Yoshida: PS4 Version of Multiplatform Games Must Be Considered the Best

It’s probably fair to say that the PlayStation 3 was dealt an unfortunate hand when it came to multiplatform games. The complex architecture of the console meant that most third-party studios struggled to get to grips with the machine, resulting in plenty of dodgy ports – especially in the system’s earlier days.

Why o why3999d ago

I can survive with some to many multiplats being inferior if its only slight...Just make sure you continue to dominate on 1st/2nd party games.. Ill be kool with that

RyuCloudStrife3999d ago (Edited 3999d ago )

Amen that's why the PS4 is so easy to develop for.

xHeavYx3999d ago

The sad thing is that millions of PS4 owners will buy the next COD even if it will look inferior. And no, I don't have a crystal ball to see the future, just plain ol' common sense

MikeMyers3998d ago (Edited 3998d ago )

What we don't want is a situation like before where Sony forces developers to have exclusive content if it gets a later release date or Microsoft demanding simultaneous release dates. This should all be at the discretion of the publisher. I'm tired of console makers making demands and restrictions on multiplat games.

What will be apparent is the PS4 being much easier to develop for. Sony has finally decided to play ball with everyone else and not create proprietary hardware that can make things rather difficult. The PC will always be ahead of consoles because it's not a stagnant piece of hardware. It's always moving forward. So on a technical level it won't really be able to compete. The controller and ease of use like the article says can be the preferred version however on the PS4.

If you're going to disagree say why instead of these phantom disagrees just because you don't like hearing the truth or have personal issues with me.

CapsLocke3998d ago

"PS4 is so easy to develop for"

Lol, this is a daily comments from N4G "coding masters".

MikeMyers3998d ago

@CapsLocke

This came from actual developers. They have been praising the new system and some have also had input in the process of its design.

yewles13998d ago

@MikeMyers

"What we don't want is a situation like before where Sony forces developers to have exclusive content if it gets a later release date or Microsoft demanding simultaneous release dates."

So only MS is allowed to to make demands and not Sony...

*facepalm*

nix3998d ago

i picked up PS3 because of Sony's exclusive games. i don't care that much about slightly "degraded" third party games. PS4 will be the same

3-4-53998d ago

@heavy...but a lot of that reason will be because it might actually make sense to play COD on a PS now.

Owning COD on xbox 360 ( every one unfortunately)....and having played 2-3 on the PS3 I can officially say playing COD on PS3 is not fun and your playing an inferior version simply because of the controller and it's loose controls.

The PS4 seems to have fixed that and thus FPS games will be easy to play and more responsive.

ZombieNinjaPanda3998d ago

Wasn't the N4g hivemind saying that third party games are important too? What happened to that?

MikeMyers3998d ago (Edited 3998d ago )

@yewles1
"So only MS is allowed to to make demands and not Sony..."

Where did I say that? I said 'or' meaning I don't want either company to have such influence. Yet people gave you a well said bubbles up? lol

*facepalm*

With so much power in the PS4, owners will be getting the best of both worlds, great looking exclusives and great looking multiplatform games :D

Monkeycan83998d ago

This is most likely a noob question but what are "2nd party games?"

IRetrouk3998d ago

Teams like insomniac and quantic that make exclusives but are not owned by sony

Jamaicangmr3998d ago

@ IRetrouk

Sony now owns quantic dreams. Insomniac has pledged to go multiplatform.

@ Monkeycan8

2nd party studios are studios that make games exclusively for a platform despite not being owned by that platform

extermin8or3998d ago

not owned by sony/microsoft/nintendo and aren't owned by another publisher say like activision own infinity ward making them 3rd party, but Bungie own themselves so they are 2nd party.

nirwanda3998d ago

Like extermin8tor said but they are aways published exclusively by the platform holder, so bungie own themselves but will be published by a 3rd party or even themselves a bit like EA sports get published by EA but are still 3rd party.

BitbyDeath3998d ago

2nd party are studios who make exclusives based on signed contracts.

creatchee3998d ago

@Monkeycan8
Here's the real answer:

Basically, people don't know what they're talking about but like to pretend that they do, so this term exists.

What the hell? That many agrees to disagrees? I would think after the PS3's "unfortunate hand," you guys would demand, at the very least, an equal game.

kevnb3998d ago

honestly, im getting sick of this PR crap. But it seems to be working...

Snake Raiser3998d ago

Ok. But there is no reason to give up on the multi-plat performance front either. Most likely next gen, many of the great games will be multi-plat. Might as well make a strong effort to make them best on your preferred console.

oof463998d ago

@MikeMyers: The only discrepency with what you said is that it is Microsoft who pushed for same day release. If a game was released first on the ps3, the developer had to add content to the 360 version.

