PS4 Watch Dogs is 'a simulation that the current generation doesn't have the processing power to do'

PSU - Yesterday, we shared new screenshots and gameplay details from Watch Dogs, Ubisoft's PlayStation 4 launch title. If those didn't excite you (first of all, who are you?), the hyper-realistic console simulation only possible on PS4 might.

GribbleGrunger3994d ago (Edited 3994d ago )

In light of the fact that we know there IS going to be a current gen version, isn't that title a tad misleading?

And before anyone tells me they actually discuss the PS3 version, I'm talking about the headline.

cayleee3994d ago (Edited 3994d ago )

Often console makers would like to see such headlines in order to brainwash people. How much they pay for such articles is anyone's guess.

Pretty much every multiplat released this gen has been better on the PC. We dont see such head lines then lol. So why is it when the game is going to be available on current consoles do such headlines make way? Sure the PC version, followed by next gen consoles will be way superior, but that doesnt mean current consoles arent capable of running this game.

Rather i would think current consoles will be getting ports from next gen for a long time, until the next consoles actually have a good user base.

I wonder though, if a person bought Sleeping dogs on PS3 do they also get a free copy for PS4 or do they need to buy another copy again? That is what console makers should be telling us, but no they rather tell us what suits their agenda best.

MikeMyers3994d ago

The game is being scaled back for current generation consoles. That's how it should be done. Don't make games for the lowest common denominator, make them for the PC and scale it back and push the hardware on each system it's on. Watch Dogs will run on current hardware, it just won't have the same density or look as good. That's normal. We've already witnessed that throughout this generation with the Wii usually getting the lowest scaled version, the Xbox 360 and PS3 being relatively close, and then the PC.

When the PS4 and probably the next Xbox comes out the games will likely be close to the PC and then the PC will start pulling away. It happens every generation. The problem is most of the marketing is on consoles and the PC has issues with piracy, which means not all games will push the hardware as much as they could or they don't even release the game on it. That means some games are compromised because of consoles being the lead platform.

GribbleGrunger3994d ago

I agree, Mike. The one thing I fear slightly is that devs could be tempted to hold back on the full specs of next gen consoles in order to be able to bring out a current gen version too (terrible run on sentence!)

PurpHerbison3994d ago

"And before anyone tells me they actually discuss the PS3 version, I'm talking about the headline." Who cares what somebody on N4G might have to say.

SolidStoner3994d ago

°only some people care!

meanwhile, in reality 99% of the time reading comments gives more and better information then the article itself! Weird I know, maybe gaming journalism isnt grown up yet....

KwietStorm_BLM3994d ago

I wouldn't say its misleading. They're just saying the version of Watchdogs on PS4 can't be duplicated on current consoles. Its like how Battlefield 4 will be available cross-gen, but talking specifically about the PS4 version, it won't technically be the same game as on PS3.

That being said, Ubisoft sure is going a long way to put people off of buying the PS3 version. Its like every week now they're detailing what they could only do with the game on PS4.

Kran3994d ago

But then... doesn't this just make it a current generation game ported to next gen?

Because isn't it easier to upgrade to a generation rather than downgrade (that is if they made the PS3 version first and then upgraded it for next gen)

DaThreats3994d ago (Edited 3994d ago )

I expect the PS4 version to be greatly superior to current-gen platforms with all it's extra horsepower.

Gamesgbkiller3994d ago

ya ya for sure .

I THINK next gen WD will be the best version :)

arbitor3653994d ago

i cant wait to see how much the next gen versions (PS4 and xbox infinity) crush the last gen versions (PS3, xbox360, wii u)

jcnba283994d ago

You think Wii U is last gen? LOL

sarshelyam3994d ago

By technical merits, it isn't difficult to understand what the comment implies. The WiiU version will match, more closely, the PS3 & 360 versions.

DigitalRaptor3994d ago (Edited 3994d ago )

Wii U is not that much more powerful than current gen and roughly 4 times less powerful than PS4 and the next Xbox. It's getting last gen treatment from third parties. It's not taking off like a new console should.

It's basically the Wii HD that we all wanted 4-5 years ago. It's safe to say that technically it's Nintendo's next generation, but is vastly incomparable to what Microsoft and Sony will be doing. I still want one, but will be picking up a PS4 first and waiting for Nintendo first-party games - because honestly, those are the only ones worth getting excited about.

ssj273994d ago (Edited 3994d ago )

actually WIIU is current gen...
says the specs.. the games it has.. the devs who are the ones develop games..
the only ones who still think the WIIU is next gen are the Nintendo fanboys.. and is nothing wrong been current gen.. it still has plenty of room and I bet once the price goes down to a very cheap level, the WIIU will start selling better and good games will come.. and by the time PS4 has 3 years in the market the next gen console from Nintendo will come out and it will even up things.

it will be interesting...

