'Beyond: Two Souls' video looks amazing but where is the gameplay?

XMNR: David Cage and Quantic Dreams took Beyond: Two Souls to the Tribeca Film Festival this weekend and released a trailer and 35-minute video of the Playstation 3 game on Sunday. The footage itself looks fantastic and is a showcase for how far the current generation of consoles has come in graphics, animation and performance capture. However, there's a distinct lack of gameplay and what is there appears to only be quicktime events (QTEs).

You could say the same thing about Journey (minus QTEs), which ended up being one of the best games of 2012. If you don't understand it, thats your problem. Also, I'm fairly sure the combat isn't QTEs, it more dynamic using the joystick to trigger different reactions during the bullet time effect.

Queasy4008d ago

Journey had far more player interactions than what has been shown for Beyond: Two Souls.

MariaHelFutura4008d ago

Aside from being co-op, not really. Journey, was great but it was more about "THE JOURNEY" than having player interactions.

Campy da Camper4008d ago (Edited 4008d ago )

I'm not worried. I like the slow pace stuff every once in a while. As with heavy rain, I enjoyed it a lot but I wouldnt want all my games like that. Its like fine wine, sure it nice to sip on summer nights but the day to day I need beer.

HammadTheBeast4008d ago

They haven't shown much of the actual gameplay, because the videos were shown at the Tribeca Film Festival, which focuses on story, characters, and emotion.

Vames4007d ago

I've submitted a similar article about the lack of gameplay and was hammered for it. At one point someone commented about the supernatural things in the game, as if that improves the gameplay. An interactive movie is all Beyond: Two Souls is, you can even call it a casual game that looks core. Sit around and casually tap X, but make sure to have good timing and memory of where the buttons are or your dead.

This is what they call gaming ladies and gentlemen.

All I can say is that I watched that 35 minutes and I was pissed when it ended because I wanted to see more. I think I would be satisfied just watching. But, the gameplay seemed to be similar in using Aiden to get out of situations. I love the kicking ass part too. So, it will ne similar to heavy rain with a better story, better acting and better characters. I am down. I wanna see how she gets out of being beaten in the head with a bat.

OrbitalBT4008d ago

this is the problem with what I have with David Cage's idea of a game; it can be so easily viewed on Youtube. but the problem is it wouldn't be no different if you shared the experience with 7 other guys to see this game. i mean there's no co-op.

It's all good scripting but i see the problems with doing this sort of thing. graphics look good on a focal point of view, everything looks average when your eyes gaze outside of the boundaries.

ssj274008d ago (Edited 4008d ago )

True .. the fighting scene is all gameplay.. no GtE's.
the part where you control the objects with the soul's power is all gameplay to, no GTE's .
I don't understand the hate.. plus I be you can also walk from point a to point b to finish the levels, just lile any other game.
This game is a cinematic experience with always fresh and unique gameplay.. and i love it.

Try finishing the game by just watching it, that's right you can't and you need to play the game to finish it.
Is a game, not a shooter, not a plataformer, not etc but a unique experience.

NukaCola4008d ago

Its a piece of visual media where you press buttons and interact with the screen to progress the story. With a "real" game you press buttons and interact with the screen in order to progress the story. So its in fact a game I guess. Weird how that works. :/

stu8884008d ago

The fighting wasn't quick time events? Flip me those animations were good!

sway_z4008d ago (Edited 4008d ago )

I agree 100% with MariaHelFutura!

Don't you dare try and troll Beyond - Two Souls. It is more than a game, it is a unique experience. The industry didn't have the 'Balls' to invest in these types of games...but Sony had the faith and Heavy Rain paid off!

Where is the gameplay??

Is the article's writer smoking on a glass pipe?? Heavy Rain was different, but very playable..so much so, I completed the darn thing 5 times :)

Beyond - Two Souls is as good for the Gaming Industry as it is for the PS Brand itself. At last, games that treat players like adults, and not gun tooting teens!!

GTF >Out!

Salooh4008d ago (Edited 4008d ago )

I'm proud of you guys T_T .

Seriously, you don't like it don't buy it. I don't like cars but i can't really bash GT5 because it's a great game and i can't argue with that just because i don't like it.

_-EDMIX-_4008d ago

agreed at this point if somebody ask a question what the gameplay is in this game, they may need to sit back and contemplate being actual game journalist.

I mean it's a cute troll but heavy rains success says otherwise
games like this will inevitably push the medium.

