Next-Gen Graphics Will 'Blow You Away'

NowGamer: "We've already seen a glimpse of what next-gen is capable of with Sony's PS4 reveal, and with Microsoft's Xbox 720 due to get announced later this month we should have an abundance of shiny, pretty graphics to get excited about.

But despite that Ubisoft's CEO Yannis Mallat believes that the next-gen consoles will 'blow us away' with its visuals. Yet, despite that, that's not the important part to take away from next-gen consoles."

sorry, you will get that next next gen

Army_of_Darkness4003d ago (Edited 4003d ago )

...Because developers are too incompetent too even consider improved gameplay alongside amazing graphics for next Gen right??? gezz..
Title should have said "Next-Gen Graphics and gameplay Will 'Blow You Away'" but I'm sure someone will still have something to complain about if it's not on the title of the article lol!

piroh4003d ago (Edited 4003d ago )

@Prcko

why? games with good gameplay exist since PS1 (GT1,GT2,Spyro,Jak,Crash,Tekke n3 etc.)

aCasualGamer4003d ago

To be fair, you gotta grab the Dualshock 4 and play the game for yourself, that's the only way you'll find out if the gameplay feels nextgen or not. Even the slightest changes in gameplay animation will make the difference from current gen to next gen.

Again, we gotta play the games first.

Saigon4003d ago

I think the remarks that he is making is based on everyone's prediction that the Next Generation of Consoles graphics will be sub-par leap in comparison to the previous Gen graphics. I can honestly state that was something I believe also but I think E3 will change my perspective. I expected this generation to allow the devs to apply more physics and AI implementation in the games, which to me would also improve the game play.

TimmyShire4003d ago

Well that's kind of his point I think. Graphics will be easy, but other stuff - like social - will be the most important part of next-gen.

MaideninBlack4003d ago

Was about to ask that very question. So far, next gen games look like current gen games just with spiffier graphics.

Where's the leap in terms of gameplay?

Minato-Namikaze4003d ago

Wasnt that also true at the start of this gen? Games didnt look too much better and late gen ps2/xbox titles looked a little better than some 360 titles early on.

Godmars2904003d ago (Edited 4003d ago )

@Minato-Namikaze:
Actually some games looked like they were going to introduce new gameplay elements only to be canceled. Things like Killing Day or the three separate projects Namco promised early on.

I can't be the only person to have noticed the gear change that happened with game development when the current gen was announced. Who feels that it was rushed into.

kneon4003d ago

Better graphics can lead to improvements in gameplay.

For example if the graphics are good enough then we don't need all the hand holding devs do to help us find stuff. If you can clearly see that key/map/book/ammo etc on the floor then there would be no need to make it glow, flash etc. like we see in almost every game that requires you to pick up objects.

We wouldn't need red or green tags above enemy and friendly players if you can clearly distinguish one from another just by looking at them.

mediate-this4002d ago

we should judge games on being a package, good graphics, good story good gameplay. they should all be worked on for the immersion of a game.

especially in this day and age.

theaceh4002d ago

I believe Wall Street and the US mortgage crisis is to blame for the lack of gameplay innovation in games this gen. Perhaps developers were afraid to take risks in times of global economic uncertainty. Lets just hope we have a better economic environment next Gen.

3-4-54003d ago

Exactly....Hopefully the industry "get's" it now... and realize we want great gmaeplay + great graphics....like it used to be.

A cool/good art style trumps realistic graphics any day. Mix those 2 together + solid gameplay and you have the makings of a good game.

Godmars2904003d ago

No. Given that everything is leaning towards real-world like physics and graphics, on graphic engines which only do such, then I doubt that the industry "get's it".

@kneon:
Sorry, I have no idea what you're talking about when all we've gotten this gen is more and more hand holding.

starchild4003d ago

Oh be quiet. You guys are such negative nancies. Gaming is better than ever. I have played more amazing games this generation, both indie and high budget blockbusters, than in any previous generation. And I suspect next generation will be even better still.