SpideySpeakz3994d ago

It's not even last gen. It's last last gen. LOL.
Yeah, I said it.

MasterCornholio3994d ago

It isnt last gen its current gen. Next gen starts when Sony and Microsoft say so.

madjedi3994d ago

"You think Wii U is last gen? LOL"

Sure as hell haven't shown anything that shows it is a significant improvement over the ps3/360 to merit calling it next gen to me. In fact a number of things aren't remotely on par with it's competition.

To nintendo fans it's next gen, to roughly everyone else it's a current gen console that is 7 yrs late to a party that is already breaking up.

Sorry not everyone thinks designing a console around the controller qualifies as next gen.

"LOL" Yeah that is the same reaction i have when i look at the wii u's available lineup atm.

SonyPS43994d ago

It is still considered 8th gen, just like the PSVita and 3DS are 8th gen systems. The Wii U is just the weakest 8th gen home console system, just like the PS2 was the weakest of the competition. The PS2 still monopolized the entire industry regardless.

DarkHeroZX3994d ago

The PS vita isn't 8th gen its 2nd gen for Sony. PSP was the first gaming handheld.

Zhipp3994d ago (Edited 3994d ago )

I dunno. The 360 screens looked damn impressive. The difference might not be all that noticeable.

Realplaya3993d ago

Actually Ubisoft has had ample time to get familiar with the Wii U hardware I want to see what they can truly do with it.

yugovega3994d ago

next xbox will still have the better edition just like the 360 has had this entire gen.

NovusTerminus3994d ago

That is because the Cell was harder to code for and most devs couldn't / wouldn't optimize for it. Now both systems use an x86 architect so they should be pretty much the same game.

MGRogue20173994d ago (Edited 3994d ago )

Do you think it would have been better for Sony to have put a more improved & easier to code for cell processor in the PS4?

I ask this because developers are starting to get to grips with the cell hardware & it shows in the titles we've seen over the years such as Uncharted 3 & God of War 3, Battlefield 3 & even Black Ops II.. look at how much better performing that title is on PS3 compared to Black Ops 1, big difference in terms of optimization. It'd have been a kinda waste of time for developers to have learnt how to code for this beast of a processor & now they're being 'forced' to learn & code for this newer easier to code for x86 one.

Obviously it wasn't a complete waste of time as we got great games on the PS3 cause of their hard work & more PS3 titles are sure to come in the future. I hope this move to a x86 processor for PS4 will benefit us the players in the long run :) I think it will, only time will tell.

reynod3994d ago

"It'd have been a kinda waste of time for developers to have learnt how to code for this beast of a processor "

Stop it with the Sony kool aid bro, Cell was a disaster lol. It was so bad Sony had to run to Nvidia for help at the last moment. Imagine the disaster had they proceeded with 2 Cells on the PS3.

DarkHeroZX3994d ago

Sony went to Nvidia for a GPU to do simple graphic work and to keep cost down. The ps3 was originally suppose to use 2 cells and no GPU but learning curve for the cell was far too high and it was expensive to work with. The nvidia chip in the ps3 is inferior to the 360 but because of the cell first party games look fantastic.

reynod3994d ago

@darkhero

News flash, RSX does most of the work even on first party games. CELL tends to play a supporting role, by doing stuff such as AA.

Its like Batman and Robin, RSX is Batman Cell being the sidekick. Now imagine if Sony had gone with 2 robins instead lol.

At least troll on a subject that makes it hard to determine if you're trolling or not. You know very well that won't be the case based on what many developers are saying about the PS4.

yugovega3994d ago

it's not trolling. sarcasm isn't trolling. but if you want to take it serious. we all know the ps3 is more powerful then the xb360 but it still got worse editions of games. truth. not trolling. so who's to say the ps4 wont be more powerful and still gets worse editions? take off your fanboy goggles.

Watch Dogs Deserves A Remake, More Than Ever

With the world of information and technology, privacy and security growing every day, Watch Dogs deserves another chance in the spotlight, now more than ever.

RaidenBlack995d ago

The only Ubi title that deserves a faithful remake right now is Splinter Cell 1.
All 2014+ Ubi titles are just underwhelming. Especially ones from 2016+ are just cancer.

LucasRuinedChildhood995d ago (Edited 995d ago )

Seriously, are we so far removed from Ubisoft actually making good games that people now praise Watch_Dogs in retrospect?

"Watch_Dogs has remained one of my favourite games of the last ten years." Jesus Christ.