And I did not click like or dislike.

weekev153998d ago

To be fair its obvious the point he was trying to make is that added content should be at the discretion of the game developer/publisher and not the console maker.

Whilst I agree this would be good, I don't think it will ever happen. Ms/Sony need to give people a reason that their consoles are better so will pay good money to 3rd parties, who would be crazy to turn them down, to make their version the better version.

Capitalism at its finest.

AngelicIceDiamond3998d ago (Edited 3998d ago )

"That might mean that the graphics are better, the controller is more comfortable, or the console is more user-friendly, like you don't have to turn the power on and off or you can switch between your game and Netflix at will. Those things will become key."

User friendly, and switching between (apps) Netflix is all what the 360 can do and is(user friendly).

the controllers are subjective and debatable.

I'm glad Sony will be taking cues from MS's 360 but its clear that user ability, app switching and party chat was the winning factor for MS when talking multiplats and user ability, and Sony realized that.

Better resolution, frame-rate, textures, lighting, AA, AF and ... should be obvious in PS4 version of multi platform games !
Sony did phenomenal job with PS4 architecture and specs !

piroh3999d ago

in PS4 versions can also be plenty of exclusive content due to Bluray and RAM. Watch dogs 60 min bonus gameplay as example

obviously i bet most of the developers won´t take advantages of PS4 due to laziness or financial reasons

ZodTheRipper3999d ago (Edited 3999d ago )

I don't think that developers say "hey, we have 8GB ram and BluRay on PS4, let's make some exclusive content because of that!" :P

The 60min's in Watch Dogs are rather an exclusive Deal with Ubisoft for which Sony had to pay for.

dragonyght3998d ago

@zod18 they be more like "hey, we have 8GB ram and BluRay on PS4, let's see what this baby can do!" lol
any form exclusive content will be feature base ie. the share button

stragomccloud3999d ago (Edited 3999d ago )

I'm getting a PS4 for exclusives and the back catalog of awesome Sony titles; however, assuming they are not lazy ports, I think for me the Wii U versions of games would be the best. Haters gonna' hate, but Wii U owners know how much of a difference that second screen makes when used well. Already great examples are Assassin's Creed 3, Batman Arkham City, and of course any game that supports off screen play. I know that I should be able to play PS4 games on my Vita, but I don't quite yet think bandwidth is where it needs to be to play PS4 games on the go. Anyway, for everything else(EA games that I must own), I have my awesome gaming PC.

That said, I can't wait until I see more of what the PS4 has to offer!!! I'm also really excited about what Microsoft will be bringing to the table. Just a few more weeks until the announcement! It's good to be a multiconsole gamer.

grassyknoll3999d ago

Batman was worst on the Wii U.

weekev153998d ago

Dont agree, I played ac on ps3 and wiiu, WiiU version for me was best because WB made really good use of the gamepad. Bundling all the DLC was nice too.

OT its too early to say which versions are going to be best. I'd be surprised to see big differences between XBox/ps4 versions. Clearly WiiU will be downscaled but could end up taking a wee chunk of the pie if devs utilise the gamepad.

For me it'll probably once again come down to who is gonna pay for the exclusive content.

stragomccloud3996d ago

Even though there were performance issues, the game was amazing on Wii U. All of the broadcasts and radio communication went strait to the controller, and the hacking was done using the display. The inventory was easy to work with, and the map being always on made it so I never had to go into a menu and wait. Batman on Wii U was amazing despite the performance issues. So, I am really looking forward to Origins on Wii U since it'll actually be ground up built for the system instead of an unoptimised conversion.

MasterCornholio3999d ago

Well in terms of console games the PS4 version of any multiplatform game will be much better than the same game on the Wii U. But as history has taught us Nintendo consoles are not known to get a ton of multiplatform titles due to poor 3rd party support so if someone wanted a console for 3rd party games the best choice would be either the 720 or the PS4 since they will be the only consoles powerful enough to support next gen game engines.

Karpetburnz3999d ago

That would be nice, but to be honest I diddnt even care that some multiplatform games looked better on Xbox, the differences were so small that you have to put them side by side to notice. you still got the same experience with the game.

ZodTheRipper3999d ago

Only Bethesda games were a pain on the PS3, pther than that I had no problems with any multi platform games.

Lazarus693998d ago

Actually Bayonetta and the Orange Box where bad versions on the PS3.Although that was probably due the the porting not being done by the developers

etowntwo3998d ago

Only Bethesda games..... The guys that made the 3 best rpg this generation that won each game numerous goty awards.

Lol

ziggurcat3998d ago (Edited 3998d ago )

i also find that any game that uses the unreal engine to be a bit of a mess.

@ etowntwo:

you clearly never played fallout or elder scrolls on PS3... good games, but terrible performance issues.