3-4-54003d ago

which is why i said hopefully....Hope must remain.

GraveLord4003d ago

It really depends on the developer.

s8anicslayer4003d ago

Read the entire post before you comment on the story from just reading the title..Gameplay will remain a priority for dev's who care and won't be priority for dev's who don't care just like any other gen!

Godz Kastro4003d ago

Did anyone read the article... Stop posting without reading. The title is deceiving. Game play is what they are talking about. Geez, so many drones on this site. All the agrees without reading article. N4G strikes again...

Godmars2904003d ago (Edited 4003d ago )

I did read it. And I still think that the emphasis will be on graphics, not gameplay.

If this generation of gamers - that's *gamers* not games - have repeatedly set their expectations high and been disappointed only to turn right back around to accept and defend the now lower standard.

psoomah4003d ago (Edited 4003d ago )

>Godz - TOTALLY agree.

DivineAssault 4003d ago

gameplay will be great too.. If the gameplay was pretty good on PS3, PS4 will definitely run games fantastically

Cyfyxtfg4003d ago

in the beginning its all about graphics then gameplay. they have to hook us

gedden74003d ago

took the words right from my mouth

SilentNegotiator4003d ago

You're right! We don't have any gameplay!
/s

Godmars2904003d ago (Edited 4003d ago )

On average graphics has been more of a focus this gen than gameplay.

And by that I mean that when graphics had been bad gameplay has been horrid. And when graphics have been good gameplay has still been horrid. And again that's on average.

SilentNegotiator4003d ago

"On average graphics has been more of a focus this gen than gameplay"

I must disagree. Online games have exploded this gen and made way for many, many new gameplay elements and modes. Games like Skyrim and Fallout 3/Vegas have pushed open world games. Games like Dark Souls tried our patience and looked faaabulouuuuus! doing it.

Graphics did NOT get in the way of gameplay.

Godmars2904002d ago

You're not even trying to comprehend the issue. That console gaming wasn't the similar to PC gaming or that most if not all the problems started up when once took over the other. You think player modding something like Skyrim and Fallout 3 moths after the games came out is same - exactly the same - as day-one releases.

Doctor_Freeman4003d ago

I agree 100%, there's some games that already look amazing but are boring as heck.

Gameplay>graphics

Not graphics>gameplay

Utalkin2me4003d ago

@Godmars290

"What about gameplay?"

How about you read the article and the other people that agreed with you, lol.

dantesparda4003d ago

Hm, i see the Wii defense force is in full force in this thread. "What about gameplay"? yeah, cuz Wii u and Wii are the pinnacle of gameplay and have all the good gameplay, while the graphically superior PS3 and 360 have so so, sucky gameplay. This argument is so pathetic. And we all know how much better Wii U's gameplay is over the current gen and quite possibly the next gen to. And graphics dont matter according the Wii fanboys, so why even come out with a graphically superior consoles? People need to shut up with the gameplay comment, most games nowadays play fine!

showtimefolks4002d ago

This time around since both companies are using off the shelf products so development should be easer and in 2-3 years games will be stunning when most developers will hav sufficient time to know the system inside out

Graphics matter I could careless what anyone says, graphics matter maybe not as much as the gameplay but I'd you have the best gameplay in a ugly world to play in it wouldn't be much fun, in a way gameplay/graphics go hand in hand

Can't wait to see what we will see at E3, here is my wish list of what I would like to see:

1-Want to see what valve is working on
2-Want to see want some other teams inside RockStar are working on maybe a new Midnight club? Bully 2 anyone? GTA HD collection? Table tennis 2 lol?
3-want to see just cause 3 and please please this time don't mess up the story, the story in JC2 sucked I mean have some sort of structure where it makes sense
4-cyber punk 2078
5-witcher 3. Also I would like to see witcher 1-2 on ps3 or ps4 along with witcher 1 on Xbox 360 or next Xbox
6-EA said few months back that they were holding a lot of new about new IP's and were waiting to show them on newer consoles so come on EA, we ready
7- Crash HD collection I know activision owns the rights now but I am hopeful one day we will at the very least get a HD collection of

