The Evil Within Director Plans On Bringing The Horror Back To Survival Horror

According to Mikami, the survival horror aspect wasn’t even part of the original plan for The Evil Within.

good I have missed it even dead space as turned to much into action.

I miss the days of fatal frame and that feeling of helplessness

Mikami is late to hype his own sail boat. Frictional Games beat him to it long ago and succeeded. You can't go anywhere 'Survival-Horror' without someone mentioning Amnesia: The Dark Descent.

adorie4002d ago (Edited 4002d ago )

The same can be said of Resident Evil for PS1. We can go further, to when the genre was arguably conceived.

Amnesia: The Dark Descent is what I'd call the next step in the genre, though. a Modern Day RE game that relies on it's own unique way to experience Survivor Horror.

Not being able to fight back, having to manage sanity and having light and sound play a role in actual game play decisions is what makes Amnesia stand out today.

I want to see The Evil Within do something similar, but Mikami already said the characters in this game will be tough and won't be the type not to fight back. So the feeling of helplessness might not be apart of this seemingly grand new entry into the genre.

When was it ever present?
I've played them all and they range from action to laughable in degrees.

What he should be stating is that he intends to create the world first truly horror game.

When that happens it will be groundbreaking.
So far doesn't exits. Marketing term tried to be made real. Hard thing to live up to.

crazysammy4002d ago

May I ask what games you played that were marketed as horror and you felt were not? I know the tag gets thrown around a lot but I think there are some genuine horror games out there.

MilkMan4002d ago

I don't have a lot of bubbles and I am not trollin' Simply stating my opinion.
But I've played them all.

From Amnesia, to Resident Evil and from Dead Space to Lone Survivor.
Setting mood? Perhaps. I think Amnesia and Silent Hill do this best.
But Terror or horror? I have never experienced.
and I don't mean jump scenes, like something you would see in Paranormal Activity. I mean true, wet your bed terror. Tue kind of thing that generates nightmares...?

ive never experienced that in a game. Dead Space did a good job with the audio in their games...

But I think if anyone can create that kind of chill in your bones, that would be something that would be groundbreaking.

I just think that the moment you are given a weapon or have the ability to fight back, it some what mutes the concept of fear.

But this is one persons opinion.

crazysammy4002d ago

@Milkman I don't think you are trolling and I certainly didn't try to call you out or anything. I was more curious if maybe the ones you had played were some of the ones that were falsely labeled. You sound like you have played a lot and have experience with the "genre".

About your last comment I think that games are different than movies, so you can't just have "pants pissing" horror, it needs to be fun too. Thats the ultimate challenge I suppose.

Kyosuke_Sanada4002d ago (Edited 4002d ago )

I say yes and no because their are games like the Thing for PS2 that gives you a fairly large amount of ammunition (seeing that it is a military installation you are playing in) but it doesn't really make a difference at all in battle if bullets are only the first step in killing a single enemy.

Guns can be used as a false security blanket if the enemy design is clever enough to implement a rather difficult but logical way to defeat them.

crazysammy4002d ago

I hope he means Japanese horror, which is more about feeling and atmosphere and not American horror which is akin to a haunted house. I call it "BOO" scary.

I love games like Fatal Frame and Silent Hill for that. Genuine fear not surprise.

ThisJarContainsTHC4001d ago

It's Shinji Mikami; I don't think we'll be getting anything but the best in Japanese Video Game Horror.

I am waiting in anticipation.

Original FEAR is a goddamn masterpiece

ModsDoBetter345d ago

Was playing Alien: Isolation again a few weeks ago, still holds up and the AI is incredible.

F.E.A.R. was another amazing game, shame the series went downhill with 2 and then fell off entirely with F3AR.

Couldn’t get into Fatal Frame, bought the remaster on PS5 and just…couldn’t.

DeathTouch345d ago

Fatal Frame 2 is an underrated masterpiece.
