Ever go to a gaming site and just know a game is going to get a bad review score without even needing to read the review? How about for an entire genre of games across a whole spectrum of websites? PSU delves into the sociology of why the majority of western reviewers have a hate-on for PS3 RPGs from the Far East.
VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "Upon finally finishing Devil May Cry 5 recently - after it spent several years on my “I’ll play that soon” list - I considered giving it a fittingly-named Late Look article. However, considering that this was indeed the final piece I was missing in the DMC puzzle, I decided to instead take this opportunity to take a look back at the entirety of this genre-defining series and rank the entries. What also made this a particularly tempting notion was that while most high-profile series have developed fairly evenly over time, with a few bumps on the road, the history of Devil May Cry has, at least in my eyes, been an absolute roller coaster, with everything from total disasters to action game gold."
3,1,4,5 to me, never played 2. 5 gameplay is amazing but level design was really disappointing to me, just a bunch of plain arenas, the story felt like a worse written rehash of the 3rd and the charater models looked weird ( specially the ladies ). Another problem with 5 was that there was not enough content for 3 charaters so I could never really familiarize with any of them

Golden Axe is a great game I enjoyed it on the SMS, Genesis and in the arcade. Great game but it truly was a quarter eater back in the day. I wish Sega could get the rights to the arcade port of Moonwalker another great arcade game I enjoyed. Collect so many monkeys and become Robo Michael lol.
GB: "With this feature, we will be taking a look at 15 of the best games from the PlayStation 2's vast library."
it's not just the reviewers
Yes, and no. I think reviewers always give safe review scores to big-name games. But niche games - whether Japanese or Western - tend to get far more mixed reviews. For instance, Resonance of Fate got mediocre reviews (74 Meta) even though the combat and freedom of exploration was far superior to FF13 (84 Meta score). But guess which one had the big name and the well-known dev?

Just look at all that hate.
Yup i knew it all along
There is no cynicism or conspiracy, as Nintendo games always get amazing reviews. I think it comes down to the cultural aspects, as mentioned in the article.
I love JRPG's, and wished Western Reviewers could sit through them as easy as they could a 5 hour linear CoD campaign. But sadly, that isn't the case. Lets just leave it at cultural differences, that is all.
You can generally add a "1" to a JRPG's aggregate score over here. So, if a JRPG gets an 8, it is more so a 9 for those who love them.