Many publishers have said they have a lot of new stuff to show so make an impressions on us and 1st impression is usually the best one so try your best

Here is hoping this year's E3 is the best one ever

Bobby Kotex4002d ago

Next gen graphics are here.. on a PC.

bigrob9044002d ago

most of the time when there is a boost in graphics there is a boost in gameplay. most people fail to realize this however that gameplay and graphics can go hand in hand. now some things gameplay wise you can do with bad graphics is just that when you up those graphics you actually feel like your character is doing whatever it is that he is doing. no longer is the nife flooting in midair beside you're character's hands but they are holding it. this can be seen in other area's as well.

derseb4002d ago

Has there ever been a time where "the next generation of graphics" would not blow us away?

linkenski4002d ago

If it's EA, then no. Big companies tend to finance development of games they know are popular in terms of the playstyles they contain. If you want innovative gameplay then stick to indie games. Not saying there aren't exceptions though. Look at Rockstar's GTA IV DLC's and especially Ballad of Gay Tony that had some funny new ideas for mission design. Also Japanese games like Catherine are also interesting takes on how you can separate story and gameplay.

Crysis 3 on PC didn't blow me away and that's pretty "next gen" so we'll see.

extermin8or4003d ago (Edited 4003d ago )

In it's defence it did have to cater to the aging consoles, plus crytek seemed to insist on the 60fps on pc as their main goal to get the great graphics and have the game run at 60+fps on PC. It's a trade off between the flaps and fidelity....
Anyway I can't wait for PS4 Killzone shadow fall and infamous second son both look like great games, watch dogs looks amazing and I'm kinda excited for AC4 :p

MegaMohsi4003d ago

For me next gen wouldn't be just about higher resolutions, textures etc etc. I'd want some great looking/realistic physics, INTELLIGENT enemy/friendly AI and smoother/more realistic animations. I think that's what next gen would mean to me, if I really wanted the first part I can just buy a GTX 680 or 7970 and play games at 1600p but that to me is not next gen. I hope they can deliver!

LocutusEstBorg4002d ago

IT doesn't run at 60fps even with $2000 worth of GPUs.

extermin8or4002d ago

.... it really ought too... :S I've hear dpeople claiming they can for less than $2k-although I do take what people claim with a handful full of salt lol-but it doesn' look THAT amazing, nor is the AI anything too special and the physics seem pretty much the same as Crysis 2's.... Infact Farcry 3 is more technicaly impressive in my opinion considering the AI, open world, wildlife-and I have that on ps3...

jjb19814003d ago

Waiting patiently for the PC gamers to chime in....

LightofDarkness4003d ago

And you can be sure that they will now that you've pre-emptively trolled them. That's like saying "I bet that ball will roll" after you kick it.

coolmast3r4003d ago

We're here. What do you want?

chaldo4003d ago

don't worry coolmast3r, he's just a jealous hater.

sourav934003d ago

Leave him be. Let's get back to Planetside 2 ;)

Hazmat134003d ago

im sure both NEXbox and PS4 will be great looking games. compare the first PS4 game to last kinda like when everyone said Uncharted drakes fortune was using all the power ps3 has to offer then you see Uncharted 3, another one halo 3 with halo 4. long live gaming!

Bethesda Needs to Reduce the Gaps Between New Fallout and Elder Scrolls Releases

Waiting a decade for new instalments in franchises as massive as Fallout and Elder Scrolls feels like a waste.

Microsoft have Obsidian but I feel it's Bethesda who just don't want to play ball as they've always said they want to do it themselves.

Once MS bought Zenimax in 2020 they should have put the Outer Worlds 2 on the back burner, allow Bethesda to finish off its own Space RPG with Starfield (despite totally different tone why have two in your first party portfolio with two developers who's gameplay is a tad similar) and got Obsidian for one of their projects to make a spiritual successor to New Vegas.

