cut it for me.

AlterRecs39d ago

tru dat, but i feel like it's gonna be a lot more viable for people who travel a lot or don't want to invest in a full gaming rig. Think of it as a Switch on drugs, with a LOT more room for free illegal downloads.