Killjoy30003998d ago (Edited 3998d ago )

I dunno, on some multi-plats, the framerate was significantly worse on the PS3. The uneven visuals I gave a pass, but when its performance took a hit, that's when I'd get upset.

ps3_pwns3998d ago

well xbox 360 owners said they get xbox versions of multiplats since some were slightly better so if they dont get the ps4 multiplats then they are hypocrits. now x360 gamers shifted to saying they like the controller better because thats the on thing that cant be the same because ms pattent. but the ps4 controller is better and has been tested many many times. a controller is not a reason to get on system over another the games are and any controller differences dont mean much as it becomes second nature and unnoticable after you use one or the other for a long time. where were these controller freaks during the ps1 and ps2 gen when they and everyone elses was playing with the dualshocks when the xbox was around. dualshock is the best controller bros stop trying to act like none symetrical analogs is the best set up because you have deformed hands. let me use my strong hand.gif

no matter what xbox fanboys will always spin anything to lie and say ms is the best.

Ruggadagod3999d ago

People bashed PS3 so hard when it came to multiplats and Sony took that to heart. They are really listening to every complaint people have had with PS3(Updates,installs,voice chat,PSN store upgrade, streaming videos, etc)

"Got that one right, Shu!"

Kind of ironic when Sony is focused on GaaS like never before.

Flakegriffin352d ago (Edited 352d ago )

Companies evolve overtime. Sony has implemented themselves in the single player space relatively well. Now they can expand further by doing more all while still giving us single player experiences. Obviously Shu is speaking on GaaS games being the main dominance of the gaming space and if that’s the future then that indeed sucks.

You can have that mindset all while still creating some GaaS titles.

InUrFoxHole352d ago

They have 10 in the works right now.

Crows90352d ago

Absolutely! Man all the freaking gaas games theyve been releasing...wait. Not a single one.

sinspirit352d ago

Did you read? It says "dominated". That word means something.

RedDevils352d ago

They don't want to be Blockbuster, too stubborn to adapt with time.

tagzskie352d ago

kinda ironic when it comes to xbox you xboys can even defeat einstein in explation why its good, when it comes to ps you guys became dumb and dumber..

FinalFantasyFanatic352d ago

How so? They're only after one or two good GaaS games, they're throwing crap at the wall until something sticks, alot of those games in development are going to languish and die shortly after release. They're still predominately focused on their core strategy of great single player games (look at the previous interview where they admit they cancel alot of games).

Bathyj352d ago

God why do Xbox gamers always love the thought of PlayStation being as crappy as Xbox.?

DarXyde351d ago

"Like never before" regarding GaaS is like saying "PS3 is a console that launched with HDD space like never before": it's a very low bar to clear because there isn't much precedent.

I happen to agree with Shu here. I don't think being a GaaS title is a scarlet letter, but I can't think of any live service games that have been great at launch either. Naughty Dog is looking likely break that trend. I'd say two love service titles at a time is the sweet spot. I suspect people can only deal with a limited number of live service games contemporaneously.

TheCaptainKuchiki351d ago (Edited 351d ago )

Lmaooo
People always criticize Sony because 90% of their exclusives are single player games. People say they are too expensive because of low replay value.
And you wanna pretend like Sony is focusing on Gaas? Their biggest games aren't Gaas unlike MICROSOFT.

ModsDoBetter351d ago (Edited 351d ago )

How are Sony focused on GaaS?

They own Bungie and have Destiny but the majority of their titles are far from GaaS.

Why, if you are such a die hard Xbot, do you rush to comment on Sony related articles?

1Victor351d ago

@obscure
Are you ok now we was worried about your mental health state when you disappeared for almost a week from bashing PlayStation articles.
Is the word DENIED still triggering you?

I haven’t read the article as my spam blocker always red flags that site and I don’t t want to risk it so a general comment it is 🤦🏿
We all know live services game and quality rarely goes together but some of them are fun to play

derek351d ago (Edited 351d ago )

@Obscure, Sony is starting from a place of zero which requires a big initial investment to establish themselves in the live services market.

Vengeance1138351d ago

It's very much the opposite, Shu said this damn well knowing Sony is going hard on GaaS. This is Shu confirming that Single player games won't be effected at all despite them going into Live service.

Extermin8or3_351d ago

Except they aren't really- they have what may be a live service game from Haven studios and firewalk studios, they have another from a second party dev and an fps game with multiplayer focus by deviation games, they counted Gt7 as a live service game but really it's not much different to how recent GT titles were treated, they have the last of us factions, a Horizon multiplayer game in production at guerilla alongside horizon 3, a new ip from Bungie. The rest of their studios seem to be hard at work on traditional singleplayer games that may also have a multiplayer mode or may not. So their live service titles are mostly in development from either new teams setup at existing studios or from acquisitions they have made which really just replace the capabilities they once had through Sony Online Entertainment until they sold it half a decade ago. Only I'd argue their new capabilities in this space would appear to be better and have higher quality talent than it did back then.