When the Elder Scrolls VI is finished Bethesda can then onto the main numbered Fallout 5 themselves.

The Outer Worlds 2 started development in 2019 so putting it on the back burner wouldn't have been the end of the world, they'd have always come back to it once Fallout was done and it would have been nicely spaced out from Starfields release once they had most likely stopped supporting it and all the expansions were released.

If they did this back in 2020 when they bought Zenimax and the game had a good, steady 4 - 5 years development, you might have seen it release in 2025.

We are literally going to be waiting until 2030 at the very earliest for Fallout 5 and all they seem bothered about is pushing Fallout 76.

RaidenBlack8h ago(Edited 7h ago)

Its not just only Todd not playing ball.
Obsidian have made a name for themselves in delivering stellar RPGs, but most famous once have always been sequels/spin-offs to borrowed IPs like KOTOR 2, Neverwinter Nights 2, Fallout: New Vegas, Stick of Truth etc.
Obsidian wants to invest more in their own original IPs like Outer Worlds or Pillars of Eternity with Avowed.
Similar to what Bluepoint & inXile wants to do or Kojima is doing (i.e not involving anymore in Konami's IPs).
So yea, even if New Vegas has the most votes from 3D Fallout fans, Obsidian just wants to do their own thing, like any aspiring dev studio and MS is likely currently respecting that.
But a future Fallout game from Obsidian will surely happen. Founder Feargus Urquhart has already stated an year ago that they're eager to make a new Fallout game with Bethesda, New Vegas 2 or otherwise. Urquhart was the director of the very first 1995's Fallout game after all.
And don't forget Brian Fargo and his studio inXile, as Brian Fargo was the director of Fallout's 1988 predecessor: Wasteland

KyRo4h ago(Edited 4h ago)

Obsidian should take over the FO IP. They're do far better with it than Bethesda who hasn't made a great game for almost 15 years

Duke194h ago(Edited 4h ago)

I disagree. Part of these games is the support for the mod community. If they move to releasing a "next game" every 2 or 3 years, the modding support plummets and the franchises turn into just another run of the mill RPG.

Make the games good enough to withstand the test of time, to keep people coming back to them and expanding on them with mod support.

--Onilink--1h ago(Edited 1h ago)

I dont think anyone is saying they need to come out every 2 years (not to mention almost no game is released that quickly anymore)

By the time Fallout 5 comes out, it will be more than 15 years since Fallout 4 came out (same with ES6 coming out 15 years after Skyrim). Even if you want to use F76 as the metric for the most recent release, that one came out in 2018. It will be a miracle if F5 comes out before 2030

The point is that for a studio that doesnt seem to operate with multiple teams doing several projects at once, that their projects normally take 4-5 years as a minimum, and that now they even added Starfield to the rotation, it becomes a 15+ years waiting period between releases for each series, which doesnt make sense. Imagine that Nintendo only released a mainline Mario or Zelda game every 15 years…

They either need to start developing more than 1 project at a time, let someone else take a crack at one of the IPs or significantly reduce their development times

mandf1h ago

Yeah I’m going to say it, who cares about the modding community when making a game? Half the time developers only tolerate modders because they fix there game for them.

Skuletor3h ago

Yeah, let's all advocate for smaller gaps between series' releases, then we'll probably get headlines about how the series have dropped in quality and they could have benefited from more time in the oven. Let them cook.

SimpleSlave1h ago

"how the series have dropped in quality and they could have benefited from more time in the oven" So every Bethesda game then? Got it.

Listen, I would agree if this was about From Software or something, but Bethesda?

🤣

C'mon now. What timeline are you from?

isarai2h ago

Hows about you focus on quality, just a thought 🤷‍♂️

Sciurus_vulgaris1h ago

Bethesda [or Microsoft] would have to reallocate internal and external studios towards fallout and elder scrolls titles. Bethesda has the issue of developing 2 big IPs that are large RPGs on rotation. If you want more Fallout and Elder Scrolls, development will have to be outsourced.