ATi_Elite4008d ago

$60 Movie coming up!

I wish I could remember the person who who bragged about cut scenes in video games.

well my friend you can pay $60 to watch a movie on your system very soon while I actually PLAY my games and not just press X or watch them.

QD games always played more like movies with player event prompts

StrongMan4008d ago

No one asked that about The Walking Dead.

Queasy4008d ago (Edited 4008d ago )

Actually, they did. The thing is, The Walking Dead kept the player actively involved whether it was with QTEs, shooting zombies, walking around and talking, solving puzzles, etc. It struck a good balance.

The balance between interacting and watching is way too skewed towards watching with what has been shown for Beyond: Two Souls.

MariaHelFutura4008d ago

Everything you said happened in the 30 min. video. Aside from shooting, She fought, solved problems, walked and talked.

Queasy4008d ago

@MariaHelFutura: In a 35 minute video, approximately only 7 minutes of it involved player interaction. Approximately 28 minutes of it was watching. That's what I mean when I say the balance is way too skewed towards watching.

MariaHelFutura4008d ago (Edited 4008d ago )

^^^^

I could show you portions of Metal Gear Solid where there is 7 mins of gameplay and 53 mins of actual (basically non interactive) cutscenes. It doesn't stop MGS from being on of the best and longest active franchises in the gaming industry.

Queasy4008d ago

@MariaHelFutura: And this why I didn't like MGS4 either.

MariaHelFutura4008d ago

Great.... I could care less if you enjoyed MGS4 or not. That doesn't stop it from being a greatly produced quality game for a gaming system or Beyond: Two Souls or Journey.

Also, did you write this or just submit this?

sway_z4008d ago

Don't buy, play or even whisper the names of these QTE/Cutscene/Non-interactive games if you don't like them...

S*I*M*P*L*E*S !!

_-EDMIX-_4008d ago (Edited 4008d ago )

I could not agree anymore with you guys games like journey in the walking dead carried most of last year's Game of the Year awards. the thing most of these gamers don't understand is that this is a type of game play style. ever heard of mist? Ever heard of Monkey Island?

so because you're ignorant enough that you've never heard of these genres there somehow not games?

thing I don't understand is why attack a game for being unique within its genre? there is more than enough call of duty and Halo to go around buddy. games like Metal Gear Solid sole purpose is to not go on a killing fest. games are much more than getting high points we're a little bit past that phase buddy. Too many GOTY awards prove you wrong

dafegamer4008d ago

the walking dead is just like Beyond in gameplay so whats your point. Beyond keeps the player involved as well. You're either Trolling, or havent seen the 30 min gameplay

poopsack4008d ago

"Approximately 28 minutes of it was watching. That's what I mean when I say the balance is way too skewed towards watching."

But, you're not saying anything. You're just repeating yourself. A real argument presents examples to prove a point, and to debate counterarguments. There was plenty of gameplay in the half hour, the entity scenes, possessing, fighting, getting through the debris. Its all playable. Just cause its presented in a heavily cinematic format is no merit for moaning. An equal amount of scenes in TWD might give you the exact same amount of playability, but you seem to believe that it having a more traditional format makes it more of a game. Its ok, I hate new things too.

francknara64008d ago

Right. Cause it was multiplatform.

dafegamer4008d ago (Edited 4008d ago )

Yup that the reason. This article wants to shit on another Playstation exclusive game. Nobody complained about the Walking dead, cause it was on xbox 360 as well. Sigh I hat sensationalism

ShugaCane4008d ago

The author is clearly not familiar with Cage's games nor with the notion of immersion. Take Journey for example. You spend a lot of time simply walking and exploring, without any interactions, and yet it's thrilling and exciting and fascinating all at the same time. That 35 minute video was just astonishing, not only because of the graphics, but because of the way it makes you care about characters in such a small amout of time. It's incredible and I can't wait to "play" it myself.

Queasy4008d ago

Walking and exploring in Journey is a player interaction. And yes, I am familiar with David Cage and Heavy Rain and Indigo Prophecy. However saying, "But it's David Cage!" is not a good excuse for sidelining the player as a viewer the vast majority of the time.

supraking9514008d ago

lol your ignorant. David Cage makes something different and everyone gives him a hard time. Yet everyone judges other games being the same over and over. 360 fanboys must bored since all there exclusives are non existent and there successor system sounds like a flop

Roccetarius4008d ago (Edited 4008d ago )

David Cage likes to mention emotions and characters a lot, but i just can't take that seriously from him. There are certainly other games, like Bioshock Infinite that does a better job of making you care.

