...Well, you can.

But you shouldn't.

You have to consider things... ALL things... in context. While this means you can't ignore the historical context in favor of the contemporary context, it ALSO means you cannot ignore the contemporary context.

This is why you still see people publishing literary analyses of the Canterbury Tales, most of which do not even attempt to frame the stories in a strictly historical context.

With regard to games:

Some games age well.
Some do not.

Get over it. Just because you like a game... does not mean the game has to be "good" by modern standards. Case in point: Planescape Torment is considered by many to be the best RPG ever made... yet its combat was mediocre by the standards of its era... and is utterly irredeemable by contemporary standards.

But do you see PST fans get their underpants all jimmied up inside their intestinal tracts when people criticize PST's combat? Nope.
