EA's exclusive license to create Star Wars games. Good or bad?

The GameZone staff discusses EA's exclusive license to develop and publish future Star Wars games for a "core gaming audience" and whether there is cause for concern or excitement.

Depends on which developers they assign to each respective Star Wars genre... a FPS should/could be handled by DICE or Crytek, assuming they would work on something like Battlefront 3... I would prefer DICE take care of it. a Pod Racing game could be handled by Criterion. Victory Games Studio could do a Star Wars RTS like Command and Conquer. Bioware could handle a new Star Wars RPG... EA could somehow manage to corrupt them but only time will tell.

Let look at it this way EA having the exclusivity to the Madden franchise has ensured that they make a better game than the competition :)

Definitely think there's more chance of high quality Star Wars games now than there have been for years. EA won't have just acquired the license for no reason they'll have big plans.

Agree. EA has talented developers. For example EA owns Bioware and Bioware created the greatest Star Wars game ever (KOTOR). A Battlefront game with Frostbite 3 would be sweet.

EA is just a scumbag publisher. No doubt they will create quality AAA games, but with money grabbing DLC, online passes etc.

The Bioware that made KOTOR is long gone, the only thing they share now is the name. I could also say that Bioware created one of the worst MMO's in recent memory.
EA might be a shitty published but they've also turned their developers into shit.

TBH...

The Star Wars franchise has not hit it's true potential of late...so EA can't really do any worse than those who have managed the license before them.

IMHO, the best Star Wars experiences have been on PC & Nintendo platforms.

The developers working on the new Star Wars games are all good ones, but EA is a very suspect publisher to say the least. The only bad part of this is if Visceral Games is really working on Star Wars 1313, it will look nothing like the version we originally saw, which was using Unreal Engine, where as the new Star Wars 1313 will be totally re-done using Frostbite Engine.

It will be bad for gaming. EA programmers are terrible and . They will treat his exclusive deal like Madden very little improvements each installment.

I think EA having exclusive rights is a bad idea, but not necessarily because it's EA.

Any exclusive deal cripples competition, just like what happened with Madden (anyone remember NFL Blitz?). When you HAVE to buy EA if you want star wars there's less incentive to make the star wars games good.

I have a problem with how broad EA's rights are. I don't have a problem with EA having rights to some Star Wars franchises. I have a problems with EA having exclusive rights to ALL Star Wars games.

Giving someone exclusive rights just gives them a license to make crappy games and get away with it because there is no competitor in the marketplace to hold them accountable. Look at what happened when EA got exclusive rights to the NFL. I see no reason why Star Wars would be any different.

On the other hand, say for instance, EA had exclusive rights to Battlefront and Activision has exclusive rights to Republic Commando. In that case both sides would feel pressure to create quality product because they would have a competitor.

The battlefield Franchise is amazing, BF3 is the best multiplayer game i have ever played.

Fifa 13 is got to be the best footie experience ever, fantastic achievement.

You might knock EA, but people also knock MSFT, they also knock the NHS and people who grow Weed!
