Xbox 360 tops consoles in US in April with 130,000 sold

While I agree the numbers are aweful and its an 8yr old console. Its rather frightful to see them at #1 with 130k and 42% of the sales when all 3 of the the other consoles being tracked are newer in terms of age.

All numbers are pretty low. Might be the time of year, or looming next-gen, but the report said software sales were down 10% YOY. Seems the total sales among all consoles was about half of predictions.

Well now that Microsoft is expected to announce the next Xbox in less than a week, I'd expect worse and worse numbers all around. Current hardware and software will steadily decline, but it's still impressive that the Xbox 360 came out on top of the NPD yet again.

I'm not impressed. Microsoft spends most of their advertisement money within the U.S. Their ads are still in a lot of places, as compared to "everywhere!", from before.

Good for them, though. I can't take anything away from their success with feeble words. That's for sure.

Well many have not invested from the PS2 era. So we could see X360 and PS3 sales grow as a price drop looms after next gen consoles are announced in full detail at E3. I suspect Nintendo will deliver a $50 price drop for WiiU this holiday season. PS2 actually got a booast in sales when PS3 launched. PS3/X360 could get the same if the pattern lands again. :)

Numbers are not bad, but I do find it funny this news breaks as Sony is about to take the global sales crown from them. Sony needs to do more in the US for its next console to surpass Microsoft in the three major regions. Microsoft on the other hand needs to push for some Japanese development on its console. Europe seems to be pretty much split, but with Sony leading for now.

April NPD's are a train wreck for console hardware.

Xbox #1 at 130k w/ a 42% share of market.

That means PS3, WiiU & Wii are sharing approx 180k units between the 3.

Is it normal for NPD to not report the other numbers for systems? I went looking for them but couldn't find anything other than things that linked back to this report.

Either way, it seems all the consoles sold less than predicted. I believe one estimate had 360 at 260K, and the PS3 around 180K. Not sure about the Wii/WiiU.

NPD allows for companies to comment on their sales only. Sony stopped discussing their NPD sales numbers a good year and a half ago if not longer. Nintendo is hit and miss on numbers depending on if they are good and MS reports mainly because they still hold #1 in north America so its become a bit symbolic for them to continue to show their #1 ranking in north America.

What's impressive about it? They've spent the vast majority of their marketing money here, and have designed a console that appeals more to Americans than anything else.

It's no different than the F150, the best selling truck in America for something like 20 years. Not the BEST truck. Just best-selling. Ford spends PLENTY marketing that truck, too, far more than they do even the Mustang, arguably their most popular vehicle. When you spend that much time promoting one device in one area, tailoring it to the people there, it's really no surprise that it does well. And, frankly, doing that is easy.

Getting a device to sell well in multiple regions where the various populations have different general preferences: THAT'S hard.

And THAT'S impressive.

Xbox is a beast and MS is giving out bonuses while sony is taking theirs back....lol Next gen is coming and it's a whole new game. I predict that xbox will still outsell PS in the US. Next week is gonna break some fanboy's hearts. I got my fingers crossed for BC on day 1. if that happens then it's gonna be a great show. Xbox Infinity for the win.

Typical, MS Fanboys celebrate another cunning victory in the United States, while they fall behind more in more in the rest of the world. While Sony nabs the definitive #2 spot this gen.

By the next quarter numbers, i'll bet Sony has a pretty comfertable lead over Microsoft in world wide sales.

Terrible numbers all around though, with new consoles inbound and no price drop people are on the sidelines. Don't blame them. Expect price drops by Sony and MS at E3 though, should have happened at the beginning of the year imo. Get more consoles out there and build an even bigger base for the new generation, those people will eventually upgrade. Goes to show you how much money both of these companies lost with the 360 (RROD) and the PS3 ($599). Their hands have really been tied.

WiiU and Vita are DOA, I don't think anything can be done. WiiU will be around on a very slow burn for 5 years or so and Nintendo will launch something else, Vita was sent to die imo.

If Microsoft were leading the way, they would be releasing games for their current console. If they were leading the way, they would be leading in worldwide unit sales. If they were leading the way they would have a handheld by now. If they were leading the way, they would have a service that matches the value of PS+ by now.

And you think MS were the ones to dispel the notion that games were only kids toys?? Sony did that with PS1 and PS2, and both were such cultural phenomenons that it couldn't help but happen. Pay attention, cause it sounds like you were born with the Xbox controller in your hands.
