Do we really need better graphics?

OXM - This topic is all about hotness, actually - the visual kind. As a new generation of console technology looms, Aoife WIlson and Dan Griliopoulos ask the obvious question: do great games really need the utmost in graphical horsepower to succeed? Are superior graphics indistinguishable from a superior work of art?

We sure as hell needed more RAM, that's for sure. So, bring on next-gen, if not for the better graphics (which I want too), then at least for the RAM.

I still play that 8-bit Pokemon Red. So hope, not in my opinion. However, realistic graphics is a PLUS, but not a requirement.

Do I really need more games? Well duh, I like my games to look real. Its fun to watch how people react when they think its real.

My mother seen me playing Forza 4 once and was telling me that person needs to learn to drive more safe and it wasn't nice they hit that other car. I laugh and said it is a video game an that bad driver is me XD

I'm tired of this popping up so frequently these days. I'm also tired of people trivializing visuals as if they mean nothing to the bigger picture. As far as I'm concerned, if you truly believe that graphics don't matter, add nothing, and are superficial or meaningless, then you've likely never studied, created, or even appreciated art in your entire life. Visual arts have been an important part of human culture since time immemorial, it's downright sickening when people suggest otherwise.

Blah blah blah. I rather play Vagrant Story (PS1) or Quackshot (Mega Drive) over all the Battlefields, Crysis and Metros of this industry.

Art is subjective and to me Vagrant Story and Quackshot are examples of art while the Battlefields, Crysis and Metros with their super-duper graphics and visuals are pieces of generic crap. I don't give a flying fuck about visuals and you know what, I hope you feel sickened after reading my comment.

Yes to be honest we need them. And as someone above said, more power dosen't just boost graphics. You also boost physics, animations etc.

No we don't neeeed shit. We want stuff. Marveling at pretty graphics can put someone in a trance. If they're trying to escape from reality like me sometimes, complex visual effects can do the trick. There's a fine line between being stunned/impressed by visuals and merely feeling satisfied. I was satisfied by Wind Waker, Super Mario Galaxy, and Skyward Sword. I was astounded by the first Gears of War.

Yes I want better graphics and better physics I want and expect it all with technology. If technology didn't get better I wouldn't expect it but technology keeps moving.

Especially with more intricate and creative design, something like Journey wouldn't have been possible on PS1, and something like Demon's souls wouldn't have the same allure on Sega Saturn

Today's graphics are good, but draw distance is what needs to be improved. Also better graphics are always welcome, as long at they don't come at game play's expense.