Thank god for actual gamers in the industry.

neutralgamer1992352d ago

Shu I agree but right now Sony themselves are working on more than 5 live service games

Redemption-64352d ago

He never said they were not working on any. He said, he doesn't want to see Gaming's Future dominated by live-Service Games. Sony currently has 25 games in development. 10 being live service games, with the other mostly likely being single player games and that is honestly a very good balance

neutralgamer1992352d ago

I agree I just hope their live service games are not simple money grabs and try to do some good interesting things

-Foxtrot352d ago

"and that is honestly a very good balance"

The issue is, whether people want to admit it or not because it's Sony, but once a company gets a taste of that money GaaS games make the chances of them going money crazy becomes super higher

I know what you'll probably say

"bu bu but Sony wouldn't do that"

NO COMPANY is immune, even the best can fall and I really don't want to see that happen here.

The fact people will completely blow that off and pretend it's not even a possibility is worrying to me because that's how we end up shits creek.

They might be fine...they might go too far but at the moment I don't think it's a bad thing at all to be sceptical with the shit this industry has gone through in the past 10 years alone.

FinalFantasyFanatic352d ago (Edited 352d ago )

The thing is most of those 10 games won't even be viable, out of the 10 that actually get released, probably only 1 or 2 will make the big bucks worth continuing support. I think Sony even knows that, look at all the other GaaS games that release and die shortly after. Personally I'm okay with that because I don't want the market dominated with these games.

I'd actually rather the resources go on to making some more top-tier JRPGs, I feel like we don't get enough of those in the last couple of gens.

neutralgamer1992351d ago

Final Fantasy

But keep in mind when those games fail many of the studios are shut and there are layoffs

__SteakDeck__352d ago

@-Foxtrot What do you have against live service games. I’m not a fan of live service games, but multiplayer games can be done right just look at Titanfall before EA killed it. As long as PS’s core studios keep making single player games, everything should be fine.

Redemption-64352d ago

Sony said they have 25 games in development. 10 being live service games, with the other mostly likely being single player games. They have more single player games in development

-Foxtrot352d ago

@__SteakDeck__

Urm....that they are a cancer in this industry

That the majority of them fail and the developers have then wasted years on them rather than other things.

They turn developers and publishers into thirsty little money grabbers where that big money is still not enough for them.

I could go on, defending GaaS games is not a hill to die on man, it's really not

"done right just look at Titanfall before EA killed it"

Titanfall 2 was not really a GaaS type of game compared to what we are getting now so that's a really bad example.

__SteakDeck__352d ago

@-Foxtrot Yeah it seems like you just have a hatred for multiplayer games. I’m not the biggest fan of multiplayer games, but like I said they can be done well. Also Titanfall 1 had no single player it was multiplayer only and it’s now a dead game, but it was still good. So yes that is a good example.

FinalFantasyFanatic352d ago

@_SteakDeck_,
I'm still salty about Titanfall 2, it was one of the only multi-player games I actually liked.

NotoriousWhiz351d ago

Multi-player games don't have to be Gaas games. Look at Mario Kart, Splatoon. Nintendo's games most likely don't have Gaas because they're behind the times, but this is one area where it's better to be behind the times.

+ Show (3) more repliesLast reply 351d ago
blackblades352d ago

And? They still have single player games. Domination would completely ruled with live services which Sony should know to still do single player. On a side note they should also do a few 1st party smaller games like indie or AA. By the way is indie a single A game.

Philaroni351d ago (Edited 351d ago )

To be fair, so has many other companies aka Ubisoft for example and many of them they decided to end development on. Just because something is in the works does not mean it will release if they do not feel it will pan out. ATM all of the GaaS we know of from Sony are The Last of Us Factions, and some kind of Horizon (Monster Hunter like) game. Also keep in mind, they do own Bungie, and Destiny and there new project be it Destiny 3 and there new IP will likely be that. So just that on its own is near half of what we can best assume.

Main issue with GaaS now days is that its very over saturated. Keep in mind as well Battel Royal games are GaaS by nature also, hell CoD is GaaS. Halo Infinity, ditto. Really now days unless something is an honest to god single player game only the GaaS term gets over used.

Not sure if many played it (I loved it) Gun's Up was a GaaS for a long while, it was going to shut down till some youtubers gave it a bit of new life for another half of year. We know Sony Mobile is working on things and it not shock me if some of this stuff is targeted to the mobile market.

Right now Sony's biggest weakness I'd say is MP games. With that Firewalk studio from lots of vets they just acquired its quite likely there game will have GaaS stuff as part of it, that is still years down the line. I think everyone needs to chill out some and just wait and see what comes. We have not really got a real honest GaaS from Sony before this or even last gen really... At least as we know them now days. Such a broad term now.