Just like Queasy mentioned, the balance between gameplay and being sidelined is off. Other similar games have done a much better job.

Maybe he should've stayed in the movie business.

Sniperwithacause4008d ago

Well since you are now all out of bubbles trying to defend that beyond didn't have enough interaction gameplay, how did that work out for ya? I on my phone, so in won't rant how wrong I think you are for long. Everything I have seen in the Tribeca showing, and the actors discussion about the game insures me that there is plenty of player involvement. Matter of fact I don't really care to prove you wrong. I'll just say this. If you want more to do while playing the game , how about you choke your chicken? How about you pick your nose? Or you could even shove something up your butt! If you don't like the gameplay then don't play the game. Stop complaining about something that is so much larger than you.

Hicken4008d ago

Seriously, if you don't like the gameplay, DON'T PLAY IT.

It only makes you look like one of the masses when you complain because the game is different.

It's almost like you're specifically trolling this game.

You should stop.

Quantic Dream Announces Detroit: Become Human, Beyond: Two Souls, & Heavy Rain for Steam

Quantic Dream revealed the upcoming Steam Release of its games Detroit: Become Human, Beyond: Two Souls, and Heavy Rain coming "soon."

Sony is expanding their PC approach beyond (no pun intended) Epic Store realm.

Steam official pages:

Heavy Rain
https://store.steampowered....

Beyond: Two Souls
https://store.steampowered....

Detroit: Become Human
https://store.steampowered....

Abriael1425d ago (Edited 1425d ago )

Quantic Dream is self-publishing and doing this entirely independently from Sony. Sony is not involved at all.

Sciurus_vulgaris1425d ago

Detroit: Become Human and Beyond: Two Souls are owned by Sony. Therefore,Quantic Dream needs Sony's permission to release the titles on steam and PC.

https://trademarks.justia.c...
https://trademarks.justia.c...

Abriael1425d ago (Edited 1425d ago )

@Sciurus_vulgaris: neither is owned by Sony. Registering a trademark (trademarks are related only to titles and have nothing to do with game or IP ownership) is completely unrelated from owning the rights of a game.

Sony had the publishing license on the games as a second party for a period. That license has expired, so now Quantic Dream is free to do whatever they want with them, and they are.

Incidentally, they have announced a few months ago that now they're taking the independent route, so expect their games on all platforms from now on.

hulk_bash19871425d ago

A trademark is a way a company or individual exercises legal ownership of an intellectual property. And as of right now Sony does still own the trademarks for those two QD developed games.

https://breakinggames.com/p...

Abriael1425d ago (Edited 1425d ago )

@hulk_bash1987 "Breaking Games" isn't trademark law. That's a massive oversimplification of trademark law. Trademarks do not in any shape or form give you ownership on an IP. It gives you ownership of a name. period.

Since trademarks are completely separate by publishing contracts, Sony's publishing contract on a game can have expired (and it has, the publisher of the games on PC is Quantic Dream itself) but the trademark still not have expired.

Quantic Dream has full ownership of the IPs. In fact, you won't see Sony named absolutely anywhere in any listing for PC. If Sony was involved, you'd see them listed right there.

Imalwaysright1425d ago

hulk_bash1987

The intellectual property being the title of the game. Trademarks only protect names or logos. The game itself and everything in it: code, story, characters, art, etc are protected by copyrights.

hulk_bash19871425d ago

Sony does own the trademarks and therefore have ownership over some portion of the ip. So they wouldve had to agree or had some type of legal or mutual agreement in place for QD to release them on platforms outside of Playstation.

Abriael1425d ago (Edited 1425d ago )

@hulk_bash1987: Sony's influence on the title is determined exclusively by their publishing contract. That's all the legal agreement you need.

If the trademark had any value over this, you'd see trademark notices and Sony plastered all over the listings.

Bottomline, this has literally nothing to do with Sony's approach related to PC gaming as Obscure_Observer tried to imply.

hulk_bash19871425d ago

Regardless of the ownership debate. Sony has been more liberal with their exclusives recently. QDs games, Death Stranding and most importantly HZD.

Abriael1425d ago

Horizon Zero Dawn is likely an experiment done because Kojima Productions optimized the engine at basically no additional cost for Sony.

