Will Sony Be Torn Apart by Congressmen For New Ad Campaign?

Siliconera is reporting that they have one of Sony's new ad campaign's for the PS4. If this is legit, Sony may have chosen to go down a very controversial root begging for a ton of hate from those of the 'Video game violence is ruining our children' persuasion.

I'm usually not one to be uptight or oversensitive to video game violence/rhetoric. However, from a business standpoint, that line should not be released.

They can come up with something else that would be just as effective, without the unnecessary media attention of alluding to the player as a murderer. They could easily change it to something more about becoming an assassin or spy, where the connotation of the word isn't so readily open to outrage.

It wouldn't even be censorship, because I doubt Sony wants to convey their gamers as murderers, even referring to a game (afterall, it's pretty rare you are just a straight-up cold-blooded murdering bad guy in a game).

It's really all about context. Unfortunately nowadays, you don't need to have things in context for the media to go apesh*t over it.

I'm not terribly oversensitive about these things, but that part about murder is a bit much, and seems like it would be cut if this were real. Just too many bad connotations, and if anything tragic were to happen like Sandy Hook the media would jump all over it like game makers condone that sort of thing.

I agree with Myze though, it's possible to convey a similar message using better words, and quite frankly there were a lot of things in that rumored commercial that don't make great advertising. It seemed to be made to offend as many groups as possible.

If you look at Australia that has strict guns policies and video games violence/sexuality policies, they're not missing much.

There are some banned video games, but they're pretty bad titles and the reasons they were banned for are legit.

If they try to crusade on video games again, they will just end up looking like idiots again. They tried to blame games after Columbine and Newtown, but facts indicated that those individuals were abused and had psychological issues stemming from it. Parents of kids killed at Columbine blamed the school system for never doing anything about bullying but it got buried by the media.

Congress should crusade for accountability and proper mental health in this country rather than scapegoats. I guess that's impossible to expect though when we can't even get a President in office who doesn't cover up American deaths, no matter which party they belong to. Ownership of fully automatic weapons is already BANNED in many states. Wherever ownership is legal, sales between owners are HEAVILY regulated by the 1934 National Firearms Act, which requires a federal background check, approval from local law enforcement (which is BLANTANTLY un-constitutional), and a $200 transfer tax. In addition, all have to have been registered by May of 1986, which means buying such a weapon is EXTREMELY expensive due to the limited supply, far more than the average citizen can afford.

2nd Amendment supporters have been more than reasonable in allowing government to restrict access to certain firearms. At some point, society needs to stop blaming guns, and start blaming those who use them to commit crimes.

I don't recall anyone claiming after the Boston Marathon bombing that we need more "bomb control legislation", and for good reason. The notion is absolutely absurd. Guns are no different, but yet many allow their rabid hoplophobia to lead them to believe that a pistol/rifle/"assault weapon" somehow possesses the ability to transform a decent, rational human being into a bloodthirsty, violent murderer.