HankHill995d ago

I remember being so disappointed in Watch Dogs when I played it at release. It was alright, but I think I fell for the hype and I needed a game to play on my new PS4.

obidanshinobi995d ago

This is what happens when mediocrity gets praised as good.
Standards are slipping across the whole entertainment industry.
What was once considering rubbish is now considered as OK, what once was OK is now being praised as good etc etc.

LamerTamer995d ago

Everyone has their own likes. I liked it a lot myself. I played through it twice and liked the car chases and the open world with fairly decent environments and missions. It suffered from the whole downgrade thing where they showed graphics that weren't actually there. No game will appeal to everyone but it was still ambitious for it's time.

gantarat995d ago

assassin's creed 1 should get a remake.

ExBee995d ago

For certain! AC1 was brilliant at the time but with new graphics and gameplay it would be amazing! Do you prefer old combat or new though?

RaidenBlack995d ago

I'd say a reimagining of AC1.
I direct AC1 remake would be a bad idea. It'll need better story pacing and significant better world building.

BlaqMagiq1995d ago

Old. Let it play like how it did with AC2-Syndicate style gameplay but refine the setting and story.

Profchaos995d ago

It would need a lot changed for it to be enjoyable again as even back in 2007 on launch we were all complaining about it's repetitive gameplay go here perform one of three side quests repeat then assassination now do it over and over until a big battle with a unforgiving checkpoint system.

BlaqMagiq1995d ago

Absolutely. It needs it. The only AC I truly didn't enjoy.

chicken_in_the_corn994d ago

I'd prefer it didn't. Ubisoft would make it so bloated, it wouldn't be anywhere near the original

smolinsk995d ago (Edited 995d ago )

Absolutely, this watch dogs legion was terrible boring.

Profchaos995d ago (Edited 995d ago )

As a fan of the franchise legion was garbage and I regretted my purchase for the first time in the franchise the entire thing felt like an experiment in NPC behaviour and released without the writers input on what makes a good story.

I don't think I'm alone in that feeling though as wrench and Aiden are brought back and the campaign was rewritten to fit them.

I am tempted to buy the season pass to play it again with Aiden but fool me twice shame on me I'm waiting for a deep sale

camel_toad995d ago

Agreed. Despite the annoying hipness of the characters in part 2 I thought it was a really fun game. I was extremely disappointed and surprised at how many steps back they took with Legion. You'd think it was made by an entirely different team. Or was it?

It was just so devoid of fun.

LamerTamer995d ago

Honestly one of my biggest annoyances with Legion is that they took out the camera views for the driving. I mean the behind the car view that they stuck us with is near unplayable. I always used a first person driving view. After two releases why did they take OUT features? I don't get it.

TheSinsibleOne995d ago

The fist watchdog game was the best by far
After that they weren't weird and annoying with that hipster stuff. Aiden was a badass.

LamerTamer995d ago

I thought so at first too. I got used to it and it ended up being good after some play time. I just had to give it a chance.

TheEnigma313995d ago

Remake the PoP series from xbox/ps2/gc era

RaidenBlack995d ago

They are remaking Sands of Time.

TheEnigma313995d ago

That's good news. Hopefully it's done right.

Inside the Driver game that died so that Watch Dogs could live

From VG247: "When cars slide, they leave tyre marks. In a game like Driver, they’re an aesthetic touch, part of the inherent cool of a handbrake turn. But those dark shadows in the road also tell a story. From tyre marks, you can determine the speed of a vehicle, when it started to skid, and its ultimate direction of travel – long after the car itself has vanished into the distance."

vallencer1060d ago

Different spellings in different parts of the world friend. Tyre is a correct way to spell it.

Pridefall1060d ago

Dunno why you got downvpted when tyre is correct in Australia.

IGiveHugs2NakedWomen1060d ago

Why did they stop making some of the best games ever? Driver was one of them.

Gameseeker_Frampt1059d ago

Assassins Creed 2 showed Ubisoft how to make money and Far Cry 2 showed them that gamers don't like complex ideas. Now Ubisoft just turns out games that are just variations of the same thing.

WeAreLegion1060d ago

Best driving mechanics ever made. Nothing has come close.

Gardenia1060d ago

A story driven game with pure driving gameplay. I'd love to see a new Driver game or a remake of the first one.

ApocalypseShadow1060d ago

Yes. This one. A definite remake of the first without adding any ridiculous fluff. The first game had great physics and sound for its time. The start of the car in the beginning cinema I watched constantly. My father and uncles were big muscle and classic car freaks. Only thing crazy about the game was the relentless cops in the last level. Insane the way those police cars were and launched at you.

Bleemcast made it look better just like PC emulators. But would definitely take a remake.