The release on PC of Death Stranding was likely a condition from Kojima himself since the beginning. This has nothing to do with Sony.

hulk_bash19871425d ago

Horizon is definetly and experiement. Its Sony testing the water, to see how big of an audience their games might have on PC. It was pretty much out right stated that they want to get their games out to as many people as possible. Which will potentially open people up to buying PS hardware.

ZwVw1425d ago

Bro, you're getting licencing and copyright confused. Beyond and Detroit are both Sony properties, who Sony is granting licensing permission for QT to publish on PC. This is nothing new. Companies like MS, Square and Sega do this all the time.

Besides, is you visit Detroit's Steam page, you can clearly see the Sony copyright at the bottom of the page. https://store.steampowered....

Obscure_Observer1425d ago

"Quantic Dream is self-publishing and doing this entirely independently from Sony. Sony is not involved at all."

The only reason those games are available on PC, is because Sony gave Quantic Dream a permission. If you think Sony paid those third party studios millions to develop a game so they can claim "independence" and do whatever they want with said games, you´re seriously mistaken.

Persian_Immortal1425d ago

According to the United States Copyright Office https://cocatalog.loc.gov/c...

Sony owns the Copyrights for Detroit Become Human and Beyond Two Souls and Death Stranding.

RosweeSon1424d ago

Even if they were 2 of those games were last gen who cares it’s a bit different if they are your only good games to talk about and releasing simultaneously these games are 5-10 years old came out of ps3 originally except Detroit. Like horizon it was a great game do I care it’s gone to PC also not at all I’d already and finished it over a year previously 🤷🏻‍♂️🤓 😜✌🏻

neutralgamer19921424d ago

Abriael

sony is notorious for wanting IP's. Insomniac pitched sunset overdrive to sony but went with ms because they were going to let insomniac keep the IP. I think sony is allowing this because it's towards the end of gen and these games will generate extra resources. Sony allowed it on epic first because they have a great relationship lately eith epic and now even if QD are self publishing they would have spoken to sony about it

you are making it sound like just because they are self publishing they don't have to ask sony. The company that owns the IP's has a lot of say

https://www.gamespot.com/ar...

BTW i am not saying other games from sony will come to PC just that they do own the IP's

TricksterArrow1424d ago

Hmm... You can literally see this in their steam page:

neutralgamer19921424d ago

shloobian

there is no goal post if yo are comparing MS releasing all their exclusives on pc day one to sony releasing HZD(3 years after release on pc) than maybe you should look up those said goal posts. Most likely case with HZD is the fact kojima optimized the game engine for PC so sony/GG didn't have any extra cost to make it work on pc

hulk_bash19871425d ago (Edited 1425d ago )

Interested to see what other Sony IPs will see a release on PC

S2Killinit1424d ago

If this makes Obscure happy, then does that mean he is secretly sad that ALL of xbox’s games are available on PC? Hmm

Obscure_Observer1424d ago

@S2Killinit

"If this makes Obscure happy, then does that mean he is secretly sad that ALL of xbox’s games are available on PC? Hmm"

Sad? Lol.

Xbox games on PC means more money to fund new first party studios, games and new IP´s for us, Xbox console gamers.

Sony is not stupid, they´re paying attention to every move competition makes. They will allow day one exclusives on PC? Unlikely. However, you´ll see more and more Playstation games making their way to PC. Then, will see more and more PS fanboys telling how Sony is making money out of the PC gamers to fund new first party studios, games and new IP´s for us, Playstation console gamers.

You heard from me first. Mark my words. ;)

S2Killinit1424d ago (Edited 1424d ago )

Not much of a prediction though is it? The issue is that xbox is already moving toward obsoletion of consoles because MS has realized that they cant dominate the console market, so they want to scorch earth the console habitat by making it irrelevant (or at least a less important factor). As a console gamer I will support consoles and console makers that resist these types of maneuvers. I say screw Microsoft.

itsmebryan1424d ago

Can someone explain why MS console exclusives on PC are bad, but, when Sony copies the same thing it's somehow "different" or "Okay"?

I need to understand fanboy logic.

The Top Five: Women in Games

BY GRANT TAYLOR: If there’s one thing I appreciate in gaming, it’s a strong female character. In recent years, we’ve seen countless women in games, ranging from fierce warriors to masters of the supernatural. These days, if a game doesn’t have a female lead, you at least have the choice to select one.

I’ve played so many games with brilliant female protagonists in the last decade. It was honestly difficult getting this list down to just five!

So, which of these characters rank the highest?
